Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 5 - UWT

i.imgur.com/07tsb00.jpg

McLaren Vale - Wilunga Hill 151.2kms

Here we are, the queen stage of the tour. Old Wilunga Hill is iconic and it's steep incline will decide our TDU champion. Chaves is looking to step up the podium from 2nd to 1st with a win here today. If I can stick around I'll try defend my spot in the top-5 of the young rider's classification but that's only if Esteban doesn't need my help.

Race Report

As always a small group got away early on. Manuele Boaro, Tobias Ludvigsson & Alexis Gougeard were the strongest riders in there, but after yesterday's breakaway the peloton wasn't gonna let it grow too far.

A 6-man group enjoying the views of the bay

After a long ride up front, the tired break hit the bottom of the climb, and with the peloton breathing down their neck, the stronger riders tried to distance themselves from the stragglers.

The break hits Wilunga Hill

As the pack hit the first ascension of the climb, they swallowed up the struggling breakaway. Quickstep for Alaphilippe and Orica for Chaves were pushing hard at the front.

Edmondson led Howson and then Chaves for Orica

As Alex Edmondson emptied the tank on the build up to the climb, he fell back while Damien Howson led out their main man Chaves. This fast tempo seperated the front group and Chaves' small gap forced responses from Alaphillipe & Alejandro Valverde.

The fast pace of Orica brought the cream to the top

Esteban Chaves kept riding his own pace, as Alaphilippe and Kwiatkowski tried to follow, but another attack from Valverde was hard to match.

The explosive Alejandro Valverde starts to create a gap

Valverde's pure speed was too much for the rest, and he won the stage with relative ease! Butt how big would the gap be? Enough for the lead?

Another great win for Valverde

Chaves comes in second, 12" after Valverde, with Alaphilippe on his tail. Kwiatkowski follows a few moments later but no gaps are recorded. Valverde takes the overall lead!

Wilunga Hill again proved a great spectacle

A little dissapointing that Esteban couldn't get the win today, or gain any time on Kwiatkowski, but it was still a great performance against some very strong competition. As for me I was forced to empty the tank before the final climb to put Esteban and Damien in position, and was very happy to play my role, even though I lost a lot of time.

We've got one more chance for a stage tomorrow on the flat circuit through Adelaide, then a hard earned week off.

Until tomorrow,
Alex

@VoetsT Yeah, Chaves has great acceleration but he couldn't come near Valverde's pace.

Adelaide - Adelaide 81.2kms

Here we are, the final stage of the TDU. The classifications are all sorted except for points, and if the dominoes fall correctly for us today, Caleb will be wearing it at the end of the day! The course is flat as a pancake, and a stage for the sprinters. However, we're scared of the breakaway, so the director told me to try jump in the break incase of a miracle. No complaints from me, I'll get to just hang onto the back of the group and wait to be dragged back. With Bewley, Kluge and Docker, Caleb will have good support for the sprint without me.

Race Report

A bit of a scare early on for Movistar as race leader Alejandro Valverde clips wheels with a couple riders and has a fall. But his team came back to surround him and they brought their leader back to the group with ease.

i.imgur.com/BPoy8Bi.jpg
Nothing will stop Alejandro Valverde from taking the ochre jersey to the finish today

A big break gets out in front today, with some familiar faces. Marco Marcato, Miles Scotson, Alexey Lutsenko & Alex Edmondson are all present here, as they have been all week.

i.imgur.com/4VErlyV.jpg
A few familiar faces up front

The break got out to a 3 minute lead, and stayed there. Despite a strong chase from the pack, they held onto their lead very well! And no thanks to Alex Edmondson from Orica, who, in aid of Caleb Ewan, has been sitting on the back wheel all day.

