I was hoping he could make back the time to Lutsenko in the final stage (figured it would be impossible against Dumoulin) but the gaps were small in the time - trial.

The many cobbled sections on the course and a very strong pace set up by Jumbo-Visma in pursue of a large breakaway group saw the main group getting smaller and smaller as the kilometers passed. Lars Boom and Soren Kragh Andersen saw this as an opportunity for attack but Maarten Wynants and Mike Teunissen made sure their move didn't last long as with Danny Van Poppel in the main group, Jumbo had all reasons in the World to see this one end in a sprint.
Van Aert moves Van Poppel to the front
Wout Van Aert did a splendid job in lead Van Poppel out and the Dutch rider was on a totally different speed compared to the others in the final kilometers to claim his first win of the season.
No on was able to spoil Van Poppel's party this time as the Dutchman crossed the line with his hands up

The breakaway
By the time we hit the slopes of the Capo Bert the breakaway of the day, which included Sunweb's prodigy Lennard Kamna, was already history. The teams seemed determined more than ever to see this one end in a sprint.
Groupama-FDJ and Astana controlling the pack on Cipressa
Seeing that a lot of teams were aiming for the mass sprint today was good news for Dyland Groenewegen, but as we were heading for Poggio disaster stroke for the former Dutch champion as he was involved in a mass crash in the peloton. Matthews, Colbrelli, Alaphilippe, Formolo and Fuglsang were also among the riders that hid the tarmac.
Groenewegen picks up his bike but his dreams of victory are over
After leading out Ackermann in Tirreno, we saw Peter Sagan doing again some brilliant work for the team as he set up the pace in the pack on Poggio. Behind him, Jumbo were trying to regroup without Groenewegen.
As we approached the top of the Poggio we saw what would turn out to be the most serious attack of the race from Oliver Naesen and Jasper Stuyven.
But they were neutralized before the end of the climb as it was now UAE times to take over the relay in the pack.
It's a very narrow donwhill from the top of the Poggio and positioning is very important if you want to have a shot at winning the first Monument of the year. Van Aert and Martens tried to guide Van Poppel, who was now Jumbo's best hope on a good result, on the downhill.
Ferrari and Van Aert were the first riders to enter the Via Roma. While Gaviria was in a very good position following Ferrari closely, news were not as good for Van Poppel who had lost Martens wheel, who was right behind Van Aert.
It appears that Gaviria opened the sprint too early as he was clearly losing speed in the last 500 meters of the race with Viviani and Ackermann making up serious ground on the Colombian.
And it's Elia Viviani who takes it for Deceuninck-QuickStep! What better way to win La Primavera than while wearing the Italian colors. Ackermann took advantage of Viviani's splistream to finish second, while Gaviria had to settle for third.

Ineos felt pretty generous letting the breakaways win two stages and letting two others come pretty close. They weren't as generous when it came to mountain stages and giving Froome his first victories of the season. After destroying everyone in the third stage, Chris showed once again who was boss in the next stage when he won the sprint of the favorites group to claim another stage win.
Froome sprints past Wilco Kelderman to claim the win
Steven Kruijswijk with another trade mark top 10 here, while Sepp Kuss also continued his good season with a top 15 finish. Sepp was 20th after the fourth stage but managed to get into the winning breakaway of stage 5 to move a few places up the GC.
Burgos put 4 riders in the breakaway in the last stage hoping Ineos would let this one survive as well

The short climbs and the cobblestones saw the pack getting thiner and thiner with each kilometer that passed. But with 4 Jumbo riders still left at the front of the race things were looking great for Dylan Groenewegen.
Jumbo controlling the final kilometers
After a great work made by Teunissen and Van Aert, it was Danny Van Poppel who launched Groenewegen in the final kilometer. Two Frenchmen, Demare and Laporte were there to contest the victory as well but they were no match for Dylan's speed.

Plenty of moves after the last cobbled section of the day was finished with Edvald Boasson Hagen and Ian Stannard being the riders who spent the most time at the front of the race. Greg Van Avermaet seemed also very determined to put his finger print on the racing.
But it was not them who was in the lead with 5km to go. It was a group of 3 consisting of Dylan Van Baarle, Peter Sagan and Jasper Stuyven.
The three couldn't stay in front for too long either as the group was caught from behind by 3 other riders with 2km to go with another group not far behind either. Zdenek Stybar, Mathieu Van der Poel and Nils Politt were the newest additions to the leading group.
The fastest riders in the group fought for the victory inside the last kilometer in what announced itself as being a very close finish. Stuyven, Sagan and Van der Peol were almost at the same level with 300 meters to go.
Sagan was the only one of them able to kick it off one last time just before the finish line and after seeing him doing some brilliant team work in some of the previous races it was now his time to shine.

