Stage 6 and a tiny bump constitutes a mountain (with KOM points available) on this flat stage.

farm3.static.flickr.com/2031/2626645792_a4d4f89b24_o.jpg

Sabaido tries to steal the KOM points but was so weak up the hill that the breakaway didn't even need to counter.

Coming to the finish line Cooke can't repeat his heroics of yesterday and has to settle for 3rd. Stage victor Pietropelli (LPR) takes the leader's jersey.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2625825443_ddf78cb4a6_o.jpg

Brief Results:
1. Pietropelli (LPR)
2. Biondo (Flaminia)
3. Cooke (Barloworld)

Overall:
1. Biondo (Flaminia)

Only 3 stages left and the yellow jersey keeps getting swapped around by these sprinters.

188km of mostly flat terrain. The leader's jersey could change again.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/2626698770_9e6fa05291_o.jpg

At the finish Pietropolli (LPR) shows he's red-hot right now and takes his 2nd consecutive win and the lead of the race to go with his points lead. Vicioso (LA-MSS) and Paolini (Aqua) follow him to the line. Baden once again made top 10 but he's struggling to match the speed of these younger guys.

Uphill! At last something different and this stage should give Pfannberger get some racing. He's lacking fitness right now and is on light training but hopefully he'll manage to get ahead of the bunch on the climb to the line. The stage preview made the climb sound very difficult but the course topology looked less severe:

farm4.static.flickr.com/3074/2625886019_dcf5c0b50f_o.jpg

28km from the line Paolini (Aqua) launches a surprise attack that Pietropolli (LPR), Vicioso (LA-MSS), Joly (FdJ), Simoni (Serramenti) among others counter.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3156/2625887773_3becd430e6_o.jpg

11km from the line and I radio Christian to give the climb a shot.

* Unfortunately I didn't take a snapshot of the finish

Simoni out-battled Vicioso on the uphill finish with Joly just behind. Vicioso takes the yellow jersey by a very slim 3" heading into the final day criterium.

Brief Result:
1. Simoni (Serramenti)
2. Vicioso (LA-MSS) @ s.t.
3. Joly (FdJ) @ s.t.
4. Glomser @ 31"
...
11. Pfanberger (Barloworld) @ 50"

2. Pietropolli (LPR) @ 3"

The final day of a long race and its a short 78km ride around Kuala Lumpur's city streets. The yellow jersey needs to be decided today. Only 3 seconds separates Vicioso (LA-MSS) from Pietropolli (LPR) The protagonists have one less rival to worry about also as top sprinter Allan Davis (Mitsubishi) was involved in a crash yesterday and was forced to withdraw from the race.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/2625941743_b87b707e8a_o.jpg

Cooke, who was hoping to sign off with a win today, takes a bend too sharply and falls heavily. He gets up and radios that he's hurting but wants to finish the race. Bad luck!
farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2626763044_4d2e7fd876_o.jpg

The final showdown fails to materialise and Pollack (Volksbank), who won the first stage, takes the last ahead of Biondo (Flaminia) and Omloop (Mitsubishi). Vicioso (LA-MSS) and Pietropolli (LPR) finish beside each other without ever looking like they would get to the front. A difficult day yesterday for them it seems.

Brief Results:
1. Pollack (Volksbank)
2. Biondo (Flaminia)
3. Omloop (Mitsubishi)

I simulated a few of the smaller races; here are the results:

A great win for Hunter as he outsprints 3 superstar sprinters in Brown (Rabobank), McEwen (Lottto) and Freire (Rabobank). Gasparotto's 8th is good also.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3103/2626791158_07a07cd77d_o.jpg

2 days later see Hunter and Gasparotto in flying form as they take 2nd and 4th respectively behind the Polish surprise winner Zaradny (DFL) in Stage 1 of the Giro di Reggio Calabria.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/2626792882_e458057ff4_o.jpg

