I'll probably need to play with the pictures a little bit (and maybe my graphics settings)... that image isn't the clearest thing in the world. I'll try to have an image or two from most races since some asked for them.
Oh, and stage is posted on the previous page if you missed it.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca: Stage 2
Another sprinter stage today, but not quite as flat as yesterdays race. There were actually some mountain points available, but mainly in the last thirty KM... so many teams hoping for the climbers jersey didn't participate in the breakaway. When it did form, there were two distinct group... a lead group of about 9 riders and a chase group of 3 who could never quite catch up to the lead.
The 3 man intermediate group was caught well before the final hills, but the main group of 9 survived until 3 KM before the finish. It came down to a mass sprint that wasn't extremely well ordered. In the end, Tom Boonen just nosed out Oscar Freire to take the stage win, though Freire retained the overall leader jersey.
There were no time bonuses for the final sprint... or sprinters points, so members of the breakaway took both the mountain and sprinters jerseys.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca: Stage 3
The first stage not to be decided by the sprinters, the third stage consisted of some rolling hills with a steep uphill finish.
The breakaway that formed was based mainly on picking up mountain points, and was swallowed up by the pelaton by the end of the race. A small attack gained some ground just prior to the final time, but the pelaton caught them on the final slope. The winner of the stage, Joaquim Rodríguez of CAISSE D'EPARGNE was in the group however, so it was not for naught.
Igor Astarloa of Milram took the overall lead, although there is a huge group all maintaining the same time. In a bit of a suprise, Gateway Racing rider Pedro Nicacio is sitting in second place. Oscar Freire was able to keep with the pelaton and is now placed third.

I apologize in advance in terms of my descriptions. I raced all of these this weekend, but my exports won't open properly on my home PC (but work fine at work). Some the race routes are a bit fuzzy in my mind and are blurring together with others, so I may not be 100% accurate... but the results are correct at least.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca: Stage 4
The early breakaway consisted of a single rider Vicente Peiro of GRUPO NICOLÁS MATEOS, followed by another pair... Martin Gilbert of Gateway Racing and Andrea Noè of Liquigas. Peiro took the early climbs while Gilbert and Noe split second place on the uphills, but at the end of the day Gilbert had a 1 point lead over Peiro in the mountain classification.
There were some big hills toward the end of the race when the break was caught that caused some splitting of the pelaton, but there was still a large group that finished together. A late climb eliminated many of the sprinters, though some like Friere were able to hold on and stay close enough to catch the pelaton on the downhill. It leveled out before the final sprint, but there wasn't enough of a rest for the sprinters to contend.
Just before the summit a large group of nearly 20 riders attacked and built up a lead of 45 seconds. There were several agressive moves as the breakaway approached the finish line, including a move by Mauricio Ortega of Gateway racing that looked like it might succeed. Ortega seemed to totally run out of gas in the final stretch and was passed by a few riders including stage winner Riccardo Riccò of Saunier Duval. The breakaway group was engulfed in the final straight as well, resulting in 68 riders finishing with the same time.
Based on his 13th place finish, Pedro Nicacio of Gateway Racing managed to take the overall leader jersey... despite 51 riders having identical times. That jersey, along with the mountain jersey held by Martin Gilbert, are the first leader jerseys earned by the newly formed Gateway Racing team.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca: Final Stage
The race was up for graps on the final day of the Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca, with 51 riders all sporting the same time coming in to the final day of racing. The final stage had some early hills followed by a long stretch of flat, so with no time bonuses in the race it was thought that finishing position could be the primary factor rather than time.
The race was fairly passive, with only a small breakaway containing no riders in contention. The break was caught about 30 km from the finish and it looked to be a day for the sprinters.
Then race leader Pedro Nicacio and his Gateway Racing teammate Mauricio surged away from the pack with 10 km to go. With neither known for their sprinting ability, it seemed they would try to take the race with a late move.
Unfortunately for the two racers, it was not to be as they were caught in the final kilometer. Constantino Zaballa of CAISSE D'EPARGNE ended up winning the stage in the final sprint. His stage win was also enough to move him from fourth to first in the overall standings, as race leader Pedro Nicacio dropped down to 5th with his 15th place finish.
It was an odd race... 51 riders all finished with identical times, but in the end Zaballa was triumphant. Martin Gilbert of Gateway Racing barely held on for the mountain classification win, and Vicente Peiro took the points classification

