I thought of that but I don't think he would come back. i would get Basso if anyone. He is a good rider and he could be a great mentor to any young riders.

He is still a good rider even if he did dope.

I think Basso is still good without doping. I don't know about Vino though he might have doped his whole life.

I think that Vino doped his entire career, but Basso only doped when A) he realized he would never beat lance without it, and B ) Riis convinced him

That was my point exactly. I agree with that word for word.

guys, remember Basso, along with everyone else, came into the culture of cycling at the time (especially in italy). If he didn't want to take drugs, the team would've thrown him out for it.
Also, considering the advantage EPO (not to mention the other drugs) will give you, if he wasn't doped before, then he's the greatest climber in history.

I do love how for some cyclists we all make exceptions and find ways to claim it wasnt their fault they dope(d). Even I do it as well - claim some riders should be banned for life regardless, and that we should let some other riders off completely. It's a funny world we live in. But I am going to enjoy seeing Basso come back to racing because he can climb well, and I still think he'll be able to do well. And the fact he hasn't tried to get a single day off of his sentance. He's just accepted it and got on with it. Unlike many riders.
Greatest? Depends how you define greatest. If it's the best undrugged climber, then wow, who knows the answer to that one. If it's most exciting then you probably have someone like the Pirate. Or perhaps one that does so well but is injured to the extreme? Like Hamilton... twice...

I was young and foolish once (I still am. just a little less foolish.)

When they nailed him to the wall with evidence. Before that he denied if for months.

I think you missed my point. I said if he was clean when he kept up with the top riders (meaning: there's no way in hell that was the case), considering how big a difference it is to just take EPO (not even counting the other drugs), then he's the best climber ever (my secondary point being that he isn't)
As for Pantani, remember at his peak in the mountain stages of 98, he wasn't climbing better than Ullrich (except for one stage where Ullrich completely died down) and was being beaten by Zulle in the mountains of the Giro
That is, until a random Festina soigneur who knew nothing about doping decided it would be a good idea to inject Zulle with corticosteroids. bad idea. But that's a story for another time

Of all points?
And I don't drink enough to get drunk - I'm a cyclist I'm only allowed to get drunk for my Birthday, in the off season, and when i need Dutch Courage.

Contador.
25 years old, won the Tour de France. I'm not sure how it gets more perfect for a team looking to win grand tours then to build around a young guy who's already proven he can win one. |
