Ah, the famous "the peloton can't catch the breakaway in the Aussie RR-champs" outcome....
Still hard to believe that there were only Australians present, looking at the flags

Are you going to put flag's to the whole pack in the result's? Man, that would take a lot of time. Recommend only doing to the top 10's. |

The riders are ready to compete in the Santos Tour Down Under. The competition is fierce with riders present such as Sagan, Degenkolb, Kittel, Greipel, Pozzato, Petacchi, Rojas, Kristoff, Farrar, Bennati, Hushovd and Renshaw. Boasson Hagen and Thomas will be the leaders for the Sky Pro Cycling Team, while in the flat stages also Sutton will participate in the mass sprints. It is expected that the key to the victory will be the fifth stage which finishes on the top of Willunga Hill. Both Boasson Hagen and Thomas have the capacity to do well here.

Thanks for all the remarks. Hayman is OK. With the extra teams I don't think this was the typical "I do not care" scenario in the Australian National Championships. With 15 kms to go the pack was really not more than a minute behind. But when the action was about to go down, quite some riders crashed. Organization was gone and several teams dropped back riders to wait for their leaders who had dropped behind. Once the escapies expanded their advantage to more than three minutes the pack gave up. I'm not sure what to do with the flags. I think it looks nice but it indeed costs some time. It goes a little faster if you simply copy past them into the excell file. |

Nice podium with Richie Porte in the Aussie TT Championsips. As for the Aussie RR championships most weird outcome ever. |

Stage 1: Prospect - Lobethal 135 km
Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas
The pack was really determined to force this first stage of the Tour Down Under into a mass sprint at the finish and didn't allow anybody to break away from the pack in the first 20 kilometers of the race. Eventually Roux, Dumoulin and Bobridge did get some space from the pack.
Dumoulin arrived first at the Skoda King of the Mountain sprint on the Checker Hill road and will be wearing the mountain jersey tomorrow. The breakaway expanded its lead on the pack to 4 minutes.
Dumoulin also took the first intermediate sprint at Onkaparinga Valley road before Roux and Bobridge. The escapies still had a 5 minute lead on the pack, which had significantly increased its lead.
Also the second intermediate sprint at Onkaparinga Valley road was for Dumoulin. The pack followed at a distance of 3 minutes.
The third intermediate sprint at Onkaparinga Valley road was for Bobridge, who beat Dumoulin and Roux in the sprint. With 17 kilometers to go the pack followed at one minute.
The breakaway didn't have a chance against the pack at full speed. It was going to be a mass sprint for the finish. In the fight for the perfect position several riders crashed int he back of the peleton. They fell behind.
In the sprint it was Argos who took initiative. Kittel was the leadout man for Degenkolb who finished the sprint perfectly and won the first stage. Guardini finished second and Sagan third.

Boasson Hagen and Sutton were unable to fight for the victory in the sprint at Lobethal in the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. The competition was quite fierce and the riders did not manage to position themselves perfectly, which is required to score a podium finish in such a flat stage as this one. Tomorrow there is a small mountain just before the finishline. If Thomas and/or Boasson Hagen manages to be in the very front of the pack here, there is a good chance Team Sky scores an excellent result at the finish...

Stage 2: Mt Barker - Rostrevor 117 km
Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas
The Argos team has set its mind on protecting the leaders jersey of Degenkolb and didn't let anybody escape from the pack, despite several attempts by many riders to breakaway. At the Jayco intermediate sprint at Echunga, it was Degenkolb who took the intermediate sprint before Petacchi and Guardini.
The second intermediate sprint at Echunga was for Guardini who won before Degenkolb. Quintana, who escaped earlier and was past in the sprint, finished third.
Izagirre eventually managed to get away from the pack. He was chased by Eisel and Quintana, which would soon be caught by the pack again. Izagirre had to do it alone.
In the prelude to the Corkscrew road, Jungels, Velits and Sutherland escaped.
Sutherland arrived first at the Skoda King of the Mountain sprint at Corkscrew road before Horner, Vorganov, Velits and Jungels. The pack was only a 30 seconds behind.
The sprint was very interesting as they pack quickly gained ground on the breakaway, whose riders were sprinting for the victory. Eventually Sutherland managed to get to the finish first before his fellow escapies Vorganov and Velits, while Sagan secured the fourth place. Horner and Jungles dropped far back into the pack.

Nice Result for Eddy Boss. It is still too early though so only 8th is acceptable. |

How come you've got such a strong field in STDU?
Usually the strongest riders have 76 max in hill or sprint. |

I'm not using the PCMdaily database but a self-made thing. You can change it by changing the popularity number in STA_races. If you increase the popularity, the number of excellent riders will increase. |

It turned out to be a frustrating day for the Sky Pro Cycling team today. The riders expected an decisive breakaway to occur at the Corkscrew Road. When Sutherland attacked far for the climb, Thomas was still a little too far away to jump along and Boasson Hagen decided to wait for the mass sprint as the pack was moving very fast. Therefore it was very dissapointing to see that the breakaway made it to the finish. Especially since no great finishers tagged along.
