Saur - Sojasun 2012 - February
Teddy The Creator
Nice preview. Wink

My guess is Tankink in a break, or Riblon in a sprint. Wink

cio93
Nice team choice, good luck for the early french races!

Oh, and I would suggest raising Julien Simon's stats quite a bit. Come on, 68/60 in Hill/Sprint is ridiculous.

@ Alakagom - You clearly haven't seen me play this before. I'm not brilliant.

@ Teddy The Creator - I guess we will find out soon Wink

@ cio 93 - I agree he is hugely underrated and I hope he will get a big update in the next release. I will make him 70 HIL/72 SP/73 ACC with a max of 75 in both sprint and acceleration. He is probably a better sprinter than that already but I don't like making too many adjustments once the seaosn is underway.

Sorry, I must have just scrolled past your comment, I was also in the middle of watching TV. Thank you for the good luck and I'm sorry I missed it.

Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/MarsIntro-1.jpg

The 29th January is a chilly 6 degree Celsius and overcast, though rain is not expected. Despite the cold conditions there is an air of excitement in the professional peleton: the European season is finally underway!

As is to be expected in any classic, a lot of riders are keen to show themselves already and justify their contract for the season. Because of this a group of 14 riders goes away early including Anthony Delaplace. The group manages to pull out about 1 minute and 30 seconds before they are joined by still more riders, who form a group of 20.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-1.jpg

AG2R and Saxobank work together to shut this down with 100km remaining. The two world tour teams are working for Roche and Sorenson respectively. The pace stays high for quite some time before finally a break manages to prise out a gap. The riders are:
i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.pngVachonBretagne
i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/BEL.pngHosteAccent
i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.pngDelarozierePomme Marseille

i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/BEL.pngNeirynckTopsport

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-2.jpg

The riders are joined by i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/RUS.png Klimov (RusVelo) on the climb up the Col de l’Espigoulier, the largest climb of the day in the middle of the stage. Over the top the gap stands at 4’10” over the rather lax peleton, which is being lead mostly by Saxobank and Landbouwkrediet.

On the descent Lemoine leads the break, who are now also joined by i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Matheou (Rideau – U), making it a group of 9 up front.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-3.jpg

With 16.5km remaining, the break hits the final climb. The lead is at 2’04” and coming down, so it is going to be touch-and-go.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-4.jpg

And then the peleton bursts into life as several big attacks come. Some of the big favourites launch themselves off the front, with Sorenson getting a gap over De Waele, Roche and Schumacher. The peleton starts to split up under the pressure.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-5.jpg

The peleton manages to bring them all back except for Sorenson, who powers on ahead, catching Matheou, who had been dropped from the break. Realising that the gap is coming down we scream at Lemoine to get on the front and lead on the descent. This stabilises the gap and with 5km to go the gap is at 1 minute to the two chasers, who are struggling to hold off the charging peleton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-6.jpg

Lemoine tries to get other riders to work but everyone is just looking at each other. Lemoine just decides to deal with it and gets back on the front to push the pace, ultimately meaning that he leads out the break’s sprint.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-7.jpg

There aren’t many other good sprinters here, but Lemoine has done a lot of work in the final 10km and the effort is starting to show. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.pngVachon comes up the inside and takes a huge win for Bretagne – Schuller.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Mars-8.jpg

Lemoine comes in last in his group for 8th place. Hivert manages 18th after the bunch sprint, which is not a bad result at all. All up a top 10 result is what we were hoping for, but to come last in the break is somewhat disappointing.

Nice start with Lemoine in the break of the day Wink

Pity he couldn't get the win for the team Frown

Great to see you doing a story, as i love your man-game reports. Of course these cant be so detailed, but i will follow certainly, Saur is very cool team. Smile

Nice top 10 for a start and good luck throughout a season.

Too bad no one wanted to work in the end. But it's a good result to start the season and you brought the sponsors in the picture, good job!

I really hate when that happens...Angry ... but is a nice start of the season..

@ sutty68 - Ah well, I didn't come here expecting a victory. Usually it seems to go to a Duque style racer who can climb and sprint.

@Avin Wargunnson - Thanks for following, and I'm glad you like the team.

@ BrokenShards - They are so much fun to play as because you can be as aggressive as you like and just cross your fingers and hope that an attack sticks!

@ Ian Butler - Exactly, I figure that the sponsors won't be too disapppointed with a top 10 and a full day in the break.

@ baia - Yeah I swear the AI was just tempting fate and seeing what I would do. Thankfully for them a top 10 was good enough for me.

Australian National Championships

Simon Gerrans won the national championships with a 1-2 finish for GreenEdge against his teammate Matthew Goss. In the time trial Cadel Evans comfortably won ahead of Richie Porte and so he will be wearing the national championship jersey in the time trials this July as he pursues a second Tour de France victory.

Tour Down Under

In this race traditionally dominated by sprinters, i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/GBR.png Mark Cavendish reigned supreme, winning all 4 flat stages. On the hilly stages, however, the focus was instead on the battle for GC. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/POR.png Rui Costa struck the first blow when he won the hilly stage into Stirling, just outkicking i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/ITA.png Alessandro Ballan. Though i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/BLR.png Aleksandr Kuschynski won the hilltop finish at Old Willunga Hill from a break, it was Ballan who performer better of the top 2 men in GC and as such he took the overall victory thanks to his consistent riding. This is a great start to his big goals of Flanders and Roubaix.

