It was the queen stage of this year's Paris-Nice. The riders should climb the legendary Mont Ventoux, where Armstrong always was beaten, where Simpson died. It was a legend of a mountain.
The break of the day contained some heavy names, two of the main favourites where there, Sastre from CSC and Anton from Euskaltel.
When the riders hit the Mont Ventoux, Konovalovas abandoned the race, he was hurted from the crash on yesterday's stage. Hopefully it wasn't something serious, and I hope he can continue his preparations for the Ardennes.
The attacks started at the very bottom of Ventoux, Moncoutie seemed very keen on making a good result.
He was folllowed by Rodriguez (GCE), Garate (QSI and the Ag2r duo Moreau and Nocentini.
They were allowed a very good gap before Liquigas started their real chase, they held nearly 2 minutes. Valverde was afraid of his yellow jersey as both Nocentini and Moreau was under a minute behind.
With 5 kilometres to the summit, the Ag2r duo and Moncoutie had to let Rodriguez and Garate go. Nibali didn't attack in the peloton but he pedalled so hard that Valverde stood no chance of attacking. The peloton couldn't bridge the gap to the front of 5 and Rodriguez and Garate could battle for the stage. win.
Rodriguez was could as ice and waited until 400 metres to make his move, but he came around Garate and took a brilliant victory.
Valverde made a little attacke right before the sprint, and he sprinted so fast that he made a gap to the rest of the peloton, it was at least 20 seconds.
(Valverde in the upper left, the peloton is behind.)
But the timekeepers said there were no timegaps and Valverde was furious, but we couldn't complain as he was very lucky at the stage before.

The stage offered some decent hill from the start to the middle of the stage, but it was a long, flat run-in to the finishline.
Kolesnikov from Unibet started the attacks of the day, and he also managed to get in the break of the day.
Colom from FDJ started the attacks when there were 60 kilometres to the line, but no one had faith in his try and he was alone.
With 25 kilometres left of the stage it was all together and the bunch were heading for a mass sprint. Valverde again tried an attack with 4 kilometres to go, the pace wasn't very high, and the sprinters were back in the pack, when the sprint started he had a little gap.
But he couldn't hold on and Paolini and Ivanov came from a long way behind and took first and second.
But thanks to the 2 bonus seconds he got, he is now second overall.

A very though stage was on the program, it ended with 5 kilometres right up in the sky. A perfect stage for Valverde if he was in good enough form.
The daily break was as usually up front. Surprisingly, Sastre was again in the break, his manager can't be happy with him.
When we reached the penultimate climb, Nibali attacked. He was followed by Rodriguez. It was a really dangerous attack, but Valverde chose to not follow as both QuiskStep and Discovery had a lot of teammates left.
It was a smart choice, with 15 kilometres to the finish it was all together again. The pack hit the climb with 5 kilometres to go. Valverde was feeling amazing, a daily form of +5. This was his stage! Joly attacked at the bottom, he got a gap of around 10-20 seconds. Valverde was just sitting there, eating, and pacing all he could.
He was afraid of attacking to early, if he got much lactic acid in his legs on this stage, then he was dead....But with 2.1 kilometres to go, Valverde decided to move away from the pack. Grivko tried to follow, but he didn't have the same power as Valverde.
Valverde soon caught Joly, but Joly wasn't dead, he started sprinting immediately Valverde was on his side. It was going to be sooo close.
But Valverde took the victory. Team Maxbo Bianchi's first victory on the ProTour ever Valverde also took the points jersey from Paolini with his victory.
Stage:
1 Alejandro Valverde TEAM MAXBO BIANCHI 5h42'32

Thanks, hopefully I can't loose 45 seconds to Joly and over a minute to Nibali, but mountain timetrialling is my worst so we'll see
It will be posted in some minutes. |

The mountain time trial up the traditional Col d'Eze should finish this year Paris-Nice. Hopefully Valverde can safe his overall victory with a win!
L.L Sanchez, 16th in the GC sat a great time. He took the lead at the finish line with 8 seconds.
Nibali started, and he showed his great abilities, crushing Sanchez leading time with 33 seconds!! Was Valverde's solid lead to Nibali of 1,18 in danger.
Yes, it definately was, Valverde had push it everything he had, and when he reached the line, he could see that he was 1,03 behind Nibali on the stage.
It was enough, Valverde had won Paris-Nice 2008, 15 seconds ahead of Nibali and 33 seconds ahead of Joly.
He also took the green jersey. It was a great tour for Valverde, but for sure, it wasn't easy to take the overall, he felt the pressure every stage.
Valverde was very happy with his wins, and his morale is absolutely perfect. |

I didn't play any stages in Tirreno-Adriatico, except the queen stage and the time trial, but of course I forgot the screenshots
We sended a strong squad for the race, Pliuschin would be our leader, even though he is out of form.
The queen stage was okey for Pliuschin, he was 29th, nearly 3 minutes behhind the winner, Di Luca. But there were many poor time trialist in front of him, so I hoped for a top 15 overall.
The time trial came, and Pliuschin did what he could, but he couldn't put himself inside top 15. But well done from Zabriskie as he managed 4th on the stage.
Stage:
1 Fabian Cancellara TEAM CSC 22'56
2 Sébastien Rosseler QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 22
3 Jens Voigt TEAM CSC + 27
4 David Zabriskie TEAM MAXBO BIANCHI + 44
5 Leif Hoste PREDICTOR - LOTTO + 56
6 Stijn Devolder DISCOVERY CHANNEL + 59
7 Stefan Schumacher CRÉDIT AGRICOLE + 1'02
8 Manuel Quinziato LIQUIGAS s.t.
9 Janez Brajkovic DISCOVERY CHANNEL + 1'03
10 Bert Roesems PREDICTOR - LOTTO + 1'04
Overall:
1 Danilo Di Luca LIQUIGAS 19h46'00
2 Jens Voigt TEAM CSC + 16
3 Samuel Sánchez EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI + 1'02
4 Kim Kirchen T-MOBILE TEAM + 1'10
5 Manuel Lloret TEAM ASTANA + 1'18
6 Damiano Cunego LAMPRE - FONDITAL + 1'28
7 Michael Rasmussen DISCOVERY CHANNEL + 1'30
8 Franco Pellizotti LIQUIGAS s.t.
9 Roberto Heras SAUNIER DUVAL - PRODIR + 1'46

He crashed at the queen stage, the downhill section before the last climb, luckily he didn't get the red cross on the time trial. |
