Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 2
As one of the two hilly stages, this day might already bring a preliminary decision for the overall. The fast puncheurs or the punchy sprinters are the favorites today.
This is most probably one of only two chances to achieve or goal of a stage win. We hope that our sprint train Vanmarcke - Pozzato - Freire will be able to perform. Therefore, Smukulis won't be allowed to go into a break today to defend his mountain jersey. He might get it back later in the race but for this stage, we have to make sure no break comes through.
5
It took a while, but now we have the first attacks by Friedman (BMC) and Muravyev (Astana). 140
. 13
The peloton seems to be happy with this duo. They have an advance of 1'30. 132
. 27
Lotto has picked up the pace towards the first intermediate sprint. Muravyev wins, Greipel takes the third spot from the pack, the advance shrunk to 30 seconds. 118
. 45
The high pace was just a fluke, though. The escapees are more than three minutes in front now. 100
. 50
Smukulis jumped from the pack to take 8 more mountain points. He has secured the polkadots jersey for one more day now.95
. 60
After the mountain sprint, Smukulis , Fédrigo and O'Grady got away from the pack. They're two minutes behind the original escapees and two minutes in front of the peloton. Matti Breschel is chasing them. 85
. 76
The trio made it to the front. Breschel is still two minutes behind. In the peloton, Lotto picked up the pace since this break could become dangerous with some strong riders in it. 68
. 99
Still 46 kms to go and Pierrick Fédrigo already attacks from the break. O'Grady tries to follow, the rest keeps quiet. 46
. 107
Several riders try to get away from the main pack, among them Vansummeren and Kroon . 38
. 113
Numerous riders have to pay tribute for the high pace. The peloton decreased to 50 riders. O'Grady and Fédrigo are only 1'30 in front. 32
. 125
Entering the last 20 kms, we see the first serious attacks from the peloton. Ballan and Visconti go! 20
. 128
They weren't successful but now Flecha and Cancellara attack! 17
. 136
Gilbert and Martin reel the escapees back in just under the 10 kms banner. It seems like Visconti is Omega Pharma's leader today.9
. 137
And there he goes already, following several other attackers. 8
. 138
But Sep Vanmarcke (T.CS Bank) took control and pulled them all back. 7
. 141
Vanmarcke gives everything but strong riders are on the attack. Visconti , Westra and Ballan try to follow Cancellara , who is a bit up the road.4
. 142
The T.CS Bank train is lining up but Cancellara has a nice advance. Did they miss the right move? 3
. 144
One kilometer to go! Pozzato leads out Freire and they're coming closer to the front. But they're not the only ones... 1
. 145
It's incredibly close! The first row from left to right: Gerdemann , Pozzato , Cancellara , Freire , Martin ! 0
. 145
Gerdemann had the top speed and eventually takes it with a nice margin. Cancellara holds everyone else off to make a RadioShack double. Oscar Freire finishes on a nice third spot, Pozzato comes in sixth!0

Well. I don't think we could have done much better. But then again, we didn't achieve our goal of a stage win.
I think we had the right tactics in the end. It was the right decision not to cover all those hasty attacks in the last kms, mainly because Sep was a total beast, basically going full gas for like 8 kms. He was really strong. In the sprint, Gerdemann was just too strong for us. Just look at his gap! If Oscar had launched the sprint a bit earlier, he might have taken the second spot from Cancellara, but third is fine as well.

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 3
Another flat stage that is likely to end in a bunch sprint. Not much more to say.
We'll try to get someone into the break to prevent us from having to do work in the peloton. In the final, Oscar Freire will again try to do his best.
1
First attack by Mauro Facci (Astana). Meleshin follows. 133
. 24
But the escapees struggle to get away. The pack keeps them under a minute. 110
. 32
After the original attackers have been caught, Mauro Da Dalto (Liquigas) gives it a try. With only 11 kms from the mountain sprint, Gatis Smukulis follows! 102
. 40
And they get away. Joined by Matthew Wilson (Orica) and again Mauro Facci , they are two minutes in front. 94
. 43
Smukulis takes the mountain points more or less uncontested.91
. 65
The advance is at five minutes now, but still no real danger for the peloton. The first intermediate sprint is uncontested in the break, Smukulis says thank you and takes the six points. 69
. 91
Wilson takes the second sprint, Smukulis is third and the provisional lead in the points ranking. The advance shrinks to three minutes.43
. 111
It's mostly Lotto and Saxo Bank doing the pace. It's due to them that the advance of the escapees is below two minutes now. 23
. 128
Everything is back together. The sprint preperations are in full play... 7
. 131
Several sprint trains are forming. Saxo Bank for Petacchi , Lotto for Greipel , T.CS Bank for Freire ! 3
. 132
Bouhanni on the right is the first to make his move with Tyler Farrar on his wheel. Freire tries to catch his wheel.2
. 133
Under the flamme rouge, Farrar is in the lead, Freire still looking good behind him. Greipel is coming closer but he had to leave his lead out very soon! 1
. 134
300 meters to go! Freire is in the lead, Allan Davis and Michael Matthews are coming closer! Can he hold it? 0
. 134
Yes! Amazing! The old Spaniard still has it in him to win a flat sprint! He also takes over the ochre jersey! 0

