Also they have a horrible school system, but that's another story.

You're going to have to qualify that statement for me. I've lived and taught in a number of other countries and I can say confidently that from what I've seen, our public school system infrastructure here is far superior. Now, standardized testing and forcing teachers to limit their curriculum by teaching to the test and not to the students' strengths/weaknesses is a problem. But we can't take credit for that debacle. We got that idea from somewhere else. Wink Love to hear your insight on the matter, if you have any.

[EDIT]: I realize now that my last sentence may be interpreted as a bit snotty, but that's not how I meant it, I assure you.

Well first of all, horrible was maybe a little too strong of a word to use, and I apologize for that, however, to answer your question.
I can only go by what I've read and heard about your school system compared to the swedish one. According to several stuides your results are worse then they should be, compared to how good your infrastructure/economy and other things are.
Two of the teachers in my school are american ( one born and raised in philadelphia, and the other Los Angeles, she stuided at UC Berkley later as well before moving to Japan and later Sweden. ), anyway, from what I've gathered from them you have a totaly different way to run things, and I can't say either is better, just different.
We have a more individual program it seems, everyone gets to choose their own courses following their strengths, as long as it gives a qualified education. Also we have a less formal way to talk with teachers ( we only use first names in Sweden to talk with everyone ), which makes it easier to ask for help outside class. This is all personal opinions though, and I could have misunderstood.Wink

actually modern america was founded by religious refuges who fled persecution in england

And given the overwhelming American response, I'll lock this topic.

But I think it would be interesting if we opened up a debate on the school system of different countries
