New Zealand Cycle Classic: Stage 2

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/NZStage2Profile.jpg

The profile of Stage 2 was relatively flat but with enough lumps and bumps to give prospective escapees some hope for success. Our tactic was to ride aggressively, get into the breaks, and then look to Briggs if it came down to a bunch sprint.

Sulzberger takes the second KOM sprint

Sulzberger tried hard to get into the early breakaway. Despite being involved numerous attempts, however, the bunch kept bringing the break back. Nevertheless, Bernie managed to take 2nd place at the first KOM and then win the second.

The bunch finally let a break go clear

A break of six riders was eventually allowed to establish itself, including Raleigh's Horton. With the 30km to go the gap was just over three minutes and the break's success seemed to hang in the balance. However, the catch was made with 8km, and the sprinters began to position themselves for the impending dash for the line. Briggs locked himself onto Eeckhout's wheel.

Jorgensen surprises the bunch

Rene Jorgensen (Christina Watches) had other ideas though and launched an impressive turn of speed to burst from the peloton with just 5km to go. Our man Holloway seized on this opportunity and set off in pursuit.

Jorgensen leads Holloway under the red kite

Amazingly, Jorgensen was still clear as he went under the red kite. Holloway was closing fast, just 9 seconds back, whilst another Christina Watches rider, Reihs, had also escaped from the speeding peloton, and was another 18 seconds back. This promised to be a tense final kilometre!

The escapees dash for the line

As the approached the line, Jorgensen still held a slender lead over Holloway and then Reihs, but the peloton was almost upon them...

Jorgensen takes Stage 2

...Jorgensen held on for victory, with Holloway taking a fine second place. Reihs held on for third place, whilst Briggs was the second quickest in the bunch, crossing the line in fifth.

Sabido held onto the GC, remaining one second ahead of Cardoso. Holloway's time bonuses meanwhile meant that he is now up to third place, just two seconds back and also holds the young riders jersey. Suzlberger's early work on the hills earned him second place in the KOM competition. A good day's work for Team Raleigh.

New Zealand Cycle Classic: Stage 3

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/NZStage3Profile.jpg

A few hills in the middle section of today's route again offered hope to those looking to breakaway or pick up KOM points, but the the fast men would no doubt be keen to ensure a bunch finish after letting yesterday's late attackers escape.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/HolohanKOM1Stage3.jpg
The day's break reaches the first KOM

A break formed quite easily today, represented by Raleigh rider Liam Holohan, together with Stevenson (VPC), Ribeiro (EFG) and Rutkievicz (CCC). Holohan took the first KOM but could only come second in the second and third KOMs. By the end of the day he would be level with Stevenson in the KOM competition with 13 points a piece.

Like yesterday, the break was caught with around 8km to go and the bunch looked set for the competition's first mass sprint.

Holloway goes again

Inspired by yesterday's late attack, Holloway decided to see if his success could be repeated, and he sprang from the bunch with 4.5 km remaining. The bunch had obviously not learned its lesson and once again was slow to respond.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Hollowayredkite.jpg
Holloway leads with 1km to go

This enabled Holloway to build a lead of 28 seconds with just 1km remaining, but could he hang on for Raleigh's first victory of the season?

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Hollowaycelebrates.jpg
Holloway celebrates

The answer was a resounding yes. Holloway held off the bunch to take the stage victory and the overall classification to boot! Von Hoff led the peloton home, followed closely by Eeckhout. Raleigh also now hold the lead in the points, mountain and young rider competitions.

What a nice victory! Banana

lennybernstein
@Ian Butler - thanks! Yes, a very nice, unexpected victory so early on in the season.

New Zealand Cycle Classic: Stage 4

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/NZStage4Profile.jpg

This was a short stage that had 'bunch sprint' written all over it. Our aim was to control the stage, defend Holloway's GC lead and set Briggs up to take some of the bonus seconds available at the finish to prevent Holloway's rivals gaining too much time.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage4Break.jpg
The day's break

We let a break of seven go clear. None of the riders were particularly dangerous, but nonethelss Horton and Holt tapped out a steady pace at the front of the peloton to keep the gap in check. A number of sprinters team joined in the pacemaking as the race neared its conclusion and the inevitable catch was made with 15km left.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage42kmtogo.jpg
Briggs (2nd) sucks Richeze's wheel

Briggs found himself on the wheel of Team Nippo's sprinter Mauro Abel Richeze. Richeze went to the front early, maybe a bit too early, and so with 2km to go, Briggs was sitting in second wheel...