The rain and the wind made the race extremely hard and this gave attackers ideas that they could have a chance at this. Even riders would could have waited for the final sprint ended up on the attack on a few occasions.
But with a fantastic work from Van Aert, Van Poppel, Van Emden and Teunissen with 5km to go we had a group of about 20 riders in front of the race. A group which included Dylan Groenewegen who was after yet another win.
It was Admund Jansen who set up an extremely high pace in the final kilometers with Groenewegen right in his wheel. Colbrelli and Sagan were quick to put themselves behind the Dutch rider but their earlier efforts in the race got the better of them and they weren't able to follow Jansen's pace as we entered the final kilometer.
It was Boasson Hagen and Bryan Coquard who tried to stop Groenewegen but once again the former Dutch champion delivered after an amazing team work.

The big moves of the day started on Taaienberg when Naesen and Vanmarcke went on the attack. This broke the peloton apart with the favorites spread across multiple groups behind them. Eventually 3 more riders (Stuyven, Sagan and Terpstra) were able to join them and the five of them were leading the race with 10km to go
Naesen was clearly the strongest rider today and he attacked one more time on the last cobbled section of the day going for a solo win.
The first victim of this move was Terpstra, with the other 3 being able to keep a small distance to Naesen. Sagan wasn't doing to well either and he eventually cracked as the other two pushed very hard to catch Naesen and have an all Belgium battle for the win and podium today
Stuyven was the strongest sprinter in the group and he showed that as he crossed the finish line in first place despite a very powerful performance put it by Naesen. For Jumbo it wasn't exactly the best day with Van Aert barely making it into the top 10.

The race marks the return to racing of Timo Roosen after a really bad crash in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne as well as Dylan Groenewegen's last race for about a month and a half when his preparation for the Tour de France will start with the 4 Jours de Dunkerque.
Given the terrain the race was always going to end in a mass sprint and it became a duel between the lead outs in the closing kilometers. Roosen's lack of race days proved quite problematic though as Richeze was quite faster than him and put Hodeg in the best position possible.
Groenewegen was forced to take Hodeg's wheel with 1 kilometer to go but that didn't seem to bother Dylan as he flew by the Colombian in the last few hundred meters of the race to claim another victory.
Groenewegen must be the fastest guy in the pro peloton at the moment

I doubt that. Not enough flat stages and it will be harder to win even those with more and better sprinters around.

Tony Martin leads the pack on the first pass of Oude Kwaremont
Surprisingly, we had a very small breakaway with only 4 riders today. As soon as we entered the last 100km, Groupama-FDJ became very active with both Demare and Kung making some moves. Kung's move was stronger and together with Koren he managed to join the breakaway. But, by the time we passed Oude Kwaremont for the second time all six have been caught by the pack.
The next cobbled sectors broke the pack apart and after Taaienberg only 18 riders were left in the favorites group: Van Avermaet, Terpstra, Naesen, Vanmarcke, Stybar, Van Aert and Sagan were all there.
On the last pass of Oude Kwaremont, Oliver Naesen went to the front of the group and set up a pace which would saw the front group reduced to eleven riders at the top
The biggest victim of Naesen's pace proved to be Mathieu Van der Poel as the Dutch champion saw his hopes of winning ruined with 17 kilometers left from the race
The front group broke further apart after the pass of Patenberg with Van Avermaet taking hold of things now. Naesen, Stybar, Terpstra, Politt and Kristoff were able to follow the CCC rider. Behind them, a chasing group was formed by Vanmarcke, Sagan and Van Aert, while Van Baarle and Stuyven seemed to have given up on getting back
In the next kilometers only Vanmarcke was able to make the jump from the chasing group to the front, while Kristoff seemed to have used too much any energy to stay with the best on Paatenber and has now been dropped from the front group
Inside the last 5 kilometers, Oliver Naesen felt he had a way better chance of winning the race with an attack that waiting for the final sprint. And he managed to put in a very strong move which seemed like it might be enough to take the win
But behind him, Politt, Vanmarcke and Stybar were putting in some very good turns and with 1 kilometer to go, it could go either way. Stybar and Van Avermaet proved to be the only riders to still have something left in the tank though and they went on to challenge Naesen inside the final kilometer
And it's Van Avermaet who saved his energy best in the last kilometer of the race and he manages to sprint by Naesen just as the AG2R rider was about to celebrate the biggest victory of his career. But instead it's the Olympic champion who gets his first Ronde van Vlaanderen win.