The chase was hard, and with 10km left, the trains of the sprinting teams began to form. But the group ahead were doing very well, and were fighting hard. The line was in sight!

i.imgur.com/qeYBvMh.jpg
The spectators were seeing some exceptional speeds through the streets today

And somehow, against all the odds, the breakaway wins again! Astana's Alexey Lutsenko was the fastest by far. Alex Edmondson was caught off guard and started his kick too late, as he finished in the middle of the break. A terrible result for Orica!

i.imgur.com/alAiVeu.jpg
A great win for Lutsenko to cap off an action-packed tour

Mark Cavendish, whose had a quiet tour thus far, leads the peloton over the line in 14th place, followed by Greipel, Sagan and Ewan.

A slightly bittersweet feeling to end the tour today. Sure I was in a surviving break, but that was never the plan. And when it came to the finish I messed up, and didn't time my sprint well at all. I guess that's what lack of experience gets you. We missed our last chance for a stage win which was one of our season goals, however Chaves took 2nd place which ticks off 1 of our goals of the season, and his effort was amazing this week.

So we leave with some positives and some negatives after what was a very entertaining race overall. I've got a couple more races down here before I head to Belgium for the start of the classics season.

I'll see you on the Great Ocean Road!

Geelong - Geelong 175.5kms

Today we're in Geelong for the 3rd edition of Australia's newest UCI WorldTour race, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. It's a long circuit starting in Geelong, heading down the picturesque Great Ocean Road, and then comes back through some steep but short hills to the finish line back in Geelong. It's a tough race, that wouldn't usually suit an out and out sprinter, but with Caleb in such great nick, and with a strong team around him, we think we can guide him to the finish line and get him a spot in the sprint finish.

To be honest, it isn't the strongest startlist here today. Check it out below. If we make it to a full sprint finish, our main competition will be Edward Theuns (Trek - Segafredo), Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport), Leigh Howard (Aqua Blue Sport), Oscar Gatto (Astana) & Daniel Oss (BMC). We can't discount veterans like J.J. Rojas (Movistar) or Borut Bozic (Bahrain-Merida) either. As for attackers, anyone could win if the timing is right. For example, Frenchmen Sylvain Chavanel & Lilian Calmejane of Direct Energie could cause some trouble if they work together on those final inclines. We'll have to wait and see.

Matt Hayman and Luke Durbridge make their season debuts here today, and it'll be great to have their experience guiding us to the finish line. I understand my role here today, it's only a one day race, and a win for Caleb is the top priority.

Race Report

The race kicked off in Geelong, and soon after, the inevitable break of the day formed. It was a 6-man group, and contained notably Mads Würtz Schmidt (Katusha - Alpecin), Frederik Frison (Lotto-Soudal) and young Australian Robert Power (Orica-Scott).

i.imgur.com/rvn21zk.jpg
The break enjoy some beautiful scenery before they hit the pointy end of the race

The peloton weren't going to let an early breakaway win today, and the riders up front were attacking each other hard to try and speed up as their gap was shortening. They were all surviving, but for Robert Power, who couldn't keep up, and was dropped after some tough hills. He was given the all-clear to wait up for the peloton and use his remaining energy on the chase for teammate Caleb Ewan.

i.imgur.com/GMqGkPk.jpg
A bright future ahead, but not today for Robert Power

The breakaway was in shambles as riders dropped one by one, with a hard-chasing Orica leading the charge. They would all be caught soon and the slightly diminished peloton would face the final hills. Michael Hepburn and Alex Edmondson were pushing a hard pace, but teammate and pre-race favourite Caleb Ewan was looking very comfortable near the front of the peloton. All the favourites were sticking around, for now.

i.imgur.com/D9PSECc.jpg
The peloton was having nothing of the breakaway

The short hills were very steep, with a few riders dropping back but it wasn't enough to split the peloton heavily, and despite some attacks from TDU stage winners Miles Scotson and Alexey Lutsenko, the group came down to the final few kilometres just about all together.

i.imgur.com/Fdhxmob.jpg
The sharp hills of Geelong weren't enough to lose the pure sprinters

The sprint was on! The Orica lead out train was firing, with Mitch Docker putting Caleb Ewan in a perfect spot. Edward Theuns jumped first, with J.J Rojas sitting on Ewan's wheel. Who would win in Geelong?

i.imgur.com/dOpMHNF.jpg
The fast men were off!

