Giro del Capo Stage 1 - With Chris Wherry
Hey everyone! Im Chris Wherry, an american rider on the Toyota-United team and using some 'brill' picture I will give you a run through of the opening stage of this South African race.
Ah, this is Bobby (Lea) at the start, keen to get things under way
Well, I attacked on the 2nd climb and this is from the 3rd or 4th, the rest of the break couldnt hang on to me, but I slowed down for them, but with about 40km to go I got a call in my ear telling me to "leave the idiots" and "go for the win". So off I went!
I was very nervous coming into the sprint as I had just over a minute with 2km to go, the american fans really helped me and spurred me on.
and I WON!!! By 23 seconds. Wes Sulzberer, my Aussie mate came 2nd while good old Justin (England) came in 3rd.

Hi again, Chris Wherry here. I have been handed the responsibility of documenting the rest of the Giro del Capo.
Stage 2 was definately the toughest and instead of worrying about defending my lead, we allowed Sean Sullivan to go clear in a break, little did we know that it would be the break that won the tour.
Sean had just 1 companion, and here we see him shaking off some sweat. Sean's a great guy but I'm sure glad I dont share a room with him, Bobby Lea has that role!
Sean took an unassailable lead, another 2 riders had also attacked and by the time we got to the main climb our plan rolled into action. All our riders took to the front and destroyed the peleton!
I did my turn before handing over to Stefano (Barberi) who was so strong that he pulled away, with Henk (Vogels) in his wheel. Henk dropped back but Stefano kept going.
Up front Sean had dropped his companion and took a fabulous win.
While Stefano took 5th, a km ahead of our main group.
Stage Results:
1 Sean Sullivan TOYOTA - UNITED 4h59'05
2 John-Lee Augustyn BARLOWORLD + 1'46
3 Roel Paulissen BODYSOL - WIN FOR LIFE - JONG VLAANDEREN s.t.
4 Stefan Trafelet CONTINENTAL TEAM MILRAM + 2'07
5 Stefano Barberi TOYOTA - UNITED + 7'41
6 Björn Papstein TEAM LAMONTA + 8'57
7 Andreas Schillenger CONTINENTAL TEAM MILRAM s.t.
8 Paolo Longo Borghini BARLOWORLD s.t.
9 Justin England TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
10 Henk Vogels TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
11 Chris Wherry TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
12 Shaun Higgerson SOUTH AUSTRALIA.COM - AIS CYCLING s.t.
13 Holger Sievers TEAM LAMONTA s.t.
14 Hannes Blank TEAM LAMONTA s.t.
15 Burke Swindlehurst TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
16 Simon Kelly TEAM MURPHY & GUNN - NEWLYN s.t.
Following Bobby Lea's disapointment of yesterday in which he was dropped by our tough pace and came in 22nd, he attacked today while the rest of us sat back for a lazy day.
We can see Bobby's sprinting strength early on.
and he hung on to win!
Stage 4 was the uphill time trial (groan) and we had to wait a long time before any of us started.
Lea was first up for us as Higgerson set the quickest time. There you can see myself starting while Barberi already waiting, I was the 4th Toyota rider in succession, following Swindlehurst, Vogels and England. Burke (Swindlehurst) rode a superb ride to take the lead, with Vogels taking what was then 3rd, and England taking 2nd. I faded towards the end of the course but I was pleased with 7th, while Barberi suffered more coming 50th. Before Sean set off he knew the standings, he was given the choice to ride for the win or hand Burke his first win of the season. Being a nice guy Sean did not ride flat out and finished a confortable 10th. 4 Stage wins out of 4 with 1 to go!
1 Burke Swindlehurst TOYOTA - UNITED 9'17
2 Justin England TOYOTA - UNITED + 3
3 Hannes Blank TEAM LAMONTA + 4
4 Shaun Higgerson SOUTH AUSTRALIA.COM - AIS CYCLING + 6
5 Henk Vogels TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
6 Kristof Vandewalle WIELERGROEP BEVEREN 2000 + 8
7 Chris Wherry TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
8 John-Lee Augustyn BARLOWORLD s.t.
9 Björn Papstein TEAM LAMONTA + 9
10 Sean Sullivan TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
In Stage 5, Henk (Vogels) was the man in the break but a flurry of attacks towards the finish ended his hopes as Lamonta's Sievers went clear. Barberi and then Swinklehurst attacked but Sievers won.
Sulzberger took 2nd, while Burke took a good 4th.
Sean finished safely in the pack to secure his win.
One minor diappointment was that Sulzberger grabbed the points jersey in the last stage, while we managed positions 2-6.
1 Wes Sulzberger SOUTH AUSTRALIA.COM - AIS CYCLING 54
2 Burke Swindlehurst TOYOTA - UNITED 50
3 Sean Sullivan TOYOTA - UNITED 50
4 Justin England TOYOTA - UNITED 43
5 Chris Wherry TOYOTA - UNITED 39
6 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED 37
But of course much more important than Sean's overall win, was my King of the Mountains win!
1 Chris Wherry TOYOTA - UNITED 41
2 Sean Sullivan TOYOTA - UNITED 34
3 Roel Paulissen BODYSOL - WIN FOR LIFE - JONG VLAANDEREN 28
Wherry Out!
---------------
Id like to thanks Chris for the work weve done and his reward is a plabe home to join everyone else in an Italian training camp. Floyd Landis is still not quite in shape so we felt this was needed, in other team news we are expecting Scout reports from America and Luxembourg later this month while a report from Britain will return early next month.
The ProTour has begun with Marcus Burghardt capturing Paris-Nice and as I write this Bradley Wiggins leads Tirreno-Adriatico with 2 stages remaining. |

