Tour Down Under - Stage 1

In a change from last year, the Tour Down Under has been made a part of the Pro-Tour. Primarily a sprinters race, the TDU has one stage with a significant late hill that will likely determine the champion. The winner of the race will probably be the best sprinter who can get over the hill with the lead group and not lose time.

Ciolek... well he's just not built for the hills. So High Road newcomer Edvald Boasson Hagen will lead the team in this race. A solid sprinter with good climbing legs, Boasson Hagen would be a threat to win if he were in form. Unfortunately... he's not.

We're hoping Ciolek can earn us some points with good places in the flat stages, and Boasson Hagen can ride well enough to finish in the top 10 overall. We'll see how it develops.

Team Leader: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Sprinter: Gerald Ciolek
Leadout/teammate: Marcel Sieberg
Free Rider - Sprint: Andre Griepel (not in very good form)
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Servais Knaven
Teammate: Bert Grabsch
Teammate/Mountain Classification: Morris Possoni

Stage 1

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-1pro.jpg

The early hill will determine who wears the mountain jersey tomorrow, so High Road will send someone to make a stab at it. The rest of the stage is relatively flat, so we'll likely have a sprint finish.

Possoni was part of the early attack and pushed up the hill... but just didn't have enough time to grap first. He needed a few more meters to pass Dimitri Muravyev of Astana. The break was caught with about 20 km to go and soon the sprint trains formed.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-1a.jpg

A primary train formed, and Team High Road was set up well... holding the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th positions in the train. As the sprint began Griepel obviously wasn't able to keep pace so he slid out and Ciolek moved behind Goss... he looked to be in great position.

But then Simon Gerrans shot up along side the train. Ciolek saw them coming and began his sprint past Goss hoping to keep the lead....

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-1b.jpg

But he couldn't pass Goss, let alone keep ahead of Gerrans. Not only that, Markus Zberg who had been following Ciolek was able to pass him as well, keeping Team High Road out of the Pro Tour points.

The good news is Boasson Hagen was able to hold on for 5th place despite his poor form.

Where is Fedrigo??? Can't see him. Was he riding on the right side of the road?

SportingNonsense
Looks like Kurtin posted the GC, not the stage results. Fedrigo must have taken a time bonus at one of the sprints

You guys are right. I was looking at the results and figured I cut Fredrigo out somewhere. I was also asking myself "How the heck did HE pass me?"

Fixed the entry.

Tour Down Under - Stage 2

I'm having to move files back and forth between two PC's to get this stuff posted and I missed the export of stage 2. Since I have the rest of the stages I'm just going to post a "filler" entry here. I'll come back to update.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-2pro.jpg

Another stage that should come down to the sprinters like most in the race. Morris Possoni who finished second in the mountain sprint in stage one left on the break and took first place in the mountain sprints, taking over that jersey.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-2a.jpg

High Road was set up pretty well coming into the finish, but again Ciolek just didn't have the legs to pass the men in front of him. Edvald Boasson Hagen road Ciolek's wheel into a nice 4th place finish, Ciolek took 3rd and Hasselbacher won the stage.

I can't remember who got second and I can't tell from the stage 3 GC results. I'll get the results posted when I can get to my other PC (may not be until Sunday).

Tour Down Under - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-3pro.jpg

This stage has a little bit of rolling terrain, but it's still likely a sprinters stage.

The mountain leader Possoni tried to get away several times for us, but he kept getting chased down. Finally forced to give up, we sent Adam Hansen on the break instead... a small 3 man breakaway. At the first sprint Hansen didn't take part... and he cruised past the other two and rode solo the rest of the way until being caught by the pelaton.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-3a.jpg

As the sprint got organized, High Road looked pretty good with Sieberg pulling Ciolek up to the front.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-3b.jpg

Sadly, Ciolek just didn't have the legs today. He began to lose Sieberg's wheel as they neared the line. Sieberg put his head down and tried to get the best result he could for the team.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-3c.jpg

And he was able to score a second place finish! A good result from a stage where our primary sprinter wasn't on his "A" game.

Tour Down Under - Stage 4

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-4pro.jpg

An ealy climb followed by mostly flat terrain, pretty much typical for this tour. We sent Possoni on the break again and he took first in the mountain sprint. This secured the win in the mountains classification for the race.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-4a.jpg

We tried a slightly different sprint strategy today. Griepel towed our train up to the front of the pelaton, then peeled off as the sprint began. Sieberg started the sprint, with Boasson Hagen and Ciolek in tow.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-4b.jpg

Then Boasson Hagen started his charge past Sieberg... and Ciolek caught sight of Goss coming up so began his sprint past Boasson Hagen...

