Stage 1: Prospect - Clare, 149 km
img844.imageshack.us/img844/1734/australia12profile1.jpgSome small slopes, nothing serious, we can get excited for a first bunch sprint!

Today's goals:
- Top 5 (Bozic, Ponzi)

Favourites: Marc Cavendish, André Greipel, Tom Boonen, Matthew Goss, Oscar Freire

Depart in Prospect.

img339.imageshack.us/img339/331/kpcm0003.jpg
90km to go, we have a group of thirteen rider in front, Grégory Rast, Manuel Quinziato and José Ivan Gutierrez among others.

With 74km to the finish, the escapees hit the first intermediate sprint in Kaparda.
Spoiler
Rollin (Garmin) 6
Bueckmans (Vacansoleil) 4
Quinziato (BMC) 2

65km to go, the first and only KoM "sprint" in this stage. Nobody seemed espescially interested in that one, so randomly Sepp Vanmarcke takes it and get the honor to wear the mountain jersey tomorrow!
Spoiler
Vanmarcke (Garmin) 16
Guardini (Farnese) 12
Roberts (Saxo) 8
Gutierrez (Movistar) 6
Buffaz (Cofidis) 4

The second intermediate sprint in Riverton with 44km to the line was won by Guardini. Meanwhile in the peloton, Rabobank, Sky, Orica-GreenEdge and Lotto are working hard to close the gap between the escapees and the pack.
Spoiler

14km remaining. Rast, Quinziato and Rollin are the only one remaining from the breakaway, the rest already got snaped by the pack. They also did not success and finished within the pack.

img685.imageshack.us/img685/6813/kpcm0008.jpg
Well, I failed quite hard. I did not get Ponzi, who acts as leadout for Bozic today, into a good position for the bunch sprint. Sky's train for Cavendish is in front, with Goss and Greipel at his wheel.

img849.imageshack.us/img849/1000/kpcm0009.jpg
We opened the sprint, and Ponzi did well in getting Bozic into a better position. But this already costed quite a bit from the red bar.. In front, Sutton is leading Cavendish into the sprint, followed by Goss and Greipel.

img268.imageshack.us/img268/6497/kpcm0010.jpg
While Bozic is giving his best to gain some places, Cav accelerates with 700m to go! It seems that Goss can overcome him..

img545.imageshack.us/img545/4137/kpcm0011.jpg
But in the end, it was enough for Marc Cavendish to stay in front and get a deserved victory! Good job from his team, chasing the breakaway and building a train for him, and he reward their effort with the first victory 2012! Goss and Greipel finished close behind him.
Losing speed in the final meters, Bozic came in 8th. With such a bad position with 3km to go, we can be pleased with that. Borut has to thanks Ponzi, who did a great effort between the 3000 and 2000m mark to get him into a better position.

Good result for Bozic after a leadout like that one.

Great attempt by Bozic Wink

But he wasn't really going to beat Cavendish in a sprint though Frown

Stage 2: Lobethal - Stirling, 150 km
img405.imageshack.us/img405/9092/australia12profile2.png
Quite a hilly one, but the real interesting part is the hilly circuit around Stirling, which coveres the last half of the race. Espescially on the last climb, we can expect some action!

Today's goals
- As sutty68 said, we are not able to compete in bunch sprints, we have to get more active to achieve the stage win. So we want to have one rider in the breakaway.
- Top 10
- We rely on Gasparotto and Kiserlovski for the hilly stages, so we are expecting some action from them at the last climb

Vasili Kiryienka (Movistar)
Enrico Gasparotto (Astana)

A group of nine riders, including Astana's Muravyev, Castroviejo and Ginanni, attacked early in the race and took the first intermediate sprint. Surprisingly, Muravyvev was able to outsprint Henderson for the six points at Mount Torrens.