Wow! Everyone here is completely overwhelmed! We really didn't expect to fulfill our stage win goal on a flat stage, but today, everything just fell into place: We had a great train, Bouhanni and Farrar went too early, Freire was clever enough to leave Pozzato's wheel, Greipel had a bad timing, everyone else came from too far behind. But that shall not diminish what Oscar did today. It was another big win on his old days.
Now that our sponsor goal is accomplished, we have no pressure for the remaining three stages. Having the ochre jersey on Oscar's shoulders, we can just see what we can achieve in the overall classification.

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 4
Another flat stage. Four intermediate sprints attract breakaways but we can expect another mass sprint.
We have the "burden" of the leader's jersey, so probably no breakaway for us. We need to make sure no escapee can steel our leader's jersey, otherwise we're just looking for a decent sprint result with Freire.
10
10 kms into the race and still no breakaway. Very peculiar. 120
. 20
10 more kilometers and Gatis Smukulis says it's enough: the first intermediate sprints are closing in and the Latvian has a jersey to defend! 110
. 25
Lotto doesn't let him go, though, and here's why: André Greipel wins the intermediate sprint. Freire is only fourth here, which means that Greipel draws level in the GC. 105
. 28
Now, the next escapees try it and get away. 102
. 67
Halfway through the race, the advance of the break is already decreasing again. It's at about four minutes now. Most prominent riders present: Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) and Paolo Longo Borghini (Liquigas). 63
. 102
It's again mostly Saxo Bank and Lotto doing the pace, but T.CS Bank faces up to their responsibility as well. 28
. 106
Mauro Facci wins the mountain sprint and comes closer to Smukulis . Still, the Latvian is 12 points in front.24
. 115
Only Alexander Kristoff is left in front, but with almost two minutes! T.CS Bank pulls back from the front, since he's no threat to the GC. 15
. 119
Kristoff looks certain to win now. Three minutes in front.11
. 126
Or is he? Saxo Bank and now again T.CS Bank increased the pace towards the sprint finish. Only one minute to Kristoff . 4
. 128
Pozzato takes the front, but Dehaes leads out Greipel . The Lotto guys are faster, Kristoff is still in front...2
. 129
Bouhanni caught Greipel's wheel. The T.CS men are out of contention. Kristoff fights...1
. 130 But he loses it! Oh, that's bitter! Bouhanni wins it in front of Petacchi . Freire finishes only 17th today, the French takes over the overall. 0

Admittedly, not the best day for us. We lost the overall and the points jersey, but both are still within reach. Tomorrow is the bigger day for us. We'll see what we can do then.

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 5
The decisive stage. The finish up to Old Willunga Hill allows strong puncheurs to create time gaps and steel the overall from the sprinters.
Our goal is to keep everything together until the finish and then strike with Vanmarcke, Pozzato and Freire. Since we already have our stage win, we just hope for an improvement in the overall.
5
Longo Borghini sets the first attack of the day.144
. 17
FDJ paces intensly over the first kilometers, so no break could make it so far. 132
. 24
Five riders broke free now, among them Longo Borghini and Marcel Sieberg . In the GC, the best of them is two minutes behind. 125
. 69
Five minutes is the advance for the escapees at the first intermediate sprint. T.CS Bank already took the front in the peloton. 80
. 113
10 kilometers before the first ascent to Willunga Hill, the advance is down to three minutes. Stuart O'Grady decides that this is a good time for an attack. Flecha , Breschel and Kroon follow. 36
. 122
FDJ joins T.CS Bank in the lead. The four riders don't get away. Two minutes left for the original break. 27
. 126
Paolo Longo Borghini wins the mountain sprint and comes closer to Gatis Smukulis . Only 8 points seperate them. Behind, RadioShack sets the pace. Cancellara and Gerdemann already excelled on the first uphill finish so we can expect a good result from them today.23
. 130
Bakelandts and Cancellara are in front as Vansummeren , Wiggins and Kroon attack.19
. 133
Now that is peculiar: Probably knowing he has no chance in the final, overall leader Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) attacks. 16
. 139
Cancellara works his ass off and pulls everyone back. Gerdemann seems to be RadioShack's leader today.10
. 144
Luke Roberts and Sergio Martinez used a small phase of low speed in the pack to attack and fastly gained a minute of advance. Could this suprise move succeed?5
. 145
No. Vanmarcke quickly pulls them back. Starting the final ascent, Giovanni Visconti (Omega) attacks. 4
. 146
T.CS Bank show themselves at the front. Pozzato leads out Freire , but Visconti still leads, and Lieuwe Westra attacks! 3
. 147
Now Gilbert attacks, his team mate is still up the road. Pozzato chases but he looks pretty empty already. 2
. 148
The sprint starts and the T.CS men lose ground quickly. It seems like it's between Visconti , Gilbert and Westra , but Cancellara leads the chase! 1
. 149
Visconti takes it! A fantastic win, improved only by the second place of his team mate Gilbert . Pozzato and Freire end up on the places 11 and 13. In the overall, they sit in 4th and 8th.0

