AMEXpc has signed two additonal signings bringing their total roster count to 14.

Sylvain Chavanel (FRA) is a veteran of the Pro Tour and is a very nice addition to our team. The senior member of the team will provide the stability and voice of reason on the team bus. He will be the leader of our hilly races.

Patrick Gretsch (GER) joins fellow Germans Kupfernagel and Selig on the roster. Patrick will be our #1 time trialer.

There is one more possible signing today as Carlos Barredo (ESP) and his agent have promised a decision today. Barredo will be part of Chavanel's Punchuer squad. We expect him to be our best rider on the hills.

If Barredo signs, that will leave just 5 or 6 roster spots open. Unconfirmed rumors are that American sprinter Jake Keough is being pursued as the leadout man for Tyler Farrar. It is also rumored that AMEXpc is seeking another very high level veteran rider. Nobody is ready to mention any names.

Carlos Barredo (ESP) notified AMEXpc that he has signed the contract we offered. Carlos will be AMEXpc's top punchuer. He will also be the top domestique on the tours we plan to ride.

AMEXpc insiders report that no additonal signings are due today. They have confirmed that American sprinter Jake Keough will fly to Salt Lake City to meet in person with the AMEXpc manager on the 13th. Keough could be the final piece to AMEXpc new sprint squad.

Jake Keough (USA) was just spotted leaving the Great American Hotel in Salt Lake City with a big smile on his face. Keough was repoted to have been offered 180,000 Euros to sign for the 2013 season. When asked about his talks with AMEX Pro Cycling, Keough commented;

Mr. Haly made me an offer I was very happy with and yes we have signed a contract. We also talked about my role as the key leadout/set up man for the AMEX sprint train. They have two of the best sprinters in the PCT in Kupfernagel and Farrar and I am excited to be working with them.

When asked if he had ever considered signing with a CT team where he could have been the lead sprinter Keough shrugged;

It is always fun to see yourself as the go to guy, but I would rather ride in the best races I can. AMEXpc will be targeting the Americas tour where I am familiar with all of those races. I am just very happy with my new role and with AMEXpc.

AMEXpc insiders say that there are two more possible signings later today. Negociations are still on-going but the team seems optimistic that both riders can be signed.

One of the riders is reported to be Fabien Taillefour a French cobbler who is also very strong on the flats. The other rider is still unknown. The only rumors leaking out are that if he can be signed it will be a very important addition to the team.

AMEXpc currently has 16 riders under contract along with the 2 that they will be meeting with later today would bring the roster to 18. One rider mentioned very early in the off season as a very good domestique for the teams planned presence on the cobbled circuits was Grégory Rast. Rast is a big engine flats rider with some skills on the cobbles. Rast has not been known to be talking with AMExpc but when this newspaper called him recently he told us

I know where I would like to ride this season and if I do not have an offer in the next couple of days I make a call to them and see what we can do.

In other news the team manager and trainers were joined at dinner last night by Anthony Colby, last years winner of the Tour of Utah. Colby was not re-signed by AMEXpc during rider renewals. Colby seemed in good spirits. Colby has stated that he is unsure if he wants to ride again in 2013. He is open to offers, but says he also has a couple of irons in the fire.

After dinner he left for the airport and boarded a plane heading for Munich. Was he on his way to meet with one of the CT teams or was he pursuing the offer offer he may have had? He was over heard telling AMEXpc's team manager Martyn Haly that he will be back no later than Sunday. We wish Tony well no matter what he chooses to do.

We have 19 riders signed and we are currently bidding on five (5) more riders. We hope to enter the season with 22-24 riders under contract.

As you can see AMEXpc has made a major refocus from the D2 Climbing team of 2012 to a Sprint and Cobbles team in 2013. Also of note is the additional of five Germans to the squad.

With the transfer period ending shortly we will publish a team preview before
Christmas.

Thats a nice team Grin
I like the cobblers/sprinters mixture especially the cobblers who can also sprint which should give you an advantage if they stay at the front group.

Reliable sources within the Great American Hotel where the AMEXpc team is holed up report that within the next few hours four new riders will be formally signing 2013 contracts. Officials will neither confirm or deny these rumors, nor will they release the names of any riders they are still in negociations with.