Tour de San Luis

This mountainous stage race turned into a ding-dong battle between i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/IRL.png Daniel Martin and i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/SPA.png Angel Vicioso for the overall victory. Though Vicioso managed to win the time trial, Martin managed to win solo atop La Carolina on the sixth stage by enough to win the overall with a single second in hand. Martin is clearly looking like he is ready for some of the big climbs this year and will hope to take on the world’s best later in the season.

Rankings – WorldTour

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-2.jpg

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-3.jpg

Given his overall victory at the Tour Down Under it is no surprise to see i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/ITA.png Alessandro Ballan at the top of the rankings. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/SWI.png Martin Elmiger gave AG2R some valuable points with his second place overall. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/AUS.png Ben Day was second on the stage up Willunga Hill and so he is the best placed Continental-level rider.

Rankings – Continental

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-4.jpg

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-5.jpg

Our own Cyril Lemoine is placed 16th here after his showing at Marseillaise. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Florian Vachon unsurprisingly leads this ranking, ahead of i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/RUS.png Sergei Klimov, who had a good showing at the Tour de San Luis. As a team we sit in 15th place, but hope to improve that next month.

Rankings – CQ

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-6.jpg

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/JanWrap-7.jpg

Cyril Lemoine is 58th in the CQ rankings and our team is 27th. Ballan’s overall win at Tour Down Under once again guarantee him top spot here and Cavendish’s 4 World Tour stage wins put him a close second.

February Calendar

And here are the races we will be racing throughout February. It is mostly French domestic races but we think that we stand a particularly good chance in Portgual, where Coppel will be attempting to win the overall title.

Etoile de Besseges and Mediterrainen Tour are amongst my favorite rides in France, good luck there!
Coppel could do very well in Portugal, though I'd rather see him winning in France Wink

Hi Ian, I really like these early season French races too. I prefer Mediterranean personally because of the Mt. Faron stage, but both are fun. And I'm sure our sponsors agree with you - the more victories in France the better!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Besseges1.jpg

The Etoile de Besseges is one of the two key early-season French stage races that help to give an indication of who is set to have a good year and who needs to work harder to build their form. Though it is only ranked 1.1 it still attracts a fairly strong line-up as it is an important time to start racing for those riders looking to shine in Paris-Nice or the cobbled classics.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/BessegesIntro-1.jpg

The race is mostly flat and lacks a single truly decisive stage. Stages 2 and 3 are the most selective, with 3 being able to particularly punish those sprinters who can’t quite climb well enough. The remaining stages are perfect for bunch sprints or breakaways, however and so expect to see some big bunch finishes.

Looking at last year’s results, i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Anthony Ravard won the race largely thanks to picking the right break and then cleverly stole some time in an intermediate sprint to take the overall victory. Jerome Coppel finished 5th last year and we are hoping that a repeat performance is possible. Not only that but Stephan Poulhies won the fourth stage and once again he will be contesting the sprints.

Our Team

Our team for the race is as follows:

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/BessegesIntro-2.jpg

Coppel and Le Lay come here as our dual leaders, though Coppel is our major hope. Poulhies will have Simon to help him in the sprints, where we hope for at least a podium place or two. Everyone else is here to set the pace.

Etoile de Besseges – Stage 1

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Besseges-1-1.jpg

The first stage is a fairly simple course that is mostly flat with only a few bumps along the way that shouldn’t test the sprinters too much. At 172km in length it is fairly long, but without challenges it should still be a fairly easy day for everyone.

The first break goes without any problems and contains only five riders. We decide not to attempt to get in the break, instead preferring to control the race for Poulhies. The riders are:

Plenty of teams are willing to help to chase the break, including all of the ProTour and Pro Continental French teams. We send Talabardon up to help. The break gets a maximum gap of 8’03”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Besseges-1-3.jpg

With 20km to go Europcar have the gap well and truly under control and the gap is down to 1’30” and dropping rapidly. Finally, with 5km remaining Pliuschin, the last man in the break, is caught.

Europcar set up their sprint train, leading out i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Turgot. Poulhies tacks onto their train in sixth wheel, on the back of i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/GER.png Kluge (ARG). A second haphazard line on the left starts to form behind i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Mondory (AG2R)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Besseges-1-4.jpg

Kluge comes around the right hand side of the road and blazes past the Europcar line. Poulhies tries to come around him but can’t quite manage it. But no one can deal with the turn of speed of i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/FRA.png Lloyd Mondory, who takes the victory by almost a bike length. Poulhies will have to settle for sixth place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Saur%20-%20Sojasun/Besseges-1-5.jpg

Mondory gives his team a good first victory of the season, as well as teh leader’s jersey and the points jersey. i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/BEL.png Barbe took enough points in the break to earn himself the mountain jersey and i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/MOL.png Pliuschin will wear the young rider’s jersey thanks to taking some bonus seconds out on course.
