Stage 5: Juana Koslay - La Carolina

The 5th stage is 164.4 km long with a steep ascent to the mountain sprint at km 145.

As in the gc the favorites of this tour and hardest opponents for Ivone Ragnoli are only 3 seconds up to 1 minute 41 seconds behind, the tactics for Scuderia Mercatone Due is clear: just stay in front and don't let them slip away. So we will have to watch especially the good climbers as Vasil Kiryienka, Dario Cataldo, Vladimir Gusev, Dominik Nerz, Blel Kadri and Kanstantsin Siutsou and try to make it to the finish together with them. That sounds easy, but it is clear that it will be more than difficult.

Here you can see Ivone in his beautiful leader shirt. Today the whole team will work for him and try to defend his position.

Soon after the start there is an attack and some riders succeed to get away. They are all way back in the gc and so nobody reacts. Except Isacco Reggianini, who still wants to show that he can do better than in the first stage: he accelerates and joins the breakaway. There now are

The breakaway can build up a lead of 6 minutes, until the peloton rises the pace and closes in again.

At the bottom of the sloop to the mountain sprint, the peloton is only 2 minutes behind the breakaway. It is obvious, that the strong climbers will try to attack in this ascent. Ragnoli and Donà have saved energy until now and will try to follow the expected attacks. Reggianini is 2 minutes ahead and will be able to help, when Ragnoli and Donà close in.

In the ascent, Donà rises the pace, to make it more difficult for the others to get away. Reggianini wants to show what he has got and attacks. There are only 24 km to the finish, and he is still 2 minutes ahead. Maybe he could achieve what he has missed in the first stage?

With only 4 km to the mountain sprint, the real fight begins: Vasil Kiryienka attacks and pulls away.

The other climbers try to follow and the peloton falls apart. Vasil Kiryienka reaches the crest first with a lead of almost 2 minutes and only 15 km to go. Today he is the one with the real good legs! It is obvious that he will win.

Reggianini is in the 3rd chasing group almost 3 minutes behind. I tell him to sit back in his group and wait for Ragnoli, then help him.

Ragnoli, together with Donà and Ginanni (!), is in the 5th chasing group, nearly 4 minutes behind Kiryienka, but only 50 seconds behind the group with Reggianini. The sad thing is, that in the groups 2 and 3 there are Cataldo and Nerz. We have to catch them to defend Ragnoli's position!

Ragnoli, Ginanni and Donà relay with full power. Meanwhile the group with Reggianini catches the group with Cataldo and Gusev. So now there is only Kiryienka in front, then the 1st chasing group with Reggianini (who doesn't help) and the second chasing group with Ragnoli who desperately try to contain the damage.

9 km to the finish, they are still 44 seconds behind the group with Reggianini

5 km to the finish they are 26 seconds back, but still closing in.

And on the final straight they catch the group with Cataldo and Nerz in the sprint! That was really tight!

So Ragnoli loses the lead to Kiryienka. But he saves the 2nd position in gc. And he is still leader in the mountain classification and the young rider classification. That was a strong performance of Scuderia Mercatone Due!

Stage 6: Quines - Mirador des Sol

Today we have a 163.5 km hilly stage with a steep ascent to the finish. Ivone Ragnoli wears his mountain shirt today.

As you know in GC we have Stephen Cummings only 15 seconds behind Ragnoli and in the young rider classification Dominik Nerz is second with 39 arrears.

Therefore our tactic is clear: we have to stay with Cummings, Cataldo and Nerz and must not let escape any of the favourites.

Right after the start there are some attacks. Our riders just stay in the peloton and protect Ragnoli.

Soon a Breakaway forms with 8 riders: Aleksandr Kuschynski, Josué Moyano, Xabier Zandio, Shinichi Fukushima, Tiziano Dall'Antonia, Luke Durbridge Anthony Delaplace and Jaime Castañeda. They are all back in the gc by 8 and more minutes and therefore no danger for the leaders.

At the mountain sprint the breakaway is 4'36" in advance. The peloton still does not react, lets them gain a lead of up to 7 minutes and then starts to reel them back. And Scuderia Mercatone Due you see here in control of the peloton, saving energy.

With 50 km to the finish, team BCM raises the pace and starts chasing at high speed. It seems that they want to try to lead Dominik Nerz in position for an attack to glory. Scuderia Mercatone Due still behind, in front of the peloton and on alert.

