Interview with 100% ME Directeur Sportifs
Jeremy Hunt and Rob Hayles
Hello I'm here with 100% Me Directeur Sportifs Jeremy Hunt and Rob Hayles to talk about their phenomenal start to the season, which saw the tam dominate the New Zealand Cycle Classic. So Rob how was it being in the team car, when the team were dominating the racing?
Yeah it was amazing it just seemed like they were riding in the clouds, I don't think anyone of us was expecting to do so well as these are just a young group of guys that have been pros for not very long, and this was our first race as a team. Rob
Jeremy what were you expecting from the team going into the race?
Well to be honest we weren't expecting much from the guys as they are all under 25, we were hoping for a stage win with Andy (Fenn), but not to win all the classifications like we did. The thing is the guys rode amazingly well, they were definitely the team of the race as we were in every break and were up there on every stage. They deserved to do what the did. Jeremy
Were you surprised by any of the riders, and how well they did?
Yeah, Dayer Quintana one of our young Colombian Climbers, rode the race much better than we were expecting as we thought he would be just able to sit in the bunch, as he hasn't been racing for that long, but he was flying as you saw when he won the KoM jersey. Teo Geoghegan Hart is riding well at the minute with a great ride today in the break almost all day today at the Vuelta a Mallorca, and I think at 17 years old if he can put out a mature and tactically astute ride like that, it shows he's going to be a star of the future. Felix English and John Dibben were also riding really well in New Zealand, but I think all the lads have been on great form in general, especially when they are all young bike riders that still have a lot to learn. We made sure that we hit the ground running as we are aiming to move up to the PCT Tour for next year, but we'll have to see how that goes. Jeremy
What are you expecting for the next few races?
Well we may not get as good results as we will be racing against World tour teams at races like the Tour of Oman, which is one of our target races and a very prestigious race. All we want is for the lads to learn what it takes to win at that level, but we aren't expecting them to win, but who knows maybe they will be as impressive as they have this week. "The aim for the guys today is to get someone in the break, preferably someone with KoM points so we can have a crack at getting the jersey, as it is unlikely that we can get into the Top 10 on GC with a 40 second Gap from 11th to 10th. We also want to lead Fenn, out for the sprint, however we are hoping that the break will be able to stay away. Rob Hayles, DS
"The guys really suffered from having a great ride yesterday, all of our riders managed to attack out of the bunch, however it seems the peloton weren't to keen on letting Pete and Simon out of the bunch, so they suffered from their attacks, and were dropped with less than 10km to go, which was a shame as they've rode so well this week. Although they still should be happy as they were climbing with the best in the world yesterday, and were even attacking them, so we can't complain after all we aren't supposed to be beating World Tour teams, I'm proud of the lads and they should be proud with how they did today." Rob Hayles, DS
"The day just didn't go to plan and Luck wasn't on our side, it's a hard world in the pro peloton and I think our lads learned that today." Jeremy Hunt, DS

"Today the guys rode well for Andy, it's just a shame that he finished with a slow puncture, so that was his chance over but he still finished in a respectable position even without the puncture. We didn't manage to get anyone in the break today, but we'll try again tomorrow and hope that Andy gets a clear run in the sprint because he is flying at the minute." "The aim for the guys today was to lead Andy out for the sprint and to try and get a guy in the break, but that didn't quite go to plan. However the lads did manage to lead Andy out and he got 8th which was a mother great result considering the amount of talent that is at this race. I think the lads have showed in he past few races that they are close to getting a big win." Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 3 - Flat Road Race
"Today the race went completely to plan and I think that if Andy had launched his sprint slightly later he could of got a top 3 because yesterday he beat Boasson Hagen and then today Boasson Hagen was 2nd, so you know it's just about positioning yourself well. We managed to get Simon in the break, however he wasn't able to get any sprint points so he didn't gain much, but he got the experience and I think he will improve from it. Jeremy Hunt, DS

Malcolm Elliot Joins 100% ME as a Directeurs Sportif
We are proud to announce that ex-pro Malcolm Elliot will be joining the team to work along side Jeremy and Rob as a Directeur Sportif, however he will also be helping mentor Andy and Scott to help them to access the top levels of sprinting. Malcolm told us,"It's a pleasure to get asked to work with young bike racers, and I hope that I will be able to give them pointers on what they need to adapt or change to access the highest echelons of professional cycling. I am most looking forward to working with Andy as I believe that he is like what I was at his age, as he has an unbelievable natural talent and I aim to help him to access that, as well as helping Scott to develop as a bike rider."
Malcolm (born 1 July 1961) is a former English professional cyclist, whose professional career has lasted from 1984 to 1997 when he retired and from 2003 up to 2011 when he made his comeback in British domestic racing.
His palmares includes three stages and the points classification in the Vuelta a España, two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, and winning the amateur Milk Race and its professional version, the Kellogg's Tour. He rode and finished the Tour de France in 1987 and 1988. Elliott also competed at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1996.

