Sastre will never win. Has he ever proved that he has the ablities? No.
He has indeed shown he has the abilities. In the 2006 Tour he was the strongest of all the favourites in the mountains and he was racing against Evans and Menchov etc. Last year he beat Evans in La Vuelta. And the amount of time trial kilometres in last year's Vuelta compared to these of this year's Tour isn't all that different. And Sastre isn't rubbish in time trials, he is a decent time trialist. He will lose time on the time trials I give you that, and so he needs to get it back in the mountains. But he has gotten rid off Evans and Menchov on numerous occassions during his career. So I can't see why not?
What I mean is: The guy never wins. I don't think he knows how to win - hell, it's even like he doesn't want to win. He's more than perfect for being a helper-kind-of-guy, but he isn't.
You can make all the comparisons you won. Sastre has beaten Menchov there, Evans here, Dada there, Lulu here, but when it all comes down to results, both Menchov and Evans have archieved way more than Sastre has. Add to that that Sastre is getting older and older, and that his closest rivals, Menchov and Evans, are both way better time triallists than him, and you have the result: No Tour-victory for Sastre.
As someone else said, I will eat my hat / shoe / whatever if Sastre wins the Tour. I just can't imagine it happen. |

You've a point there but anyway Marchante is a better TT than Cobo ..
But that being said Marchante has not made any significant results in TdF yet .. |

I`m excpecting an incredibly boring TdF where none of the favorits will bother to attack and just look at eatchother and attack with 2-3km to go on the mountain top finishes. That`s what cycling is devoloping into anyway...
Oh well, enough negativess:
I`d say it`s between Evans and Menchov. Evans will create a lot of time on the other favorites on the time trials and stay with the leading group in the mountains.
While Menchov is... well, he is Menchov, do I even need to say anything?
Valverde has peaked way way to early this year, and that together with his crappy recovery will make him completely fade away in the last week of the tour... just like last year... and I consider Cunego to be a top 10 candidate, but nothing more. People have to realise that these guys are classic riders and not stage racers...
This is probobly Sastres last chance to do anything in the tour. But it will be tough for him in the tt`s... With Bjarne Riis going a bit psycho on team tactics lately, both the Schleck brothers will probobly have to work completely for him to...
I think the big suprise of this year will be Euskaltel-Euskadi. They have a good, solid squad and aren`t afraid of taking risks.

I agree that his lack of winning is concerning - I have been very frustrated with this myself. Sastre doesn't have that winner instinct, at least we haven't seen it, before last year's Vuelt, where he for the first time ever showed some kind of determination. And I think that will carry on into this Tour de France as he has made some remarks during this season about being really confident this year. All I'm saying is that based on how the big favourites in this year's Tour has done in the mountains historically - there is a ver, very strong possibility that Sastre will get rid of everyone in the mountains if he manages to get into peak condition.

Evans is a wheelsucker, and you don't win by wheelsucking |

I actually have faith in that Valverde will do it this year. Everyone is talking about he has peaked too early, but maybe he hasn't? Actually, the only place he gained time on Evans in Dauphine was on the time trial
I think that tells us that he has improved his time trialling a lot, and he is strong enough in the mountains. Valverde is my favourite, Evans is a big challenger, and of course, I hope Moreau can surprise everyone and do a very well Tour de France 2008!
Anyway, I am looking forward to it

In the tour though the big TT'ers will be there. There wasn't many in the Dauphine. I don't think you can rate valverde until the tour. There's still a few weeks to go yet.

Well if you are good at wheelsucking (and Evans is really good at it) and you take time on you competitors in the TT then you'll win TdF |

Oh yes Evans is a wheelsucker - particularly yesterday when he attacked away from the Valverde group for a while - he was so taking advantage of the slipstream of the air infront of him [/sarcasm]
He's more aggressive than you make out CT

I think Leipheimer in peak condition is a OK time trialer, and Evans is good, anyway, "he is not in form." But of course you have a point, there is still some weeks to go, and I think Sastre will improve a lot on those weeks. I sat money on him; to round off the podium |