A breakaway succeeds the next day on Stage 2 but Gasparotto manages to claim 5th in the stage and overall.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3071/2625975181_b45885c408_o.jpg

An amazing finish to the 2.1 rated Tour as Hunter leads home Gasparotto for a Barloworld 1-2. Gasparotto claims 5th overall. The 2 stars are looking so strong right now even though the medical staff had told me they haven't even reached 70% yet! Even so, we must keep an eye on them as their major targets are late season and its still February now.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3033/2626796260_3810d389ac_o.jpg

Hunter can't be stopped as he wins yet another race; this time it's Stage 1 of the Giro della Provincia.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3022/2626798046_f678a1bf17_o.jpg

Stage 2 sees Hunter claim third behind Rigotto (Milram). He still leads overall.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3282/2625980351_bdf221e906_o.jpg

Who can compete with this? Barloworld's 2nd 1-2 in 5 days and Hunter takes the overall. He's rated #1 on the Continental Tour and this will doubt help us getting wildcards and invites to the big races.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/2626801506_04aa2b892b_o.jpg

Bellotti puts in a decent effort in Italy.

Scognamiglio watches on as Di Luca (LPR) wins the prestigious GP di Lugano.

After our early season success led by Hunter, Gasparotto and Cooke, Barloworld has been invited to many of the upcoming ProTour races, such as Paris-Nice and Tirenno Adriatico. Our sponsors have requested that we send strong teams to these events to maximise our team's exposure.

Therefore some of the small Continental Tour races will have to take a back seat. The first of these is the 5-day Vuelta a Murcia stage race.

Many ProTour climbers are competing due to the testing nature of the race. We've sent a below-strength squad to Spain, led by the climbers Dueñas and Bellotti and will be simulating these races with summarised results.

Tuscany and its the new Classics-style race, the Monte Paschi Eroica. Inaugurated last year, this year sees it move to March and the Classics racing season. The race is noted for its 70km of gravel roads that will provide stern bike handling skills and endurance.

Gasparotto believes this race will suit him and is joined by Hunter and Cooke.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3188/2628589592_93fd180599_o.jpg

150km and we've already reached the first gravel section. The wind is high and the pace is high enough for the riders to have to ride single file. A couple of our domestiques are finding things tough already.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/2628591770_cb23e83144_o.jpg

Hunter has the Continental Tour leader's jersey on today and is riding with Cooke.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3164/2627776087_3fa1ef1991_o.jpg

Gasparotto, Hunter and Cooke are part of a large group at the head of the field that is powering away from the peleton as we wind through the beautiful Tuscan countryside. A lone rider, Trenti (Liquigas), is away but is tiring quickly.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3272/2627778179_36b1e88d43_o.jpg

Trenti is caught by the lead group of 23 riders that contains Gasparotto and Cooke. Hunter is dropped behind and we instruct him to go easy.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2627780113_b62e240c34_o.jpg

16km to go and with the leaders beginning to get strung out, Gasparotto attacks! Only Sacchi (Preti) responds. Have they gone too early?
farm4.static.flickr.com/3076/2627782075_1f39733059_o.jpg

Saachi's proving too strong and leaves Gasparotto behind, who is hurting.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2627783957_1d2358267c_o.jpg

Saachi takes the win and Gasparotto is passed in the last 2km.

A decent effort by Gasparotto for this early season race and he shows he can handle difficult terrain. Only he and Cooke finish for us today as the difficult conditions meant only 51 riders finished.

It's our first big stage race of the year and we join the ProTour teams for the historic Paris-Nice.

Our team physio told me Hunter and Gasparotto were showing signs of a bit too much early season racing (15 days each) for such low training levels. So, we decide to give both of them the rest of March off and continue following their training schedule.

Paris-Nice has some good climbing stages this year, so we bring Soler to gauge his progress and provide him with a climbing partner in Cárdenas.