"The guys today rode really well considering how hard the stage was going to be, and we knew that at the end of the day we were always going to struggle to stay with the pure climbers at the finish, but the lads really gave it a go today. I was really surprised to get two of our guys up the road to begin with, when Felix and Dayer got up the road in a group of strong riders. Then Simon managed to bridge the gap so we had three guys in the break, but we knew that the bunch weren't going to let the break get away. I was impressed by Pete's attack today when he went after we hit the final climb, getting away with Sagan and then Contador bridged the gap and immediately attacked. I know that Pete didn't have anything left when the bunch caught him, but I think he should be happy as he wasn't far behind them all. Rob Hayles, DS
Stage 5 - Hilly Road Race.
"The guys did another great ride today as they were up at the front of the race until the final climb when the WorldTour riders showed they weren't going to wait until the sprint. However we did manage to get Teo into the break, although we were expecting him to have some riders for company but never mind he rode great all day, considering he was on his own. He did well not to be caught until just under 50km to go. Then Pete, Adam and Simon all finished together showing that they are all on good form at the moment. Rob, DS
"You could tell the guys had all suffered yesterday, but we still managed to lead Andy out for the sprint, it was just a shame he wasn't able to capitalise on what I think was almost a perfect lead out." Jeremy Hunt, DS
"Today went really well as we got Adam Yates into the break, so we didn't have to chase on the front of the peloton, once the break was caught we tried to lead Andy out, but there was a crash with 2km to go that took down Scott and Andy had to almost stop to get around it, which is a shame as we were right at the pointy end of the race, but that's bike racing." Malcolm Elliot, DS
Stage 2 - Flat Road Race.
"The lads rode out of their skins today, as they were the only team interested in chasing the break down. Which meant that when we came to the sprint the lads had nothing left to lead Andy out so Scott had to improvise by following another sprint train, but he made a mistake on when he needed to launch his lead out and Andy suffered because of it. It's a shame that they didn't get the win because they would of deserved it after all the work they did on the front today. Jeremy Hunt, DS

"The guys were on it from the start as Andy managed to get into the break, so that was brilliant result for the guys as it meant that they didn't have to chase the break. Giving a free ride to Adam, Simon and Pete. Rob Hayles, DS
"Adam was feeling really good today so when we hit the first main climb, he managed to distance the rest of the bunch, which showed how well he is going at the minute. Malcolm Elliot, DS
"Adam then managed to bridge across to Andy, however he only got a moments respite before attacking off up the mountain, he then managed to gain the mountains points, meaning he was closing in on the KoM lead. Malcolm Elliot, DS
Pete then managed to stay with the front group, once it split to an elite group of six climbers, then again as it shrunk to 3 riders, meaning he was guaranteed a good result today. Rob Hayles, DS
"Adam was then caught by the group of three going up the final climb, but he had no hope of holding on as he had worked his socks off to get away, however he did manage to hold on to 4th over the top of the final climb putting him into the climbers jersey, which was a great result for the guys. Rob Hayles, DS
"Pete was sadly distanced at the top of the final climb, however he managed to hold on for 3rd on the stage, with Adam 4th. Keldermen managed to win the two up sprint for the win, but I'm happy for him as he's another young guy for the future. I think today has been a great success with Adam getting the KoM jersey and Pete sat 3rd overall. Malcolm Elliot, DS

"The guys were disappointed with how they did today as the didn't try to get in the break, in the hope that Andy would be good enough for the sprint, but he got boxed coming into the final kilometre and from then on he just didn't have the chance to move around the other sprinters, which is a shame as he was feeling good. Malcolm Elliot, DS
Stage 5 - Mountainous Road Race
Although the results of lads may not look particularly special, the all rode really well with Adam attacking early on the climb, and Pete fought valiantly to maintain his top 3 on GC which he managed to even though he didn't get a top 10 on the stage. Andy, Scott and Felix all worked hard to keep the break at a manageable gap and Simon rode well to position Pete at the front as we hit the final climb. Rob Hayles, DS
Stage 6 - Flat Road Race.
"The guys were tired after yesterday and we could see that as they really suffered today, its a shame because Andy was feeling ok but he had no chance without a proper lead out. Malcolm Elliot, DSEdited by JoeArmstrong13 on 02-06-2014 19:34

