Surely not the motor racing track?
It's actually a cool one

Photos from the recent Good Friday Castle Combe classic. B) Knew someone would have photos somewhere.
Yep it is the race circuit, hence why its fast and really nice to race on
And yes Smoothie, i even tried to help her when she got dropped, but she decided to follow the fat old man and get dropped rather than sit on my wheel and go the shorter way into the head wind. experience

3/4/08
After a weeks break from racing and two solid weeks of full-on training I had the first time trial of the season today.
Not being a time trialist, but rather doing it for fitness purposes and strength training I wasn't expecting that great a time.
The course is called the Wormington 8, as it is 8 miles in length. It's not a flat course, but it isn't hilly either. Nicely rolling is probably what would be the best description. As the local club (other than VCMont.) runs them, their rules go, and it was a 2-up tonight. So I was going to do it with my good mate who has started to do the National level racing this year - I'm still on the regional stuff. So I knew he was strong. There was only one other pair from VCMont. racing tonight, and after 2 miles one of them had the misfortune of their steering column snapping (thats whatcha get for carbon!), the other carried on to do a mid 19minute, which is still pretty darn good.
We finished after catching our 4 minute markers (an old man, and his son) in roughly 18 minutes 57 seconds. Which for me was pretty knackering. I'll update the post at a later date when the times are put online.
This weekend I shall either be doing my first road race, or just popping down to Thruxton (again). If I do Thruxton, I think I'll save my suicidal attack until 2 laps to go as then I may have a chance of staying clear.

The past weekend's race was SNOWED off as the organisers couldn't get to the track. Slightly annoying as it mucked up my weekend of riding.
On other news, the results from last weeks TT are in. See bottom of post for positions.
And I've finally cleaned my bike for the first time in like 6 months, has new tires, new bar tape and new saddle. Rode if for the first time last night, and it rained on me. Typical.

28.12.08
Well, with a massssssive gap between my last "report" and this reply, I thought I'd do a little run down of the past season. I stopped writing here as I had started for PCM Monthly, which, like most things, has died a quiet death.
This past year, I raced from February through to September. 26 seperate races all in all, with 2 of them being stage races. The year saw me step up another level to racing National B races, which to those not familiar with British Cycling, is one under National A/Premier Calender races, which in turn could be classed as one under .2 UCI ranked races.
No serious results to announce, other than once I returned down to racing with my own category (the racing system allows you to race with better people most of the time) where I achieved a 7th place on a thursday circuit race via a sprint, and a 4th place due to a break on the following saturday. The little bit of good form I had was mainly used up in the major race of the year for me.
Ras de Cymru (Welsh Stage Race)
A 5 day, 6 stage event took place in July, and will take place again this coming year. My first time doing the race, it was a major shock to the system.
Day 1 - A short ITT of 12km, with a final 2km uphill. Finished about 40th out of 80 without any TT equipment.
Day 2 - A 80km stage with 3 serious climbs. Survived all 2, and got dropped on the 3rd. Lost 2 minutes to stage winner, felt rather tired.
Day 2 (still) - A 18km TTT followed in the afternoon. A team of 4, and 1 was allowed to be dropped. The TT specialist came along specifically for this stage, but he was dropped in the first 3 miles, so I had to hang on in. Team finished in 9th place out of the 20 teams. Pretty good, but tiring day.
Day 3 - Another hilly route, but some awesome riding by myself (being in the right place at the right time) saw me conserve energy really well, and I finished safetly in the bunch.
Day 4 - A hellish day. Another 90km stage in the wet and wind of the Brecon Beacons which saw me get dropped at the end of the first lap (of 4) on the steep 1km climb to the finish line/over it. A bunch (groupetto) of 25 of us formed and we finished a good 15 minutes down on the break that won. Very tough day.
Day 5 - A fast finishing day as the first 40km were all with a tail wind, and the leaders team were unwilling to let the break go. Average of 28mph for the first hour. Yikes. Then we turned into the headwind, and for the first time I was greatful for one. And onto the final 5 km climb up a mountain - the first proper climb I've ever raced up. Took a good 20 minutes to climb it, and I finished overall in 50th place.
I'll update again later with what I've been upto in my "off season", but for now, off for Top Gear...

Training
After stopping racing in September, I started to look towards the off season of course. Unlike many riders, I have yet to take October off, and in fact, spent this years October training more than I usually do...
I gained a new coach/advisor, who knows what he's talking about to some extent, rather than my old coach, who, as well as never emailing me again, didn't really give me anything new to do in 2 years.
I started off with the base miles of course, and am still looking at doing more in Jan. The aim was to build up to doing a LOT of mileage every day, but with bad weather, ice, a crash and uni, the usual excuses got in the way, and I find myself having undertrained for the nth year running. However, the training I have done has been beneficial, and I am, to the best of my knowledge, the fittest I have ever been.
For those interested, my stats are as follows:
Height - 1.68m
Weight - 67.5kg
Age - 20
The following data comes from physiology testing done last year, March time. The test was an incremental ramp test, done on my own bike. Wattages increased by 30watts per set period of time.
Max HR on bike - 198
VO2 max - 69 ml.kg.min-1
Resting blood lactate - 1 mmol
Max attained - 12.3 mmol
Ventilatory threshold/Max steady state pace @ 89% VO2 max
Max Power output - 470 watts
Power to weight ratio - 7W.kg
Power Output at Max Steady State - 290-310 watts
Heart Rate at Max SS - 180-190bpm
The latest testing, following a different procedure, gave me different readings. The test was a ramp test, that, after 3 minutes at 0 watts, would continually increase in watts until exhaustion (cadence dropped below 65, whilst attempting to maintain at 80).
Max HR 197 (on bike, running is 204)
Didn't see VO2 values, but for other, tests done at just above max steady state, was in the range of 56-60 ml.kg.min-1.
Watts reached 410.
Max steady state watts around 265. 278 watts can be continued for 25 minutes before fatigue sets in.
So, with competition coming up close, the aim of January is to increase my max wattage, and to increase my VO2 max as well. With awful weather still expected, I will be gyming about 5 times a week, with a lot of focus on pushing my aerobic system to its max for 40 minutes, and more time spent on building up my leg muscles once more. Hopefully when the weather returns to better than ice, I'll be able to get out more.
Anyway, thats it for now, I'll post again if anyone is interested.

Nah I didn't do the 14th, I'd pretty much finished racing by then, just did 3 road races at the end of the season, but was massively out of form for them. Still, always a laugh!
Yeah, make sure you come say hi to me if you see me at a race.

Well, there isn't a great deal of news to spill... Especially considering it's real life (mine) and takes a while to get through things