Amgen Tour of California: Stage 2 - Gateway Triumphant!
The profile for the second stage of the Tour of California has slight undulations throughout the route with a late classified climb followed by a short downhill and about 20 KM of relatively flat terrain.
Prior to the race, Kurt Smith, the Gateway Racing team manager caught my eye and mouthed the words "Today's the day". In earlier interviews Smith had mentioned that he was hoping the team could take a stage win in this year's Tour of California.
And from the beginning it was obvious that Gateway was going to be active. They instigated the day's first breakaway, with Martin Gilbert surging away from the group in the first few kilometers. Suprisingly nobody followed initially, and Gilbert built up a lead of 2 minutes before some other attacks formed. Gilbert cruised through the first two sprints before he was caught by another breakaway group.
The group stayed ahead but was looking to possibly be caught befoe the only categorized climb of the day... but Gilbert would have none of it. He attacked again on the beginnings of the slope as the pelaton approached and kept ahead until the summit.
After taking the initial mountains jersey, Gilbert sat up and returned to the pack, and it initially looked like that would be it in terms of attacks and we'd have another mass sprint finish. But it looked like the climb had taken some of the power from the legs of the sprinters teams... the pace that was set after the downhill was not backbreaking.
Three Gateway riders came to the front of the pelaton, and when their turn in the relay came with 9 kilometers to the finish they attacked! Alex Ardila led out Mauricio Ortega and Pedro Nicacio before falling back, and the two team leaders surged ahead to build up a lead of fifty seconds over the chasing pelaton!
Could the pelaton bring the two moo-crew leaders back before the line? It was clear the sprinters legs were hurting from the late climb but they put in a strong effort... but it was not enough! Ortega led Nicacio across the finish line to take the stage win, the first for the Gateway Racing team in their brief existance. Not only that, they took the yellow jersey and the mountain classification as well, making it a banner day for the cow patterned riders of this US based team.

Normal difficulty.
I hope to keep this going for a while (even if I burn out on posting here I'll keep playing). I figure after my first win in a grand tour I'll bump it to hard. |

Also, if you're suprised by the result, my guys are in very good form for this race. Mid 80's and climbing as the race progresses.
My team has no races in March (due to the calendar bug) and I'm too lazy to go into the db and put my team in some races. I've applied for some wildcards in March but could very well get none. So I decided to target this race and get an early peak (not upper 90's but still high 80's low 90's form). And really there aren't many top riders in the race... it's a much weaker field than I expected.

Amgen Tour of California: Stage 3
Today's stage had some early hills and then a longer flat section in the second half of the course. There was a lot of early fighting and attacks to claim the mountain points, but current mountain classification leader Martin Gilbert of Gateway Racing was able to get away and claim 26 points on the day, opening up a significant 16 point lead in the classification. Gilbert also won the two intermediate sprints to put forth an extremely successful day in the break.
The breakaway was quickly caught and passed toward the end of the race however. Gateway riders Mauricio Ortega and Pedro Nicacio tried to repeat their breakaway in the final 10 kilometers, but they could never get more than a few seconds ahead of the pack and were quickly overtaken by the sprinters.
"Fast Freddy" Rodriguez of Predictor-Lotto timed his sprint perfectly and Stuart O'Grady's late charge ran out of room before the finish. The partisan US crowd cheered wildly as Rodriguez raised his arms in victory as he crossed the line.
Mauricio Ortega of Gateway Racing kept the leaders jersey in the race by 5 seconds, while Fred Rodriguez moved up to 4th at 11 seconds behind the pack.

