Nah, They've only beaten very poor Russia and Wales teams. They have a good chance of getting passed the Czechs in the next round, but I reckon (most likely) Germany will beat them in the semi's.
Can't really see passed the French for the overall win.
I don't trust Germany to make deep run - they barely drew against Hungary in Munich no less.

I neither expect much from Germany to be honest, but then again it`s how a tournament goes.
Italy was incredible in the group but were pretty lucky against Austria now.
Netherlands were rather strong in the group but lost now against Czech Republic.
Germany struggled in the Group, but then again a team like Hungary, that basically were defending very well but didn`t do a lot themselves, doesn`t suit the German team a lot as they seem to struggle to create space when the oppoenent is defending well.
England should be giving Germany a lot more room, where this "weakness" is less of a factor.
That said, even though the actual bracked half of Germany looking pretty easy and same for England once whoever the winner is, games like the most recent show that you can`t be too sure. |

Fortunately for everyone else, the French couldn't see past themselves winning either. Thought they would stroll past Switzerland and came up short.

So what's everyone thinking for the QFs?
For me it's England V Denmark and Spain V Belgium in the SF.
Belgium V Italy is probably a flip of a coin so wouldn't be surprised to see Italy go through. Also wouldn't be surprised to see the Suisse beat Spain. Spain have looked very iffy at the back and, despite scoring 10 goals in the last 2 games, are very wasteful up front.
On the other side I can't look past England and Denmark. As an England fan it's not often I am confident about a win in the knock-out phase of a tournament, but after last nights matches I just can't see how the Ukraine can beat this England team.

As an England fan too, I'm less confident to be honest. Feel like they've got a slip up against a worse team in them. I'm pretty sure based on strength England should beat Ukraine and Denmark but I really wouldnt be surprised if one of them nicked a goal and then just sat back and they couldn't break them down.
I'd almost be more ok against a better team as I think they're set up to bore and counterattack and hold the lead, not break down 2 banks of 4
Regarding the other side of the draw, Spain and Italy with Italy going through i think? They've both got too much for the Swiss and Belgians imo

England has a wide open road to the final now.
Belgium can beat Italy with KDB, but it's a mystery if he can play. Without him, we're lost.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Football is the same cruel joke it has become. VAR is just another tool in the hands of the powers that be. |

VAR in this tournament has just been there doing nothing, can’t remember a decision that was reverted. |

Tbf, I'd rather have too little than too much VAR interference. I simply think refs (and probably the UEFA that gave them some pointers) are still figuring out how to use it in the "best way". Though yes, that obviously should have been overturned. But even if it was, it felt like England could have scored in the remaining 15 minutes, had they really pressed for it (hypothetical, of course, but still). I would have been thrilled for Denmark to make it to the finals, like most people probably, but in my opinion, the two best teams of the tournament now face each other in the final, which is also nice and I look forward to it a lot.

Just to step in as a qualified FA Referee (still fun to be able to pull this one in conversation )...
Firstly, England missed out a close 50/50 call prior on the other side of the box when contact was made with Kane. But in that case the Danish player (can't remember who) just got the smallest tiniest touch on the ball to sway the Refs mind.
Then because there was that touch, VAR can't really overturn the onfield.
As we move the Sterling one, there's no foot contact, but the Danish player (again can't remember who) does bring his upper body across into contact with Raheem, aiding his fall (yes he was already going down but wait).
In this case the Ref does blow for the penalty, and because there is that upper body contact VAR can't really overturn the onfield.
In both cases the Ref in the middle has the final say, and he should! And over the two incidents things i feel balance out. If VAR was to change one call it should change the other, and England still get a penalty chance to win the match.
Denmark played really well in the first half but you could see them losing steam through the second and with subs. They just couldn't get the ball for a period to recover, and it was inevitable they would concede a penalty or free kick in a dangerous space. Full credit they played really well though!
Now on VAR and Penalties, i'm hoping we can see something brought in for the future about Laser Pointers!
We've all seen the video showing the laser light being shone at Kasper prior to the penalty. I hope we can get a law that allows VAR to step in and say there was outside interference and it should be re-taken.
_____
Overall the quality of the refereeing in this Euros has been sensational! Absolutely top class! Best i think i've ever seen in mens or womens tournaments.
Decisions have been quick and accurate, games managed fairly and openly to encourage good football. Player tempers have been kept fairly low and games have been tense and fast.

I think that is the main problem with the VAR, certain decisions he can overturn, while others he can't. Yesterday there was the tiniest amount of contact, so it wasn't a "clear and obvious error". Yet a 3 cm offside with questionable methods of determining when the pass was given somehow is a clear and obvious error.
VAR can check if a penalty was given correctly, but if you score from a free kick, he can't check if the free kick was given correctly.
VAR can check a straight red card, but not a second yellow card.
What bothered me yesterday is that the referee wasn't even called to the review screen. The decision is still his, but he has a chance to review the phase from different angles.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

This has become absurd the "clear and obvious error" falacy has been driving me nuts. It's a dive and it's clear and it is obvious. The decision should have been reverted. The simple fact that this has caused so much controversy is enough proof of that.
They should start picking up refs (at least VAR refs) based on courage and decision-making skills rather than robots who implement faulty guidelines which clearly undermine the true spirit of the game.
It's 2021 and we're still awarding divers.
That said, England were clearly the better side.

It wasn't a clear dive. If it was it would have been reversed. The second defender makes contact with Sterling with his thigh into Sterling's hip. That is why the penalty wasn't overturned.
Ultimately I think if the penalty wasn't given England would have won anyway. The second half of extra time was basically England passing it around. There were 3 or 4 times they could have gone for the goal, but turned around and just kept possession.
Overall, it was a very close game for 60 minutes. Then Denmark started making subs and the replacements were clearly not as strong as the original team. As soon as Dolberg and Damsgaard when off the game was lost for Denmark. They never looked like scoring after that and it was attack versus defence for the last 20 minutes of the original 90 and the whole of extra time.
The final will be 50/50, but I think England will try to keep it tight for the first 60/70 minutes and then make use of our bench. When you consider that players like Grealish, Foden, Sancho, Rashford, Henderson, Bellingham, Chilwell and James have barely had a kick all tournament you can see how strong our bench is.
Anyway, whatever happens this England team have achieved more than I ever expected them too. Whatever happens on Sunday I will be counting it as a major achievement to have got to the final for the first time ever. I think the best two teams in the tournament are in the final, so whoever wins on Sunday will be worthy winners.

Penalties, the real nemesis of England, and Donnarumma didn’t even have to take off his gloves. |

Thoroughly deserved for Italy, but gutted for the England players. No idea why they sent the 19 year old to take the final penalty (nothing against Saka, to be sure). It was a fantastic tournament overall though, I have to say. Enjoyed it a lot.
