Good prologue by Brändle there.

I don't know if we will another Mercxk anytime soon but yes the kid is certainly racking up some good results. Wasn't EBH going to be the next Mercxk amongst many others, will be interesting to see how Kwiatek develops and if he is managed properly, seen many other young riders peak early then stagnate. Gee old Lancaster can still rip out a good prologue these days

I can hardly see any monuments' podiums or 11th in TdF in Bakelants' palmares

18th in the Tour is not far off though . Either way the comparisions with Merckx are premature for now. But for sure Kwiatek is something special, Bakelants is very good also but not as good as Kwiatek |

As much as I'd love to see that, it's not a time for real all-rounders any more. Specialized riders with very strong secondary skills (as Indurain, Le Mond Wiggo) - yes. But no second Axels anymore
Kwiato will have to go one way or another sooner or later. A good punchy TTer with decent climbing would be my best guess. But yes - he's already impressive as buck.

I don't know, I kind of feel that as we are moving into a less-doped period there is some room for all-rounders who just have a big engine again. Sagan is the obvious example (okay maybe not a climber but he has the most complete skill set of pretty much any rider out there).

Such comparisons are premature always. It'll never happen, I think.
Merckx in these days wouldn't have been Merckx because it's too specialized these days. Merckx was just a unique athlete and he had the luck of being a cyclist in the days that you could be good all year through.
And he won Sanremo when he was 20. 6 times more in the following years. And 5 giros, all monuments, 5 TDF's.
Kwiatek is good.
But there's no comparison |

No, Bakelants said in a belgian newspaper that Kwiato can be the next Merckx.

Ehm, nice that somebody is drawing comparsions, but does Kwiatkowski won a major thing? Algarve and Strade Bianche are his biggest wins, while Merckx or even Sagan had like 50victories in that age, including much bigger wins. Kwiatek has 7 professional victories, 7!
But i admire him very much and i can see him becoming very strong rider and monument winner (LBL most likely).

You know there was tonnes of cheating back then too right? Just it wasn't really considered a problem. Even Merckx got caught, but no one remembers that... |

Kwiat's career (and Sagan's) could also blow out like Popovych's. Let's just wait and see for the next years. |

Kubys, you should get rid of that fixation on my posts about Sagan, i can recommend you good psychologist in Czech republic if you want.
And that post was mainly about Kwiatek -Merckx comparsion, Sagan was only there, because he was last that was widely discussed and compared to Eddie here on the forum around 2011-2012, when he was starting to become awesome, before you joined the forum.
Sorry that i think comparsion to Merckx with winner of Tour of Algarve is silly...

Big difference is that is wasn't organized in those days. Everyone just took the same stuff.
And doping is doping, okay. But they didn't do blood transfusions or EPO or things like that, it was "milder".
And also, even with doping, Merckx was an outstanding athlete, one of the very best ever. He finished races with minutes ahead of the 2nd rider.
Not even a pumped up Froome could achieve what Merckx achieved. He was an exceptional athlete. |

Of course I know that and of course I remember that, but it was pre-EPO which causes the greatest performance increase.