Surprisingly, Sky did almost all the work to get that breakaway down. Without any puncheur in their squad, and the finish being to hard for Cav, it seems kinda unreasonable.
37km to go, E1 <-2'37"-> P

img829.imageshack.us/img829/4895/kpcm0016.jpg
With eight kilometers to the line and the start of the last lap, Alfredo Balloni and Juan José Oroz attacked out of the breakaway.

img88.imageshack.us/img88/9961/kpcm0017.jpg
4000m to the finish, Balloni and Oroz still had a lead of 20 seconds. As soon as the pack hit the gradient, Kiserlovski and Gasparotto, protected from their teammates, set the pace up to thin out the group. As we will see later, it worked out.

img6.imageshack.us/img6/383/kpcm0018.jpg
Oroz and Balloni got gulped by our pace, and Kiserlovski accelerates! He leads the bunch into the last 1000m, followed by Goss (the only real sprinter who made it through in a solid condition), Gasparotto, Duque and Monfort.

img194.imageshack.us/img194/6470/kpcm0019.jpg
I feared that Goss would destroy the group in the final sprint, however, he did not. Tired from the high pace at the last climb, he managed to stay in a good position, but slowed down early and had to give up the hopes for the stage win. Profitating from the hilly finish, Kiserlovski still leads and seems to be the sure winner, but Gasparotto accelerates at high pace from behind!

Gasparotto overtakes Goss, but it was not enough to steal Kiserlovski the victory on the line. A 1-2 for Astana! Dominating at the final climb, we managed to exhaust the sprinters and play out our advantage at the gradient.
Managing to open a gap of thirty seconds, the first seven riders finishing are gaining important time for the overall!

Team: Astana Pro Team

As much as I like to achieve a double win, and though we had the strongest puncheurs in the field, I might be on hard soon if we continue to make results like that.
Next update might be tomorrow!

Stage 3: Lobethal - Stirling, 150 km

Despite some little slopes, it won't be a really hard one and probably another stage for the sprinters.

Today's goals
- With our stage win achieved, we don't have half as much pressure to try something. However, we will try to get into the breakaway with Muravyev or Ponzi to gain some seconds in the intermediate sprints.

Though there were several attackers (including Ponzi) which tried desperately to form a breakaway, the peloton never let go of them and hit the KoM sprint at Sellicks Hill first. Without anybody interested in the points, we let Kashechkin make sure to get 16 points for the climbers jersey.

Still no escapees in sight at Mount Comprass, so the intermediate sprint here went to the peloton as well. With a good position and an early acceleration, Simone Ponzi managed to surprise the bad placed top sprinters and grabbed the time bonification, which might make him lead the youth overall ranking.

With 54km to the line, we finally saw another attack! AG2R's Jimmy Casper, who doesn't seem to be strong enough anymore to win at a mass sprint, decided to go on the attack this time! The peloton let him go, as he is no threat for the overall anymore.

img171.imageshack.us/img171/2088/kpcm0005.jpg
Casper won the intermediate sprint in Goolwa, but the peloton fought for the points left! Ponzi tried the same tactic as at the earlier one, but this time, Cavendish&Co did pay attention and started soon enough to overtake Simone.

31km to go, and Casper enjoyed a good lead of 3'07". What a ride by Casper! There's still work to do, tho, as the pack is setting up some steady pace now. And he's alone against the powerful wind at the coast..

img443.imageshack.us/img443/362/kpcm0007.jpg
The pack stretched a lot in chase of Casper and the sturdy wind. It definetely was not enjoyed by many riders, and some weaker ones even lost contact for some moments.
21km, Casper <-1'48"-> P

img155.imageshack.us/img155/6813/kpcm0008.jpg
A steady lead of fourty seconds for Casper with only 4500m to the line, but the pack is coming closer!

img99.imageshack.us/img99/1000/kpcm0009.jpg
The inital situation for the final sprint. O'Grady act as leadout for Goss, while Ponzi and Bozic are sharing the wheal of the overall leader. We also have Kreder, Boonen, Cavendish, Rojas, Viviani and Greipel around, except Freire, every top shot is going to participate in this one!

