New Zealand National Championships Road Race
182 km - flat
Jack Bauer is our only rider here, with a plan to ride aggressively to prevent mass sprint with Henderson and possibly isolate RadioShack riders, who are main favourites.
Favourites
Breakaway formed soon after start, consisting of 5 riders: A. Gate (SKT), T. Scully (RAL), M. Simpson (CCD), J. Oram (BLS) and J. Vennel (BPC).
As nobody in the peleton cared about chasing, Jack had to do it alone, not letting breakaway get lead of more than 3'20''.
His work made a split in the peleton on the third pass of the hill, with new group of 6 riders. Henderson was left back, but unfortunately Roulston and Sergent were still there. R. Rogers, R. Rodger and D. Barry completed the squad of this group. Henderson group soon gave up and they quickly lost to 20 minutes to leaders.
With 87 km to go, J. Sergent attacked on downhill, but he was brought back to the group.
The two groups have merged with 70 kms to go.
The last 15 km were really chaotic and gull of attacks. First attempt was made by Sergent, Gate and Vennel, with Bauer and Roulston joining.
Then Roulston tried a solo attack.
When riders reached the last hill, Jack Bauer made his move!
With 9 km to go, 4 riders were leading: Bauer, Roulston, Rogers and Vennel with 30 seconds lead over the chase.
The groups merged, and then Roulston attempted another attack! By that moment Jack Bauer was unfortunately out of gas and he was out of the competition.
Roulston entered the last km ahead of Rogers with a small advantage over the chase.
And he managed to win! Jack Bauer finished 9th.

Only 12 riders finished the race, with rest out of time limit. As we predicted RadioShack won with smart tactics - Bauer wasn't able to counter every move and keep energy for the finish. Now it's time for some proper racing, with TDU coming soon!
Indeed, one thing is stupid PCM mechanic in races with that few riders (in my test ride when Bauer attacked, Henderson chased hard, while without Bauer in breakaway nobody chased and gap got to 30 minutes quickly). Also, if I had had more riders, I would have been able to chase with one and then attack with another, similarly to what RSLT did here, but they didn't chase, just attacked enough times to burn Bauer.

That's because Bauer is race favourite and when you have only one rider who happens to be favourite in race where other favourites' teams have small amount of riders it's a no win situation. I played NZL RR with Radioshack and sent Bennett in the breakaway, because he instead of Roulston and Sergent wasn't favourite, so nobody chased. Guess how it ended - peloton didn't make it in the time limit.

Unlucky there. Are you going to send a strong team to the TDU?
Millar and Haas (currently in 3 form) will lead, Von Hoff will target sprints and Morton will aim for KoM jersey. The rest of the team are Fernandez, Dekker and Dennis (he's out of form, so will be just a domestique).
First TDU report will come today. Meanwhile, a small quiz: which place did my best rider get in the 1st stage of TDU?
David Millar and Nathan Haas will co-lead in season's first World Tour race. Von Hoff should bring us at least some podiums, maybe even stage wins, while Lachlan Morton will go to breaks and target KoM jersey.
GC Contenders
On paper, the main favourites of the race are the Italian trio: Diego Ulissi, Moreno Moser and Rinaldo Nocentini. Other big names are Alexandr Kolobnev and Gianni Meersmann. Australian Orica-GreenEdge team will defeinitely also be dangerous, with Brett Lancaster designated as their leader. Though, as it's the first race of the season, most riders are out of form, so a surprise winner is also possible.

Favourites
It's time to start the season 2013 in cycling!
Today's BoTD was formed by Lachlan Morton, Matthew Hayman (Sky), and David Boucher (FDJ).
Lachlan Morton won the KoM sprint and he will ride in the Mountain jersey tomorrow.
The biggest advantage of the break was 6 minutes, but AG2R soon after KoM started to chase.
All the 3 intermediate sprints were won by Hayman ahead of Boucher and Morton.
With 25 km to go, BMC, OPQS and Orica set tempo in the peleton and distance to break was already down to 1'50''.
The break still had 50 seconds with 12 km left, but the peleton was chasing really hard.
Lachlan Morton stayed in front for the longest, but he was also caught in the final 5 km.
On a tricky descent there was a crash in the peleton. Two of Morton's breakaway companions were hurt: Hayman and Boucher, as well as William Bonnet (FDJ) and Matthew Lloyd (Lampre). Unfortunately Lloyd had to abandon from his home race with a fractured hip.
With 3 km to go, trains were formed by BMC, OPQS, Orica and Garmin, with Millar and Fernández leading out Von Hoff.
OPQS leadout was definitely the strongest, as Nikolas Maes entered the last km in front ahead of Gianni Meersmann.
Meersman didn't waste his teammates' work and won ahead of Thor Hushovd and Steele Von Hoff, who finished third again. David Millar finished right behind him.

Thanks to the bonus seconds Lachlan Morton is also leading the young classification.