It's Ewan and Theuns, Theuns, Ewan, Theuns... and Ewan takes it by a whisker! He pumps his fists as he grabs the win over a very strong Theuns. Those two were by far the strongest, with Rojas coming in third. A perfect day for Orica, whose train was looking very impressive.

i.imgur.com/GFqPNds.jpg
A great home win for the young sprinter!

Slightly belated but yes! A win! It feels great to get a teammate the victory, especially on home turf. I really worked my ass off today and it showed with my final position, but to get repaid with a win for the team is awesome.

The Herald Sun Tour starts in a few days, where I'll have a slightly more free role I think. It starts with a prologue which is my bread and butter so I'm excited for that.

Until then,
Alex

Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Prologue - 2.1

Melbourne - Melbourne 8km

The Jayco Herald Sun starts today in beautiful Melbourne! We're in the heart of the city, riding along the Yarra River. A great starting point to what is Australia's oldest bike race. This tour features 4 stages, as well as today's prologue. Stage 1 is mostly flat but a short climb near the finish line could lead to some gaps. Stage 2 is pan flat and is one of two stages dedicated to the sprinters, along with stage 3, despite an uphill finish. The final stage will see us climb up Arthur's Seat, and whoever conquers that climb will most likely win the entire race.

As I've said though, today is the prologue, a short 8km course with a small hill near the middle (you can't see it in the profile, but it's there) which will make it an interesting route. I love a prologue as I can give it my all without worrying too much about preserving my energy, so I'm looking to finish not too far from the top.

We've brought a team without a single dedicated leader. Damien Howson and Jack Haig are two great climbers who have performed well here before, and both will ride for themselves. I'm here as a teammate, but I've been given the green light to try get into a breakaway on stage 2 or 4, so that's something to look forward to.

It'll be a great tour, let's get into it!

Race Report

One of the first riders off the block was Damien Howson, who has a good chance for the overall, so he'll hope to do well here today. A skilled time-triallist, He set the fastest time yet, 2" ahead of Haimar Zubeldia, but by the end of the day he would be down to 12th. A solid start for Orica's co-leader.

i.imgur.com/sBQkk0Y.jpg
Damien Howson is a rider to look out for later in the tour

BMC have brought a strong team here, with Rohan Dennis to start later in the day, and Stefan Küng is another good chance for the win today. However he's not in great shape and finishes 3" after Howson, finishing the day in 23rd place.

i.imgur.com/DIhtMh8.jpg
He's a prologue specialist, but Küng couldn't perform today

Maxime Monfort is a very talented rider, and he's another one with a great chance to take the overall victory. He's clearly in good nick too, taking the new best time of 9'56. That'll be tough to beat!

i.imgur.com/iptqBhr.jpg
The former Belgian TT national champ is here to win!

The other leader for Orica, Jack Haig, is out on the road now. He's not known for his time-trialling, but only loses 7" on teammate Howson. He finishes in 28th.

i.imgur.com/w3CaPFa.jpg
Haig vs Howson will be an interesting in-battle!

Simon Geschke is here to lead Sunweb, and does very well to start off! Beats Monfort's time by 3" and is the new leader! But with hot favourite Rohan Dennis yet to start, can he hold on to the leader's jersey?

i.imgur.com/Eyg4JRy.jpg
A quick start for Simon Geschke

With Luke Durbrdige & Michael Hepburn putting in poor performances, Alex Edmondson is Orica's last chance for a top-10 finish. And he does just that! He comes in 9" behind Geschke, enough for 4th place so far! With not many riders left, he could definitely hold on to a top-5.

i.imgur.com/Yren32K.jpg
A terrific ride by Alex Edmondson

One of the last riders on the road is Australian champ Rohan Dennis, one of the world's best time-triallists. He coasts to a victory here, 8" ahead of Geschke! He will wear the leader's jersey tomorrow.

What a result! I felt really good out there and to finish top-5 is awesome, there was no touching Rohan though, he is just unstoppable sometimes. Damien & Jack put in good performances too so altogether a very successful day. Tomorrow will be an interesting stage and I can't wait to see what happens.

