@Ian Buttler - Yes, didn't want to create two stage teams and then do a whole ton of swapping, there might be some depending on the stage races profile and stages that we do some swapping. And yes, I was suprised that we got the first two requests accepted thought I loose one.

@fcancellara - Thanks, I am hoping to build a story that will show the struggles of a new team and the triumph of being promoted (crosses fingers) and then getting first invites to the Grand Tours to winning a stage or a jersey in said Grand Tours.

I wish you much luck with it. It'll be great if it works out the way you want it Wink

Ronde van Drenthe

Dear Century 21 Development Team,

We are sorry, but this year we cannot accept your request to parcipate in our race. We already have many high profile teams that have shown interest in the race and we are looking to give our fans the best possible race. Your team is unknown even though you have Nacer Bouhanni, we don't know how the team as a whole will race.

We'll see for next year if you wish to take part in our race how your team ranked on the Continental tour.

Training Camp Bumpy Ride

The following riders have been informed they are to attend a training camp in Oudenaarde, Belgium. We tried to get Ronde van Drenthe race, but our request was not accepted. So we scheduled you a cobblestone training camp to help build the legs early in the season.

This camp is for cobblestones and we hope that all riders used to them and ready for the Northern Classics. Cobblestones are that one surface that a rider need to be familiar with so that he won get uncomfortable out there on the race and not be able to give 100%.

@Ian Butler - Yeah, my first rejection, but I am sure there will be more down the road, I just need to get the kind of races my team can showcase their talents at and some races just to keep legs race ready for the bigger races later on.

New Zealand Cycle Classic - Stage 1

Massey University (ITT) : 6.5 kms

Team Strategy

We had a great training camp and Kelderman and Bouhanni are in good condition. Just go out there and give it your best, its an individual time trial (Prologue).

Race Results

Century 21 came out in their first race and sent a message to the Continental division that they are here to compete in their inaugural season. They posted the fastest time on the day twice. Julien Vermote just edged out fellow team mate Wilco Kelderman by 64 one hundredths of a second. Hugo Sabido and Filipe Cardoso finished 2' off the pace and find themselves back of the leaders jersey by 3' after one stage.

Interview Danny Smith, Director Sportif of Century 21 Development Team

CN: Can you tell us your goals when putting together this team?

DS: I wanted to make sure we had a team to tackle the Stage Races and then another team that was more geared towards the one day classics.

CN: You take 1-2 in your first race, what can we expect from this team in 2012?

DS: We are not going to win them all, Yes our first race was a huge success, and we brought a team that is capable of winning.

CN: Your team is based out of the United States, but your best two riders are from France and Netherlands?

DS: As you know the peleton is a very international sport and we looked for riders whom would sign with us and didn't look at nationality, we went after the best riders we could get.

CN: Why is your team so young? The oldest rider is only 21 years of age.

DS: We are just a development squad and depending on how we do as a team, we will look to development young talent.

Palmerston North - Apiti - Palmerston North : 144.4 kms

Team Strategy

Lets not get a big head, yes we kicked butt yesterday, but there are plenty of riders here who are showing good form and who can beat you if your not paying attention. We need to protect the yellow jersey and Bouhanni for a bunch sprint. If a break should get a lot of time, we'll chase them down.

Alright guys, lets get out there and win this one. Petit your the lead out and I need Schelling to guard Bouhanni and also get the water bottles.

Race Results

Today went as we planned, there was a break away looking for the points out on the road. It was a five man break away, and they stayed out with T. Hayakawa (PPO) the last rider getting caught with 18kms.

Century 21 was unable to defend the yellow jersey today, as Filipe Cardoso (Efapel - Glassdrive) won the bunch sprint, who started the day just 3" back of Julien Vermote. Nacer Bouhanni taking second on todays staged moved up to 11th overall, just 24" back of Filipe Cardoso.

The break was attacking each other and started to fall apart.

Filipe Cardoso (Efapel - Glassdrive) would take the bunch sprint getting to the line just ahead of Nacer Bouhanni (Century 21 Development Team) by a wheel. An Post - Sean Kelly takes the next three positions to finish the top 5 with Nico Eeckhout, Sam Bennett, and Gediminas Bagdonas.
