Tour de San Luis Stage 1

Stage 1 is flat, and the favourites include IAM’s Sebastien Hinault, Lampre’s Elia Favili and Garmin’s Koldo Fernandez.

Straight from the gun, Jerome attacks for Europcar. He looks eager to grab some camera time.

He is joined soon after by Ferrari (Caja Rural) and Failli (Vini Fantini). The three form the day’s break.

Jerome wins the day’s mountain sprint ahead of Ferrari in 2nd and Failli in 3rd. He will wear the Polka – Dotted jersey tomorrow. The Intermediate Sprints 1 & 2 are won by Failli and Jerome respectively.

The Gap swells to 5’00” at 80kms to go. The peloton has increased its speed thanks to IAM, who look eager to set up Hinault for the sprint.

As the finish approaches, the gap is closed by IAM and at 10km’s to go the gap is as 30 seconds. The pressure proves too much as Ferrari attacks out of the break…

…but it was always doomed to failure. The final remnance of the break is swept up with just 5km’s to go. IAM and Lampre set up the two sprint trains with some sprinters on the end. Janse Van Rensburg is in a good position behind the Lampre train in a large group of sprinters looking for a wheel. They are:
Banidera -> Goddaert -> Hinault -> Haedo
Ubeto -> Richeze -> Favili -> Jorgonsen

But look! There has been a split in the peloton and Tiernan – Locke has been caught napping! A big dent in his GC hopes if he can’t regain touch

No! Favili wins it, with a great sprint for Lampre. His going early tactic worked. He will be in the leader’s jersey tomorrow.

Janse Van Rensburg eventually takes a very close third behind Haedo which is a great result, but what is going on behind?

Tiernan – Locke comes in 3’12 behind. This should put paid to our GC hopes but we only ever really came for stage wins and to build fitness. It could be a blessing in disguise that he can be allowed to attack. We’ll see!

Tour de San Luis Stage 2

Another flat profile today but it has a slight gradient in the final kilometers which could help more punchy sprinters. Still, the favourites are like last stage the main sprinters. IAM’s Hinault is the best sprinter here but failed to deliver yesterday. Can he improve today?

The day’s break is formed and it includes our young rider Josh Edmonson. The other riders are Quintero (Colombia), Rebellin (CCC), Smukulis (Katusha) and Gatto (Vini).

Gatto wins the Mountain sprint with Edmonson third. Rebellin was second but the other two didn’t seem bothered.
At the first intermediate sprint only Rebellin sprints so he takes maximum points.

With 70kms to go IAM, FDJ and Cannondale start to pull hard at the front of the peloton, seemingly for their sprinters. The gap is reduced to 4’30”

The break is caught and with 6km to go it will definetly be another bunch sprint. There is a fight for wheels behind Lampre who are pulling at the front. Janse Van Rensburg grabs Duque’s wheel.

Lampre form the only train and plenty of sprinters latch on to the end. It is:
Richeze -> Ubeto -> Favili -> Fernandez -> Duque -> Janse Van Rensburg

Favili has to start his sprint early at 2kms. He is already being overtaken! Janse Van Rensburg is in a good position behind Arashiro.

With 800m to go Fernandez is flying in first, though he may have gone too early and has started to fade. Janse Van Rensburg is falling positions after starting too early.

Fernandez eventually ran out of speed, and Duque came through to win with a giant acceleration which reached 55kph! Favili will keep the Leader’s jersey though due to Duque doing badly on stage 1. Hinault comes in second for IAM and Taborre third for Vini Fantini
Janse Van Rensburg can’t repeat his stage 1 heroics and finishes seventh. Now the race moves on to the GC battle on Stages 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Tour de San Luis Stage 3

The first hilly stage is today, which should be the first indicators of GC challengers. Pre-stage favourites include Kolobnev, Kiriyenka and Rebellin, who was strangely in the break yesterday.

No break is formed before the first sprint point so Janse Van Rensburg takes first. Favili extends his GC lead to four seconds with second.

After the sprint point Canuti (Cannondale) attacks with Suarez (Colombia). Kolobnev (Katusha), Gatto (Vini) and Saramontins (IAM) join them. Strange tactics from Kolobnev, getting into the break. Canuti wins the first KoM sprint.

Gatto takes the big KoM points over the Cat 2 climb and takes the jersey. Kolobnev is second and Saramontins third. Over the top of the Mountain the gap is 6’30” with Saxo Bank, FDJ and us controlling the pace.

With 40kms to go the gap is 3’00” to the peloton, now controlled by FDJ, Garmin and Saxo Bank

We reach the foot of the climb at 15kms to go. We are doing our best at the fornt but the gap is stuck at two minutes.

With 10kms to go, we decide enough is enough. With the gap at 1’30”, Tiernan – Locke attacks.

Tiernan – Locke has gone past most of the break with 5kms to go. He is 35” ahead of the peloton and only Saramontins is ahead.

2kms to go and he is on the final ascent after passing Saramontins. The gap is holding at 35” to the second group on the road. Can he hold on?

600m to go and Wegmann is coming at high speed. Tiernan – Locke is looking good though and the gap is 24”

Tiernan – Locke takes the win. What a win and the first ever win for Standard Bank – Aegon. Wegmann finishes second and Favili wins the peloton sprint. His leaders jersey is safe for now.

Tour de San Luis Stage 4

Today is a TT which will set the race up before the mountains. Sky’s Vasil Kiryienka is the big favourite today, with other threats being Thomas Dekker riding for Garmin and Jeremy Roy of FDJ. Our big hope is Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg who we hope to get a top 5 in a strong field.

Vellieux sets the first competitive time of the day, with the benchmark of 27’01. He shouldn’t be up there for long though as there are many better TT’ers in this race.

Our rider Goos rides a good time trial, coming in third with a time of 27’16, 15” down behind Smukulis (5”) and Vellieux who looks to have set a very fast time.

Europcar’s Gaudin sets a new second best time 27’04, 3” behind Vellieux. A surprising time from the Frenchman who is not known for his TT ability. The big guns are starting to come in now.

Quinziato sets a new best time of 26’49, 11” ahead of Vellieux. An extremely fast ride from him, but it will most likely be beaten later on.

Big favourite Kiryienka finishes in provisional fourth. He will be disappointed with that being the fastest TT’er in the race. The clock is stopped at 27'05, 16" behind Quinziato.

Narvardauskas overtakes Quinziato and rides into provisional first. His time is 26’44, 5” ahead of the Italian. Riders are coming thick and fast now including our rider Janse Van Rensburg.

And the South Arican TT champion Janse Van Rensburg doesn’t disappoint for us. He sets a new best time by 3”! 26’41 is a very fast time and with only 10 riders to go the standings are like this:

But Janse Van Rensburg won’t take the win! Dekker in fifth overall takes first by 1” for Garmin. The only threat now is Roy of FDJ…

…Who comes second to Dekker’s time by less than a second! Unlucky for Roy but he is consoled by the fact that he will most likely wear the leaders jersey tomorrow.

Race leader Favili comes in 55” down. He loses his leaders jersey to Roy ahead of tomorrow’s mountains.
Dekker takes the stage win with Roy second. Standard Bank - Aegon’s Janse Van Rensburg finishes in third, his second podium of the race. Navardauskas finishes fourth and Quinziato fifth.
