Qatar Optics - Duvel 2021: Story Completed

Well already half of the content in this thread relates to this... ummm... "Koldarman" (?) I keep hearing about, whoever that is. Classic Jesley Smile

And yeah, Qatar is of course Asian. What else would it be - Europe, Oceania..?

Anyway, back to what I meant to type in the first place: I love stories which reach into the future. And, Qatar... great, something totally new!

Al Ghanin looks like a solid home-grown talent too.

That'll end, just wanted my question to be answered and that didn't happen Pfft

And I love stories in the future as well...

Team is off to a great start, especially in Tour of South China!

Cheers Buddy, the first stage will be up by midday. lets hope the team can put the 'cat amongst pigeons'!

@Jesleyh- I did answer it in a post---he has Mo.78 and that's about it with other stats 72-75. END. Pfft

Yes, bad worded by me, I meant that's why I used multiple posts for it, instead of 1.

Anyway, now, even more posts about him, lets just stop it Pfft

And again, great results for the team!

Team Goals:

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/Favourites22222222_zpsc443387d.jpg

Sure, the race goals aren't the most challenging, but there is a psychological philosophy behind the race goals: 'with few goals for the teams there is little pressure'.

STAGE 1: Barzan Towers- Doha Golf Club 143.3 KM'S

Stage Favourites:
***Kummer(SAS) **Colbrelli(KAT) **Arashiro(AGS)

The first stage will show who the men are to beat in the sprints. German Kummer is favourite, he won multiple times in San Luis, but can he win without key leadout men Zabel and Cardoso who are racing in New Zealand? Arashiro almost won the Tour of Flanders with an epic solo break last year, he looks to have the best leadout on paper.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/zzz_zps14095def.jpg

The race underway. The moment me and Gardeyn (who was driving) glimpsed our riders in the peloton from the car, we knew we had made the right decision by leading Qatar Optics.
The opening part of the race was furious with plenty of attacks. 35 kilometres in and there was a 17 man group up the road, its advantage constantly hovering around the 1 minute mark. But the 3 'big' sprinter teams brought it back with 100 kilometres to go. We were not involved in the early attacks.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/xxx_zps69068580.jpg

As a break looked as it was about to be allowed to break clear from the bunch, Kupeshov gave the signal he was not feeling great so we could attack, and what an attack it was by the Omani Sulimani. He would be apart of a five man break before being joined by Mokrov and Hayakawa, to make it a 7 man break.

The sprinter teams gradually brought back the break and they were caught with 10 kilometres to go. Sulimani and Hayakawa the last two men to be caught, a brilliant showing from the Omani. We were content that the race was going to end in a mass bunch sprint as Kupeshov was now feeling good after being protected by Ben-Nasr (who is showing great form at the start of the season) for much of the day. Our man Kupeshov, a distant outsider for the victory, had the wheel of Kummer, as we came into the sprint.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/yyyy_zps9fbb5530.jpg

Kummer was victorius. He definitely looked the fastest. Cozza sprinted to 2nd after Dual Temps teammate Lewis put in a valiant late attack. Kupeshov, got a well deserved top 10, slightly losing the wheel in the final. All in all a great start in Qatar.

On the same day as the start of tour of Qatar, the New Zealand Vineyards tour started. In the first stage TT, O'Brien continued his good form for us, he was our best finisher 21st @'37 down on stage winner Kritsky.

Easy trick for dutch-speaking people: kameel - dromedaris. Kameel has two e's, dromedaris has only one "e", that translates to his back Pfft

One thing that might be nice, is a list of the ProTour teams?

STAGE 2: Lusail - Lusail TTT -12 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Argos Oil **Farnese Vini *SES Astra

With the team having little experience in TTT's there were little to no expectations from this stage, other than to take in the sites of Qatar of course!

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM1052_zpsa1c4bf99.jpg

Avianca were the first team off the ramp and almost collided with the local livestock. Chain reaction cycles put in the best early time.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/001_zps33fd5e7c.jpg

With our team it was just a question of going through the motions. After Al Zaid and Al Mowaled were dropped fairly early, Sulimani was struggling to stay in contact, the team slowed towards the end, half intentionally and half unconsciously. Kupeshov and Ghyllebert having no difficulties.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM1059_zpsa1c852af.jpg

It was really tight at the top end of the leader board. Dual Temp looked like they were heading for victory but last team off the ram Argos Oil showed why they were favourites just edging the American team to win. Westra crossing the line first, Kummer retains the leader's jersey.

