Stage 5

img5.imageshack.us/img5/3592/langkawi5profilegk9.jpg

This is getting repetetive. A flat stage perfect for my sprinters. The big difference to the first four days is the yellow jersey. The peleton will expect me to pull back any breaks, something i havent helped with at all untill now. This will reduce my chances of a huge lead-out again, as my four support riders will have to use alot of energy. A break did go, and as expected i was left with most of the work.

img26.imageshack.us/img26/525/langkawi5peletoncb2.jpg

The break was caught with 15 km to go, and i quickly tried to organize a lead-out. With 4 km to go it was still a close race, but i'd manage to get my two sprinters up front. They both had sat back in the pack the entire day and saved energy.

img27.imageshack.us/img27/800/langkawi5leadoutnt0.jpg

With 3 km to, Jochen exploded away with Stefan on his wheel. He kept it going untill there was only 1200 meters left and Stefan pulled past him. Pollack was coming up fast from behind but they both held out for a superb 1-2!

Stage 6

img18.imageshack.us/img18/2467/langkawi6profileem8.jpg

A flat stage yet again, but with a small bump early on. Today would again test my support riders as they would have to bring back any breaks. 6 riders took off and decided to split into 3 groups.

img26.imageshack.us/img26/8921/langkawi6breakfs8.jpg

They worked up a decent lead of about 9 minutes and it looked like i would have to do all the work alone. Fortunatly Volksbank decided to help out their Austrian brothers and did some relays as well.

img19.imageshack.us/img19/6403/langkawi6peletonjp4.jpg

With 30 km to go my support riders were looking knackered and with the break swallowed the other teams set a furious pace. This kept going all the way to the line and i barely manage to move my sprinters to the front. Daniel Schorn did an amazing job pulling them forward, and was totally blown after it.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/5195/langkawi6leadoutjl0.jpg

Unfortunatly there wasnt enough juice left in the sprinters legs and we ended up outside the podium for once.

A slightly hilly one-day race. My main goal is to finish within the Top 10, which will be difficult with several Pro Tour teams showing up. I'll be sending some riders with the break that is bound to come but i dont expect it to last. Rabobank, Lampre, Silence - Lotto and Liquigas all had strong riders taking part.

img6.imageshack.us/img6/8877/gpetruschiprofilehs4.jpg

According to plan both Dillier and Valach attacked near the end of the climb. A break of 9 riders was soon established.

img26.imageshack.us/img26/3166/gpetruschiattackdq5.jpg

My two riders sat back and didnt contribute alot, and soon the pack woke up with Rabobank leading the peleton. As the gap closed to 2 minutes, several riders attacked to bridge over. After the dust settled Valach and Albasino were left up front.

img25.imageshack.us/img25/9764/gpetruschicounterattackrt2.jpg

They were swallowed and spat out by the pack shortly after and we started organizing a sprint. Stefan Schäfer lead out Peter and Harald untill the 5 km mark. Peter took over and held out for Harald to start sprinting with 2500 meters to go. Non of the big sprinters were upfront, but Priamo and Löwik were closing fast. With a last surge of energy he held out to the line!

img23.imageshack.us/img23/9020/gpetruschiendyq7.jpg

A great result that really suprised me. Oscar Freire was nowhere to be seen in the sprint, neither was any of the other favorites.

Stage 7 - Now on hard, for your viewing/reading pleasure!

Ok, i've ramped it up a notch. I'll be playing on hard from now on. And now... on with the show!

img27.imageshack.us/img27/6569/langkawi7profilelo1.jpg

Today's stage is gonna be a difficult one. The bumps in the road might seem minor, but with a reduced team of only 6 riders, and a few of them feeling the strain of a week of racing, it's gonna be a big impact. I expect the peleton to be chasing any breaks hard when we hit the steepest bumps. My plan is to try and keep any breaks at a reasonable distance, untill the bigger teams step up and do the work. With tomorrows mountain stage i know my chances in the GC are slim to none. Wasting energy on chasing a break isnt gonna help me.

As expected a break went fairly early. After an initial 4, another 3 went to link up. The wind had picked up again and i was already dreading the impact this would have on my support riders.

img22.imageshack.us/img22/8256/langkawi7breakyh3.jpg

I set my riders to relay at a moderate intensity to minimize the time lost. The strong wind did drain them quite quick and soon Volksbank and Acqua e Sapone took over.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/1092/langkawi7chasemq7.jpg

The peleton was on the verge of breaking up as the pace up front was furious. My support cast was dropped one by one and i think the weakness of my squad for this race is really starting to show. Jochen and Stefan managed to hold on, but both were feeling tired today and the explosive lead-outs and sprints we're used to just wasnt there. Our least favorite italian rushed ahead to another victory.

