Equipment is not working as it says, so never buy it.
Pre-season camps are not that important. The AI teams don't use it so you have a advantage in the first races but also your riders are getting tired more. It is a trade off because your riders might lose fitness in the end of the season because of it.
And about trainers:
The first point of Smoku is about useful development, this does not cost any money just some time.
The other two points are about development speed, so obviously you have to adopt it to your budget |

Yep, for pt 2 of my post you may go for less skilled trainer if you do not have budget, still 5 or 6 points should be achievable for any team and they are the least you should aim for.
As for the pt 1 and 8 riders per trainer rule - they are pretty much a must for the development to be effective. |

Again thanks for all the answers this has really improved my understanding of career mode, now I just need to get better at actually playing the game... definitely enjoying myself though and the help here has been invaluable. |

@Original post:
All the points in the other replies are usefull. Training categories and trainers are very important for young riders growth but there is another variabel that is hugely important; that's race experience and results. Similar to FM your young riders have to get experience and challenges but they can also get challenged too much. They will grow really fast if they achieve good results - even in very insignificant races.

If I recall correctly, noone ever proved that. Correct me if I'm wrong, though

You're right, that hasn't been proved (yet).
As far as we know results don't have an impact on their training. |

In PCM 2008 or earlier, the young riders evolved based on race experience, but since then, it is training only.

Wasn't that only in the 2006 version? Maybe the 2007 too, can't quite remember. You could fill up his XP bar by riding races that matched his current XP level.
It was incredibly unrealistic though, as you could give any rider +12 in his main stats in just a season. I got Tony Martin (68 mo and 67 tt or something) to win Tour de France in just my 2 season. |

I have no proof of it but i have no doubt it's true. I think they might use a tweeked version of the exp bars from pcm 2008 (not 100% sure about the year). I haven't done any tests in pcm 2012 but in 2011 I played a lot of careers and the development of young riders really accelerated when they got their first top 5 results or victories. In particular I had one rider who grew 2 points ovr over 1,5 year then he won an unlikely victory in a 2.1 race and grew 4 points in half a year. I think good personal results for a rider adds another accelerator in their progress.
Although this was in pcm 2011 i doubt they changed the mechanics that much. I wont be playing career mode in pcm for at least a few months so i won't be testing it for now. |

I'd definately have a look at gene_i_year_progression (and gene_i_day_progression as well) before making such statements, differences in evolution could always be coincidentally caused by that.

i dont think exp had any effect in 11
is it affected by your training peaks?

There's nothing in the database that suggests that racing has any influence on rider progression. |

Incidentally how do gene_i_year_progression and gene_i_day_progression work?
Obviously the affect the pace of progression but is it clearly understood how? |
