Vernie Kunze stated today that he was "very proud" of his 30-strong completely Neo team, and extremely excited to see how they would perform in the arena of professional sport.

Vernie sited Manfred Sys and Edik Komalchevsky as riders who could make an immediate impact in their first year, with Manfred aiming for sprints and Edik for cobbled stages.

Ernesto Baretto also commented that Jerry Heng-Suam and Seppo Hjerpe have shown real fighting spirit and commitment to training, whilst Jerry is also reportedly "demon" at going downhill.

The management have voiced their collective belief that within the team there are several riders who could reach the very top of the sport, whilst the majority of the squad may very possibly progress to a high level team.

Sponsor Goals

The team's sponsors have allocated a budget of €864,000 a year which they believe is adequate for the team's needs and expectations.

A very tough ask, as the race is usually a fitness staging ground for WorldTour teams, Hajek Semak stated quite heatedly that it was far too early to be asking such efforts of young athletes.

Californian Road

Given California usually has a good turnout, a top 5 finish may be challenging, and a top10 or 15 would perhaps be more realistic. The team will however, hope to maintain consistency as well as riding with the flair and freedom allowed to unknown, young athletes.

In a one day race, things tend to be a bit more wide open. If the young team can maintain form into October and minimise fatigue, then anything is possible.

Thanks for the support guys! Adomluka, just noticed your avatar Pfft I AM a triathlete, failed epicly at national level (so only so good (swimming)). Fallen off my road bike twice in three years, one because of a break failiure, and one because of black ice. AND I've descended Alpe/Croix de fer/madeleine/the last 100km of that stage to fuente de in the vuelta this year, and not been passed by anyone. We can ride bikes Wink just saying (or maybe I'm a cyclist at heart)

Still, avatar's got some truth to it, made me laugh Embarassed
-Edit- Should be more like, a Lupa (Euskaltel) rider was here *cough* Amets Txurruka

ANYWAY! Rant over... GP de Marseille, was slightly interesting so might take some time to collate.

The peloton meanders through the french countryside

-Post Race Interview with Vernie Kunze-

"It was really a testing the legs kinda day, we don't really have a man for the hills as of yet so we thought about a breakaway. As it was, the guys missed the jump. The interesting stuff happened when with about 30km and one hill to go, it all came back together and Manfred found himself still well placed in the peloton.
"Seppo had a moment of real inspiration, when he persuaded the guys to work on the front on the final hill, they held it really nicely, so that the other teams could catch the attackers on the descent."

Ernesto Baretto interjects "Then stuff got really hairy, on the race radio we are being told there is a big crash, 80 plus riders held up. Apparently Amets Txurruka and Sandy Casar touch wheels near the front, whole peloton comes down."

img405.imageshack.us/img405/5108/img1sd.jpg

"Yeah, the wet roads and technical descent made stuff crazy at that speed. Hannu and Tommy was caught up in it, but only bumps and bruises. What it did do throw was throw the race a bit open, and dissuade people from taking risks."

The race ended in an (uphill) sprint finish! Marnix Dirikx did a fantastic job of positioning Manfred Sys on the wheels of Sammy Dumoulin, but in the end the hills had just taken too much out of Manfred, and he could only finish 10th in a race won by "Roni Mallomin" of Cat Racing

img703.imageshack.us/img703/3038/img3hh.jpg

The team was reportedly ecstatic at scoring ContinentalTour points on their first outing, with Vernie lauding above all else the sound race tactics and quick thinking that the eight men brought to the race in Marseille.

GP de Marseille

8 Injured in Mass Crash

In the GP de Marseille today, a clashing of wheels between Amets Txurruka and Sandy Casar left some 95 riders on the tarmac or stranded behind the rush for the line. 8 of those withdrew from the race, being:

Jorge Azanza - SuperCor
Marco Santambrogio - Planet Poon 2
Benjamin Giraud - La Pomme-Marseille
Wesley Sulzberger - Matmut - Porsche
William Dugan - Team KOO
Ian Stannard - Etihad
Nicolas Edet - Matmut - Oreca
Benni Kong - Team CAT

Most of the riders sustained broken wrists and fractured hands, although Dugan fractured his coccyx, and Kong broke a rib. Wesley Sulzberger was the worst affected, with a broken neck that could leave him out of competition for a couple of months.

Tommeke Thommikksen’s Blog

It does seem rather ominous that even at this very early stage of the season, there has been mass-pile-up after mass-pile-up; and this is without Cavendish or Feillu racing. Riders will blame the route, the bottlenecking of the final straight, the weather, the road surface and the organiser, but the fact is, sprinting is becoming more and more dangerous due to the careless and often reckless attitude of young sprinters. Such is their drive to win, that they see the finish line through a set of blinkers, and weave from one side of the road to another knocking down riders like bowling pins. More often than not the offender also crashes, and it is high time for them to learn that old sage of wisdom – ‘To finish first, first you have to finish.’
