It's a flat stage today in the Vuelta, perfect for a sprint although a break does have a chance. Favourites are Ciolek, Pettacchi and Sutton.
But there's no luck for the break today as they are caugth just before the final intermediate sprint, which is won by the relaying Rosseler before Grabovskyy and Ciolek extending his lead for the points jersey.
The sprint preparation is a mess and there are no real trains. Most sprinters are way back and it's Steegmans who's leading out the relaying train of Chocolade Jaques and Sutton is following one of those with de Ketele and Ballan behind him.
With 1.5km to go Steegman has made a gap by sprinting away from the relaying train which contains rider that cant sprint at all. Sutton is coming closer to Steegman fast and he looks very strong but will the gap be too big? All other sprinters are coming as well, but they are too late, it's gonna be between the teammates.
And it's Sutton who can get in Steegmans' slipstream and power past him on the line, it's a well deserved one-two for Quick Step.
Tomorrow we're going back into the mountain to see if anyone can challenge Intxausti for the golden jersey.

Mountain time today! The favourites are Intxausti, Mugika and Sastre but Marchante and Scnchez (3rd and 2rd in GC) should be up front as well. Note the little hill just before the finish which could give a late attack a good chance for victory, this is what we are aiming for today.
The beginning of the stage was buissiness as usuall, attacks came, a break formed and stayed away. Untill the gap was at 11'23, that was the sign for Rabobank and Caisse to send their men up front. Sanchez and Marchante should have a plan to attack the race leader it seems.
But on the last mountain the attacks didnt come, untill in the last km of it Cunego attacked for the KOM points, which caused all GC rider to counter because they were not sure if he'd stop rider after taking the points. Well, he did but there was a groupe: Intxausti, Sanchez, Marchante and Zubeldia stayed away after the attacks, while Sastre was able to get himself to the front groupe pretty fast without attacking which caused Mugika and Lloret to follow him.
This groupe worked well together in the downhill and my two riders took something to eat and drink to get some strength back to the final dash!
And when the final hill came, Intxaustie screamed to Mugika he could have the stage and so he attacked. He was followed but his attack seems strong enough.
And he takes it! He didnt slow down in the few last meters, while Marchante, Sastre and Zubeldia lost contact with the groupe due to the attack.

Mugika went up one place in the GC! Tomorrow one more mountain stage before a mountain time trial up the Estación de Esquí la Covatilla which should make the final disicions in the GC. Then it's only the traditional sprinters' stage to Madrid.

The final 'normal' mountain stage of this years Vuelta. The finish is on the 'Bola del Mundo'. A very though climb with the last 3.4km at an avarage of 10.8% and sections of over 18%.
The tv-break of the day is realed in before the final intermediate sprint, and because none of the sprinters except for Sutton are in the peloton anymore, it's an easy win for him so he get's a little close to Ciolek again, allthough he seems to have secured his jersey. Maybe Intxausti can take it but he'll need a lot of luck.
On the final climb, the attacks come as usual. It's Popovych who starts it and he's folled by Sastre, Inxausti and Mugika. Others would follow later.
Then suddenly, L.L. Sanchez comes powering past the groupe. He first takes 8 seconds, then it becomes 15 and even 25 seconds. But then the teammates Mugika and Intxausti both start taking very fast relays. The others in the groupe(Lloret, Sastre, Popovych) are struggeling to keep up but the gap remains stable.
In the final kilometer Mugika and Intxausti try their best to sprint to Sancgez and Intxausti makes it to his wheel but it's too late for victory. Sanchez deserved it as he obviously had a great day. Mugika come in a few seconds later but the gap to Sastre, Lloret and Popo is a little bigger. However, Gomez Marchante is the big loser of the day. He never made it to the groupe and goes down to 4th place in the GC after losing 1'34. Zubeldia loses allmost 3 minutes and the pack is even further back.

