Barry's Maple Leaf Cycling team appears to be attempting to appeal to the French-Canadian population with the signing of two Frenchman in the draft.
30-year old Christophe Riblon, who finished seventh in the 2010 Criterium du Dauphine and won a stage of the Tour De France in the same year, signed a two year deal with the team.
Meanwhile, they gave a three-year contract to 26-year old Brice Feillu, who won a stage in the 2009 Tour De France, in which he finished 25th overall. |

BARRY'S ON SPONSORS DRIVE
Barry's Maple Leaf appeared to be on a sponsors drive as they signed two Canadian's and a young Irishman in the draft.
36 year old Michael Barry, from Toronto, will join Alexander Vinokourov, David McCann and Stuart O' Grady as experienced 'road-captains' for Barry's on a one year contract.
Quebec native, Keven Lacombe also signed on a 2-year deal. The 26-year old endurance sprinter also used to play junior ice hockey for the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
They then handed a three-year deal to 19-year old youngster, Felix English. Another British-born Irishman, English sprung to fame as an 18-year old when he defeated Sir Chris Hoy in the 2010 UEC European Track Championships. |

We have acquired photographs today that appear to highlight the number one aim of World Tour Cycling Team 'Barry's Maple Leaf' is to win the Tour de France in 2012.
These photos show various bits of paper and information that have been left lying around the two Irish based HQ's of the team in Cork & Galway.
The headline piece captured was a piece of handwritten paper that simply reads:
ABOVE ALL, RYDER MUST WIN THAT TOUR
It is unknown whether that directive comes from within the team, from the owners or whether they are anything more than suggestions.
We attempted to contact the team, but they have refused to comment, stating that they will confirm their 2012 aims at an official team unveiling at the end of the draft.

Canadians Continue to Join
Barry's added two more Canadian's to the team today, with the big signing being a Canadian U23 champion.
Hugo Houle did the domestic double in 2011 by winning both the Canadian U23 Road Race and Time Trial titles and Barry's have signed the 21-year old as a stagiaire.
Sebastian Salas, the 24-year old climber from Vancover, has also signed a three year deal with the team.
Meanwhile, they also added basque rider Pablo Urtasun for two years. |

TEAM UNVEILING PRESS CONFERENCE
Good Afternoon and welcome to the official team unveiling of the Barry's Tea Cycling Team owned by the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Group. I will now hand over to the ownership's groups chairman, Larry Tanenbaum to say a few words.
LT: Thank you. First of all, I'd like to thank all of you here for joining us at the start of our cross-Atlantic adventure.
What I want to do is say a few words about why we felt we should set-up a professional cycling team. As some of you may know, we have a very good base of Sports ownership within the North American market, with the Toronto based franchises in the NHL, MLS and NBA.
We felt the time was right therefore to board our base internationally and we felt a cycling squad would be the best way of doing so. Obviously, to be a successful Pro Cycling team, you need to have a base in Europe and we always felt Ireland was the perfect base to set this up.
Barry's Tea were very interested in the project from the start and we were delighted to link up with them as primary sponsors from the start. I'll now hand you over to the spokeswoman of Barry's Tea, Eimear Heenan, to explain their reasons for getting involved.
EH: Thanks Larry. Well, Barry's Tea is not only one of the biggest selling brands of tea in Ireland, but also with ex-patriots in the UK and North America. Cycling gives us the opportunity to expand our global brand in a sport with very successful Irish links with the likes of Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche. Partnering ourselves with North American owners also allows us to extend our links with the North American arm of our business and hopefully we can have a very long, happy and successful partnership.
Eimear Heenan of Barry's Tea there. We now enter the crux of our evening with first the unveiling of the uniform and the squad itself. First our kit:
Now here are our team that will represent us in 2012. Starting with a Canadian Rider who has finished sixth in the Tour De France, RYDER HESJEDAL
Next is an Irishman who finished ninth in the UCI Rankings last season, DAN MARTIN
A rider we have big hopes for having a big, long-term future with us is American, ANDREW TALANSKY
Former Young Jersey winner and Maglia Rosa wearer of the Giro d'Italia, RICHIE PORTE
The man that finished tenth in that same Giro in 2010, Croat, ROBERT KISERLOVSKI
Next, a man who tenth in Paris-Roubaix last year, MATT HAYMAN
Former Paris-Roubaix winner, STUART O' GRADY
Young Italian Sprinter, DAVIDE APPOLLONIO
Former Podium finisher in the Giro and the man that finished 6th last year, JOSE RUJANO
A man who has basically done everything in the sport and one of our road captains, ALEXANDER VINOKOUROV
The German Climber with powerful knees...CHRISTIAN KNEES
Tour de France Stage Winners, from France, CHRISTOPHE RIBLON and BRICE FEILLU
Next up is Basqueman, PABLO URTASUN
Now comes our African division. Namibian DAN CRAVEN and Eritrean, DANIEL TEKLEHAIMANOT
The rest of our Canadian riders, KEVAN LACOMBE, DOMINIQUE ROLLIN, RYAN ANDERSON, HUGO HOULE, SEBASTIAN SALAS, MARTIN GILBERT and road captain, MICHAEL BARRY
And Finally. The rest of our Irish riders, FELIX ENGLISH, SEAN DOWNEY, ANDREW ROCHE, MATTHEW BRAMMEIER and road captain, DAVID MCCANN
We shall now open it up to questions from you guys: |