img40.imageshack.us/img40/6497/kpcm0010.jpg
A tired Casper was caught below the red flag. Goss, Boonen and Cavendish are accelerating, the other sprinters just at their wheels..

img687.imageshack.us/img687/4137/kpcm0011.jpg
But after that good leadout from his team, nobody was able to steal Matthew Goss that well deserved victory! Cavendish and Boonen complete the podium. Greipel, who had to came quite a lot from behind, managed to get fourth, while Bozic profitated from Goss's slipstream and achieved a great fifth place! Ponzi barely missed the Top 10 as eleventh.

U25: Simone Ponzi (Astana)
Team: RadioShack - Nissan

Goss is dominating right now, with his third Top3 placing in three stages! And the odds are well that he will continue his domination streak, as the next stage is another one for the sprinter.

Excellent 1-2 for the team! BananaBanana

Now we have to give it all at Old Willunga!

Good luck!

The team on stage 2 were just simply brilliant, well done

And the GC is looking great as well Wink

Stage 2 was awesome. Great work. I'm starting to really like this story!

Stage 4: Paradise - Tanunda, 130 km
img27.imageshack.us/img27/9403/australia12profile4.jpg
As the previous stage, a short one. The small slopes probably won't stop the sprinters to use the last chance to show what they are made off before the deciding hilly stage tomorrow up to Old Willunga Hill.

Today's Goals
- With Ponzi and Muravyev placed barely outside the Top10 overall, we want one of them in the breakaway to gain some time through the bonus sprints.
- Top 10

Depart

img155.imageshack.us/img155/9242/kpcm0002t.jpg
A small group of six riders, including Muravyev, managed to get away - for now. Dimitriy gave his best to place first in Kersbrook, but he was not able to outsprint Bennati and Bonnet, which were easily counted as top sprinters at their peak.
Spoiler
Bennati (RadioShack) 6
Bonnet (FDJ-BigMat) 4
Muravyev (Astana) 2

img215.imageshack.us/img215/331/kpcm0003.jpg
Some riders joined the front group. Still tired from the intermediate sprint, Muravyev decided not to join the sprint for the KoM points, as there are no seconds to gain for the GC. Only a few kilometres after Smith Hill, the front group were caught by the pack.
Spoiler
Pérez (Euskaltel) 16
Bennati (RadioShack) 12
Andriato (Farnese Vini) 8
De Backer (Argo) 6
Bonnet (FDJ-BigMat) 4

img266.imageshack.us/img266/4198/kpcm0004.jpg
Ponzi seems to feel good in his well-earned youth jersey!
With the same tactic as yesterday (to the front and opening the sprint, surprising the top sprinters at their bad positions), Ponzi hoped to grab another time bonification today. And yes, he won the intermediate sprint at Mount Pleasan in front of Van Hummel and Rollin!
Spoiler
Ponzi (Astana) 6
Van Hummel (Vacansoleil) 4
Rollin (FDJ-BigMat) 2

img821.imageshack.us/img821/3747/kpcm0006.jpg
Similar to yesterday, one rider accelerated with ca. 60km to go, in hope for the spectular solo victory! Luke Roberts did not show anything so far in this stage race, so we was not exactly sure how far he could make it.

img856.imageshack.us/img856/362/kpcm0007.jpg
Chasing Luke Roberts (who, thanks to his victory at the mountain sprint, will wear the polka-dot tomorrow), the peloton was not interested in the KoM points. Kashechkin tried desperately to get to the front, however, he never was able to make it through the bulk.
Roberts <-1'06"->Peloton
Spoiler
Luke Roberts (SaxoBank) 16

