Lions need another WR next to Megatron and Tate (fingers crossed that Sammy Watkins drops like crazy) and a few players to fixup the secondary.
That's my hope.

Finally it's here.
This is the train of thought that the Houston media has gone through these months, absolutely ridiculous
Bridgewater -> Manziel -> What if we don't trade Schaub? -> *trades Schaub* -> *signs Fitzpatrick* -> Clowney -> Bortles -> Trade Down -> Take the player, and trade that player -> WTF
baseballlover312, 06-03-14 : "Nuke Moscow...Don't worry Russia, we've got plenty of love to go around your cities"
Sarah Palin, 08-03-14 (CPAC, on Russian aggression) : "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a nuke is a good guy with a nuke"

Hope for a trade down to the later part of the first (though I see no signs of that), if we stay at one, Clowney is the only answer (even though I'm not thrilled about it). Then start praying to the football gods that somehow all three of Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater are taken before the 33rd pick comes up and we are "forced" to spend that pick on something useful.
Assuming we don't trade at all here is what I would hope for (notes, using what position they would play at Houston and taking guys based on their expected draft position according to CBSSports Draft Prospects):
1-1 | Jadeveon Clowney | OLB | South Carolina | 2-1 | Stephon Tuitt | DE | Notre Dame | 3-1 | Terrence Brooks | FS | Florida State | 4-1 | Daniel McCullers | DT | Tennessee | 4-35 | Aaron Murrray | QB | Georgia | 5-1 | Seantrel Henderson | OT | Miami (Fla.) | 6-1 | Logan Thomas | QB | Virginia Tech | 6-5 | Storm Johnson | RB | UCF | 6-35 | Louchiez Purifoy | CB | Florida | 7-1 | Shawn Jackson | ILB | Tulsa | 7-41 | Richie Leone | P | Houston |
Okay so I'll give an overview, first it is defense heavy. If you look at the best teams in the NFL right now, they are based on having either an elite defense or an elite QB. Seeing as the elite QB route isn't an option for us, I'm going defense.
1-1: Jadeveon Clowney - Okay he isn't a secret, physical gifts are ridiculous but I'm concerned about how he fits both on the team and in the scheme. Will he join the "Bulls on Parade" in our front 7? Also he really is suited for a 4-3 far more than a 3-4. I've only got him here because this is the assumed pick at this point, I'd much rather take Greg Robinson (OT-Auburn) or trade down.
2-1: Here is where people would likely freak out I'm not going QB. I just don't like any of the top guys, I don't think they will ever make it to that elite level needed. So I'm instead going to continue on defense, taking Tuitt, a large 3-4 DE to fill the hole left by Antonio Smith. He would be able to slide to the NT spot on nickle packages bringing Clowney down into the DE spot.
3-1: Terrence Brooks. Yep staying defense. The absence of Manning will be felt quickly if not filled. Brooks is a very rangy FS that will let Swearinger move into his more natural SS spot. His speed should allow for the hard hitting Swearinger to play more in the box like we used to when we had Pollard.
4-1: Daniel McCullers is a monster, 6'8" 350lbs and with our new defensive scheme needing a 2gap nose tackle he is a perfect fit. Fitness and durability are both strengths as he never had an injury in his 4 years at Tennessee which is rare for anyone his size.
4-35: Finally time to look offense, and take Aaron Murray from Georgia. QB had to be addressed eventually, and Murray put up great numbers against SEC competition. He was hurt his last season which has likely dropped his stock significantly and makes him viable as the true steal of this draft.
5-1: Seantrel Henderson is another massive man, 6'8" 340+lbs, again going into a new style of offense as well with a more power oriented run game rather than the zone blocking of Kubiak this kind of massive run blocking RT should fit great next to the also huge Brandon Brooks on the right side creating a very formidable run strength.
6-1: My most unique pick, I like Logan Thomas, he is a prototypical QB in size, and comes with great athleticism. As a bonus unlike Tebow who might be the most similar guy, he has openly said he would have no problem converting back to a TE which he was recruited as out of college. If he can be a great QB that works, if not he should still be a very solid TE.
6-5: Storm Johnson is an underrated RB in my opinion, UCF ran a pro-style system and needed a strong run game for Bortles to be able to work. He is a strong in the tackles runner that reminds me a lot of Ben Tate which I think was a very good counterpart to Foster. Will need some work, especially on ball security, but could be a dynamic bruising back.
6-35: I like taking a chance at this point getting Loucheiz Purifoy, who was part of a vaunted tandem of Corners at Florida that seemed to start getting crowded out of the spotlight as FSU became the dominate force in the state. He has great athleticism but showed very poorly in the combine. He is raw, but I think could turn into a good nickle corner in a year or two and maybe an outside corner in three or four.
7-1: This is where I go away from the draft projections and just take someone I like that isn't generally listed. Jackson isn't even listed on NFL.com or CBSSports, but he should be. Last season he recorded 124 tackles and a linebacker leading 5 interceptions. Of this in his only game against caliber competition (@ Oklahoma) he had 15 tackles and a sack. Showing that he wasn't just racking up the stats against the bad teams. He doesn't show the athleticism normally craved but his instincts seem to be unparalleled at the collegiate level, and I'll take my chances on that.
7-41: Mr. Irrelevant: With the last pick in the draft this is somewhat ceremonial and I'm taking a local talent, Houston Cougar, Richie Leone. With the salary cap not being a great friend to the Texans, Richie could allow for the very expensive Shane Lechler to be cut. While Lechler is great, he commands an enormous salary for a punter. Leone has a very powerful leg and can also perform Kickoff duties. He doesn't tend to be a factor in coverage (like any kicker/punter), though he is actually fast and can perform last line of defense duties well.