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage41kmtogo.jpg
The bunch sprints through the red kite

As the peloton swept under the red kite, Richeze and Briggs were beginning to be swamped by the swarm of sprinters behind them. Could Briggs now come round Richeze and drive for the win?

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage4finish.jpg
Obst takes the win

Alas no. It was Obst (Team NSP - Ghost) who took the victory with a perfectly timed sprint. Van Hoff finished second picking him some valuable bonus seconds, moving him up to second overall, just 7 seconds now behind Holloway. Briggs ran out of steam and finished way down in 15th place.

The fight for the general classification is going down to the wire. Tomorrow's short stage will decide Holloway's fate. Meanwhile, Stevenson is still neck and neck with Raleigh's Holohan in the KOM competition, so the team will be fighting on multiple fronts tomorrow.

Hold on to that jersey! You're doing a great job Wink

Brilliant riding from Holloway, keep it going Wink

Nice win.
One advice: black or coulour the names of your riders in the results, so it's easrier for us to see them. And since you use the "table-function", that means you have to bold/colour every thing seperately (place, name, team, time).

God riding. A win under your belt already. Great job.

@Everyone Thanks for the encouragement. Read on below to find out if Holloway held on to the jersey!

@dienblad Thanks for the tip, I will try doing that

New Zealand Cycle Classic: Stage 5

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/NZStage5profile.jpg

So, the final stage of the New Zealand Cycle Classic was another short sprinters stage. With Holohan and Stevenson neck and neck in the Mountains competition, the two KOMs would undoubtedly be decisive.

The big question on everyone's lips though was could Holloway hang on to the overall lead? Or could Chipotle's young sprinter Von Hoff 'Steele' victory (see what I did there?!). The race would surely come down to the bonus seconds on offer at the finish and Von Hoff's form was enough to really worry Holloway.

Raleigh decided to put Holohan into the day's break. The tactic was threefold: to secure the KOM competition, to force competitor teams to do the work in the peloton, and potentially to pick up the bonus seconds available at the finish. Holohan was joined initially joined by seven other riders. Holohan's rival Stevenson was back in the bunch.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Holohanleadsthebreak.jpg
Holohan leads the day's break

As the breakaway approached the first KOM, Stevenson bridged across from the peloton with three others. Luckily for Holohan, this effort left Stevenson unable to compete for the KOM and Holohan picked up maximum points. Holohan could only pick up fourth in the second and final KOM, but once again Stevenson was unable to better this, which meant Holohan was now sure to be crowned King of the Mountains.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/HolohanwinsKOMcomp.jpg

Now could Holloway add the overall victory for Raleigh? MTN and Endura combined well at the front of the peloton to bring back the break with 10km remaining. The stage was set for a battle royale. In a desperate move to deny Von Hoff the bonus seconds he needed, Suzlberger tried a late attack with under 5km to go, mimicking Holloway's moves from Stages 2 and 3.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Sulzbergerlateattack.jpg
Sulzberger attacks!

Endura clearly had their sights set on a victory however and quickly swept Sulzberger back into the bunch. Now it was up to Briggs to try to deny Von Hoff of vital seconds. Endura led the bunch round the final bend with 2km to go. A little further back, Briggs was right on the wheel of green jersey wearer Von Hoff, with Holloway just a little further behind.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Enduraleadoutthesprint.jpg
Endura sweep into the final bend, while Briggs and Holloway mark Von Hoff

As the peloton sped towards the finish with around 750m to go, Endura's Mandri hit the front, with Eeckhout in second and Von Hoff looking menacing in third. Briggs was still on Von Hoff's wheel and now needed to burst past him. Back in around 10th place, Holloway looked out of the reckoning for picking up bonus seconds.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Thesprint.jpg
The deciding sprint was a nail-biter

At the line Eeckhout had enough to come past Mandri and take victory. More crucially, Von Hoff took second with Briggs only managing fourth. Holloway dejectedly crossed the line in 10th.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Eeckhoutwins.jpg
Eeckhout takes the win, while Von Hoff (2nd) picks up valuable bonus seconds

It was desperately close, but in the end Von Hoff had done enough to take the overall, five seconds ahead of Holloway. To rub salt into Raleigh's wounds, Eeckhout's victory gave him enough of a bonus to move into second overall. Nonetheless, Holloway could be proud of his race and a podium position was certainly a fine result in a race that was always going to favour the sprinters.