Thanks for reading guys, see you tomorrow!

Until then,
Alex

tsmoha
Great result for Edmo! Now help Haig to get a result for the GC. Maybe a few stages also suit Alex.

VoetsT
Maybe you can go for the youth classification

Teddy The Creator
@tsmoha Yeah, great to see Edmo's name up near the top. Haig & Howson have a real good shot at the overall I think.

@VoetsT It'll be tough, but to maybe wear it for a couple of stages before the final deciding stage would be cool.

Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Stage 1 - 2.1

i.imgur.com/70HAaMY.jpg

Mt. Macedon - Bendigo 130.4kms

Today's stage is considered flat, but with that short uncategorised climb just 7kms from the finish, anything could happen. We haven't brought a dedicated sprinter with us, so we're gonna relax and just make sure we don't lose any time today, and if we have either myself or Matt Hayman in good position at the finish we might have a go. I was the rider we originally planned to send into breakaways but due to my high GC ranking, BMC won't let me leave their sight I'm sure. We've given the duty to Robert Power who will try join the front group for the day.

Race Report

On today's flat stage, a large break formed up front, looking to make a race of it. The strongest riders in there were climbers Daniel Jaramillo (United Healthcare) & Matthew Brammeier (Aqua Blue Sport), as well as US champion Gregory Daniel (Trek - Segafredo) & young Orica puncheur Robert Power.

i.imgur.com/uwtsHqt.jpg
The 13-man group out in front.

The break soon reached a lead of about 6-minutes, and with a few good sprinters and the yellow leader's jersey, BMC took up the task. It was a good day to relax in the peloton as the beautiful Victorian mountain ranges passed by the riders.

i.imgur.com/8DeaRMY.jpg
A stunning landscape in country Victoria

The break's lead was being cut quickly, and was down to around 2 minutes with 30kms left. Sensing their time was almost up, Jaramillo, Brammerier & Dimension Data's Ben O'Connor set off in front, and the rest of the break could only watch.

i.imgur.com/IfvHYic.jpg
Will these 3 get away?

With the 3 attackers making a gap on the rest of the break, and the peloton getting closer every kilometre, Robert Power pushed on ahead to try and catch up to the front three, attacking at the base of the final hill. Brammeier up ahead sensed Power catching up so attacked himself, and soon was all alone on the final climb, with the peloton breathing down his neck.

i.imgur.com/TcU9JiG.jpg
A nice try from Power but no dice

The peloton got over the final climb without any major casualties, but it ruined any chance of a typical sprint train. Brammeier was still ahead by a small margin and was pushing to the line, but a chaotic peloton was still hard on his tail.

i.imgur.com/vQlCcMv.jpg
Over the hill and onto the finish line

And with 2kms left Brammeier is caught! So close but his tank was completely empty and he gives way to what's left of the sprinters! Simon Geschke was leading the pack, with several BMC riders near the front. Matt Hayman was Orica's only man with a chance and he kicked quite early. Who would take this wild finish?

i.imgur.com/1BhzcZ4.jpg
BMC in prime position for the sprint

And BMC take the 1-2! Jempy Drucker & Daniel Oss take the first two spots, with Rick Zabel in 3rd. Matt Hayman does very well to take 4th in what was a far from typical mass sprint.

BMC are dominating the Herald Sun Tour thus far

A tough stage! I was aiming to be part of the sprint finish but got caught up in a bad position during the final climb. I tried to make it back but I saw Matt up there so let him go for it, and he did very well! Tomorrow is a proper flat stage so we'll set up a train for me and I'll have a good go, and maybe steal some bonus seconds to get into 1st place in the youth classification.

See you tomorrow,
Alex

Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Stage 2 - 2.1

Bendigo - Nagambie 149.9kms

Super flat today, a stage definitely for sprinters. However it seems the sprinting stocks are a bit light here, so it really opens up for the part-timers like myself. I've been nominated as the #1 so it'll be fun to compete in that. Once again we're sending Robert Power into the break, and we'll let the other teams chase him down before the final sprint. Wish me luck!