Team manager, Martyn Haly has confimed that the team is still having talks with 4 or 5 riders. "None of them are stars, some of them are prospects and some of them are helpers."

Watching the signings unfold, AMEXpc has already locked up five German riders. Our sources are telling us three of the riders still under consideration are in fact more German riders.

Mike Arron Egger, a 20 year old climber, who has potential to develop as a Mountain or a Hills rider or possible as both. Speculation is that he may just sign a Stagiare contract with the hope he could get a larger contract in 2014.

Nico Schoch is just one of several young German sprinters. AMEXpc also appears to be planning to sign him to a Stagiare contract also for 2013.

Jan Dieteren has been contacted by several PCT and CT teams. There is no consensus that AMEX has the inside track, but with the transfer season ending very soon his fate will be known. At 20 years old Dieteren should develop into a solid punchuer with the potential to be a sub-leader in the PCT. His signing salary will be high and only time will tell where he settles.

Mr. Haly's reference to helpers still being sought seems to confirm that AMEX may be ready to sack a couple of riders. Carlos Alberto Ospina seems to be the most likely candidate at age 31 but who the other one might be is really hard to speculate.

When AMEXpc signed Michael Kurth, a strong helper on both the flats and the cobbles, Martyn Haly comments, "Now if we could just lock up another helper for the uphill days......"

AMEXpc has just released details of four more rider signings.

Nico Schoch is a 22 year old German sprinter. After sevel days of discussion Nico has agreed to a Stagiare contract of 20,000 euros. AMEX sees him as a future set up or leadout man.

Mike Aaron Egger is another young German. Just 20 years old Egger is a budding climber. He has also signed a Stagiare contract for 25,000 euros. AMEX sees Egger as a future climbing domestique for both the hills and the mountains.

Willem Van Den Eynde is a young Belgian rider. Not on many other team's radars, AMEX see him as a future flat terrain pacer/chaser and posibly a breakawy threat. Discussions with Willem and his agent centered around the type of contract he would sign. After talking over AMEX's development plans, it was agreed that he would sign a full contract and continue his growth in the PCT. Willem signed for 50,000 euros.

The final rider signed today is a 27 year old Polish rider Pawel Cieslik. Cieslik signed for 50,000 euros and looks to be the uphill domestique the team was looking for.

Martyn Haly also confirmed that Carlos Alberto Ospina is on his way out. "He will either be moved to a CT team where his puncher skills can still be effective or he will be given his out right release allowing him to negociate with any team.

When asked what is the status of the German punchuer, Jan Dieteren, Haly asnwered: "We have high hopes that he will sign a contract with AMEXpc in the very near future. We believe we have an agreement in principle but just a few details are still being worked out."

So with the signing of the four riders today and the exiting of Ospina, AMEXpc appears to have 22 riders committed and they are waiting for a final decison on Jan Dieteren.

When I asked Mr. Haly to confirm those numbers he said: "Well I think we plan to enter the season with 24 riders under contract. Dieteren still has to sign that would bring us to 23. We are also hoping we can convince Daniel Klemme to sign a Stagaire contract. With so little time left in the transfer season a long negociation will not be possible. We have made him an offer and he has promised to get back to us with his intentions.

Daniel Klemme is 22 years old and another of the German sprinting prospects.

A full team preview is going to be published in this Sunday's Rocky Mountain News. At that time we will know the status of Dieteren and Klemme.

AMEXPC TEAM PREVIEW
PART ONE -- THE SPRINTS

AMEXpc has 6 pure sprinters on thier roster. They are balanced with 3 veterans all with Pro Tour experience and 3 youngesters just starting thier careers. When Team Manager Martyn Haly was asked how they targeted thier sprinters he went into detail.

"Sprint trains need to be very tight knit. They need be able to communicate with looks, body language and very subtle movements. We believe to become good at those skills you need to have life long common bonds. To that end we signed six sprinters who came from just 2 countries. We have a very promising group of Americans and Germans."

Four of these sprinters appear targeted to be the actual final sprinters. Danilo Kupfernagel [FL74, RC78, SP80, AC80] looks to be the top dog in all but the American races. In the American races look for Tyler Farrar [FL72, RC76, SP79, AC77] to take the final run for the finish line. Jake Keough [FL72, RC76, SP78, AC75] will be the sprint leader for the C2 races. 23 yr old German sprinter Theo Reinhardt might get a chance to test his speed and acceleration in 1 or 2 of the C2 races where Keough will have conflicts.