Criterium International
Chris Baldwin took 4th in Stage 3's time trial to finish 10th overall, he was our best performer. Justin England finished 15th overall, he was lying 6th going into the time trial but struggled against some top ProTour talent in the time trial. The hilly stage was good for him as he finished 9th, in the 2nd group, which contained just 5 riders.
1 Andrei Grivko TEAM MILRAM 7h12'49
2 David Moncoutié COFIDIS, LE CRÉDIT PAR TÉLÉPHONE + 5

with..
Ivan Stevic!
After the main climb, largely thanks to Floyd, we were out on our own. The rest of the field were rather weak, and Floyd was brilliant considering this was his first race for our team. Two guys managed to haul themselves back to our group and tried to attack. They failed and soon enough went backwards, as I took a win infront of my home crowd!
1 Ivan Stevic TOYOTA - UNITED 4h00'44
2 Caleb Manion TOYOTA - UNITED + 25
3 Jose Manuel Garcia TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
4 Simon Kelly TEAM MURPHY & GUNN - NEWLYN + 1'11
5 Floyd Landis TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
6 Massimo Demarin PERUTNINA PTUJ s.t.
7 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED + 2'00
This time we went away alone on the first climb.
Lea and Landis were not as strong today, and it was just Myself, Manion and Garcia up front at the top of the second climb. Manion couldn't hang on in the descent and Garcia began to struggle with a few kilometres to go as I took the win.
1 Ivan Stevic TOYOTA - UNITED 4h09'06
2 Jose Manuel Garcia TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
3 Caleb Manion TOYOTA - UNITED + 2'05
4 Michael Bjørn Johansen TEAM VISION BIKES + 6'47
5 Gorazd Bauer PERUTNINA PTUJ s.t.
19 Floyd Landis TOYOTA - UNITED + 10'42
44 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED + 15'46
Today the first climb was even earlier than before but it was still too easy as we disappeared into the distance yet again!
THis time Manion held on to the sprint which Garcia launched, I took his wheel and he kept looking round, expecting me to come through but I knew he deserved a win and just kept behind him. He may be 33 but the excitement he got from wining was just amazing, he had the widest smile of anyone I've ever seen!
1 Jose Manuel Garcia TOYOTA - UNITED 4h22'53
2 Ivan Stevic TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
3 Caleb Manion TOYOTA - UNITED s.t.
4 Grega Bole SAVA + 6'10
5 Jürgen Pauritsch APOSPORT KRONE LINZ s.t.
14 Floyd Landis TOYOTA - UNITED + 9'42
19 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED + 12'42
The final stage was flat, so there was no opportunity to surge away, and we made sure noone else could either, as I looked for Stage win number 3, I didnt have brilliant positioning with 3km to go but I just stook on the wheel of the guy in front and suddenly was in 2nd, I made my burst for home but Merver was too strong.
16 Floyd Landis TOYOTA - UNITED + 24'33
20 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED + 31'46
Points
I confartably earned this jersey although I nev er actually wore it!
1 Ivan Stevic TOYOTA - UNITED 110
2 Caleb Manion TOYOTA - UNITED 70
3 Jose Manuel Garcia TOYOTA - UNITED 69
Mountains
Jose Garcia took the KoM jersey over Manion by a small margin, but Manion won the White jersey so that's ok!
1 Jose Manuel Garcia TOYOTA - UNITED 68
2 Caleb Manion TOYOTA - UNITED 64
3 Floyd Landis TOYOTA - UNITED 54
4 Ivan Stevic TOYOTA - UNITED 40
5 Booby Lea TOYOTA - UNITED 36 |

The Archer International Grand Prix
Dean Downing was our out and out leader and it did not long before a group of 16 took a healthy lead over the peleton without attacking. The group soon dropped a few riders though and contained just 2 brits, DFLs Dan Fleeman and Our Dean Downing, there were 3 Irishmen though.
With 7 km to go there was just 7 riders left. Wherry, Manion, Blackgrove and Landis had all played their part in sustaining the groups lead.
Nico Mattan attacked, but I was ready and Downing countered and rode past him, to make his way to win #2 of the season. In the sprint behind McCann and Scanlon both passed Mattan and each took their best result of the season, McCann managed to outsprint Scanlon surprsingly, so the Irish Championships promises to be interesting when it comes in June.