Many rider have to pay the price for the selective pace by Orica-GreenEdge, Óscar Freire, José Joaquin Rojas, Jurgen Van Den Broeck and John Degenkolb among them.
19km to the finish; Roberts <-55"-> Peloton <-1'30"-> Group Freire

img853.imageshack.us/img853/1000/kpcm0009.jpg
With some crashes and an even higher pace, the peloton shrinked to a group of 57 riders! We managed to stay with all our riders in this front group.

img221.imageshack.us/img221/6497/kpcm0010.jpg
Luke Roberts did not succeed with his breakaway. With 2500m to the line, we have Sky's train at the left, with Ponzi and Feillu at their wheel, and Orica-GreenEdge's at the right, followed by Greipel and Bozic. Chris Sutton from Sky opened the sprint..

img191.imageshack.us/img191/4137/kpcm0011.jpg
.. and below the flame rouge, Cavendish is in the lead, with Ponzi right behind him! Feillu and Bole, both following Cavendish as well, try to accelerate out of the slipstream! It seems that GreenEdge missed today, with Goss, Greipel and Bozic positioned quite bad now...

img593.imageshack.us/img593/3458/kpcm0012.jpg
.. but with an incredible acceleration, Goss still is in the fight for today's stage! Bozic, right at Goss's wheel, accelerates out of Matthew's slipstream, going even faster than Goss... Greipel somehow lost contact to Borut. At the left, Cavendish just got slower and slower. He had to start his sprint way to early, and now he has to pay the price for being that early in the wind. Bole seems to be strong today, going out of the slipstream, outsprinting Cavendish!

img707.imageshack.us/img707/8196/kpcm0014v.jpg
Goss also takes this one, what a sprint! He appeared to be beaten at the flame rouge, but his incredible fast acceleration did make him gaining ground in no time! And we can be happy as well. Borut, choosing the right wheel and an amazing sprint at the last meters, he almost even overtook Goss! A great second place for us. Bole completes the podium after a surprising strong performance today, making this a great day for slovenia. Cavendish comes in 4th, Ponzi barely outsprints Feillu for the 5th, making this a great day for him as well!

U25: Simone Ponzi (Astana)
Team: RadioShack - Nissan

Though we are kinda successfull (just look at the overall), we does not have the strongest man present. Matthew Goss, with his second stage win and fourth Top3 placing, is dominating right now, he shows what he is capable to do, now where he does not have to help Cavendish anymore. And as we saw at the second stage, he seems to be the best of the sprinters on hilly terrain.
We have to go onto the attack tomorrow. Kiserlovski and Gasparotto were waiting for this stage, and already a little gap to Goss will be enough to take the leaders jersey from him!

I guess this will be last report until Sunday, as I won't have time over the weekend. Stay tensed for the decisive episode of this year's Tour Down Under.

Mr_Monk
Nice 2nd with Bozic, good luck for Old Willunga. Kiserlovski and Gasparotto could go 1-2 again Wink

Today's Goals
- Kinda obvious, Kiserlovski and Gasparotto will go for the stage win and the overall.

Race Report

Maybe the last time we see him in the ocker jersey. Every eye is on Matthew Goss today, will he be able to defend the lead in the GC?

Though we were trying to get one of our rider in the escape group, they always got hunted down as our rider are all kinda dangerous for the overall. So a breakaway including Òscar Freire, Thomas Dekker and Michael Matthews, but without our involvement got away and was hitting the intermediate sprint first.

It was a busy day for the peloton. After many attacks in the morning until an escape group formed, we saw quite a lot of attacks during the half of the race. This one, including Kiryienka, one of the favorites for todays stage, was able to get away and to join the front group.

However, some teams, even if they do not have any rider for a uphill finish, did excellent work chasing the breakaway. With almost 50km to go, the gap was reduced to 1'49"

Matthews won the second intermediate sprint in a close call ahead of Fenn and Balloni.

With 27,7 km to the line, just before the first ascent of the Willunga climb, the breakaway was finished. However, Kiryienka, Terpstra, Dumoulin, Freire, Balloni and Schär were giving it another attack!

img822.imageshack.us/img822/362/kpcm0007.jpg
Like at the climb up to Stirling, we set up a high pace and even got a little gap, and only Monfort was able to respond to, joining our little group.