Race Report

The break of the day was an 11-man group, once again featuring Robert Power. They would prove irrelevant in the end though, as the peloton had it's heart set on a sprint.

A day to just enjoy the scenery for the breakaway

With 15kms left the break was caught, and the peloton was altogether again. BMC and Katusha, for Drucker and Zabel respectively, were pacing at the front, as the trains would soon form. Orica and Aqua Blue were also looking strong.

The peloton within reaching distance of the break

7kms until the line, and Orica's train was looking very strong. They seem to have elected Alex Edmondson as their man for today, curious to see how he goes in a bunch sprint.

Luke Durbridge leading an ominous Orica train

Into the final straight, and they were off! Edmondson was in a great spot, as was veteran Greg Henderson. Zabel was being blocked on the side! Who's gonna take it?

i.imgur.com/YSysRUW.jpg
Zabel looking in trouble on the far right

And Leigh Howard takes it! Out of nowhere on the far left, he surges past Niklas Arndt & Greg Henderson, who were very close. And the suprise is Alex Edmondson, who comes in 5th. Not a dedicated sprinter, he's showing he's got great speed when he needs. He could've won today if he kicked a little earlier I think.

Another top-5! I love it! Feels great to see my name up there, a little annoyed I didn't time my sprint a little better, I felt I had some really good speed. I can't wait for tomorrow, a slight uphill finish, it could be my day!

On to tomorrow!
Thanks for reading everyone,
Alex

Alex is going pretty well at the moment Wink

VoetsT
Very strong showing for a not-sprinter!

@VoetsT & sutty68 Thanks guys, yeah it was a decent performance from Alex! I think I'll have to try for some more sprint finishes when he faces lesser competition like he has here.

Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Stage 3 - 2.1

i.imgur.com/m8r9g87.jpg

Mitchelton Wines - Nagambie 176.0kms

Another flat stage today, but with a little kick uphill for the finish, could be interesting. I doubt it'll be enough to put the pure sprinters out of it but it's one more factor to consider. My last chance to grab a stage win before the pain tomorrow. Really hoping I can pull the rabbit out the hat. I have to admit, I'm not feeling 100% today, but I'm gonna give it my all.

Race Report

The break of the day once again contained the young man Robert Power, but no one could stop the peloton from chasing them down. They were out front for about 130kms before they were brought back.

Another day to enjoy the sights for the break

With 15kms left, the trains started to form. Once again, Orica-Scott and Katusha-Alpecin were at the forefront, with BMC sitting pretty in the middle.

i.imgur.com/OkjqH5k.jpg
Bewley, Durbridge then Hayman leading out Alex Edmondson

It seems Orica mistimed their train slightly, as Matt Hayman ran out of legs a little too soon for Edmondson, forcing him to start his sprint early. As a result he was passed by BMC's Oss & Drucker, with Zabel sitting pretty on their wheel.

i.imgur.com/LqVSgYf.jpg
Too soon for Orica?

And Zabel absolutely smashes the field! He wins by about 5 lengths over Drucker, as Edmondson falls away and is passed by several riders. Alexey Tsatevich for Gazprom closes out the podium.

A dominant win for Rick Zabel

Well, what can I say.. a dissapointing day. I was feeling a little off today, and we mistimed our train a little bit, so as a result it didn't work out. But it's no disaster! We didn't come here to sprint, we came here for GC, and we've still got tomorrow to look forward to.

See you on Arthur's Seat!

Cheers,
Alex

Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Stage 4 - 2.1

Arthurs Seat - Arthurs Seat 193.8kms

Well today is the final stage, and what will be the decider for the final GC. It's the longest stage of the tour, and the toughest by far. It's up and down all day, and it'll be a battle just to survive until the final climb. Then we hit Arthur's Seat, a very steep 3km climb, that will create some gaps for sure.

Jack Haig hasn't been at full fitness this week, and with Damien sitting above him in the GC and feeling super fit, we've made him our number 1 for the day. Although I'm highest in the GC, I'll be working for Damien. But if I can somehow stick around in the top-10, that would be a great final result. As for Damien, we're looking to make it into the top-5.