Good leadout men are almost as important as a team's final sprinters. AMEX spent a good deal of thier budget to insure that thier sprinters will have a good chances to suceed. Farrar will be the top candidate to leadout Kupfernagel and in the American races Keough will likely leadout Farrar. Those three will carry the workman's load for this sprint squad but they are by no means the only sprint weapons AMEX can display.

Two of AMEX's cobblers were signed not only because they can ride cobbles but also because they can, in key races, be excellent set up/leadout men for Kupfernagel and/or Farrar. Pro Tour veterans Bernhard Eisel [FL76, RC77, SP77, AC74] and Matti Breschel [FL75, RC77, SP77, AC73] can step up to help AMEXpc put together a Pro Tour level sprint train.

We already highlighted Theo Reinhardt but he is not the only young German sprinter on the squad. Rüdiger Selig will get his race days as he grows from his 2.35 expereince level. Nico Schoch signed a stagiare contract and hopes to see a few races at the end of the season.

Looking to field a complete sprinting unit, AMEX also made sure to sign four domestiques who will be Pacers & Chasers on the flat sprint stages/races. Fabien Taillefour [FL77, ST70], Yannick Stoltz [FL78, ST66], Bart Veyt [FL71, ST70] and Patrick Gretsch [FL71, ST69] will all see support time with the sprint squad.

Martyn Haly summed his sprinters up as "We expect to challenge all of the PCT sprint teams, but it takes years to develop the teamwork needed to excel. We will win a few and we should be top 10 consistent with out sprinters in 2013."

Sprinter to watch for:
[b] Theo Reinhardt
has explosive acceleration already at a PCT level and he is just starting his career. He will surprise people.

I like the strenght of sprint train, definitely stronger than mine and I think Kupfernagel will have Napolitano running scared in Berlin. I secretly hope that your team will help us massively by doing the legwork, and then we'll try and leech off your train. Pfft

Mhaley45
Ah Yes Danilo -vs- Danilo. It will be fun to see them face-off, but Kupfernagel is just 25 years old and Napolitano has reached his fullest potential. As much as I can dream that we could win a sprint like that I doubt we are ready so quickly. I will be happy if we can finish in his slipstream this year, go wheel to wheel next year and then surpass him in two years.

AMEXpc 2013 Team Preview
Part Two -- The Cobblers

AMEXpc is training so that they are ready to ride over 100 kilometers of cobbled roads in 2013. With those expectations you might expect that AMEX has signed several riders from Belgium. Well that is not the case. AMEX choose to search for cobblers who would be effective multi terrain riders. Martyn Haly, AMEX's team manager, explained why they took this approach.

"The Northern Classic are some of the best races in all of the sport, but the reality is that they comprise only a few race days each season. We did not want to have one dimension cobblers only able to plod along at the back of the peleton the rest of the season. We wanted riders who will contribute on each and every day they race."

The unquestioned leader of AMEX's cobblers is the veteran Austrian rider Bernhard Eisel [FL76, ST76, CB78, SP77]. Bernhard is expect to challenge in every cobble race he rides. He has the great combination of talents that while not expectional in any should be consistent and bring us a handfull of podium finishes. From Denmark, Matti Breschel [FL75, ST76, CB76, SP77] will be Eisel's sergeant at arms, protecting him to the finish line. Fabien Taillefour [FL77, ST70, CB78, SP54] has demonstrated he can ride the cobbles but he does not have the full range of talents as Eisel or Breschel. AMEX sees Fabien as setting the pace at the front of the peleton during the early sections of the cobble races. Super domestique, Michael Kurth [FL73, ST74, CB73, SP73] will be key support for both Eisel and Breschel.

The final cobbler on the squad is the young American prospect, Robert Bush [FL68, ST69, CB71, SP57] he will be riding as a professional under his 1st contract. AMEX hopes to ride in 1 or 2 cobble reaces on the C2 circuit. These races are where Bush will get his opportunity to show his future leadership skills. In the HC and C1 races Bush will be part of the squad learning from Esiel and Breschel.

AMEX does not expect many if any wins in the cobble races in 2013 but they will be stressing consistency and the need to push for top 5 and top 10 results.