Stage 2 - Mount Barker - Rostrevor - 116 km - hilly
Favourites
The breakaway was formed by M. Belkov (Katusha), F. Beppu (Orica), M. Keizer (Vacansoleil) and F. Willems (Lotto). Their biggest advantage was about 4 minutes.
With 27 km to go, AG2R was leading the chase with help from Rohan Dennis and the gap was already down to 2'15''.
Then Belkov tried a solo attack, but he was caught by his companions.
Soon he tried again, this time more effectively, as he made a small gap.
Damiano Caruso tried to surprise the other GC contenders with an early attack before the Corkscrew climb, but his move was unsuccessful.
With 10 km to go, only Belkov was still in front of the chasing peleton.
On the Corkscrew, Nathan Haas attacked! He passed Belkov and built a gap between him and peleton.
On top, he was 20 seconds ahead of Belkov, who had another 20 seconds advantage ahead of peleton. Things looked really promising!
OPQS was desperately chasing downhill to defend Meersmann's leader jersey, creating several splits in the peleton, but they weren't able to reduce the gap.
With 2 km to go, Nathan had this in his pocket as he still had over 40 seconds advantage over the pack.
And he wins! The first Garmin victory of the season also makes him the main favourite to win GC aswell, as he becomes a new race leader.
Maxim Belkov was really brave today, but he got caught within the last km.
The sprint was really chaotic, in the end OPQS failed tactically as Pineau finished second ahead of Meersmann and reduced his time bonus. Millar got 4th and Von Hoff 6th. Steele was able to get another podium here, but we decided not to leadout him to maximize the gap, which in the end was 47 seconds.
Having +5 daily form was really beneficial there
Also if OPQS had any decent downhill helpers, they could reduce the gap, but lack of them was surely another reason. Now it will probably be a hard time defending the jersey, I hope to bring it to Adelaide

Lachlan Morton attacked right from the start to grab the early KoM points.
And he got 10 points, becoming the KoM classification leader again.
There were several break attempts in the initial kilometres, but all the escapees, including Morton, were caught. The breakaway which finally was allowed, consisted of Bob Jungels (RSLT) and Gaëtan Bille (Lotto).
They were later joined by Dominik Nerz (BMC). Throughout the following kilometres they got almost 5 minutes advantage, but all were at least 3 minutes down in GC, so they weren't a big threat for Nathan Haas.
The chase was lead by Cannondale and Lampre. It looked clear that Ullisi and Moser may try something today.
Within the last 40 km, there were many attacks from the peleton. First one was done by Paul Martens (Belkin), Xavier Florencio (Katusha) and Anthony Geslin (FDJ).
With 20 km to go, Andrey Amador (Movistar) attacked.
Shortly after him, there was a major move by Diego Ullisi, Moreno Moser, Ion Izagirre and Romain Bardet.
Gianni Meersmann, Alexandr Kolobnev and Rinaldo Nocentini also attacked.
1'30'' behind the original breakaway a group of 12 dangerous riders was formed, so we had to chase them. Together with Saxo-Tinkoff riders, Rohan Dennis and Thomas Dekker managed to catch them all within the last 10 km.
Then Nocentini tried another attack and he managed to get 15 seconds advantage over the pack. This time we had to rely on other groups as all our riders were tired by previous chasing.
The breakaway entered the last km and it looked like Nerz may outsprint Jungels and Bille!
And he wins! A great win for a young German!
Nocentini was caught in the last km, with Jan Bakelants finishing in front of the peleton.
Bakelants leads the group ahead of Nocentini and Moser. Most importantly, there are no gaps within peleton, so there are no GC changes today.

Lachlan Morton again joined today's breakaway together with P. Longo Borghini (Cannondale), Xavier Florencio (Katusha) and Stef Clement (Belkin). They got up to 6 minutes advantage.
And he won the KoM sprint. Surprisingly, nobody did even try to attack when he set a strong tempo during the climb.
With about 15 km to go, the breakaway was almost caught, but more important events took place in the back of peleton, where a major crash happened. 15 riders were involved, including Hushovd, Bardet and Meersmann, who lost their chances in GC and today's sprint.
With 5 km to go, trains were set by Vacansoleil and Garmin, but Von Hoff was blocked, which made problems for Millar and Fernández to perform a successful leadout.
Vacansoleil's leadout for Markus was almost perfect today. Steele managed to get back on Koldo's wheel but will he have enough power to finish?
Because of broadcast problems we don't have the exact finish moment on photo, but Markus won easily ahead of Eisel. Surprisingly Koldo got 3rd just ahead of Steele. Another decent result, but we are still missing a sprint victory.

Stage 4 - McLaren Vale - Old Willunga Hill - 152 km - hilly
Favourites
There were 7 riders in today's breakaway: P. Urtasun (EUS), A. Lutsenko (AST), A. Palini (LAM), M. Belkov (KAT), A. Geslin (FDJ), F. De Greef (LTB) and I. Stanndard (SKY). They got up to 5 minutes advantage.
With 30 km to go, the lead was down to 1'40''. Then Paul Martens (Belkin) and Sergio Paulinho (Saxo) attacked on flat before the first Old Willunga pass, but they were caught fast.
The leading group started the first climb with a small advantage over the peleton, from which a few riders attacked.
On top, Maxim Belkov led the race alone 20 seconds ahead of the chase.
The chase was formed by original breakaway riders joined by Bakelants, Amador and Martens. They had 1 minute advantage over the peleton.
The chase was led by Cannondale. Haas only had Millar left to help him, so we relied on the other teams to catch the front group.
And they were caught with 7 km to go.
Then Stannard, De Greef and Jeannesson launched another attack and got about 30 seconds over the peleton when they arrived to the last climb of Old Willunga Hill.
David Millar paced for Nathan on the climb.
Ullisi, Meersmann and Kesiakoff tried to attack, but Millar's tempo was too high to let them escape.
Ian Stannard entered the last km as leader, will he get caught by the group?
Millar did a great job leading out Haas, who was fighting for stage victory!
Moreno Moser wins the queen stage of TDU! Haas finishes 4th with no time gap, which means he'll be the GC winner! Thanks to his high stage positions as leadout man, David Millar will also get 4th GC.
It's more Millar who is really strong here. So far he's doing everything, leading out sprinters, protecting Haas, pacing for him uphill, his +5 form on Willunga stage was probably crucial, as I managed to close all the gaps thanks to his hard work.
