General Career Discussion - PCM15
Ian Butler
Hmm got 2 things I really want to make long careers out of for this edition:

1. Be a Pro (obviously): make a new Bernard Hinault. GT racer but also chances in (hilly) classics, always fun to do.

2. Team mode (traditional) with Lotto - Soudal. With their squad including De Gendt, Benoot, Wellens... they have way too many of my favorite riders not to play with them Grin

I have in mind 2 long careers as well

1. Be a pro - a Spanish puncheur , the new Valverde or Purito . First , stage wins and KOM Jerseys , then Ardennes and later on train as climber and have a go for GC in Vuelta/TDF .

2. Team mode - BMC . Gilbert for Ardennes , stage wins in Giro and WC + Lombardia , Van Avermaet for Flandres and stage wins in TDF , Tejay for TDF ,Dauphine and the American Races , Caruso for the GC in Giro and Atapuma for Vuelta .

Reasons this year:

1. Be a pro
2. PC-Team - any tipps (mountain, hilly, sprints)?

Just started a career as Team Sky, and i'm finding the objectives to be a bit weird. 1st in the Giro is the top objective, which is fine, but then in the TDF i'm only expected to win the mountain jersey, and only at 2* importance. By comparison, i'm expected to win the tour down under with 3* importance.

It doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game too much, but it is odd.

AI in transferring young riders has become much better. I can see the AI actually signs big talents now, instead of the useless ones where the big talents get stuck in small teams for 5 years.

This makes for rapid progression of some youngsters. There are already some real Pinot, Quintana, Kwiatkowski and Kittels out there, who are already really good at super young age.

The only trick is, there shouldn't be to many. But so far I don't; see too many

Can someone explain the equipment R&D system? I have been researching a model all season but I don't see what is happening. Granted I skipped the tutorial, so if it is explained there feel free to tell me to be more patient and learn from that. Pfft

I badly need to have a better manual then the one on the offical website.

I really don't understand the scouting and potential systeme.

1. How do I give a scout work? Right now it looks like the scout just work in the region where he is from...?

2. My scout gives me a potential for every rider on my team. But how can I see where his growth potential is (in what skill)? Or can I only guess and look at the graph where I can follow his development?

Wow, this topic is not very active now that we have Pro Cyclist! Grin

I'll produce some activity tho, I started playing with CULT Energy Pro Cycling earlier today, and I am now fairly into June - which means we are go for transfer! Grin

TEAM ANNO 2015

Already in our first race, we took a win, when G. Larsson attacked the last hill in C. Evans Great Ocean Road Race. It seemed to be a great season, but now in June we only have 3 victories so far, but I won't say it has been a bad season anyway. We have completed several of our sponsorgoals, even though we really don't have any great riders. G. Larsson clearly has been our primary man to make the difference, as he has taken the 2 of our 3 victories, as he also took the win in our second sponsorgoal, Tour du Haut Var's first stage.

So it's now time for the transfers for the next season, and as I really don't wanna mess the game up by signing some ridiculous good players from the World Tour-teams, I really don't know what I'm looking for. 1 possibility is to sign T. Farrar or M. Renshaw who are soon to retire.

You guys got any suggestions? Maybe some young incoming stars from the Continental Division? Grin

One quality of life thing that would save so much time would be merging the rider objectives and scheduling screens, or at the least, not showing any races on the rider objective screens, that are not valid for the team to take part in.

If you try and sign a rider who has objectives that your team aren't going to be able to fulfil then they should probably refuse to join you.

The objectives take absolutely ages to set up properly, and I'm not even convinced that they do much good. It's just not much fun, and I wish they had improved the interface for this year.

Do you mean something like this:

I have updated my planner for PCM 2015 but I don't have the game so I cannot tell if it works (especially how it would work for the Be-A-Pro mode). But you are free to test it.

Hi Lachi - I'm getting an error - gene_workplan is neither a DataColumn nor a DataRelation for table DYN_cyclist.

This happens when initially loading a new save

Please upload your save somewhere and send me the link so that I can test it.

The progression of riders is way too slow. I have Küng in my team, gave him the best coach with whom he has an excellent relationship. Until July he got +1TT and +1Prologue. This being said, he is pretty much the only rider who progressed. Emmanuel Buchmann got a +1MO, that is it.

tbh the only reason i haven't started career yet is because of things like this. Career mode always has the most bugs/flaws before the patches.