At the beginning of the final ascent, 10 km to the finish, the peloton is only 4'50" behind the breakaway. Now the attacks begin. The riders of Scuderia Mercatone Due follow these attacks and climb with full power. Though they cannot hold on Nerz, Ragnoli, Donà and Reggianini manage to follow the other dangerous opponents.

The peloton scatters and everybody goes just as fast as he can.

At the finishing line, our climbers are in the group with Stephen Cummings, Dario Cataldo and Vasil Kiryienka. Only Dominik Nerz arrives 11 seconds ahead. So Ivone Ragnoli is still second in gc and keeps his mountain shirt and young rider shirt.

Stage 7: San Luis – Juana Koslay

This final stage of the Tour de San Luis is a 150.5 km flat stage with one mountain sprint after 7 km and two sprints on the way. As Ragnoli is still on 2nd position in gc with still 15 seconds in front of Stephen Cummings (and a bit more on Dario Cataldo and Dominik Nerz), our tactic will be the same as yesterday: just follow those opponents and arrive with the pack.

Because there is the last mountain sprint of this tour after 7 km, we also want to make sure, that Vasil Kiryienka doesn’t win that one to protect the mountain shirt of Ragnoli.

So when the attacks begin after the start, I send Reggianini and Marzocchi to follow and to show the colors of the team. Reggianini wants (and is ordered to win) some mountain points. Marzocchi just wants to show something and maybe will win the sprints on the way. The rest of the team has to help and work to get Ragnoli to the finish line together with the bunch and not let anybody of the direct opponents slip away.

So there forms a breakaway with Porrozzi Marzocchi, Isacco Reggianini, Adrián Ezequiel Richeze, Jaime Castañeda and Marco Corti. Reggianini wins the mountain sprint. And Marzocchi wins the first sprint.

The breakaway raises the lead up to 6 minutes, until the peloton reacts. Marzocchi also wins the second sprint, though this time nobody else tries to get these points.

At 50 km to the finish, the lead is still 3’15”. At 36 km to the finish, it is still 2’30” and our riders have quite a lot of energy left. So Marzocchi and Reggianini want to try if they could make it and speed up. At 14 km to the finish, the lead is 1’12”, but now Marzocchi and Reggianini get tired.

They fight to hold the lead, but at 4 km to the finish they get reeled in. Anyway: they showed a good performance.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team prepares for the final sprint. As the peloton now rides at high speed for a long time, only Ginanni, Ragnoli and Donà can stay in front and form a sprinttrain. Iacobucci can’t hold on and fells back

When the sprint finally starts, Ginanni, Ragnoli and Donà do well, but they are not really sprinters and finish 13, 19 and 21.

But who cares: it is enough to secure Ragnoli’s 2nd position in gc and his win in the young rider classification and mountain classification, what impresses the sponsor and keeps him happy. Furthermore it provides Ragnoli 88 points and the lead in the continental ranking!

After the last stage of San Luis, I sent the team with a bus to the airport. I had to check everything and discuss the bill with our hotel manager, make the last payments and so on. Afterwards I took a taxi, to follow the team to the airport.

Unfortunately, my taxi driver was somehow lazy and I missed my plane! But now there were no other flights to Italy or they were already fully booked. The clerk at the airport helped me and found a solution: I booked a flight to Rio and from there to Italy. That's why I had to stay four days in Rio, before I could come back. What a bad luck. Wink

Meanwhile the team had started the training camp in Como to prepare for pour next races: the Volta ao Algarve from 13.02. to 16.02.2013, and - at the last day of the Volta simultaneous , the Trofeo Laigueglia. This would be our first race with a sponsor objective. So we will have our best riders to start there.

Especially Francesco Ginanni will start at Trofeo Laigueglia. He is eager to do so and to show what he's got. As he told me, he had won this race two times already: in 2009 and 2010! Let's hope he can do it again!

The Volta ao Algarve will be another test for some of our youngsters. I have nominated Tony Flaborea, Artemio Montorfano, Giudo Iacobucci, Adalberto Pavarese, Ivone Ragnoli, Raffeale Nista, Gianguglielmo Giordani and Adrian Guerrisi. Except for Iacobucci and Ragnoli, it will be the first race at all. I'm wondering what they will show.

