New Zealand Championship ITT
The Second Time Trial Championships in 3 days was in New Zealand were once again HTC don’t have a strong time trailer. Our rider for this race was Tom Scully a rider who was signed to be a domestique carrying water bottles and protecting team leaders.
Once again because our team only had one rider our rider set off towards the end. Although this time there weren’t any time checks so we couldn’t use that to our advantage. Tom Scully looked good throughout the course and managed to stop the clock in 7th place, 1 minute and 36 seconds down. This high placing wasn’t to last and soon Scully dropped down the leaderboard to 14th. It was a shame as the team was hoping we might get our first top ten.
The winner of the time trail was never in doubt. It seemed all Jesse Sergent of Trek needed to do was finish and he would take victory.

Australian Championship RR
The Australian Championship RR was the team’s first road race of the year. Once again we entered the race with one rider and once again the rider was Caleb Ewan. The goal for the race was to try and get into the break and hope it would stay away.
When the first attack was launched Ewan followed it and managed to get into the group.
The break grew to 12 riders and built up a decent lead.
The break built up a 4 minute lead but with 50 km to go Orica GreenEdge started to chase the break down.
It seemd like the break were going to be pulled back untill with 15km to go the power went out of GreenEdge's chase. Realising they had a chance of winning the break started increasing the pace. Caleb Ewean started to struggle and looked as if he was going to get dropped.
Mitchell Lovelock-Fay of Christina Watches – Onfone realised he had a chance and launched a powerful attack.
The favourites tried to attack across to the break but it was too late.
Levelock-Fay survived out in front to take the win.
Ewan despite struggling on the climb managed to finish 8th. It was a good result and the teams first top 10 of the seson.

New Zealand Championship RR
A few hours after the finish of the Australian Champs the riders were starting in New Zealand. Tom Scully HTC’s only rider knew due to his poor fitness and not great ability he only had one option, to get in the early break.
After 21km of nothing happening Shem Rodger of Node 4 attacked from the peloton.
Sensing that this was his opportunity Scully rode across the gap and joined Rodger.
The Peloton never chased down the breakaway which gave Tom Scully a massive chance to take the biggest win of his career.
With 15 km to go Rodger decided to attack despite the fact they had over an hour lead and Rodger has a better sprint than Scully. This caught Scully by surprise which gave Rodger a chance to create a big gap.
Scully pushed his hardest to catch up but he cracked with 7km left. His terrible fitness had caught up with him. In the end he did well to keep the gap as low as he did.
It was a sad day for the team but at least we are getting closer to our first victory. Scully can be proud of himself for the determination he showed to try and catch up. Although it wasn’t a win at least we got our first podium (although there were only two riders because the rest of the riders got eliminated)

Grand Prix de Marseille
The team had a clear plan going into the Grand Prix la Marseille. Lars Bak would get in the break. Vantomme would attack across to the break with 30km to go. Bak would then try to pace Vantomme for as long as he could and then leave him to try and take victory. While they were attacking Barry Markus would then sit in the pack with the rest of the team try to survive over the hills and be in with a shout if there’s a sprint finish.
The race started well for us when Lars Bak managed to attack and get in the early break.
Due to the break pulled back in fast Vantomme attacked across with 50km to go instead of 30km.
Vantomme was joined by Poux, De Weert, van Rensburg and Cousin of FDJ, Omega Pharma-Quickstep , Argos Shimano and Europecar.
It wasn’t long before the group of five joined up with Bak’s group. Unfortunately the peleton was now only a minute behind and they still had 43 km left.
The plan seemed to be going hopelessly when the peloton increased the pace and Markus began to struggle.
Meanwhile in the breakaway Lasse Norman Hansen attacked and pulled out a decent advantage.
Panicking Bak set a high pace with Vantomme on his wheel. Suddenly Kevin De Weert who was on Vantomme’s wheel cracked leaving a gap. Bak Capitalised and pulled away from the group with Vantomme just behind.
When Bak and Vantomme caught Hansen Bak turned around saw the Peloton just behind. He told Vantomme you had to attack now but Vantomme didn’t have the legs. Bak decided to attack himself and left Vantomme behind.
Nerz and Hushovd of BMC started pacing in the peloton and managed to create a gap.
Barry Markus was still in the group after the final climb although was struggling. He only had one team mate, Lawson Craddock who did a fantastic job of pulling him back to the front.
With 5km left Bak had a minutes lead and it actually looked like he was going to win.
It was a fantastic ride and a great way for the team to get its first win.
It got better though when Barry Markus Sprinted home for 6th place and Jacob Rathe appeared form nowhere to take 10th.

HTC-Highroad Newsletter – January
National Champs
Caleb Ewan and Tom Scully put in good performances at the Australian and New Zealand Championships. Caleb Ewan getting an 8th place in the road race and 34th in the Time trial. Tom Scully getting 2nd in the road race and 14th in the time trial.
Tour Down Under
Unfortunately we did not get accepted into the Santos Tour down under a World Tour race with a few good sprint stages which would have been good for our team. Although not going to the Tour down under meant the HTC riders could go on a training camp to improve fitness and so our lead out trains could have some good practice.
Training Camp
The long gap between the National Championships and the Gran Prix de Marseille meant that the team could go on a training camp which would give the team a chance to gain some valuable fitness and also practice their sprint trains.
As you can see from the photo we didn’t get the weather we were hoping for in the south of Spain but at least it gave the riders a chance the practice lead out trains when it’s raining.
Grand Prix de Marseille
The Grand Prix de Marseille was a fantastic success as the team took it’s first in and backed it up with 6th and 10th place. Massive congratulations to Lars Yitting Bak for tacking the teams first win and let’s hope it’s not the last.
HTC Rider of the Month
Lars Yitting Bak – This was an easy choice to make. Not only did Lars Yitting Bak provide HTC – Highroad with our first win he has given the team so much confidence to go on and get more good results.
UCI Word Tour Ranking – N/A
CQ Ranking – 12th
Continental Ranking – 1st
