Konica Minolta: "African cycling taking over the world."

Circuit Cycliste de la Sarthe (9-13 april)

For the Tour de Georgia I again wanted David George as our team leader. He road this flat stage race as preparation. Also Pieter Seyffert was here to prepare voor Georgia. Both came very close to another win.

Tour de Georgia (16-22 April)

This probably will already be David his last peak of the season. We aspect a top 10 finish from him. Our sprinter here is Pieter, he is still young and we'll see how he does in this HC race.

David George (Team leader)
Jay Thompson & Dan Craven (are here to support David and see how far they get themself)
Pieter Seyffert (Our main sprinter for this race)
Herman Fouché & Hassan Ben Nasser (They will support Pieter in the sprint)
Abdelbasser Hannachi & Abdelkader Belmokhtar (Teamhelpers and try to get in the breakaway)

STAGE 1
Stage 1 was flat, but long (210 km). This was the first of 3 possible mass sprints. We hoped Pieter could get a top 10 result. As it turned out Pieter was in great form and to our surprise he sprinted to our 4th stage victory of the season, picking up all possible jerseys with it (no KOM points this stage).

STAGE 2
Again an almost flat stage (187 km). Because we had the race leader and one of the sprint favorites in our team, the riders worked hard to pull back the breakaway to keep the jersey for another day. Pieter rewarded the team by again sprinting to victory. Two for two, what a start!

STAGE 4
This was the first of two stage that would be decisive for the GC. A time trail. Could David grab the leaders jersey? No he lost 54 seconds!?! But the winner was the Z-man, who beat everyone by more then a minute, beside Luke Roberts, our own David and Brian Vanborg. David had no reason to be ashamed.

STAGE 5
Perhaps David could win back time on Zabriskie in this tough mountain stage?
David tried everything, but couldn't drop him. Besides Zabriskie 6 other riders hanged on and finished in the same time as David. 1 rider was to strong for everybody. Koldo Gil grabbed his 2nd stage win and the overall lead.

STAGE 6
Stage 6 was to difficult for Pieter, but wasn't difficult enough to change the top of the GC. David finished in the top 10. He secured his 3th place overall with only a flat 126 km stage in the program for tomorrow.

The last two goals before we sent the team on a well deserved summer vacation are:
Lancaster Classics (3 june)
Philadelphia Intl. Championship (10 june)

Before we started our preparation for those races we had a German one day race to finish off the month April. Chris got a top 10 spot.

May 2007
Our preparation started off with two France stage races.

Tour de Picardie (17-20 May)
i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/snoep_de_hond/logos/RaceTourdePicardie.png

This is a stage race for the sprinters. It consisted out of 4 more or less flat stages, which all result in a mass sprint. We sent our 2 best sprinters, who were not in great shape jet, but did gather up some points.

STAGE 1
10th Juan Van Heerden TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.

This race we got some varying results. Stage 1 & 2 resulted in a mass sprint. All of our sprinters managed a top 5 place. But the team screwed up a high GC spot in the 3th and 4th stage which were hilly stages.

2nd Juan Van Heerden TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.

But we had a strong finish. Rafaâ again got in the break away to defend his KOM jersey. They seemed the get a big enough lead to fight for the win. But the pack got closer and closer. Rafaâ left his break away companions behind and managed to keep a 21 second gap and take home the win.

This flat race was first on the agenda. We wanted a top 10 finish. Juan was our race leader. He was in good shape and was eager for a win. He hadn't won jet this season and his sprint buddies Pieter (Seyffert), Daryl (Impey) and Rodney (Green) all picked up a win. So he was getting a bit frustrated.
We tried to get someone in the break away, but nobody was allowed to go until half race. Off course at that time our riders had given up. Luckily other teams helped out to bring everything back together for a mass sprint.
Juan wasn't very lucky, picked the wrong wheel and 'only' managed to get 6th. Goal achieved, but we (Juan included) had hoped for more.

For the second one Hassan and Chris (Froome) had joined the team. They arrived later, because they road the Bayern-Rundfahrt.
Christoff Van Heerden got in the break away, which got a lot of room from the bunch, but in the last round some riders tried to jump away from the bunch to reach the breakaway. Hassan anticipated.
The last few kilometers everything became a bit chaotic. Christoff had to settle for 3th, being beaten by two 'fresh' riders who managed the jump, and Hassen came just to late to reach the front settling for 5th.
As you can see from the results everything was very close, because no time gaps where giving by the organization.

Hassan attacked at the second to last climb. He ended up with Ytting Bak. Together they distant the rest. In the last kilometers Hassan was much stronger and could drop Ytting Bak to solo to the win!! Chris and Juan also jumped away from the pack and both finished in top 5.

Vacation
To round up the first half of our season together with the team management we planned a nice surprise for the riders

We had got an invitation to the HC race Veenendaal-Veenendaal in the Netherlands. We wanted to take the whole team to the Netherlands to ride/watch the race after which we planned a 10 days relaxing vacation in Luxembourg for all the riders paid by the team.