Volta ao Algarve

Stage1: Faro - Albufeira

The first stage over 205.7 km is merely flat. There is a nervous beginning with several attacks, that do not succeed. After 10 km things calm down and Gonçalo Amado attacks. Our Adrian Guerrisi follows and they manage to get away. Later also Eduard Prades follows. Those three riders steadily increase their lead up to 9 minutes.

Guerrisi is not a sprinter, so he is third at both sprints. But he is the best climber of the breakaway and wins the mountain sprint and therefore will wear the mountain shirt tomorrow!

After halftime, the teams of the strong sprinters, Orica - GreenEdge, Sky Procycling and Katusha Team, start chasing.

The breakaway is slowly reeled back. 50 km to the finish, their lead is 3 minutes. At 35 km to the finish it is 2 minutes.

So I order Guerrisi to relax and save energy for the finish (remember Reggianini at the first stage in San Luis!). So he is caught at 20 km to the finish and manages to stay in the peloton, although the speed now is very high.

At the 5 km mark we have build up our sprinttrain. But the guys are almost done due to the high pace.

In the sprint they do well, but they cannot hold on to the stronger sprinters, though Flaborea shows his class and finishes 15th. A good result for him in his first race and concerning that he is not in good shape!

The second stage is 194.2 km with two mountain sprints and two intermediate sprints. Guerrisi wears his mountain shirt today and wants to defend it.

Because of the two mountain sprints today, I allow Guerrisi to attack and also tell Ragnoli to try to get into the breakaway. As he is a good climber, he might win those mountain sprints. But the Peloton doesn't let them go.

After 15 km an attack of Pablo Urtasun succeeds. Preben Van Hecke and Anders Lund follow. They can break away and win the first intermediate sprint with a lead of almost 3 minutes to the peloton.

At the first mountain sprint the breakaway is still more than 3 minutes ahead. But in the ascent to the second mountain sprint, the peloton closes in. Ragnoli and Guerrisi try it again and raise their rhythm, but only Ragnoli can break away and becomes second in this mountain sprint.

Although he relaxes afterwards, he finds himself in the breakaway now. So I tell him to save energy and just hold on.

The lead of the breakaway is still around 3 minutes and they make it easily to the second intermediate sprint, where Ragnoli is third. Now the peloton starts to chase and closes in.

At 30 km to the finish, Ragnoli and Pablo Urtasun are reeled back. Only Van Hecke stays in front for some more kilometers. The pace of the peloton now is so high, that some riders can't follow anymore.

Our men are working hard to hold on, but they use a lot of energy. With 10 km to go, Guerrisi, Giordani and Ragnoli are on their limit and cannot hold on to the front of the peloton.

At 5 km to the finish, only Nista and Flaborea have got some power left. At 3 km to the end, Guerrisi loses contact with the peloton and falls back. What a pity for him!

At the end, only Nista and Flaborea have the power to sprint, but they are way back and reach only position 28 and 49. It was just too hard today for Scuderia Mercatone Due.

Because of the upcoming and for our sponsor important Trofeo Laigueglia, I travelled back to Italy. Then with our other team I went to Laigueglia to prepare for the race.

Meanwhile Fabio Reggianini, my assistant manager, coached our riders at Volta ao Algarve. Here is his report about the final two stages:


Stage 3: Portimão - Alto do Malhão

This 193.8 km hilly stage would be tough for our riders, because we had left the strong climbers at home for the Trofeo Laigueglia.

The attacks at the beginning didn't really succeed. The breakaways got reeled back after a short time. As the peloton came to the first sloop to the mountain sprint, our riders were in front with Ragnoli in his young rider shirt eager to fight for this shirt and maybe the mountain shirt.

At 6 km to the mountain sprint, Ragnoli and Guerrisi accelerated and easily won those points.

Then Bartosz Huzarski, Karsten Kroon and Pieter Jacobs attacked and pulled away. A bit later also Alejandro Marque Porto and Jack Bauer joined the breakaway. They then maintained a lead up to 4'35" and won both intermediate sprints and the second mountain sprint. So this was it for Ragnoli: he would not be able to win the mountain shirt anymore.

In the second half of the race, our riders had more and more trouble to stay in the peloton. The pace was high and Pavarese was the first who couldn't follow anymore. Just a few kilometers before the second mountain sprint he lost contact.

