STAGE 2 VOLTA AO ALGARVE
With a profile not very different from stage 1, we have two 3rd category climbs, the last one 45 kms to the end, with the last of the stage not being completely flat.

The team strategy shouldn’t change to much, controlling any break and trying to drop the sprinters. Boonen seemed too strong yesterday and he is now the main favourite, while wearing the yellow jersey.

Chris Froome lost more than 10 minutes yesterday, indicating that his fitness, as well as his goals for this season, are far away.
Daniel Martin, also lost 8 minutes yesterday, and falls back today on the first difficulty of the day.

As the first third of the race concludes, seems Agostinho is paying for his effort yesterday and his sensations are awfull. Madrazo is helping him. Bauke Mollema also lost his ambitions for the GC yesterday, and falls out the peloton before the end of the first categorie 3 climb.
There is a 5 guy escapee with 2 minutes on the 78 men peloton: Lemoine, Van Summeren, Tiernan-Locke, Bertolini and Dumoulin. Only the last one have lost time yesterday, so Movistar and QuickStep are chasing hard.

French wonder kid, Pinot, closes the peloton. He has lost 2’30 on stage 1, just like Basso.
With 31km to go the break has 2’52 on the peloton.
Gilbert has fallen!! Big fish involved: Hinault, Di Marchi, Zabriskie, Gatto, M. Cardoso, Nordhaug, Izaguirre,Porte, Roche, Van Avermaet, Txurruka, Galdos, Capecchi.

With 4km to go, Tiernan Locke tries to resist as the Movistar train is speeding up lead by Madrazo, with Plaza, Agostinho and Costa on his back.
Meanwhile it was Dumoulin who managed to escape, Plaza launches the sprint..
…entering the last km Boonen explodes through everyone including Dumoulin, Agostinho is now trying to bring Rui Costa. Simon tries to follow Boonen, with Nuyens, Di Luca, Barredo, Chavanel and Riblon well placed…
…Simon beats Boonen! We need photo finish to understand it. Costa sprinted a bit too late, but managed to get to the 3rd place.
Agostinho ended up doing a good job, although he was not feeling as good as yesterday, he finished 13th. On overall he is still well placed, as everything is still open with the big stage tomorrow being decisive.

Today Agostinho had the visit from his family. His wife and his 2 kids visited him and gave him extra energy. Since the beginning of the year that he was been on travel with the team, so maybe this is the inspiration he needed for the king's stage on Volta ao Algarve! Good Luck Agostinho!
Now he needs a good night of sleep...

Another good result!
Though in the future, it's better to convert your screenshots to .jpg, otherwise it takes ages to load this page |

Great story concept ever Too bad there isn't a classic BD that you can use, but oh well. Good luck, I hope we can finally win a Grand Tour or one of the 5 monuments! |

STAGE 3 VOLTA AO ALGARVE
So after we see what these 3rd category climbs can do to some top cyclist that don’t come to Algarve in decent shape, the 3rd Stage is the hardest on this 5 day race. Today we have 120km of a hilly stage, with three 3rd category climbs and the end on Alto de Malhão where we should have a hell of a rhythm on the final climb!

With a break of 17, Movistar and Omega Pharma are controlling things. The break has 2 groups, the most dangerous man is Van Avermaet who is more than 4 minutes behind on overall. Froome is also present.
At the start of the first 3rd category climb, while the group with Avermaet and Froome already caught, the peloton rested allowing the remaining 6 man to build a gap of 5’35: Demare, A. Cardoso, D. Muravyev, Bardet, Antomarchi and Edet.
With 20km to go and entering the thir 3th category climb, the break has 2’11 on the peloton and another group tries to go: Tiernan-Locke, Van Summeren, Bertolini, Le Mével and Garzelli. They’re all dangerous and they’re just 30 seconds from yellow.
With 10km to go everybody tries to attack as we start the last descent before Alto do Malhão. Boonen is still there as Omega Pharma and Movistar seem to be in trouble to control the race.

4kms to go, Movistar brings their man to the front but the tries to break don’t seem to stop!
In the last km Agostinho tries to bring Rui Costa but there’s lot of guys there, including Boonen…
Egoi Martinez wins the final sprint in front of Simon and Boonen. Again Movistar had trouble to launch Rui Costa and he was late into the sprint, he was 5th.
Agostinho lost too much energy trying to place Costa and finished behind Plaza. He was 29th with the same time of the winner.
It was an opportunity lost to make same diferences and after tomorrow's flat stage, it should be the final time trial to decide the race. Tony Martin is well placed to repeat his win in Algarve.

STAGE 4 VOLTA AO ALGARVE
With a flat profile, and no sprinters on the team, Movistar’s manager decided that today was a day to protect the leaders and pay attention just to GC threats.
With 100km to go a 4 man break has 7 minutes of advance. Greg Van Avermaet is virtually the leader as was 4,32 from Boonen at the beginning of the stage. Vilela, Saramotins and Bosisio are the other three.
Omega Pharma, Sky and FDJ are now working hard for Boonen, Cavendish and Demare. Saxobank also collaborate thinking on Haedo. 50km to go and 3’19 diference.
With 13km to go, the main sprinters teams are trying to form their trains as the break is caught. Lots of speed!
7km to go and Costa is on Boonen’s wheel. For sure he can’t beat him on sprint, is he thinking about a surprise attack? Guess who’s on Costa’s whell? That’s right…Agostinho. Cavendish is also well placed, but he has no team mates. Maybe Haedo’s wheel can give him what he needs.
Surprisingly Manuel Cardoso sprints much stronger than the rest, with a perfect timing he sprinted before the last turn winning easily.
Haedo and Cavendish get the other top 3 places. Boonen got stucked and only finished 9th, wich was good for the GC guys.
So as expected the 4th stage brought no changes to the GC, and everything is going to be decided on the time trial!

Well, the Portuguese will be happy to have beaten Cavendish, I think even Agostinho will celebrate that win, even if it's from another team |

STAGE 5 VOLTA AO ALGARVE
The time for decisions has come. Volta ao Algarve is going to be decided today. Flat all along the 25.4 km, Tony Martin, Sylvain Chavanel and Marco Pinotti are the best time trialists amongst the riders that might win, and that have 40 seconds to Boonen. Rui Costa needs to beat Boonen by 24 seconds and Simon by 16 seconds. He also needs to defend the 16 seconds to three guys that are the biggest threats, specially the world champion, Tony Martin.
The time trial didn’t go so well for Movistar and Costa didn’t manage to make better than 16th, worse than Boonen, worse than the 3 favourites and even Roy and Vellits where better than him.
So a 7th place overall for Costa. Not the best of results in his home country. Omega Pharma has 4 on the top 5. Amazing!
Agostinho managed to beat his team mate Herrada and won the Youth Jersey. He also finished on the 13th place overall, and she showed than the can be someone to count on.
Movistar ended up being 4rd overall on the teams classification
Meanwhile the team has started it's presence on Vuelta a Andalucia where Valverde is starting his season, and after 3 stages very bad news: Andre Amador has broken his leg and will be out of his bike until March