Hassan had showed great form in America, so he was our race leader again.
Early on it became clear the majority of the teams wanted a mass sprint, so the team did everything to make sure Hassan had to do as little as possible and drop him off in front for the sprint. Was it the his teammates cheering for him at the finish, the prospect of a period of relaxation or the confidence after his great win in America? What ever it was, with the finish in sight he sprinted to the lead, which he wouldn't let go. It's Hassan again!!

July 2007
After last months great results this are the rankings in the continental circuit:
i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/snoep_de_hond/Rankings20077.png
Unexpected third place, but as you can see a long way behind the first two and the planning is to take a break from racing until the end of august. So we'll see what position we are at that time. But a place in top 20 looks to be secured and even a top 10 place looks within reach.

With some great results, especially in our key races, the confidence of our sponsors was excellent. They already confirmed they would be head sponsor of our team for at least an other year.

i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/snoep_de_hond/Goals20072.png

Our mostly young riders learned a lot and have shown great progress. We hope we can get a wild card for the Eneco tour (22-29 August) or the Tour de Pologne (9-15 September) to let some of our riders gain experience in a ProTour race. And of course there is one more race on the agenda where we want preform at our best;
Herald Sun Tour (7-13 October)

Nice, but what about some ingame pics?

As I told in the first post, screen shots will come when I start telling about the second season. I played the first season before I decided to tell this story, so I didn't make any screen shots during the first season.

I want to tell about the first season, because it think it's fun to see how it started off and how the team develops. I'm trying to tell it as interesting as I can make it without screen shots.

So hold on! Screen shots will come.

P.S. Thanks people for the positive reactions.

Transfers

July and the first part of August we didn't have any races, but it was a very busy period. We had scouted around Africa for young riders and in this period tried to sign a couple of them for next year. We were a bit disappointed to see 1 or 2 talented African riders sign with other teams, but we managed to sign 10 young riders making next year sqaud a total of 28. I'll show or new riders a the start of the season.

10 may seem a lot, but next season we want to try out a lot of young riders to see who has talent. This gives our top riders to opportunity to focus on a few key races and hopefully ride 1 or 2 ProTour races.

Also non of our signings will earn more then 2000 euro/month, so the total wage budget will not increase that much.
Actually we have money and place left to sign 2 more riders at the end of the season. We had two riders in mind, who we already talked with:

i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/snoep_de_hond/Riders2007transfer.png

John-Lee Augustyn: He is one of South Africa's biggest talents and was bought away from our team last year by Barloworld. Barloworld is probably not that willing to let him go, but we'll see what we can negotiate. John doesn't necessarily wants to leave Barloworld, but said he is personally certainly willing to talk to us and is enthusiastic about what we have done with the team.

Erik Hoffman: Erik is 'already' 26, but we see in him someone who can become a good helper and mentor for our young riders. Besides that he is an all round rider, who certainly can deliver us some results. Erik was also very enthusiastic and is willing to sign with us if we can work it out with his team.

August 2007

In august we began working to get in shape for the last two months of the season.
We picked out a nice race to start racing again.

Tour de Slovaquie (28 august - 2 September)
i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk310/snoep_de_hond/logos/RaceTourdeSlovaquie.png
Only some of the smaller continental teams participated in this race, so we hoped we wouldn't do that bad here.

Our only Sprinter was Rodney (Green) and we had two man would try to finish in the top of the GC classifications: David (George) and Dan (Craven).

STAGES 1-3
The first three stages where flat or not selective enough, but Rodney couldn't get in to the top 10.

STAGE 4
Stage 4 was a time trail and we were curious how David and Dan had come out of the rest period. Time after time we get surprised at what our riders are capable of. David won the TT with Dan taking 3th.
Ok, the field isn't that strong, but David and Dan haven't raced for more then two months!

1st David George TEAM KONICA MINOLTA 06'50"
2nd Frantisek Kloucek PSK WHIRLPOOL HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ +05"
3rd Dan Craven TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
4th Mads Christensen TEAM DESIGNA KOKKEN s.t.
5th Bart Boom TEAM LÖWIK MEUBELEN +08"

STAGE 5
Stage 5 was a short (61 km) tricky hilly stage. David and Dan nicely finished close to the winner and consolidated there top GC places.

1st Martin Mortensen TEAM DESIGNA KOKKEN 1h36'27"
2nd Luis Orán Castañeda COLOMBIA ES PASIÓN - COLDEPORTES +10"
3rd David George TEAM KONICA MINOLTA +22"
4th Dan Craven TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.

5th Lucas Persson UNIBET.COM CONTINENTAL s.t.

STAGE 6
Stage 6 was again not selective enough to change the GC, so we took home 3th and 4th place. A great start of or second part of the season.
