Naud is an awesome rider, and Pichon despite a year of decline should still be good quality Grin

Congrats on Moschetti. I really wanted this guy, as you could see in the FA thread. But yeah, one overpaid Italian is enough Cool
Some other nice signings, guess you'll have some fun soon Smile

@jandal7: Hope that Naud can not only help the sprinter holding on to the front, but also has a breakaway win potential. Pichon may never win anything but hope he can collect a few points here and there.

@Fabianski: Moschetti can become an ok sprinter some day and I wanted at least one stronger talent this season, maybe he can drain you budget next season with some deal Wink

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kris Boeckmans 17th in Down Under Classic was a scary start for one of our star.

Came to Tour Down Under with a little hope, and in what was a strange race for all came out with almost nothing

After Down Under Classic if was great to see Boeckmans in Tour of Qatar, just missing a PT stage win to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Ben Swift, no division point here of course but a kick to get the team spirit back up.

PTHC race Tour of East Java was our first race for climber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Daniel Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kunshin simply leading the pack over the cat.1 climb took the KoM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Daniel Martin came 6th in GC, 2nd best of the PCT teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/East%20Java/JavaS2%208.jpg

Last race was C1 Clasique Pico Basile, again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Daniel Martin in great shape although he could not hold on to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Justo Tenorio in the last brutal km, and ended 2nd a very good result.

All i all a month with more ups than downs and we are unexpectedly 3rd in the division rankings, fingers crossed that this will help us not relegate.

February was one of the important months for us spending a lot of race days, taking part in 7 races, one PT stage race, one PTHC classic, two HC stage races, one C1 classic, and two C1 stage races.

We opened with 4 race days in Tour of the Middle East, a race where both Daniel Martin and Kris Boeckmans took part, Martin according to sports media a podium candidate, Boeckman a top 5 favorite on the two flat stages. We also brought Kunshin, Kebede and Naud investing a lot in this race.

The first stage did not play out as we hoped with Boeckman 10th, to top that Boeckman was nowhere to be seen at the 2nd stage, but then as the race really started on the semi mountain day three, Daniel Martin came 2nd and on the Queen stage he finished 3rd to end 2nd in GC.

Martin won the close fight for 2nd at day three in Tour of the Middle East.

In Next was PTHC classic Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, we had Ricardo Ferreira as an outsider, with a goal of a top 10-15. Ricardo had splendid legs and attacked from 30 km from a favorite group of 15 riders. He did not stay away for long but it secured a spot in the 11 riders group closing in on the finish line and he made it 7th a great result for the team here.

Then we participated in our divisions own cobbled classic of the month C1 Gent – Wevelgem, we could only sent 6 riders with 50% only 23 years old, as we had two clashing HC races. Ricardo Ferreira again our strongest card anticipating to fight for approx. a top 10.

Young Filippo Rocchetti took us to the TV screens early taking part in the morning breakaway. Ferreira took part in the attack from the distance but did not make it, but instead he sprinted brilliant from a large 2nd group to make top 5, again a very good result for us.

At the same day we started 5 stages HC race Tour de Slovenie with Laurent Pichon as leader. With a mixed race of TTT, ITT and Hills very hard to value our options in this one but we had hopes to get a GC around top 15 pre-race.

The first stage was the TTT, we lost 2'26 sort of expected at 15Th place. At the 2nd stage we got two riders in the breakaway, 33 years old veteran Federico Rocchetti (The Mascot) with young Japanese Yosukue Matsumoto. Laurent Pichon had a bad day, now at 4’58 in GC. The third stage flat, again we got Rocchetti in the break otherwise nothing for us. Next up the ITT, Mark Christian out best as 18th, Laurent Pichon at 12'35 in GC after the stage and any hope of a little success here is fading completely, and the final hilly stage does not change the fact that we took nothing from this race.

The team in the TTT

While Slovenie was still going we also started 3 stages C1 race Ras Tailteann, A completely flat race. We brought Kris Boeckmans expecting a top 10 result or better.
Boeckmans 2nd at the first stage starting at the high note, with an off day at the 2nd stage as 15th and a solid 4th at the last day, he ended 4th in GC, clearly outperforming our expectations.