There's some stiff competition here, mainly in the shape of strong puncheurs who can climb well also. Dylan Teuns (BMC), Jan Bakelants (AG2R) & Simon Geschke (SunWeb) are the favourites today, but Rohan Dennis is leading the race, and if he can stick around, is a great chance to hold onto his leader's jersey.

Race Report

The break of the day formed, with the intention of winning the King of the Mountains classification. Daniel Teklahaimanot looked very strong, grabbing 14 points on the day. However, Daniel Jaramillo snuck 8 points onto his total, putting him at equal points with Teklahaimanot, and stealing the overall crown due to having covered more categorised climbs.

Teklahaimanot was the strongest today, but couldn't take the crown

The route was very challenging today, constantly climbing or descending. SunWeb and BMC were at the front of the peloton, pacing the ever depleting group over the hills. They chased the break down, and as they approached the final climb to Arthur's Seat, the race was on for the overall victory.

Not an easy day for the riders

As the group reached the base of the climb, the teams prepared for their leaders to attack. Orica had strong numbers around Damien Howson & Alexander Edmondson, while the yellow jersey of Rohan Dennis was caught up a little behind.

Orica supporting their leaders well at the front

And just as they hit, the first riders shoot of the front! Geschke, Teuns & Bakelants are joined by Groschartner from CCC & veteran Damiano Cunego of Nippo. Soon they had a gap and would sprint it out! Dennis was just behind, followed by Monfort & Howson.

A strong front 5, battling it out for the win

And Simon Geschke takes it! He's been everywhere this tour, in the prologue, and on the flat stages. And now he's taken the queen stage! A dominant performance! He creates a 13" gap on Dennis, which with the included time bonus puts him ahead for the overall victory.

A decisive victory for Geschke

Edmondson & Howson finish with the same time as Dennis, putting them at 7th & 9th places respectively on the overall. They couldn't quite keep up with the favourites, but very respectable, especially from young Edmondson.

Well, we couldn't quite make the inroads we wanted today, as those front 4 were simply too strong. Geschke was really dominant all tour, and deserved his win. It felt great to be able to stick around with Damien and Jack up that final climb, and to finish top-10 and as the best Orica rider is pretty sweet!

It's been a tiring first few weeks, and I've got some time off now until the classics season starts in Belgium. I'll fill you in on what's happened in between races, and who the best performers have been in these early months of the season.

Thanks for reading,
Alex

Race Recap - February 2017

Hey everybody,
I'm writing to you from Belgium, as I'm back on the bike competitively tomorrow after nearly a month off. The cobbles season starts tomorrow, as always, at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and I'm very much looking forward to it. But since it's been so long, I thought I'd update you guys on what's been happening since I last updated you, with a couple highlights from the season so far..

12.02 - Trofeo Laigueglia - 1.HC

i.imgur.com/rPaeu7v.jpg

Laigueglia - Laigueglia 195.0kms

We came into this race with a double-pronged attack of Roman Kreuziger & Carlos Verona, and they worked together perfectly here for one of the first one-day classics in Italy for the season. An attack from Kreuziger on the top of the final major climb shed the peloton from the sprinters who were hoping to survive until the end. He was followed by a select group, and as they started to head uphill again a few kms before the finish line, Verona attacked and held onto his lead downhill all the way to the line for our second win of the year.

17.02 - Tour of Oman - Stage 4 - 2.HC

Samail - Jabal Al Akhdhar 138.9kms

The queen stage of the Tour of Oman was decisive as usual, and Esteban Chaves shone there for Orica. As the climb began, he took the race into his own hands with a vicious attack. He dropped the likes of Chris Froome, Roman Bardet & Nairo Quintana, as only Vinceno Nibali could follow. They fought it out to the top, as Nibali won by a inch on the line, putting 45" on all of their major opponents. Although he didn't get the overall victory, it was a great sign of Esteban's climbing legs, with the Tirreno - Adriatico and Ardennes classics approaching fast.