Another ambivalent day. We didn't get the daily result we hoped for, but Filippo and Oscar still managed to stay close enough to the front to be in the overall Top 10. Oscar even has a small chance of advancing one place, if he wins the final stage, which to be honest is rather unlikely.
We also have two jerseys now since Sep is the best young rider at the moment. Here, we have the small chance of losing the jersey if Bouhanni wins the last stage.
Anyway, I think if we get to defend our two jerseys, maintain our overall positions and maybe get a nice result tomorrow, we shall be pleased with our season debut.

With it being the Tour Down Under Freire won't regain those 37s on the GC, but another stage win is not out of the question

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 6
The final stage looks unspectacular but it contains still a lot of suspense. Both the mountain and the sprint jersey aren't decided yet and the short length guarantees intense riding, not to mention the expected bunch sprint.
We will try to get Gatis Smukulis into the break of the day once again to defend his mountain jersey and maybe even give it a shot at the points jersey. Otherwise, we want to keep our trio Vanmarcke, Pozzato and Freire out of eventual trouble and see what Oscar can do in the final sprint.
2
In the first corner of the circuit, Smukulis attacks! 88
. 10
And they made it: Four riders are two minutes in front now. 80
. 34
Smukulis passes the intermediate sprint in second place behind Muravyev . Both have 16 points now and draw levels with Andre Greipel .56
. 39
The advance was at a maximum of 4'30, but that was enough for the teams in the peloton. They increased the speed. 51
. 44
Again, Muravyev and Smukulis are the first ones over the sprint, this time for mountain points. The Latvian has secured his jersey now! 46
. 59
Despite all efforts, Smukulis only reaches a third place at the second intermediate sprint. The points jersey provisionally goes to Dimitri Muravyev 31 . 69
Muravyev takes the second mountain sprint as well, Smukulis couldn't care less.21 . 76
The break splits and only Egoi Martinez is left in front. He has only 50 seconds of advance though. 14
. 79
Everything is back together. Nothing seems to get in the way of the expected mass sprint. 11
. 86
The sprint is about to start. We have Garmin on the left for Farrar and Lotto on the right for Greipel , on whose wheel is Oscar Freire . Pozzato is a bit behind, following Bouhanni . 4
. 87
But just as on stage one, Freire has bad luck and gets boxed in. Greipel has a perfect lead out, Dehaes is going fast. 3
. 88
But Lotto messes it up! Dehaes goes too early, realizes that and stops! Greipel loses a lot of speed, suddenly Garmin is back in front. On the other side of the road, Alexander Kristoff is coming fast. 2
. 89
Farrar took the lead, Bouhanni is in the perfect position behind him. Greipel tries to correct his mistake with a good pace, on the other side it's Robbie McEwen who goes fast.1
. 90
But Bouhanni takes it. No problems for him there. With this win, he takes both the points and the young riders jersey. For T.CS Bank, Pozzato achieves a decent seventh spot. 0

What a messed-up sprint. Oscar again with terrible luck, but he said he had a very bad daily form either way, so what the heck … In return, Filippo in the sprint and Gatis in the break did very well. We end this first race of the season with an achieved sponsor goal (the stage win), another podium place and a Top 10, plus two riders in the Top 10 overall and the mountain jersey. Pretty decent start, I'd say.
It was a pleasure to accompany this squad here in Australia and I hope you enjoyed my reports. For our next race, the Tour de San Luis, I pass on to JuanMotr .