Boeckmans 2nd the first day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S1/15.jpg

Then we had a wildcard for 7 stages at PT race Tirreno-Adriatico, sending Daniel Martin with the strongest climbing squad we can provide. According to sports journalists he was considered an outsider expecting to finish just outside top 10.

Stage one was the prologue Martin lost 14” so nothing to worry about. At the flat 2nd stage Filippo Fiorelli put us on the TV screens, making the breakaway and a shared KoM lead. The hilly 3rd stage ended in a mass sprint where top sprinter Groenewegen took the stage in front of the GC favorites no impact on our GC but Fiorelli fell back in the KoM fight.

Next the first of two mountain stages expected to decide the GC. At stage 4 Ikibe attempted to join the early breakaway but was reeled in, but Martin came in 10th and moved to 13th in the GC now in a good position to meet expectations. On stage 5 we had no rider in the breakaway, within the last 10 km Martin plays it aggressively opening the first attack, not strong enough to stay with the best but securing another 10th. moving to 7th in GC. The hilly 6th stage was won by the breakaway and the flat 7th in a mass sprint.
Martin ended 7th in this high level race a result he can be very proud of.

Our last race of the month was 5 stages C1 race Tour of Southland. We attend with a squad led by Laurent Pichon. We are clearly outsiders here and could not expect much more than a top 20 result. We did not bring a sprinter and could not expect anything from the three flat stages.

We had no rider in the breakaway at stage one, completely anonymous day for us. Stage two was a different beast with a hard uphill finish, again no Campari rider in the break but never mind Pichon with a great 7th at the stage moving to 13th in GC. Stage three another flat and we got Filippo Fiorelli in the breakaway, otherwise another unimportant day for us. Stage 4 the last puncher stage, we did not take part in the break and never mind as Pichon won the stage in a close sprint between 11 riders, moving to 2nd in GC and taking both Points and KoM lead. The last stage was a flat and we did not take part in the breakaway, but as we ended 2nd in GC, KoM, and U25 classifications a brilliant race for us compared to what anyone would have expected.

March was another huge month for us in terms of race day, again taking part in 7 races, one PTHC stage race, one HC classic, one HC stage race, three C1 classics and one C1 stage race.

We opened with 4 days in Barbados Cycling Festival, a flat race with Kris Boeckmans as leader with Patrick Naud as first lead-out, Francisco Lasca as secondary sprinter. The sports journalists in general expected to see Kris Boeckmans just outside top 10 though often points to his superior acceleration that could take him higher.

At stage one Naud join the breakaway, he does quite well taking extra TV interest with a late attack but the break was reeled in. Taking the perfect wheel of Caleb Ewan Boeckmans comes 3rd in a photo finish between three riders. At stage two Japanese Yuma Koishi joins the break making it to 2nd in the KoM, Boeckmans make it to 5th in another close sprint with consistent results he takes the GC lead. At stage three we had no one in the breakaway and with Boeckmans coming in as 7th we lost the GC lead to Peter Kennaugh, but 2nd in GC is wonderful and just one stage left. One the last stage things took a bad turn for us with Kris Boeckmans falling back with about 2 km left and coming in as 12th. Never the less a great 7th in GC with Yuma Koishi 2nd in KoM made this a great race for us fighting at this level.

Already after stage one in Barbados we started the first of 4 days in C1 De Panne Tour, with Ricardo Ferreira as our leader. We could expect a result in the low end of top 10.

Ferreira played stage one very aggressive by joining the morning breakaway, a bit unlucky to puncture but make it back to the breakaway, and his opportunistic riding was rewarded when the break was caught finishing 3rd as also points leader. The first day was very hard and we started day two with just Ferreira and Federico Rocchetti, we say a lot less action after yesterday’s chaos, the race coming to a reduced mass sprint. Ferreira 8th, 2nd in GC, leading the points.