Today should bring the descision in the GC, after this there won't be any changes. Everything needs to happen today. And exactly, today Intxausti is having a bad day. His daily form is -5. However his lead is big enough so no worries.
On to the race, This is a 20km long climb, which is not the steepest. Only around 5.5% avarage, but a section between kilometer 15.5 and 19.5 is just under 10% so the difference should be made there.
In the beginning you see some riders struggeling past the finish, and still having a bad time. Others on the other hand, save their energy for the last stage tomorrow. This is what I told my riders so these where the bottom 5 finishers:
187 Diego Ulissi QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 9'29
188 Sébastien Rosseler QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 9'47
189 Gert Steegmans QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 10'26
190 Dimitri Claeys QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 11'07
191 Christopher Sutton QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC + 13'31
Ulissi, Rosseler and Claeys will have to real in a breakaway one more time while Steegmans will have to lead out Sutton for a final stage win.
But no to the big guns. Obviously, the top GC riders where up front today. But there where a few big differences.
3rd today is Intxausti in the golden jersey on '32 seconds. As said, this was not his best day so a 3rd place is not bad at all.
2nd Is L.L. Sanchez, again showing his great form. He was only 2 seconds slower then the winner...
And that was, Mugika! Taking his 2nd win of the season and in this Vuelta.
Conclusion: No big changes in the GC, Intxausti won the Vuelta and the team is ready for the World Championships.

Today is the final stage in the vuelta, the traditional sprint stage to madrid. Favourites today are Petacchi, Ciolek and Sutton.
As we have the race leader, and a good shot for the stage, we take our responsability to chase the break in the first part of the race. in the last 40km other spirnt teams start to help us and the break was easily caught.
In the final corner with 3km to go, there is only one small sprinters train with Claeys - Steegmans - Sutton - Petacchi - Ciolek. There are some other lost sprinters up front, which one there own, they certainly won't win.
For us, it's looking good as both Claeys and Sutton have a daily form of +4, although this has a negative side, as Steegmans didnt recover good from the last 20 days and he's struggeling to follow Claeys. Let's hope he won't screw up.
Unfortunatly, he does. Claeys get's the speed up, but Ale-Jet is closing fast so Steegmans immediatly has to pass him to prevent the other sprinters from catching up, but he's not good enough. Sutton, now has to close the gap to Claeys, and then go for it with still 1.5km to go. Will it be too far?
No, it was not too far! Sutton shows he is in great form for the worlds and takes and impressive win in Madrid, with Alzate 2nd and Petacchi 3rd while Claeys still manages a nice 4th place.
And Intxausti finished in the peloton without any problem, which mean have have won the Vuelta and completed our final sponsor goal!

Welcome, today it is finally time for the World Championships Individual Time Trial in and around Zolder in Belgium. It's a 53km flat course so it should be perfect for the likes of Cancellara, Kittel and Wiggins. It's obviuous the Quick Step riders have been preparing hard for this, but for 2 riders(Reinikanen and Chagoya) this party won't go on as their countries did not qualify.
Intxausti is one of the first to start and he immediatly set a great time. (5th 1'46)
About half an houre later, there are again some big guns coming to the finish line. Rosseler(6th 1'52) has overtaken Pozzato(33th + 4'55), and he'll be taken over shortly after by Cancellara(2nd '20).
Then it's Dave Z who's flying over the track(4th 1'19).
But Grabobskyy is going even faster, he is taking every risk and in the penultimate corner he was not more then one inch away from crashing into a parked car. (3rd '58)
Then it's time for the British hope, Bradley Wiggins. He is a little dissapoiting however(9th 2'49)
And the winner of the WC ITT 2010 is.......
Marcel Kittel!!!! The German has been preparing for this race ever since he recoverd from his injury last years due to which he couln't be in last years WC. He took 1h07'07" to complete the 53 km beating number two, Fabian Cancellara by 20 seconds.

It has to be said, this is a silly story...
I, personally, prefer realistic stories, or stories where i see the team build up from the beginning and get as strong as this.
Nice reporting though

all I can say is that there are more then enough realistic stories, and if I had to make a story building up a team like this all the way to 2010 it would take ages.
With this story I hope to be original, and I hope people will keep reading it. |