January News

Team Raleigh - GAC can be very satisfied with their first few races. Bernie Sulzberger can be very proud of his hard-fought fourth place in the Australian Road Race, beating famous names like Matthew Goss and Cadel Evans. Liam Holohan did a fine job of taking the Mountains prize in the New Zealand Cycle Classic. But undoubtedly our rider of the month was Daniel Holloway, who should real daring to take second place on Stage 2 and then go one better the next day with a superb late solo attack. He was very unfortunate in the end not to take the overall too.

Nice riding in New Zealand from Holloway Wink

And Great to see Holohan win the Mountains Classification Wink

@sutty68 Yes I couldn't have wished for a better start. I think Holohan is a great young rider so I was also delighted he could pick up the polka dot jersey!

Tour of South Africa Preview
19.02 - 26.02

The Tour of South Africa, a new race on the cycling calendar, is an 8-day, 7-stage 2.2 Category race. The organisers have plans to eventually turn it into a 9-day, 2.HC event within 5 years and say it will be the “Jewel in the Crown” of Pro Cycling in South Africa.

Stage profiles

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage7Profile.jpg

The race contains five flat stages and two hilly stages. Stage 6 looks like the most challenging stage with an uphill finish and could be decisive in the race for the yellow jersey. But even the flat stages look pretty lumpy.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/SAStartlist.jpg

A relatively small field will start the Tour of South Africa. MTN will no doubt be looking to impress on home soil, and in Reinhardt Janse Van Rensberg they have a rider who will be a real challenger with his good hill climbing skills and a fast finish.

The press also think Fred Rodriguez (Exergy), Rasmussen, Guldhammer (both Christina Watches) and Bajadili (Optum) will be the other men to watch in the race for the overall spoils. Holloway's nemesis from New Zealand, Von Hoff, also starts and will be a threat in bunch finishes.

Raleigh - GAC startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/SARaleighTeam.jpg

After nearly a month since their last competitive race, the Raleigh riders will be lacking in race sharpness. Nevertheless, the sponsors will still be expecting results and GAC are looking to the team to win the KOM competition.

Oliphant will be team's man for the overall classification, although without the sprint finish of riders like Rodriguez and Van Rensberg, he may find it difficult to win much in the way of bonus seconds at the finish line. Sulzberger is our best sprinter, but probably neither has the fitness nor the speed to be a real contender in bunch finishes. The rest of the riders will look to take their chances in breakaways and meet the sponsors' demands for KOM glory.

Tour of South Africa
Race Report

The racing at the Tour of South Africa was fast and furious, set against searing heat and stunning scenery.

Raleigh were keen to ensure that we met the sponsors' objective of winning the polka dot jersey. Hampton infilrated the break on the first stage, picking up valuable KOM points.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/HamptoninbreakSAStage1.jpg
Hampton leads the break on Stage 1

The break was caught comfortably by the peloton and the stage came down to a bunch sprint. Rodriguez (Team Exergy) crossed the line first, edging out sprint rivals Reihs (Christina Watches) and Van Rensberg (MTN - Qhubeka), taking the yellow jersey in the process.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/SAStage1Rodriguezwins.jpg
Rodriguez takes the first stage

Hampton was again busy on the second stage, picking up more intermediate sprint prizes and KOM points. By the end of the day he'd was leading the Mountain's competition and had even picked up enough bonus seconds on the road to move up to 3rd overall.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/HamptonwinssprintStage2SA.jpg
Hampton was in the thick of the action again on Stage 2

Hampton hung on out front until 5km to go, but the peloton made the catch and set things up for another sprint finish. This time Reihs went one better, beating Rodriguez into second. Rodriguez though held on to the lead, tied on time with Reihs.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/ReihswinsSAStage2.jpg