Was listening to some speculation earlier today that Pats might trade Mallett here to Houston--are these negotiations still going on?

I agree, but it sounds like there really wasn't any great deal sitting out there. My big interest is now gone in this draft, but will be curious to see which teams doom themselves taking the QBs of this draft since none of them are very good.

QBs start in the right order, Bortles is the best of the bunch, not sold he will be anything more than okay to good in the NFL, which won't carry a team and Jax has a long long ways to go.

Watkins to me is one of the overrated guys in this draft, this is why the Bill are bad, and will stay bad. He has below average size for an outside WR, and I think he will have a much harder time separating from the vastly better DBs in the NFL. He really needed to go to the right spot, and that isn't a bad team with a young QB.
EDIT: Great trade for Cleveland btw as there is still a very good chance that Manziel will still be there if that was their target all along (though I don't care for him).

I get the pick by Oakland. Mack is rated for this range, I don't see it. Played two games vs talent, had a good game in one, was non-existent in the other.
He might be good, but I wouldn't expect quick results as there will be a huge learning curve for him as he has to adjust from facing small conference guys to NFL guys.
EDIT: As a note, this is killer to the Falcons, who have now missed on both of the elite pass rushers in the draft, which was easily their biggest position of need.

I really like Matthews, but how much higher is his ceiling? He grew up knowing how to play tackle so there likely won't be a ton of improvement, but I think he may already be an all-pro caliber guy.

Mike Evans to me was the best WR in this draft, the guy is a monster in his ability to go up for the ball, and he works back to the QB better than anyone when a play breaks down. He won't have deep separation speed, but he will move the chains on an incredibly consistent basis.

Well that was a surprise, I love Gilbert though I think he is an elite corner, has the speed to cover anyone and great instincts. Like most corners though there will be a learning curve but he is going to be great.

For someone who don't rly know much about the NFL this looks like some really good trading by Cleveland. |

Why is there so much talk about this "Johnny Football"? Sounds like some massive overhype by the media? |

All QBs are vastly overhyped. Manziel has personality and the media loves it. He is flashy and exciting, and makes for fun watching, though not necessarily a great football team.

I understand, that makes sense as to why the media is talking about him before every pick but none of the teams are actually picking him |

It's not that he doesn't have potential, but the system has to revolve around him completely. Not easy to build on.

Wow.... wow... wow... huge overreach here... I think Barr will struggle greatly at the NFL level. I think he will only be average in athleticism and he relied on that at college, will need to find a developed skill set to be successful and I'm not sure he will ever get there.