"Andy told the guys he wasn't feeling to good today so we decided to try and get him not the break as today's stage looked like the kind of stage that the break would stay away, and it did. The guys then did great to try and lead out Felix for the sprint and his 3rd was brilliant as it was his best result of the season, and he truly deserves it after the way he rode today." Malcolm Elliot, DS
Stage 8 - Flat Road Race.
Andy was extremely tired after yesterday in the break, but the lads still rode great and we managed to get Simon into the break again, which just shows how quickly he recovers. I think he's going to be a star of the future." Malcolm Elliot, DS
Stage 9 - Flat Road Race
The team worked hard to lead out Andy today, but coming into the final kilometre there was a mass crash in the peloton, which took him down and if it hadn't he would of won as he was in the perfect position, and he said he had really good legs. But that's bike racing! Rob Hayles, DS
Stage 10 - Flat Road Race.
As today was the final stage the lads went all out to get in the break, which worked as Scott got into the break and wasn't caught until 2km to go, which was brilliant. Andy then rode hard to get into the right position for the sprint, but he couldn't manage it without a sprint train.

"Simon rode the perfect TT today, you would of thought that he was riding on the track the way he rode today, nothing could stop him, he was amazing. Felix also did amazing with 15th when we weren't even expecting him to do that well. I 'm just so happy for the lads. Rob Hayles, DS
Stage 2 - Hilly Road Race
"Adam was our leader for today with Simon acting as a super domestique. They both rode brilliantly today and I'm sure that if Adam had been on top form he would have dominated the race. Scott and Felix both did well today as they managed to get into the break, although they were dropped when the race hotted up. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 3 - Hilly Road Race.
" Scott and Adam both rode brilliantly today as they were both up there when the race properly started, and considering they aren't on top form it's a great showing for the lads. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 4 - Flat Road Race.
"The guys led Scott out perfectly today, but he launched his sprint to early when it was a headwind finish, although he's still very happy with his positioning and I'm sure he'll learn from this and move forward. Rob Hayles, DS

"I think that the lads rode well on both these stages as our main goal is to keep Adam and Pete at the front, so that went to plan and I think that the lads can be happy, it would of been nice to get Andy up for the win, but that's bike racing I suppose. You can't win everything and I think that's what the lads have learned after the grey results at New Zealand. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 3 - Flat TT
Today we just wanted to get as high up the GC as possible ready for tomorrow, as we know that this TT isn't going to decide the race, so we just wanted to make sure that Adam and Pete didn't lose to much time. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 4 - Hilly Road Race
Teo and Scott managed to get into the break today, which was a big goal for us as we wanted to be in contention for the KoM jersey, as we believe we have a better chance of winning it, so we managed to get Scott up there, who is pretty impressive on the climbs and he won most of the KoM sprints. Jeremy Hunt
Scott then distanced the rest of the group and they were caught by the bunch with about 30 km to go, then when we hit the next climb Pete attacked in an attempt to soften up the opposition so that Adam would be able to get a decent gap to the bunch. Jeremy Hunt
Pete then caught and passed Scott with about 20 km to go, but the peloton weren't going to let Pete get away and they started to work hard to get him back into the bunch. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Pete was caught with about 10km to go, and almost immediately Adam countered which was a brilliant piece of riding and tactics. The bunch didn't seem to be interested in causing Adam and he built up a decent lead. Jeremy
Going under the final KM flag, Adam still had a 20 second lead over two riders trying to get across to him, and I don't now about him but we were Crying in the car as we realised he was going to take the win. Rob Hayles
We were all so happy for him, as Adam and the guys rode so well. They definitely deserve this win and I think it shows how much talent they all have to win against very experienced pros. The leaders jersey was just a bonus, and I don't think Adam could believe it. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Stage 5 - Hilly Road Race
"We managed to get Jon Dibben and Teo up the road today, but the bunch didn't seem interested to chase at first and with 50 km to go Teo dropped Jon on the punishing climb, but he still had an 8 minute lead over the bunch, and with 20km to go he still had 4 minutes, however he began to tire and the race behind began to kick off with a flurry of attacks on the Adam, but him and Pete managed to stay calm and chase them down with Adam's rival for the leaders jersey, but with Adam finishing in the same group it wasn't enough to take the lead off him. As well as Scott taking enough KoM points to win the KoM jersey, which is a great surprise and a huge onus to the team. Rob Hayles, DS