On the 60 kilometre second stage SES Astra were also looking good, finisihing with 2 men on the podium. But the win went to Cyclevox and former Coca Cola rider/ Canadian champ Boivin. For us, Nateghi put in a great performance finishing 5th on only his second raceday of the year.

@PCM2009---- I will continue to upload the opening post with stats of the 'big teams'.

STAGE 3: Dukhan - Al Gharafa 145.8 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Colbrelli(KAT) **Kummer(SAS) *Leezer(AGS)

With high temperatures and strong winds the racing was going to be tough on this stage. We were hoping for another strong performance by Kupeshov.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/wid_zps132fc8e9.jpg

Early on the racing was frantic and frenetic, many riders tried to get into the break. At times no one was even willing to chase on the peloton, so yellow jersey Kummer came to the front. We tried to get into the break with Ben Nasr.

Eventually a 9 man break did get away which included J Moreno, we did not get anyone into the break.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/wv_zps11db227d.jpg

At times with the sprinter teams pulling on the peloton, riders were strung out in a big long line, there was no time to admire the roadside decorations fans had prepared. Much of the last 50 kilometres were ridden into a headwind. The break was swallowed up with 13 kilometres to go.

With the pace up at the front the peloton was fracturing, Katusha was really driving on the pace. About 30 riders rode clear including C.S.Long and Kupeshov, but the peloton did finish together. Into the final, yellow jersey Kummer was not in a great position thanks to Argos Oil and Katusha really drilling it on the front.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/win_zpsc29de128.jpg

Colbrelli goes clear with Kreder in his wheel, but holds on for the win. A lot of sprinters look equally matched. Kupeshov @ 15th was our best finisher, he was in Kummer's wheel, but that proved the wrong one to follow today.

Stage 3 in New Zealand was the one which counted for GC. At Tanaka hill Inxausti continued his good form beating Villegas of Avianca in a 2 man sprint, baring a disaster he will win overall. We managed to get Lastras into the break and he was also out best finisher finishing in the main group 2'48 behind the winner.

Oh man one of those unfenced camels is going to disrupt the race sooner or later, it's an accident in the making!

Haha. More so you than me buddy, on the basis I don't even know what a dromedary is...some type of camel I guess! Pfft

Qatar seems to be littered with them though!

Thanks though!

@Pcm2009- You can't say that you will jinx somebody! Stage 4 report comin up soon, you didn't hear it from me but you may have started the curse of the camel! Pfft

STAGE 4: Al Thakhira - Madinat Al Shamal 144 KM's

Stage Favourites:
*** Colbrelli(KAT) **Kummer(SAS) *Leezer(AGS)

The team woke up with a shock as a team meeting was called. At the meeting Bazayev announced his retirement effective from the end of the season, feeling the time was right for him to call it a day.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM1076_zpsc3637f7c.jpg

Bazayev, with his planned retirement now out in the open, attacked and managed to become part of a 12 man break who gained a maxiumum gap of around 5 minutes over the peloton. The winds on this stage were again very strong, perhaps stronger than yesterday.

White jersey Miller, of Dual Temp, was out the back of the peloton with 35 kilometres to go, he didn't have a mechanical, he didn't crash. Unconfirmed reports suggest he had an 'altercation' with one of many local camels!

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM1079_zps305cfc90.jpg

With 30 kilometres to go the break barely had 1 minute over the peloton. Then echelons started to form. Immediately the peloton fractured and multiple groups started to form, the yellow jersey group were at the front and contained 55 riders, including Bazayev, C.S.Long and Kupeshov.

With 20 kilometres to go Zelinka of Panathinaikos attacked and joined up with the last remaining breakaway rider Mora. With 10 kilometres to go there was no real chase and they had pulled out 1 minute. Our man C.S.Long attacked and bridged the gap, but then the peloton sped up and the break was caught. The sprinters were playing cat and mouse with Kummer, Leezer and Kupeshov dropping to the rear of the front group. The peloton swelled to 80 riders.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM1081_zpsd519e3f7.jpg

But no one was a match for Colbrelli, who wins for the second straight day and takes over the yellow jersey after a long powerful sprint. Kupeshov faded big time in the sprint, he and Kummer seem to struggle after real hard racing on the flat. Argos Oil seem to have some communication problems, Arashiro outsprinted supposed teammate Leezer to 2nd but Leezer would now be only 2 seconds in arrears if Arashiro slowed in the final.
