Our British season continues, minus Ian Field for today's encounter in Southampton, due to family problems. Tom Last inherits the position of team leader, with Ian Killeen as lieutenant.
It was a race that ran to a very similar tune. We hung on to the Yanks' coat-tails until the last 5k where Trebon attacked and my guys hit the wall.
Trebon took the glory again while we gave our fans something small to cheer about with 8th and 9th for Last and Killeen.
Hopefully Last, Field and Killeen will make a distinct improvement soon.

Our first World Cup race through a wildcard was at Ruddervoorde. I sat with Simon, but it was every man for himself out there, with no real tactics.
Daniel Alexander was our top rider in 51st with Last and Field our only other finishers.
This shows the disticnt improvement we'll have to make if we are hoping to have some sort of top flight impact soon.

Back to the British racing scene for me and the team at Ipswich.
Field managed to stay with the strongest riders at the first split, while wearing the continental leaders jersey.
But, by the second split, he was too stretched and I decided he should set his own pace.
This worked, letting him stay in control but keep a high tempo.
While Ian was working hard to hold or increase his position it was Barry Wicks who broke his countryman, Ryan Trebon's, stranglehold on British and American Cyclo-Cross racing.
Ian passed Todd Wells to finish 6th, spurred on by his home crowd.

Leicester is my last race before the team take a break during May and I head off to commentate on the Giro.
Ian Field had won the team's first race of the season a week before in the States so we were determined to do well in front of the nation.
America kept the pace high and, although most dropped off, Field stayed with them.
He stayed at the back of the group and, according to my instructions, placed a surprise attack with 5k to go, on a steep descent.
It nearly worked, but the Americans reacted quickly to catch him with just 1.5k left. Ian couldn't follow fast-finishing Tim Johnson or any of the rest of the group, for that matter, and ended the race 5th.

5 months in and we are surprisingly in second in the Continental Tour thanks to our very hectic US-UK race schedule and surprising form from Ian Field, who occupies second in the Individual Standings.
It has been a good season so far and, although I've seen relatively little racing, I feel I have given at least some help to the team. The riders are showing some distinct improvement and could be winning much more by the end of the season. And hopefully at the end of the season a new manager will be put in place.
We'll be back, firing on all cylinders, in June. |

It's over. The dream is dead.
David Brailsford emailed me to say they were pulling the team out from international competition. I was furious.
I stormed down to BC headquarters and gave him what for! Why pull funding after getting better and better results? Where will the riders go? Have you known this all along? Why did you take me along for the ride when you knew full well that I would never get a proper job with you?
They mumbled some answers about not being an Olympic sport but mainly tried to evade my questions. I blazed out of their, head held high.
I'm fed up of BC, I'm fed up of the stupid politics within British domestic cycling.
I hate it. I'm leaving it alone! |

Im wondering, how do people manage to stealth bump threads by making identical posts to the posts that were already there?

I've just been up for an interview in London with a cycling team. DFL have had quite a good season despite a weak squad with results in cluding a 3rd in the Scheldeprijs. However, when told the team wouldn't continue, manager Eric Vanderaerden attacked the owner of DFL. That was his last act as manager of DFL cyling team. He took his assistant manager, the obvious replacement, with him, leaving 2 spots open.
I went for the interview, hoping it would revive and further my career as a DS, opening doors for next year. I was surprised to see only one other there, a certain Simon Burney. I gave him the cold shoulder before striding into the interviewing room, a meeting room in the Connaught Hotel, near Covent Garden.
I was ushered into a seat by a man in a dark suit, before being greeted by the owner of DFL. We went through the normal interviewing process and I think I did quite well. Although my managing CV is fairly limited he knew I was a good tactitian from my extensive riding days. I left London feeling quite pleased with myself.
.................................................................................................................................................
When I arrived at my home I found a message on my answerphone.
I'd got the job.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently, Simon didn't seem to instill trust, something I wholeheartedly agreed with, and they thought the riders could relate well with me.
This is it.
I'm a pro team manager.
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The squad is of a fair size but, between you and me, it lacks any real stars. Nico Mattan has performed well this season and the others have taken some large steps forward.
Our next 5 races are the Tour de Wallonie, in 2 days time, a race I will attend, Post Danmark Rundt, a race I will not be present at, handing responsibility to my newly hired assistant, Mark Deaney. Then it's time for 2 one-dayers, The Giro de'l Apennino and the Giro del Lazio. Then we head on to a big race for us, the British Road Race Championships, which have, oddly enough, been moved to Liverpool, where Hamish Haynes will hope to strike, as the major Brits tire after long, long seasons.
I hope I can do well in the teams biggest race, the Tour of Britain, coming up in September. But, the Tour de Wallonie is first on my mind where I will have to prove myself to the riders. |

My first race as leader of the team is the 5 day Tour de Wallonnie, a race involving some harsh hills, where Nico Mattan is our leader for GC and Gert Vanderaerden is the teams sprinter. Hamish Haynes, Bernard Sulzberger, Rhys Pollock, Kane Oakley, Cameron Jennings and Jeremy Vennel are the supporting acts.
The first stage is flat according to the race handbook but I have no doubt that moves will be made on that final climb for the stage and the yellow jersey.
A break went but made no headway and, on the final climb as I had said, the big moves went. I shouted into my mouthpiece for Nico to follow and off he went in hot pursuit.
But, the riders seemed to give up over the top of the climb, only having a small gap. I told Nico to keep going, hoping the sprinters teams would be tired after a lot of work before and on the climb and, therefore, would play poker with each other. And they did, allowing Nico to get a 30 second gap! He had to work hard as, with 5k to go, the sprinters teams turned it on.
The gap was depleted quickly and he was hanging off the front of the bunch near the start of the sprint. I wasn't too worried though, because I had given Hamish the job of keeping Gert at the front which he did, before dropping back, leaving him well placed as it all kicked off.
The gap was down to 10 metres with 100 metres left and looking dangerous for Nico, especially as Gert was boxed in behind.
But Nico held on to take the win in my first race in charge! Gerts 4th was the icing on a huge celebratory cake!
Yellow is also on the shoulders of our former Gent-Wevelgem winner, who thanked me for my tactics during the race. I was really proud.

There are two hard hills early today but, unless a breakaway makes it, it should be a day for the sprinters.
The break was badly organised and wouldn't work together, so we could rely on the sprinters teams to pull it back and, coming into the sprint, Gert was well placed at the front, whereas Nico looked out of contention next to Hamish.
I told Gert to go for it with about 100m to go but he saw a good opening a bit earlier and kicked, something I was rather pleased with when he took the lead with 70m to go.
Nico had made up some places, but still looked like he was out of it, with Hamish just out of shot, behind him.
But it all changed. Sutton burst past Gert towards the checquered flag and Nico burst through a gap.
We took 2nd and 3rd, another good result which means that our man Mattan keeps yellow and Hamish snatched a sneaky 9th.