Be a pro is at least playable. Career not until they ironed out bugs and flaws like the one Skylax just reported

For me the career stays unplayable even after fixing the bugs. That whole mode is a big annoyance because I am not only forced to cope with the silly implementations of scouting, equipment R&D, sponsor objectives, season planning and riders objectives. On top I will waste my time being fooled by stupid AI if I play stages in 3D.

The only working part of the game was the quick simulation of the races. But in PCM 2014 they even messed up the quick simulation because it was not possible to simulate to any date I wanted. Did they fix that for PCM2015?

Jesleyh
Yes you can now select specific dates for simulation. You can only do that for 4 weeks though, if I recall correctly.

I've started a short ish career with Orica in time I wait for a proper DB. Currently I'm at the final stage of Oman and so far I've had some good results:

Brett Lancaster - 1st AUS NC
Simon Clarke - 5th Tour Down Under, Stage win
Magnus Cort Nielsen - 1st Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race
Michael Matthews - 1st Herald Sun Tour, Stage win
Daryl Impey, 6h Dubai Tour
Michael Albasini - 1st Tour of Qatar (Bonus seconds from sprints)
And as it stands in Oman: Pieter Weening, 7th GC and Stage win. Esteban Chaces 6th GC. Smile

Also found a ridiculously good regen.

I can confirm this. For anybody who wonders how it works (because documentation or even a simple game guide offered by Cyanide is utter bullshit - what the hell is the gel for? I still couldn't figure out for several years in a row): in career mode main menu press Tab and the calendar opens up. Then select the desired date (maximum 4 weeks ahead of time) and simulation begins and won't stop unless anything requires your immediate attention.

@Lachi, I can feel your pain. I don't see it as drastically as you do, for me the career of 14-iteration was playable (certainly not free of bugs, full of balancing issues, the AI was mostly solid though).
I can't say I like the new changes that much. The new scouting system does make less sense then the last one. I don't see any difference between legendary scouts (potential range of 5-8, 4-7 etc) and unknown ones (pretty much the same range). That is a bug. I thought, the longer I had riders on my team, the more scouts would find out about them (exact potential, maybe even limits for certain stats) and legendary scouts would be much faster than regional ones. Nope, can't say I found a difference with 3 test careers simulated until July.

The scouting of riders became completely automated and arbitrary. You just hire scouts and they start...well scouting people. No influence whatsoever, except for this intensive scouting of youth riders that seems completely useless (JULY! first season). The estimation of the potential doesn't change, there is no feedback from scouts, there is even just one possibility during the year (until July) to scout people and I somehow managed to select the wrong rider.

Season planning is a clickfest hell, which is due to awful UI design. I am pretty sure that those people at Cyanide don't play their career mode, otherwise they would have found out by now that you either have to write all sponsor objectives down on a sheet of paper next to the rider's goals to be able to figure out a halfway decent plan. I have been doing this for almost 10 years now when they decided that rider's form actually matters in PCM 2005. On the plus side: they did manage to give a quick overlook of how a stage race is composed. So at least you don't have to skip between sponsor goal page, rider objectives and the planning page to scroll through the stages to find out whether the Tour of Fjords you are supposed to win is composed of only flat stages or whether you better send someone with hill-skills to do the job.

Of course, the implementation of the U23-team doesn't make much sense either. Ok, so you create a team and random riders/regens are allocated to the team with no input on the user's part (Oh yeah, you can "determine" whether you want to search world-wide and put an emphasis on stage racers or whatever...not that it made any difference, I selected "country" instead of regional or world-wide and 1/2 of my team was still of foreign descent). Then those riders participate at races...at least I think. There is no interaction, no feedback. I have to scroll through the planning page in order to find out which races they participated at, then have to scroll through the result pages, select the races I remember them to race in and have to sort the list of stages by team in order to get an idea of how they did. Oh yeah, that is very interesting.

The design of the game is flawed and the people at Cyanide have proven to not be able to implement a basic manager part into a game that features management in its name. They are pretty good at graphics and building an arcade game, but the management is broken beyond repair. It has to be redone by people who know the basics of a streamlined and yet informative UI (btw, the UI in races is horrible as well, the scaling is horrendous) and who have a basic understanding of what management actually is.

I don't even like the be-a-pro mode. It is boring and superficial as hell to me. This might be appealing to everyone who wants to see his/her digital impersonation winning the TdF without cheating the rider into the game via an editor. In career mode at least you can control different riders on different terrain to make the game interesting on flat as well as on mountain stages.

tl;dr: Cyanide sucks, the game is seriously flawed in details and yet a little fun if you can ignore the design issues, new features are horrendously implemented, won't be better in the future
