I know that event... It is one of the top events in terms of local organization...
A real tragedy that no-one deserves.
I hope the event is rescheduled, or does return next year in honor.

The rider was Junior Heffernan who was only 23 and apparently this was his first race for the team, so sad |

Oh shit
Security is a difficult matter when it comes to cyclist. They're practically unprotected and riding at so high speeds with "just" a helmet. It's a dangerous sport... |

I remember when i used to go out on club runs on a Sunday morning, we all used to be in pairs and the amount of drivers who tried to swerve us off the road was ridiculous |

Junior Heffernan rode for the team sponsored by my workplace. I have to say it's the first time someone I actually know, who was neither old, nor ill, has died. I'm glad to say, on the selfish side, that I wasn't there in the race, nor that I'd gone to watch.
I heard the news via twitter obviously to start with, and piece by piece over the day and today more has seemingly come to light about the circumstances. Clearly there will be a full inquiry into the incident, and though I'm not one for spreading rumour, this is what I have heard:
Junior was in the break with a few other riders, and they were looking likely to be caught. He was near the back of the group/last man in the group. The BMW he hit wasn't moving, or if it was, it wasn't going fast. The theory is that he was looking over his shoulder to check where the peloton was, when he deviated from his line (maybe the road had a slight bend in it?) and hit the car head on. The helmet was not the first part of his face to hit the car.
As no one saw the event, other than the car driver (though another theory was that the car was a parked car), we may never know the truth.
I trained today in the Herbalife - Leisure Lakes kit for the first time in memory of a lad a similar age to me, who was far more dedicated, far more talented, and a damn sight more friendly. Having spent an entire race on the side of a road in the past, chatting to his dad, I can only offer my sincerest condolences.
May Junior rest in peace. |

It might've been a parked car. World Champion and extreme talent Jean-Pierre Monseré died that way in a race... |

Rip Junior, this is a tragedy.
But what i dont get is, that everybody speaks about how talented and friendly and detrmined he was. Is this needed? I mean, the lad died, it does not matter if he was cool or was a bad student laying in front of tv whole day.

A life is still a life no matter how you look at it, his parents will be totally distraught by this
And rjc_43, really nice gesture of you to train in your Herbalife - Leisure Lakes kit in his memory |

Not fond of the Moorish head, but I guess it's going to be hidden behind the sponsors' name anyway, so it's no big deal.
It's nothing too special otherwise, is it ? |

Michael Boogerd has admitted for Dutch television that he used EPO, cortisones and blood transfusions from 1997 - 2007 What a shock!