On the last 50 km, also Montorfano, Nista, Giordani, Iacobucci and Guerrisi one after the other fell out of the peloton, as many other riders did too: this hilly roads and the high pace were just too much. Only Flaborea and Ragnoli managed to stay in front with the peloton.

20 km to the finish, the breakaway was reeled in and now David Millar and Roman Kreuziger attacked.

The peloton again raised the already high speed and a few km later Daniel Moreno also attacked and pulled away. At the 5 km mark, Roman Kreuziger was already reeled back and David Millar and Daniel Moreno were only 28 seconds in front of the chasing peloton.

Now everybody just gave what he had left. Flaborea was still doing very well: he reached the last km in the fourth chasing group and close to the lead, while Ragnoli was 30 seconds back in the next chasing group.

But both of them were almost done and could not sprint anymore. Though Flaborea showed a very strong effort and finished in 14th position. Despite of this good performance of Ragnoli and Flaborea, we had no victory: Ragnoli was only second in the mountain classification, two points behind Preben Van Hecke, and Flaborea ended up second in the young rider classification, 25" behind Andrew Talansky.

stage 4: Castro Marim - Tavira

This last stage is a 34.8 km ITT. There is not much to tell about it: our riders are not bad in TT, but they are not the best and so they all lost some time. Tony Flaborea fell back from 10th to 16th position in gc. At least he could hold his second position in the young rider classification, while Ragnoli fell back from 5th to 7th.

Trofeo Laiguelia is a 195 km hilly race. As this race is the first with an sponsor objective (top 10), I ordered our best climbers and Ginanni to Laiguelia: Francesco Ginanni has won this race two times already and now is our favorite.

He knows everything about the course and explained to the team what is important here. We discussed, that we want to get one rider in a breakaway if possible, just in case the breakaway gets through. With the rest of the team we will stay in front of the peloton until the last slope. There we will attack and try to make it to the finish first.

Now let's see whether theory works in practice: After the start, first Possoni attacks but can’t break away. Then things work out fine, as Reggianini follows an attack of Anthony Ravard and makes it in the early breakaway together with Anthony Ravard and Oleksandr Polivoda.

The peloton let’s them go and so they enlarge their lead up to 8’35” at the second hill. Then the peloton starts chasing and slowly reels them back.

Because of the high pace, the peloton scatters and in the end there are only 88 riders left in the peloton and the others fallen back into 14 groups arrear.

Until the last big slope, the breakaway has only left a lead of 1’49”.

Reggianini doesn’t want to give in. He tries hard to hold the lead and in this forth long sloop he raises his rhythm and goes at almost full speed. He breaks away from the others and on the crest he has an advantage of 2’05” again to the peloton. With the following downhill section and only 30 km to the finish, he might make it.

But the peloton is too strong and too fast: 20 km later they reel him in.

Now with only 10 km to go I order Di Gregorio to the front as trailer and the others to build a train and to follow him. Our men are in good shape and dictate the pace. Especially Ginanni has been protected all the way and feels still fresh and powerfull.

They are still in front as it goes to the second last little slope 7 km to the finish. Now as planned they accelerate and 1 km later, our climbers attack. Our sprinters follow and another km later they attack too. That way, Ginanni and Marzocchi gain a lead of 30” for the last 3 km. They are fast and still strong and start their sprint way in front of the others. Only Alexandr Kolobnev seems to be closing in. But he cannot reach Ginanni.

Francesco Ginanni stays in front and wins with a lead of 21 seconds! That is a hattrick: his third win at Trofeo Laiguelia!

Behind Ginanni is a hard fight for 2nd position. Alexandr Kolobnev closes in to Marzocchi. But Marzochi is strong enough to stay in front and finish second!

Also the rest of the team is doing very well: Savastone, Di Gregorio and Acevedo finish 12, 13 and 14, Possoni is 16. This is a fantastic triumph for Scuderia Mercantone Due and makes our sponsor really happy. And we get another front-page and lot of precious publicity as well.

Thanks. Yes we all are very happy and hade a great party! Ginanni had to give some interviews and I got a pecious bottle of wine from the sponsor.

Right the next day Ginanni and the other teammembers for the Tour of Langkawi left for Malaysia. My assistant manager will coach them there. He has already sent me the reports of the two first stages. But I will post them alltogether when the tour is over.

First I will go to our next reces here in Europe and post what will happen there.