Hampton was yet again in the break on Stage 3 looking to consolidate his KOM lead.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/HamptoninbreakagainSAStage3.jpg
Hampton shows off his polka dots on Stage 3

On a slight rise about 10km from the stage finish, Oliphant made the first serious GC move of the race, making a stinging attack to break clear of the peloton.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Stage3SAOliphantattacks.jpg
Oliphant breaks clear

Oliphant was joined by Bak, the last survivor of the day's break. Meanwhile, the move had caused panic behind, and twelve men had moved clear of the bunch in pursuit. With 6 km left Oliphant and Bak had 30 seconds on the group of dozen riders containing many of the GC favourites: Rodrigeuz, Van Rensberg and Reihs were all there. The pack was another 42 seconds behind.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/ChaosensuesbehindSAStage3.jpg
Oliphant and Bak go for victory on Stage 3

Bak refused to cooperate however and Oliphant fast ran out energy. They were quickly caught by the twelve behind them. But the fourteen remained ahead of the peloton and fought out a closely contested sprint. This time it was Kochetkov (Itera - Katusha) took the spoils, ahead of Van Rensberg's team mate Brown in a photo finish.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/BrownwinsSAStage3.jpg
Brown thinks he's won, but Kochetkov was awarded the stage win after a photo finish

Crucially, Rodriguez took third place and more bonus seconds to consolidate his lead. Oliphant meanwhile finished a fine 7th and moved up to 8th overall, 40 seconds down on Rodriguez.

Stage 4 came down to another bunch sprint. But not before Raleigh's 18 year old Brennan Townshend had a fine day out in the day's break. His main aim was to defend Hampton's KOM lead, but he did such a fine job he ended the day in polka dots himself.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/TownshendinbreakStage4.jpg
Townshend on his way to his first polka dot jersey as a pro

Brown made sure he made amends for his narrow miss the day before, comfortably taking the sprint. Reihs came second, enough to take the lead from Rodriguez who had an off day and finished way down in the bunch.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/BrownwinsagainSAStage4.jpg
Brown comfortably wins Stage 4

The lead changed hands yet again on Stage 5. During the stage Townshend did enough to consolidate his KOM lead during the stage and then yet another bunch finish saw another win for Brown, who edged Rodriguez and (surprisingly) Oliphant in the bunch gallop. This gave Brown enough bonus seconds to earn the leaders jersey, tied on time with Rodriguez. Oliphant was up to 7th.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/BrownwinsOliphant3rdSAStage5.jpg
Brown makes it two wins in two days and takes the overall lead

The general classification was nicely poised then, for Stage 6, the Queen stage of the Tour of South Africa. With a steep uphill finish, a shake up of the GC was expected.

In fact, it was on the second to last col that the GC contenders made their first move. Bajadili attacked on the steep slopes and was followed by a number of contenders including Rodriguez, Oliphant and Van Rensberg.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/SASt6Breakonsecondlastcol.jpg
The GC men make a move

The bunch pulled it all back together before the final short sharp ascent however. Once again, Bajadili launched an attack, and as he passed under the 1km banner, Rodriguez was in hot pursuit, with Oliphant trying to follow in third.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/BajadiliattackSt6.jpg
Bajadili launches another attack on the final slopes

Bajadili held on for a fine victory closely followed by Rodriguez. The pair gained 25 seconds on a pursuing group of 18 riders featuring the other GC contenders and led home by Oliphant.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/BajadiliwinsOli3rdstage6.jpg
Bajadili was too exhausted to celebrate his stage win

Rodriguez therefore retook the overall lead, 37 seconds ahead of Brown, Reihs was third, Kochetkov was 4th and Oliphant now up to 5th.

The final stage, a short criterium, ended in an almost inevitable bunch finish. Rogriguez reinforced his superiority by taking the stage win, comfortably ahead of Reihs and Van Rensberg. Reihs' second place gave him enough bonus time to secure second overall, while Van Rensberg bumped Oliphant down to 6th with his bonus seconds.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/St7Rodriguezwins.jpg
Rodriguez rams home his superiority with a win on the final stage

So, no stage victories this time around for Raleigh. But Oliphant achieved two third places and a great 6th overall. Youngster Townshend meanwhile won another KOM jersey for the team, making the sponsors very happy.