Stage 8 - The decider

img7.imageshack.us/img7/5946/langkawi8profilekq5.jpg

It's finally here. The day i've been dreading. I agree it's no L'Alpe d'Huez, but with my sprinters mountain and hill skills in the mid and upper 50s it might as well be. The plan for today is to sit in the peleton as long as i can, and hope i dont loose too much time up the climb. As expected the regular optimists were off early.

img27.imageshack.us/img27/6340/langkawi8breakox1.jpg

Then nothing much happened for a long time. I had no intentions of going after the break, and it seemed noone else had either. As the distance grew the favorites started looking at each other waiting for someone to do something.... and still nothing happened. With 37 km to go, and the break leading with over 14 minutes they finally started attacking.

img24.imageshack.us/img24/8416/langkawi8counternv7.jpg

Up ahead the break were having the time of their life, slowly grinding away at the "not so steep" hill. Donato Cannone from NGC Médical was looking strong.

img25.imageshack.us/img25/6271/langkawi8climbdm3.jpg

As several favorites tried to attack up the hill, the pack did wake up slightly, but it was never gonna catch the break. Cannone will probably remember this day for a while.

img19.imageshack.us/img19/7435/langkawi8endsh9.jpg

We were pleased as well. With the pack keeping a slow pace most of the day, all our riders finished with the peleton, and the main contenders didnt gain alot. Both Jochen and Stefan remain in the Top 10 in the GC, a result im very pleased with. It's worth noting that there's no more mountain points left, and how they decided who get's that jersey is beyond me. Wink

None of my riders have any recovery worth mentioning and they are starting to feel the strain.

Well in real life it would go to who took the most 1st places then 2nd places etc. Not sure how they work it out on the game. i'm guessing it would be the same.

If that was the case then Cannone should be #1 and not #4 as he's the only one with a stage win out of the 4. Beats me Wink

no i mean the most 1st places over the mountain sprint points. if you got your 20 points by winning a couple of sprints but someone else did it by finishing 3rd all the time then you would win.

Giro di Reggio Calabria

It's off to italy for a three day stage race. I'm still only using be B-squad riders so my expectations aren't high.

Leader H.Starzengruber
Sprinter P. Pichler

Free Riders
J. Valach
S. Schäfer

Support riders
S. Dillier
R. Lauscha
B. Thurau
W. Murer

Starzengruber has the best hill skill of the lot and with a good sprint is going for Top 10 finishes on stages, and hopefully a Top 10 GC spot. Jan Valach is again going on the attack and his main target will be mountain sprints. Most are early in the stages and should be fought over by potential breaks. Pichler will be the main lead-out for Starzengruber and Schäfer will be allowed to go in a break on stage 2 or 3.

Stage 1

img16.imageshack.us/img16/9378/giroreggio1profilepv6.jpg

Starts hilly, but ends in a long flat stretch. Starzengruber will sit in the pack and try his luck in the sprint, while Valach will go with the break to get the climbers jersey.

img15.imageshack.us/img15/5115/giroreggio1breakok4.jpg

A break forms after the first climb with 10 riders. Valach has no trouble getting into it and they soon start working together. As they approach the only classified climb of the day, Jan puts in a good effort in pulling the break up. The break thanks him by letting him take the jersey unchallanged.

img14.imageshack.us/img14/1159/giroreggio1climblf5.jpg

As the break hit the flat stretch they held a good lead of 7'30". At one point it did seem like they were going to make it all the way and with 15 km to go they were ahead by 1 minute. But the peleton closed fast and we tried to get our sprint set up. Peter wasnt feeling too good and was hardly able to move Harald up front. He started early and probably blew too much energy.

img13.imageshack.us/img13/6404/giroreggio1endhh2.jpg

Still a Top 10 finish was as much as i could expect as Starzengruber isnt a proper sprinter, and more of a lead-out man. We also secured the climbers jersey which was excellent. Jan was delighted with his first bit of success this season after a difficult start.

Stage 9

img24.imageshack.us/img24/1286/langkawi9profilecx8.jpg

A flat criterium around the malaysian capitol. Our goal is to have a the peleton together for a mass-sprint and try to get Stefan or Jochen some bonus time and points. Points would secure the green jersey, and any bonus time would see them climb the GC.
The break went early and consisted of 3 riders, all well behind in the GC.

img22.imageshack.us/img22/871/langkawi9breakmw0.jpg

The pack let them get a good lead, and with 50km to go, and a 4'30" lead i decided to start working for it. Again my tired support crew was called upon to relay up front.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/5194/langkawi9chasedo7.jpg

Rucker and Brändle were feeling superb today, so with a sprint coming up, i took them off the relay. Schärer and Schorn worked really hard and with 25 km to go the other teams decided to help out. Schärer and Schorn were soon dropped and rolled in at their own pace.
The peleton swallowed the break soon after. Rucker and Brändle put in some amazing work and delivered Jochen and Stefan up front with 4 km to go.

img17.imageshack.us/img17/5681/langkawi9leadoutut7.jpg

Jochen took over and pushed hard. At the 3km mark he exploded away, with Stefan right behind. Our least favorite italian was unable to grab Stefan's wheel Grin When Stefan took over and Jochen dropped back we were 10 meters ahead with 700 meters to go. There could be only one result!

img23.imageshack.us/img23/2905/langkawi9700togoep9.jpg

img18.imageshack.us/img18/1664/langkawi9endks1.jpg

An amazing result! Stefan secured the green jersey for us, and jumped to 3rd in the GC. Our support riders do deserve most of the credit as they fought for every race and delivered our sprinters to excellent posistions almost every time.