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-4c.jpg

And it worked perfectly! Not only did Ciolek win the stage, but Boasson Hagen got on his wheel to take 3rd... and Sieberg followed Goss's wheel for 5th. A great performance by the team!

Tour Down Under - Stage 5

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-5pro.jpg

This is the pivotal stage in this year's race. The late hill can let a puncheur create a gap and surpass any advantages sprinters have built up over the flat stages. We'll be using Boasson Hagen to counter an attack on the late hill and hope he's got good enough form to keep up. Ciolek will stick with the pelaton and perhaps recover enough before the finish line if it becomes a mass sprint. Everyone else will be protecting those two.

The break was pulled in prior to the hill and the attacks started. Boasson Hagen tried to counter an early charge by Voeckler but was unable to get free of the pelaton. Instead he began relaying strongly at the front to try to keep any breaks to a minimum.

At the top of the hill only a 3 man group had been able to escape. Jérôme Pineau, William Walker, and Jürgen Van de Walle. A late attack just after the summit allowed Marcus Ljungqvist to join this group.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-5a.jpg

Ciolek had been able to stick to the pelaton and he had to work hard to make it back to the front of the pack. Meanwhile, Boassen Hagen was pushing hard at the front to try to bring the break back in, but at 3 km they still had a little over 30 seconds.

High Road knew they couldn't play games, so Boassen Hagen started the sprint immediately to try to close the gap so no time would be lost. The other sprinters surged past as Boassen Hagen and then Ciolek blew themselves out and closed in on the break.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-5b.jpg

Marcus Ljungqvist of CSC would win the sprint amongst the break members... but would the pelaton close the gap enough to finish with the same time?

Yes they would!

Ciolek will go into the final stage with a 5 second deficit to Goss in second place. He'll have his work cut out for him tomorrow, but we're still in this thing!

Tour Down Under - Stage 6

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-6pro.jpg

Here's the scenario. With no intermediate sprints the only way Matthew Goss can be kept from winning the race is if Ciolek can win the final stage... and Goss finishes 4th or less. With a totally flat route its just going to come down to who has the legs.

Goss was a few riders back as Ciolek rode on Boassen Hagen's wheel as the sprint began. Ciolek was in good position... but then William Bonnet rocketed by with 1.5 km to go. Ciolek immediated jumped on his wheel... "there's my ride" he thought as he did so.

Could he make it past Bonnet to win the stage?

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/4-6a.jpg

No, Bonnet was just too strong. So Ciolek finishes the Tour Down Under is second place... by ONE SECOND! AAARRRGGHHH!

I've noticed others posting their difficulty so I did want to note that I am playing on hard (well, I actually did the first stage of the first race on normal before I remembered to change it).

Finshed the races leading up to the Tour of California last night. I'll get them posted tomorrow hopefully. To give you a little hint of what happens... a trend is developing in High Road stage race finishes.

Team High Road - January Report

High Road has had a very successful first month of the season, though we are suffering from a little bit of "What if-itis" based on the close second in the first pro-tour event of the year. We've collected four wins... Stage 5 in the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic by Gerald Ciolek, The Australian Championships ITT by Michael Rogers, The Australian Championships Road Race by Michael Rogers and Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under by Gerald Ciolek. We've also had some close calls... finishing second in a Bay Cycling Classic stage, the Down Under Classic, two stages of the Tour Down Under and the Tour Down Under overall classification.

This one day race is designed for the sprinters, though the terrain isn't completely flat.

High Road sent some young riders to get a bit of experience and some of our cobblers to get some race days in prior to the beginning of the cobbled season next month. Boassen Hagen will be our sprinter and our best shot at a podium.

Leader: Michael Rogers (building form for the Tour of California)
Sprinter: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Lead out/Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
Teammate: John Devine
Teammate: Roger Hammond
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Fabio Duarte
Free: Marcus Burghardt

Boonen and Petacchi were in the race, and Milram and Quickstep controlled the pace throughout. As expected, it came down to a mass sprint. Sieberg brought Boasson Hagen to the front and then just as the sprint began, Edvald jumped on the best wheel... Tom Boonen's.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/5-1a.jpg

And he was able to hang on Tom's wheel to a 3rd place finish. A good show by our young sprinter.