The third stage was a sprinter stage on paper unimportant, but as Ricardo Ferreira finish 11th a got a few bonus sec. to become race leader. In the ITT Ferreira lost some positions and finished the GC as 3rd still winning the points, all in all a fantastic race for us.

In the meantime with other riders still fighting in De Panne Tour we took part in Roma Maxima, as we had Ferreira occupied, cobble lieutenant Clement Lhotellerie would lead his first race for us. We could realistically hope for top 10 or in a perfect world maybe a little better.

We did not show ourselves much in the race, but Lhotellerie stayed focused and saved energy enough to get in with the 2nd group as 8th, a very fine result for us from our 2nd best cobbler.

Clement Lhotellerie with the larger favorite group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Roma/19.jpg

After the end of De Panne we finally had a few days without races, then Le Samyn came up on our calendar. Another cobbled classic. This time we could send Ricardo Ferreira with lieutenant Clement Lhotellerie to back him up. We also had top sprinter Kris Boeckmans at the lineup, not as a favorite this time just to attract more attention from his Belgian home crowd. As in other cobbled classics our aim was inside top 10.

Young Filippo Rocchetti got into the breakaway, so we did not need to hunt that down, but sadly they got caught early and we did not make it into the 2nd one. As oppose to what we expected is turned out to be great having Kris Boeckmans today. Very unselfish he was able to stay with Ferreira in crucial moments right up to the final km’s, and being ok on the stones himself he made a fine 17th and more important was the most important helper for Ricardo Ferreira to come in 4th. Another unexpected great result for Campari/Asahi development.

Then the 6 stages HC race Vuelta a Colombia, we got Daniel Martin as leader with Estifanos Kebede as support. Sports journalists saw Martin as a top 5 candidate.

Stage one a relative flat day for the sprinter teams, we got Patrick Naud in the breakaway securing overnight KoM lead. Stage two the first hard test for the GC favorites, three riders from the breakaway won the stage, Martin best of the GC favorites moved to 5th in GC. Stage three maybe an even harder challenge for the climbers, Martin came in 7th falling to 6th in GC.

Stage 4 a sprinter day, rest day for us. Then stage 5 “queen stage”, Matsumoto took part in the breakaway but very invisible besides just being there. Martin came in 9th, enough to advance to GC 5th. Finally stage 6 another climber stage, quite hard but with downhill finish, the breakaway took it and no time lost or gained for the favorites, coming hope in a larger group. Daniel Martin finishes 5th in GC.

Martin sprinting for 4th at the 2nd stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/VaC/219.jpg

While still in Vuelta a Colombia we also took part in Apex Mountain Classic with climber lieutenant Aleksej Kunshin as leader. We had high hopes for top 10, but a more realistic approach would be to aim for inside top 15. Aleksej Kunshin was in a 17 rider group chasing 3 escaped favorites, but lost additional tome on the downhill, not able to be one of the 15 riders sprinting for 4th, he came in at 20th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/AMC/23.jpg

Last race of March would be Kuurne - Bruxelles – Kuurne, we would attend with both cobbles leader Ricardo Ferreira and lieutenant Clement Lhotellerie and Patrick Naud as our breakaway hope. We was aiming for a result around top 10.

Tt was decided Naud should stay back and help, instead it was first Jung and later Moschetti attacking and sitting in the early very huge breakaway. The break came to nothing and disaster struck the team, with leader Ricardo Ferreira having a mechanical.
He came back and with fantastic support from Clement Lhotellerie he stayed with the favorites quite long, but either due to the technical problem or just not his day, our duo ended 14th and 15th, not a great but an acceptable result everything taken into account..

Ferreira and Lhotellerie sitting in the pursuit, sadly the cracked and was later overtaken by riders from behind

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Samyn/Samyn%2026.jpg

After Vuelta a Colombia MGUCI published the 2nd annual report, and that was fantastic new’s for us, as we were the unexpected leader of MG’s 2nd division, taken into account that we have used a lot of race days and also had plenty of good luck, not a situation we can expect will continue.