But as the helicoptor camera shows, the riders are still close together and the gaps are decreasing again.

With ten kilometer to the finish, the peloton is back together. However, our high pace definately did the job, reducing the amount of riders to 54. And the final climb is still ahead!
Casar with an attack on the downhill section.

Breschel and Kiserlovski accelerates with 1600m to the line! Casar slowed down, paying the price for his attack before.

img208.imageshack.us/img208/3458/kpcm0012.jpg
The uphill sprint begun soon, Kiserlovski following Breschel. However, Monfort and Bakelants from RadioShack did amazing here, both with an incredible acceleration and though they started from the second group, they closed the gap soon and Maxime overtook the front group! Only Gasparotto and Bole seems to be able to stay with them.

img225.imageshack.us/img225/575/kpcm0013.jpg
Though Maxime Monfort slowed down soon, it was enough to stay in front and even opening a gap of 12" to Kiserlovski and Gasparotto, which came in 2nd and 3rd. Breschel, who followed Roberts attack, finished 4th with our guys. Bakelandts, who first looked strong at the uphill sprint, lost ground at the final part and completed the Top5 with a gap of 35" to his team mate.

U25: Simone Ponzi (Astana)
Team: Astana Pro Team

That did not go so well. We tried an attack which was not really successfull, and underestimated Monfort in the last kilometre, where he is opening a gap which might not exist if we would look out (I did not let Gasparotto sprint as it was possible, but Monfort got away in these moments, I should had let Gasparotto follow him).
Well, still three in the Top10, the youth and the team classification! The final stage won't change much, but we will try to achieve another fantastic sprint result with Bozic and Ponzi.
Last stage might be up tonight.

sutty68
Kiserlovski now only six seconds down on GC Wink

You must try and put distance between him and Monfort Wink

You should try to get bonus seconds, you can do it Wink

Stage 6: Adelaide City Council Street Circuit, 93km
img94.imageshack.us/img94/3249/australia12profile6.jpg
A flat circuit without any difficulties. The Montafiora "Hill", however, will give some riders the opportunity to go for the KoM jerse one last time. As the circuit is flat as a pancake, it will be hard to get the six seconds together to take the overall.

Today's Goals
- Try to get into the break or set up a high pace and let Kiserlovski get that bonus seconds.
- Top 10

Depart

No, we did not get into the breakaway. As soon as Kiserlovski made an apperance, RadioShack and Orica-GreenEdge made sure that the escape group got eliminated. Frustrated, we gave up on that, as we just found no way to save the intermediate sprints for Robert.

8000m to the line. As we see the pack preparing for the sprint..

img42.imageshack.us/img42/362/kpcm0007.jpg
.. Casper and Izagirre are giving another shot at the victory today, they still have a lead of 45" with 8km to go!

img855.imageshack.us/img855/6813/kpcm0008.jpg
They were not successfull and were chased down. However, it was a chaotic sprint today, most of the top shots placed badly, and with a slow pace, we can saw Sepp Vanmarcke with a desperate attack with only 2000m to go!

img861.imageshack.us/img861/1000/kpcm0009.jpg
And he makes a great winner! Deserved, as he was the only one who punished the pack for their sloppy pace with a great attack on the final meters.

img51.imageshack.us/img51/6497/kpcm0010.jpg
Frustrated faces here. As it was a crazy sprint today, it does not surprise to much that Luca Paolini won the bunch sprint ahead of Goss and Boonen. Borut and Simone placed 7th and 9th.

Well, that was it! We possibly could have won the overall, but at least we achieved the stage win for the sponsor and a fantastic 2-3-10 in the overall! The victory from Simone Ponzi in the youth overall and the win in the team ranking make us shine as well!

Next race on the schedule is the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise in the end of January!