-----------------------------------------------------
AMEXpc's 2013 Team Preview will continue on the 27th with the Punchuers.

AMEXpc 2113 Team Preview
Part Three -- The Punchuers

[b]AMEXpc's focus in 2013
will be on the flats (Sprints and Cobbles), that however does not mean we will be ignoring the hilly classics and the small tours. With limited funding for our 1st season in the PCT, AMEX has decided to not seek for wins or podiums on the hilly courses. Instead we will seek for consistency and shoot for top 10 and top 20 finishes as often as possible.

Carlos Barredo [HL75, ST75, SP59, FGT83] will be our most explosive punchuer. Without sprinter speed or acceleration, Barredo will attempt to get away from the peleton and work hard to stay away. Targeting some of the 2nd tier hilly classics, Barredo hopes to score points consistently and surprise on ocasion.

Pro Tour veteran Sylvain Chavanel [HL74, ST73] has slipped from his elite levels but his experience in the peleton and leadership will prove valuable. American rider Matt Busche [HL74, ST70] will be support for Barredo & Chavanel.

The future on the hilly tracks will fall to 20 year old German rider Jan Dieteren [HL70, ST69] Dieteren is projected to be a solid point earner at the PCT level or an elite domestique on the PT tour. In 2013 Dieteren will see lots of racing and work to develop his talents.

Matti Breschel [HL70, ST76, SP77], already highlighted as a key rider for our cobbled races, will also see some important domestique time in support of Carlos Barredo in the more difficult Hilly classics. Also targeted for domestic duties on the hilly tracks will be Polish rider Pawel Cieslik [HL72, ST72].

Hilly classics are not going to be the highlights of the AMEXpc 2013 calander. Our best hopes are to steal some top 10 finishes by Carlos Barredo and maybe even a podium or two by slipping into successful late attacks that stay away from sprinting finishlines.

We will also be looking for Jan Dieteren to show growth and the skills to support Pawel Cieslik and Matt Busche in a few C2 level races.

---------------------------------------------------------

Preview presentation Four will feature Time Trials and Domestiques.

AMEXpc is splitting thier talents for the Tour Down Under.

Punchuers:
Carlos Barredo [Leader] will be looking to attack early on the two Hilly stages
Sylvain Chavanel Plans to stay with the peleton and place as high as possible

Sprinters:
Rudiger Selig & Theo Reinhardt both young German sprinters. Whoever is strong at the end will take the leadout

Domestiques:
Fabien Tallifour Chaser if we need it and set up man for the sprints
Michael Kurth pacer/chaser and #2 on the sprint train

Sprint train:
1 Taillefour [FL/77]
2 Kurth [FL/73, SP/73 & AC/73]
3 Reinhardt [SP/72 & AC/78]
4 Selig [SP/73 & AC/75]

Expectations:
1st PCT race will be more about getting to know each other. Barredo could steal a stage if he gets overlooked. Our sprinters will be happy if we can form a sprint train, getting a top 10 on one of the 4 flat stages would be big success.

Tour Down Under Stage #2

We were much more competative on the hills than we were with our young sprinters in stage #1.

All three punchuers are just +0'20" -- Chavanel (28th), Barredo (40th) and Jan Dietern (41st)

Tomorrow is another flat sprint day. I would love to see more from our sprinters, but you only gain XP by riding. We are especially pleased by 20 year old Jan Dieteren in just his 1st professional race hanging in with some very good punchuers. If he rides the next hilly day as well as stage #2 he will have had a great 1st race.

AMEXpc's early season schedule is quite light. They only had 1 race in January - the Tour Down Under - and that's where they finished down under with zero points and tied for last place. February has just 3 races on the schedule. First up will be the Tour de San Luis. AMEX's sporsors want them to do well on the American Tour this season and San Luis is thier first stop.

Thier second race of the month will be the first test of thier cobble squad heading to Africa anf the Bahir Dar. Lots of rough riding conditions here so this should be a major test and AMEX expects some solid results.

Finally at the end of the month come another cobble race the GP Gisborn. More of a punchuers race but with some cobbles mixed in.

By the end of February AMEXpc hopes to have crawled thier way out of the PCT cellar an up to the top 25.

March is when the season really ramps up with five races including the team's first 2 HC races of the season.