Amgen Tour of California: Stage 4
While not imposing like many European peaks, this stage of the tour of California is the most mountainous stage in this year's event. The final peak was 26 km from the finish though, so some doubted going in that it would be totally decisive.
Early on a break of eleven riders formed. Gateway Racing rider Martin Gilbert joined the break, not working at all except to sprint ahead to take top points in all the mountain sprints. The breakaway contained some dangerous riders in Frank Schleck, Michael Boogerd and Sergio Paulinho, all very close to the leader's jersey.
Gateway began chasing after the first climb of the day, but the break was strong and stayed away. As the Pelaton approached the peak of the final climb, the break still had nearly 3 minutes on the pack. Gateway decided that this was too close to call and their leaders, Nicacio and Ortega attacked!
The two powered ahead of the pack and kept gaining on the breakaway steadily, as the pack maintained a distance of about a minute and a half. The two caught the pack as the downhill ended... then with 6km to go they attacked again! Ortega was unable to pull away but Nicacio showed an incredible burst as he opened a gap. He began the sprint with an 18 second margin over the breakaway, and held on for an extremely impressive win, taking the leader's jersey from his teammate Ortega.
Nicacio also took the lead in the points competition and the young riders classification, and Gateway moved into first in the team competition. Combined with Gilbert extending his lead in the mountains classification, Gateway now owns first place in every are of the Tour of California! Extremely impressive performance for this new team.

Honestly I'm shocked it's going so well. For whatever reason the late breaks I'm making between 10-6 km from the finish are working wonderfully. The only reason I can imagine is that I have a significant fitness advantage over everyone else. |

Amgen Tour of California: Stage 5
Today's stage was a long hilly route covering 215 kilometers. There was very little flat to speak of though the hills were all fairly small. An eight man break formed early on, which mountain classification leader Martin Gilbert again latched onto. Like yesterday, he simply let the others do the work and attacked near the summitt to take maximum climber points, extending his lead even further.
The break was caught with time to spare today, with Gateway limiting the lead the breakaway got and CSC and Predictor-Lotto working to bring it back in later in the race.
With 6.5 km to go, Gateway's Mauricio Ortega and Pedro Nicacio attacked as has been their pattern this race. Ortega blew himself out getting Nicacio away from the pack and then fell back to the pelaton as Nicacio rocketed past.
The timing was perfect as Nicacio built up a 45 second advantage as he began his sprint and held on to win by 30 seconds, lengthening his lead in the general and points classifications. Nicacio praised Ortega profusely during the post race interviews.
"I don't think I would have had the energy to hold them off had Mauricio not launched me from the group so expertly. They were really coming on hard and likely would have caught me if not for his effort."
Gateway maintained the lead in all classifications, and look to be in prime position to finish the tour with a dominating result.

Amgen Tour of California: Stage 7
Another hilly stage without any real climbs of note, today's stage seemed to follow a familiar pattern. We had another early break... and Martin Gilbert of Gateway Racing rode along without contributing at all, sprinting ahead for maximum climbing points.
Gateway seemed to ride to keep the break within a distance rather than trying to catch it as the closest rider was over 10 minutes off the pace. Only one or two teams decided to try to pick up the pace toward the end.
The gap started to close from the 7 minute maximum that it had reached, but it wasn't closing extremely fast. With 6 km to go the break still had a lead of about a minute. So... as seems to be their custom, Mauricio Ortega and Pedro Nicacio of Gateway racing attacked.
A group followed them on this move and the pelaton increased their speed, but the two "Moo Crew" riders caught the breakaway which Gilbert was now leading just before the 3km mark, with the pelaton only 35 seconds behind. Ortega seemed to be out of energy as he was leading Nicacio the whole way forward, so he jumped onto the back wheel of the breakaway while Nicacio powered ahead, then starting to sprint for all he was worth. The rest of the attackers that rode with the two of them followed Ortega to the back of the breakaway.
At the front William Walker of Rabobank sprinted past Martin Gilbert of Gateway who got on his wheel... meanwhile Nicacio was catching and passing one breakaway member after another. Walker pulled away slightly and kept ahead for the win, while Gilbert managed to hold on for second and Nicacio edged out Frederick Wilhelms of Liquigas for third.
The pelaton caught the back of the breakaway in the final stretch to finish in a mass group. Gateway retained ownership of all leader jerseys for yet another day.