"Scott was our leader for today as we knew that he would be one of the best over the pavé sectors so we made sure that he was at the head of the bunch going into the final 20km when the attacks started happening and Scot managed to ride away from the bunch with another rider, but he was to keen to work and the other rider just let him kill himself on the front, and then jumped him in the sprint which in reality Scott should of won, but that's just naivety and he's learned his lesson and I'm sure he will be up there in the next few races. Jeremy Hunt, DS
Tour of the Reservoir
"The guys were riding for Andy today, but we wanted to get a guy in the break to make it easier for the team because we know how unpredictable these races can be. So we sent Pete up the road and he got in a strong break of 5 riders, and we thought they would stay away as the bunch didn't want to chase, but with about 25km to go the bunch seemed to waken up and they brought back a 4 minute gap in 20km. We then managed to get Scott and Andy to the front for the sprint, and Andy did what he does best and got the win. Jeremy Hunt, DS
"Pete was our leader for today as we knew the finish would suit him. However we underestimated the break and we gave them to much of a gap going onto the final climb. It was completely our fault in the car, but they rode a lot stronger than we were expecting and hats off to them they went really well. Pete still did a great ride behind pulling away with 4 riders going into the final 5 km, but it was to late for him to catch the break and he had to resign himself to the best of the GC contenders. Rob Hayles, DS
Stage 2 - Flat Road Race
"Today it was all about getting Andy up there for the sprint, which we managed he just didn't have the legs for the race today, which was a real shame as he was riding so well and I think on the right day he could of won, but he suffered yesterday and I think that he was just a bit naive. Malcolm Elliot, DS
Stage 3 - Flat TT
We knew that Pete would do a good ride today, and we presumed he'd take over the GC, but Tom Scully (Madison Genesis) rode out of his skin and took over the race lead, which was a great achievement for him, but a shame for Pete but he'l move on and aim to make Tom suffer in the next few days..
Stage 4 - Flat Road Race.
"Today the lads rode great, with Dayer getting into the break meaning that we didn't have to work on the front. When he was caught we aimed to lead out Andy, bu going into the final 2 km, he and Scott were to far back, and I'm impressed that he even got 4th as he must of been in 25th or something when he launched his sprint.
Stage 5 - Hilly Road Race
"Pete wanted to try and attack today, so we tried to keep the break at no ore than one minute so that he could get a possible stage win. He did attack, but Scully is on superb form at the minute and was able to bring him back every time, with the help of Ian Wilkinson, who's coming into good form before the Lincoln GP next week. Then when Ian attacked for the stage win, Pete wasn't able to follow but he worked hard to try and close the gap but the damage had been done.Edited by JoeArmstrong13 on 09-06-2014 16:43

"Today the aim was to get Andy towards the top end of the race going into the final few laps, and get a man in the break as in a race like this we knew that the break could go all the way. We immediately achieved the latter as we got Josh Edmondson and Jon Dibben into the break, with Jon being our back up to Andy, we knew that he would be difficult to catch on the cobble climb. With 50km to go Jon dropped Josh and rode on ahead gaining around 6 minutes with 25km to go.
As Josh was caught Pete attacked with 5 laps to go and he began to develop a healthy lead of 2 minutes, but the bunch chased hard and with 15km to go it was just Jon up the road with a 2 minute lead. Then on the penultimate time up the climb, Ian Wilkinson attacked and Andy managed to chase him, but the two of them began to pull away catching Jon on the final time up the climb with just 500m to go, by this time Ian had dropped Andy and was soloing to a great win with Andy third and Jon putting in a great ride for 3rd. Rob Hayles, DS
Premier Calendar Rankings
With Scott having to sit this race out, with illness Andy took over the lead in the premier calendar rankings after a 1st and a 2nd in the last two rounds, but Ian Wilkinson isn't far behind Andy with only a 3 point gap, but Scott only 39 points behind in 4th and Jon Dibben moving up to 6th after his amazing 3rd place today.

"Josh managed to get up the road, and he was bridged across to by three guys, we then realised that this wasn't going to come back so we sent Pete and Andy across the gap, so we had three riders in the front grip securing the team prize on the night.
"Jon and Ryan then tried to bridge across to the leaders, but they didn't make it meaning we had 5 guys off the front of the bunch, and three fighting it out for the win. Josh took all three sprints, meaning he's leading the Points jersey.
" Pete and Josh then started to work for Andy, as he was by far the strongest rider in the group. Pete started the lead out with a lap to go, and immediately it was clear Andy was going to win as nobody seemed ti be able to keep up with Pete and Andy as they sprinted around the small circuit, on the sea front.
"Andy then took the win at his 'local' round, and the boys managed to secure the team prize on the night, showing they were by far the strongest on the night.

"Jon Dibben and Josh Edmondson managed to get up the road today, and they built up a brilliant lead, as they worked hard together, meaning it was a benefit from being on the same team, but we always knew that Josh would struggle towards the end as he isn't great on the cobbles, but he still did well enough to get 2nd. With Ian Wilkinson and another rider catching them in the final few metres but not being able to get passed. "The guys went into today riding to a plan to get Pete up for the win, as well as getting Josh in the break for the sprints, but Pete crashed meaning Andy was our best bet for the finish, but he isn;t a renowned climber, and I tho k he did well to get 4th, and Ryan and Felix managed to get into the top 10, meaning we extend our lead in the Team and Andy does the same in the Individual rankings, with Jon who didn't ride today in second.