Not an outstanding 2 months for the team but some great individual performances! We'll look to continue that as the Belgian classics begin, and I'll do everything I can to try get some good results. Now back to the hotel sauna!

See you tomorrow,
Alex

The Sun Tour didn't end as expected, but very nice results in Trofeo Laigueglia and Oman.

Gent - Gent 198.3kms

Here we are, the opening day of the Belgian classics season! This is the race's first year as a UCI World Tour event, and it's gonna be a very tough race. We've come here to win, but we know we don't have the true superstars like Boonen or Sagan, so we're just gonna do our very best. Instead of taking a pragmatic approach with three co-leaders, we've decided to give the dedicated leader role to Jens Keukeleire, whose sprint will come in handy come a group finish. Matt Hayman and Luke Durbridge will be his super domestiques, using their prowess on the cobbles to try and lose some of his contenders. My role will once again be as a teammate, and I've been entrusted with doing everything I can to protect our leader Jens Keukeleire as long as I can.

The hot favourite here today is local hero Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), as well as Alexander Kristoff (Katusha - Alpecin) & John Degenkolb (Trek - Segafredo). Quick-Step have also brought a super strong classics team, led by Tom Boonen & Phillipe Gilbert. As well as all these names, there are countless cobble specialists here who could make the difference come the last few kilometres. One big omission however, is world champ and Tour of Flanders winner Peter Sagan, who has decided not to take part today.

Let's see how we go!

Race Report

A small group got out in front early on today, containing 7 riders. Notable names were Mark Renshaw (Dimension Data), Yukiya Arashiro (Bahrain - Merida), Roger Kluge (Orica - Scott) & Mathias Frank (AG2R). As they hit the first cobbled section of the day, they led by 4'00" over the peloton. However the chase would soon start, and they would be reeled back in not long after.

A sunny yet cool day here in Flanders

Quick-Step have brought a very strong squad here, and as a result took control of the peloton. Katusha, BMC & Trek were all pushing at the front also. The break was soon caught, and a very diminished peloton head into the final 20kms. Orica were also looking strong too, with 5 riders still in the main group.

i.imgur.com/UTojzfm.jpg
Riders falling off the back one-by-one

And the first attack comes from Van Avermaet! He's tailed by Jasper Stuyven! Luke Durbridge hops on the front of the peloton to catch him and the pace really rips the pack apart, it's now down to just the favourites! Orica still have Durbridge, Hayman & Keukeleire, with Alex Edmondson & Mitch Docker falling off the back after terrific efforts to stick around this far.

i.imgur.com/UvLSTWW.jpg
Van Avermaet's attack seperates the men from the boys

The front pack is tired now after nearly 175kms riding on tough terrain, and with Van Avermaet back in the group, Luke Durbridge & Paris-Roubaix champion Matt Hayman hop on the front to push a blistering pace. Their teammate Jasper Keukeleire is looking very comfortable behind them, as they head towards the final sprint.

i.imgur.com/R0RutHO.jpg
Great teamwork from Orica

Durbridge is done, and it's Hayman now, leading Keukeleire to the line. Degenkolb hops on his wheel as the remaining riders simply try to keep up!

i.imgur.com/Z6Ay7DA.jpg
The group struggling to keep up with Orica at the front

Hayman is done, and the final sprint is on! It's Keukeleire in perfect position, with only Degenkolb & Alexander Kristoff to his left. Van Avermaet & Boonen are nowhere to be seen! Which one of these 3 would take the win?

i.imgur.com/SoBVh3i.jpg
The line is in sight

And it's Kristoff! He just beats Degenkolb, as both were far too fast for Keukeleire, despite a perfect lead out. Perfect timing from the Norwegian!

What a result! I think we had the perfect race today, setting up Keukeleire for the finish.. We dropped Van Avermaet, Boonen, Greipel, EBH.. but Degenkolb & Kristoff were too strong. Still, an amazing result and a terrific start to the classics season. I worked super hard all day protecting Jens, and it paid off, which is an awesome feeling.

Tomorrow we have Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne, another chance for Jens or maybe even a lucky attacker Wink

Until then,
Alex