Stage 1 is an 7.6km Individual Time Trial (ITT), not a real goal for us, so we'll let it to the prologue specialists battle it out.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3086/2628636272_82672da939_o.jpg

In miserable conditions, Soler heads for the line. Impey is our fastest rider so far, and is 18" down on the time set by Lancaster (Milram).
farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/2628639766_b65e74158f_o.jpg

Hincapie shows his power as he crosses the line.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3083/2627823839_692242d4d7_o.jpg

Kloden, one of the GC favourites, sprints across the line to save every second.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3064/2627825595_bd14b01805_o.jpg

Dekker puts in a good performance and will take the win.

186km to Nevers. Rabobank will keep an eye on things no doubt and a sprint finish is expected.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3120/2628021699_d6c9839ff0_o.jpg

We get into an early break with Calcagni and they are working well together. He takes the day's only KOM points unchallenged and will be in polka-dot tomorrow.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/2628023413_85ac456ff5_o.jpg

56km out and Klier, LL Sanchez and Mondory attempt an audacious bid to bridge to the breakaway.

Portal clearly has been notified by his DS that him teammate Sanchez is coming up. We tell Calcagni to attack again.

The peleton led by Rabobank eventually catches them all and we're set for the sprint. Some real sprinting legends are in contention.

Stage 3 starts quite flat but there are a few tricky hills towards the end of this stage that could catch a few of the pure sprinters out. With Rabobank looking for the points jersey to go with Dekker's yellow, this finish looks made for Freire.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3265/2628866534_ed5fb2f619_o.jpg

Calcagni's looking good in his KOM jersey although we fully expect to lose it today.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3105/2628050303_d6816953db_o.jpg

The talented Karsten Kroon was part of the breakaway and is starting to shake off his fellow escapees. However the Rabobank and Lampre trains and dragging the peleton back up to him.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2628870566_39b21d938e_o.jpg

Kroon is caught but LL Sanchez breaks away again. The Spaniard is very active so far this race.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3256/2628872456_bc20732dcf_o.jpg

The final climb and its a punishing 10%. A few riders are going for the KOM points and Soler gets ready to try to go with them.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3056/2628056027_c9e60d4589_o.jpg

Everyone's watching each other once over the hill and Soler takes the opportunity to try a sneaky escape. The pack are not that asleep though!
farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/2628876216_7f8ce61936_o.jpg

Its a sprint finish again and Freire, Zabel and McEwen are the strongest remaining. But no-one's as strong as Freire and he takes his consecutive stage wins and Rabobank have won all 3 stages now.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3190/2628864670_f5709dd0cf_o.jpg

Soler finished safely with the peleton.

The 4th of 8 stages and its the first real mountain test. Rabobank have been so dominant this year but to control the pack today will be a real challenge. There is a long downhill finish that would suit a great descender like Samuel Sanchez.

farm4.static.flickr.com/3276/2628096973_982b29e9ea_o.jpg

Calcagni gets in an early break but coming towards the first KOM point he's not strong enough to get the points.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3089/2628099151_c2fdc6e363_o.jpg

Rabobank and Euskatel control the peleton as the climbs loom into view.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3177/2628919540_dbb065003c_o.jpg

35km to go and the breakaway is being reeled in. LL Sanchez is yet again prominent in his KOM jersey.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2628103305_3d97300994_o.jpg

Barredo attacks towards the top of the climb and has a slight lead. Sanchez is fast after him and Voigt is trying to catch him too.
farm4.static.flickr.com/3145/2628107585_728a6fa871_o.jpg

They can't catch him though and Barredo takes the stage. Only Sanchez, Voigt, Chavanel and Casar could follow him and there is a gap back to the peleton. Have Rabobank lost the yellow jersey?
farm4.static.flickr.com/3054/2628109505_a954d46ec4_o.jpg

Its tight at the top of the GC rankings as Slyvain Chavanel leads Jens Voigt by a single second. Soler finished 31st today with the peleton and 48th overall @ 1' 15". Some improvement needed.
