Stage 1 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil11.gif[/IMG-r]
London - Canterbury
203 km
Sunday 8 July
The first road stage of the 2007 Tour de France began where yesterday's spectacular bike tour of central London ended, on the Mall. It made its way through Kent for a flat finish in Canterbury, with the World Heritage site Cathedral as a backdrop.
It was touted as a day for the sprinters, and for once[IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/cav.jpg[/IMG-r] the British home crowd had a real sprinter to cheer for. Twenty-two-year-old Mark Cavendish makes his debut in the Tour de France this year. The sprinter himself was cautious about his chances before the start.
"Everybody expect me to do well in the final bit, but it's about getting there. It's 200 kilometers with the best bike riders in the world" he said.
Before the peloton left the Mall, CSC's Jens Voigt talked about today's stage and announced the team's intentions of defending the yellow jersey of yesterday's hero Fabian Cancellara.
"I think we will see some real British countryside, you know. I mean, we can stop for a cup of tea in the middle. No, I think we will be very busy controlling the race and trying to keep the yellow jersey in our team" the German said.
It would take a strong breakaway group to deprive the sprinters of the first bunch gallop of this year's race. Nevertheless, a lot of riders were eager to show themselves on the opening road stage. A break of nine riders eventually got away. They weren't given much leeway by the peloton, as CSC formed an alliance with the teams of sprinters Tom Boonen (Quickstep - Innergetic) and Robbie McEwen (Predictor - Lotto).
The breakaway took out all of the climbs along the route, with Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel) collecting the most points. He will therefore wear the first polkadot jersey of the 2007 Tour de France tomorrow.
The Basque climber Pérez secures the mountain points ahead of Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom).
After Pérez and the others had gotten their alotted television time, the peloton reeled them in on the run-in towards Canterbury. The last kilometer was dominated by Tom Boonen's Quickstep team, and his teammate Gert Steegmans put Tornado Tom in a perfect position in the last two hundred meters. The Belgian sprinter was challenged by Robbie McEwen (Predictor - Lotto) and Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole), but he held them off to win the stage!
Boonen prevails in a tightly contested sprint.
Britain's young Mark Cavendish gave a decent showing with his 10th place, but he obviously lacks the experience on this level as he was boxed in a bit.
Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) finished in the pack and kept his yellow jersey. Tom Boonen takes over Cancellara's green jersey, which was on loan to Andreas Klöden (Astana) during the stage. A great start for Boonen's assault on the points classification!
It wasn't just the sprinter's accounts that were opened in Canterbury today, the climbers have also begun the battle for the King of the Mountains title. For once, a decent climber got the jersey in the early stages of the Tour.
That's it from Canterbury and Britain. The rest of the day will be used to ferry the teams and riders across the channel to Belgium, where the Tour continues tomorrow.

Spoiler
The peloton getting ready to leave London.
Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) successfully defended his yellow jersey throughout the day. His teammate Jens Voigt is alongside him for company.
The breakaway, led by Gregory Rast (Astana). In it was also Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel), Nick Nuyens (Cofidis), Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Télécom), Brett Lancaster (Milram), Paolo Bossoni (Lampre), Michael Albasini (Liquigas), Paolo Longo Borghini (Barloworld) and Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC).
Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC) was policing things in the breakaway for his leader Cancellara.
Quickstep did most of the job on the front of the peloton. Which, as it turned out, they had good reasons for.
The blue train had Boonen at the end of it.
Geert Steegmans placed Boonen at the front with a clear view of the finishing line. Great job by the lead-out man today.
A lot of sprinters fancied their chances today, but Boonen was the fastest.
Fabian Cancellara finished safely in the pack, and keeps his hard-earned yellow jersey for at least another day.

Consider me interested. I've been watching the 2007 tour on DVD as it happens. The route is really nice. Your reporting style is magnificent.

Don't forget, he was just 22 in 2007, and by far not the sprinter he is now! Compare him with Guardinin nowadays...

I just noticed that Landaluze has already lost 5 minutes. Ouch, that's a tough beat.

Wow, thanks all
I thought I had gone a bit over the top with the amount of text in the last update, but it seems all right judging by the reactions. I promise more pictures in the main reports though!
Now I have some technical problems that must be overcome before I can continue, but I hope to have it fixed soon.

Stage 2 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil2.gif[/IMG-r]
Dunkirk - Ghent
168.5 km
Monday 9 July
Today saw the second stage of Le Tour return to Europe and it passed into Belgium across the mythical roads of Belgian classics like the Tour of Flanders, Het Volk and Gent-Wevelgem. 'Tommeke' Boonen was looking for a big win in front of the home crowd in Ghent. Ghent is also the birthplace of Bradley Wiggins, so he's been through his birthplace and his hometown in the first three days.
The flat stage added two more countries on the Tour list so far, as it started in the French port of Dunkirk before entering Belgium. There were no climbs, so the polkadot jersey was safe on Rubén Pérez' shoulders for at least one more day.
However, that didn't stop the Basque rider from going in the breakaway for the second day running. Today he even had a teammate with him, Iñaki Isasi. The orange climbers are being very active in the Tour's first flat days.
The Euskaltel boys bossed the breakaway.
Pérez was the best placed rider in the seven-man breakaway, sitting 35 seconds down on Cancellara in 22th. To help his overall standing, he collected a few time bonuses out on the course.
There were no hills to disrupt the locomotives at the front of the peloton, so the breakaway was once again doomed. They were swept up, and the sprinters' teams tried to position their fast men on the run-in towards Ghent.
One team who tried and failed, was Tom Boonen's Quickstep - Innergetic. Yesterday's winner found himself too far behind at the crucial stages.
Tom Boonen had too much ground to make up.
The scene was then set for others teams to show their strength. Crédit Agricole did a perfect lead-out for their man Thor Hushovd, but Erik Zabel (Milram) and Robbie Hunter (Barloworld) tried to come round the Norwegian from behind!
Zabel (Milram), Hunter (Barloworld) and Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) at the front, with Mark Cavendish (T-Mobile) just behind.
For a few seconds, it looked like Erik Zabel had it, but at the last moment, Robbie Hunter managed to get his front wheel slightly ahead! The Barloworld rider is the first South African to win a stage at the Tour de France!
Hunter lunges past Zabel!
"Honestly I have no words to describe it. It's been six years I've been hunting for a stage victory in the Tour de France. And you know, eventually it has happened. If the race would stop tomorrow, I would walk away very happy with what's happened at the Tour de France" the pleased South African said after the race.
Not only did Hunter win the stage, he also overtook the green jersey. Cancellara kept his yellow one, but look at Rubén Pérez! Up to 3rd after his time bonuses in the intermediate sprints.