PRESS CONFERENCE QUESTIONS
Given what has come out in recent weeks in L'Equipe. Do you really think Hesjedal can win the tour?
First of all, we are extraordinary upset that those details have been leaked. The source of the leak has been found and we have dealt with that situation.
However, the details of what has been made public have been blown out of all proportion. Nowhere have we announced at any stage that our goal for 2012 is to win the Tour de France at all, let alone specifically with Ryder Hesjedal.
However, we do believe that Ryder has it in him to win a Grand Tour right now. Whether that is the Tour de France remains to be seen.
Why is Nick Roche not a Barry's rider?
Well, we have to be up front and say we are openly disappointed that Nick isn't here, but that is the situation presented to us because of the draft system.
Did we want Nick Roche? YES. Comprehensively so.
Did we want him more than Dan Martin or Ryder Hesjedal? A difficult call at the time but we went the way we did and as we expected Nick was not there come Round 3.
I take it that there are similar reasons why the team didn't sign Top TTist Svein Tuft?
Well, you have pretty much hit the nail on the head there. Within any draft, you have to have a strategy of what you want to do, what you are looking to achieve and then, using that, work out a value of every single rider in the world to you.
Unfortunately, just like with Nick and Guillaume Boivin who is another rider that we seriously would have liked, they were drafted by other teams before they became the best value pick to our organisation.
Beside the Tour de France and the Canadian races, what are the teams top goals?
We have to reiterate once again that WE have never at any stage said that the Tour de France is a specific goal for our team other than the very obvious fact that it is the biggest race in our sport.
Our goal, pure and simple, is to stay in the World Tour by avoiding relegation, purely through our own ability. We feel that yes, the best way of doing that is to WIN a Grand Tour. And Yes, as an organisation, we feel that Ryder is our best bet to do that.
How do we best feel we can do that? Well, as you can see, our squad make up is full of excellent stage racers and climbers. To use Poker speak, we are going 'all-in' on one Grand Tour. In terms of how many of a team's best riders you have at the same Grand Tour, peaking at the same time, you will never have seen anything like it. We have not fully worked out the squad list for the Tour we are targeting but do not be surprised if Ryder is supported by Dan (Martin), Tas (Richie Porte), Drew (Andrew Talansky), Bobby (Robert Kiserlovski), Vino (Alexander Vinokourov) and Jose Rujano. And all importantly, they are all on board and happy to do so.
And before you ask. No, I'm not going to tell you whether that will be the Giro, Tour or Vuelta. You'll KNOW when the squad list comes out.
Isn't that an horrific gamble?
Yes, it's a huge gamble. But sometimes number 0 comes up on the roulette wheel. Sometimes the 100/1 shot wins. It's not as significant a gamble as that. The pieces are in place to do the job and trust me, the pieces in place are good enough to do the job otherwise they wouldn't be standing here behind me.
Are you going to ignore the classics then?
*Looks at Matt Hayman & Stuart O' Grady*
'Do you want to go strangle her or should I?'
*laughs*
Seriously though, I understand the question, or rather, what you want the question to be. It's a valid point too. We don't have a great 7 or 8 man roster to send to a one-day classic and we don't have a (Tom) Boonen or a Spartacus (Fabian Cancellara) to win one their own.
What we do have however is a man in Stuart O' Grady who has won Paris-Roubaix and another in Matt Hayman who had a top ten finish last year. With that, I believe top ten's in at least one classic will no doubt be possible.
Is there enough media attention in Canada for the team?
We are a Summer Sport, in the main. There is no Hockey that time of year and lets be honest, if Ryder wins a GT, what else is there to keep him off every back page in Canada? Answer that question and you answer your own question.
Any more questions? (PM ME) |

BARRY PRESS STATEMENT
Following a horrific start to the campaign, we feel it important to step forward and outline where we stand at this stage.
We want to reiterate our stated aim that we want to win a Grand Tour with Ryder Hesjedal this year and that is something we can still do. Victory in that will make a huge difference to the points situation which at this point in time is worrying.
Remember though, we have only had four World Tour races. We had a relatively successful Town Down Under with a couple of top ten's although our main aim of winning the King of the Mountains with Hugo Houle was snatched away from us on the last day. Meanwhile, Tirreno-Adriatico, Paris-Nice and Milan-San Remo were all unqualified disasters, which was a huge disappointment.
It is felt the need for this statement is required as we come into the cobbled classics season with such a big gap at the bottom. This is because out squad is not geared around this section of the season and we don't want to put any undue pressure on the squad at this time.
Top ten's are still possible with the likes of Matt Hayman & Stuart O' Grady but we are fully aware that we will still be bottom by the time of the Ardennes classics but we still have every major aim for this season more than possible for us to succeed.

Here at Barry's Maple Leaf. We would like to congratulate Andrew Talansky on finishing second in the Criterium International, winning the young riders jersey in the process.
However, we must also express our bewildered amazement at Jakab Zoltan's performance, especially as he is a rider who no-one has heard of before. |