Beverbeek Classic

Today we have this 163.6 km flat race in Belgium. It is cold and rainy. We expect a fast race with a bunch sprint

We don't have the best sprinters of the field, but we hope we can get a top 10 result thanks to a good teamwork. Therefore we want to stay in the peloton and conserve energy for the final sprint.

There is a very nervous beginning of the race with many attacks and counterattacks. Also Nista wants to give it a try and follows one of these attacks, but he doesn't succeed. Same situation later with Acevedo: the peloton always reacts quickly, accelerates and reels back the attackers almost immediately.

But after 30 km, it looks like the leading riders don't want to chase everybody anymore: three riders manage to break away. Lars Van der Haar, Luke Grivell-Mellor and Fabio Polazzi build a breakaway with a lead of up to 4 minutes in the middle of the race

Then the peloton starts to chase hard and slowly reels them back. With 40 km to go, the pace in the peloton is so high, that our riders almost get to their limits.

At 15 km to the finish, the breakaway is only 20" in front and our team forms a sprint train. Due to the high speed, none of our riders has left full power. But Acevedo is still strong and pulls the train to the front. And Pavarese has good legs today, so he is taking the role of the sprinter at the end of the train.

At the 10 km mark, the breakaway is reeled back in. Now some riders try a last attack, but nobody can really break away. Our sprint train is lined up and in good position.

At 6 km to go, Acevedo has to go at full speed, to hold the front. But he and Donà are out of power and leave the train one kilometer later. The good flat-riders now start overtaking. So I order Nista to attack to gain some ground and at 3 km to the finish, our first sprinter, Montorfano, starts sprinting. After him it is Iacobucci's turn and at 2 km all except Pavarese sprint, to catch up with the leading Benoit Drujon, Davy Commeyne, Kevin Peeters and Mathieu Drujon.

The wind blows from the front and Pavarese waits with his attack, until Montorfano and Flaborea are at full speed and close to the opponents. Then Pavarese accelerates, overtakes his teammates and closes the gap to the lead. And with his last energy he can ride up to second position!

With Falborea on 6th and Montrofano on 11th, we even win the team classification!

Yes, he surprised me. But he had good legs and that makes the difference, I think.

Besides I maybe have to work on my timing or try to catch the wheel of another sprinter next time.

GP di Lugano

From Belgium we traveled to Switzerland to the GP di Lugano, which took place the next day. This race is a 173.3 km hilly criterium

We don't have a race the next few days. So we will try an aggressive tactic: I want always one of our riders in front and playing the locomotive, pulling at a high pace, while the others protect our best climbers. So we want to eliminate as many opponents as possible and prevent any breakaways.

It works out as planned: the first and only breakaway is reeled back in the first long climb. From then on, our riders dominate the pace and the peloton.

Giordani and Nista lead first until they are quite worn out. After 50 km only 74 riders are left in the peloton.

Later on Lunini and Savastano take the lead. As Ragnoli is in bad shape today and doesn't feel he can fight for the win in the end, he also takes relays and helps to keep the pace up.

So with 50 km to the finish, only 47 riders have left in front with our best climbers Acevedo and Possoni still in good shape. Also Donà reports that he feels good today.

Then with 32 km to the finish, in the last long climb, Diego Ulissi attacks and breaks away.

Only Fabricio Donà has the power to follow behind and then also Simon Spilak can break away and catch up with Donà. At 22 km to the finish, these two are 20" behind Ulissi and 47" in front of the peloton. As Donà doesn't have much energy left, he cannot attack or relay and just hangs on the wheel of Spilak

Now the Peloton chases hard and in the next climb Matteo Rabottini attacks and many more riders fall back: only 27 remain in the peloton with Acevedo and Possoni among them. But they are too tired to attack and just try to stay with the bunch.

Meanwhile Spilak has pulled away from Donà. Instead Rabottini closes in and - with 10 km left to the finish - reaches him. So Donà now tries to follow Rabottini, 43" behind Spilak and Ulissi and 34" in front of the Peloton.

Then Franco Pellizotti breaks away from the Peloton and joins the chasing group with Donà. That is the way it goes to the sprint. None of our riders has left energy to change a thing now: Spilak and Ulissi will fight for the win. Rabottini, Pellizotti and Donà will sprint for third position.

But Donà cannot overtake Pellizotti and finally is happy to not lose his 5th position to Alexandr Kolobnev.
