Arguably, less annoying twists and turns then Stage 12. However, instead of going straight on the ASO decided they'd love to take a detour where the peloton chuck a leftie, followed by a large sweeping right hander (roughly in the shape of a V), and then finally left at an oblique roundabout.
All for the sakes of what? A kilometre at best? |

Tell Goss to go straight, he might win then

Well, put my bet on Greipel, hopes he is okay and can bring some money to me. *Strong-belief-in-God-mode ON*

Why the hell wouldn't they just keep the straight line with the roundabout? Better to have 3 difficult turns rather than a simple one, I guess

It might be so they head into the roundabout at slower speeds, to reduce crashes/severity of injury in the more than likely crash.

It might be. But I think a 90° turn is worse than a roundabout.

Usually in a turn like that, the peloton slows a lot to get around. People might actually come to a stand still and surely positioning will be important to stay ahead but in a roundabout, usually the peloton hardly slows at all, while the road basically narrows and forces riders to cut through the middle etc. which is going to cause more serious damage in the event of a crash usually because of the higher speeds. It depends how that corner is taken for sure. It could end up badly.
Edit: I expect it to be somewhat like a descent. Maybe 2 or 3 wide instead of 1 wide.

Probably what they were thinking, still that's like "hey, we have a 30% chance of a severe crash at that roundabout, let's stuff some corners in so we have a 80% chance of a possibly less severe crash!".

There could be a pothole for all we know, in which case, so close to the finish, it would be basically mandatory to avoid that road

Guys, no need discussing when there's Google Maps...
So whoever decided that's a good shape for a roundabout...
Not the slightest chance of getting around that with 60km/h.
The detour is barely a 2-lane road though...and that corner looks scary as well.
(it's the one with the attention sign)

that roundabout?!
and what about the 90 degree left just before
and come on, for the sake of an extra 100m, just end the stage 1km earlier (note the 2km to go at the far left of that picture) |

Kittel to win, Sagan 2nd or 3rd, that is enough.

I also looked at the last few kms on Google Maps, and I must say that I think the deroute does make some sense. An asymmetrical like that was bound to create havoc with the positioning going on.
And both of the turns are bends rather than angles, which usually cause more crashes.
Putting the finish line 1 km earlier would have been a safer choice though. |

Why not have the riders sprint at night under sudden gun fire too?
There's a fine line between "psychotherapist" and "psycho the rapist"

Well, if we Germans invade France in time, you can look forward to July 21st.

From looking at the stage winners so far I'd say they had allready invaded.

Lampre you be confusing me at the moment, a great deal at that too. The breakaway of the day has formed containing:
Yohann Gene of Europcar, Ruben Perez Moreno of Euskaltel-Euskadi, Luis Maté of Cofidis, Przemyslaw Niemiec of Lampre-Merida, Kris Boeckmans of Vacansoleil-DCM, and Cyril Lemoine of Sojasun.
