What a great win for Banesto.
Thanks! Yes it was a great victory indeed. But also an unexpected victory and I did not really bring a squad that can defend the jersey very well. For the ones that are born after the eighties, the four Spanish riders that I brought are not exactly talented. In the difficult terrain they were having difficulties just clinging on. Bernard and also De las Cuevas (74 and 73 HILL) I want to keep short in the GC as they can do well in the final ITT. Arnould (70 HILL, 59 ITT) for obvious reasons should not drop back from the pack early, which only leaves Philipot (74 HILL but aweful ITT) as a descent helper in the first part of the stage and Bernard, Arnould himself and De las Cuevas for the last 40 miles or so. Hopefully the Buckler guys will help out a bit... |

So far he is doing well, but this 3rd stage is going to be very important. The terrain seems to be much more difficult and has an uphill finish. For Arnauld it will be very difficult not to loose time here. And to win the Volta ao Algarve he needs a bigger gap with the ITT specialists Hodge, Nijdam, Maassen and Mauri, as Arnauld has aweful ITT skills. Since also Bernard and De las Cuevas have good ITT skills, I'd rather attempt to keep these riders close to secure top 10 (or higher) positions in the end. Anyway Arnaud has done very well indeed and deserves to start in a couple of nice races shortly. Paris - Nice will be the first... |

Not too bad. Finished 8th with Bernard, who is now 6th in the GC and probably will stay there unless something crazy happens in the flat stage tomorrow.

Bernard lost two places, but will hopefully take them back in the ITT.

When I play this stage 7 out of 8 riders got in the top 10 and several of them beat Zülle with more than 20 seconds in this ultrashort ITT. Therefore I simulated this stage. Hence there are no pictures of the stage. The results are somewhat dissapointing, but nothing that Indurain can't fix in the difficult mountain stage tomorrow...

With 20 bonus seconds at the finish and with difficult hilly stages to come, it was important to create a sufficiently large gap with the others. Indurains hill stats are not too good (76). The plan was to break the pack into many pieces on the second mountain, as the finish of the terrain was too easy to create big gaps. It didn't happen. Indurain simple rode away from the others and instead of everybody for himself it was indurain versus the pack in the last 60 kilometers or so. Not the ideal situation as the pack could have come back. Fortunately they didn't. Indurain holds a 2 minute gap on his competitors but with hilly stages to come the victory in the Vuelta a Andalusia it is not a walk in the park just yet.
