After the Giro
Ian Butler
I agree the last stages where the best, but come on, what about the stage with Rabotinni? Am I the only one who was extremely nervous when Rodriguez was nearing, and extremely happy when Rabotinni took the victory, which he deserved so much!

In all grand tours winner best time trialists unfortunately Sad

That's because all the climbing "specialists" attack only in the last 2 kilometers and they don't win enough time on guys that are clearly better in TT.

What TT specialists anyway?

Giro:

2009-> Menchov OK
2010-> Basso, not exactly a TTist, huh?
2011-> Scarponit, again, not the best against the clock
2012-> Hesjedal, bit better than Basso and Scarponi, but not a super TTist either

Tour:

2009-> Contador OK, but he's Contador, he dominated the mountains too
2010-> Schleck, super TTist, eh?
2011-> Evans, OK

Vuelta:

2009-> Valverde, a sprinter Pfft
2010-> Nibbles, not a super TTist either
2011-> Cobo, won it on the Angliru, beating the TTer Froome

So, out of the last 10 GTs, you have 2 of them (3 with AC 2009) won by the stronger TTists. Such a domination, eh?

Well I guess we both had in mind today's finish more than the other GTs. And also the fact that Schleck doesn't stand a chance at winning Le Tour because of his TT "skills". 2010 doesn't count.

I think this Giro was very fun to watch Smile

1. In the first 4 stages one tough mountain stage, but with the finish after a descend.
2. Strade Bianche
3. Two TT's, one short ITT after 5-7 stages, and one longer ITT (50km) after 1-17 stages.
4. Like the idea of a mountain TTT!
5. The queen's stage between stage 12-17.
6. A stage were echelons can be formed in the last 4 stages.
7. One dreadful mtf like Zoncolan, Mortorolo, Krohnplatz.
8. Tell the worlds best GT-riders (Evans, Schleck, Contador) that they have to race the Giro and fight for the GC, else they'll fins a horse head in their bed!

This Giro was quite boring to watch because all of the favorites waited till the last weekend. And when that weekend was there they couldn't realy get away from each other...

My moment of the Giro was clearly seeing Thomas De Gendt win on the Stelvio.

We must not forget it was his first ever Giro and his second GT! Grin

For me personally the 3rd week was by far the best of the whole race Smile

Strafe Bianchi every year, without a doubt. It forces gaps and encourages the GC riders who are good in the classics to make up more time. That and another ITT before the mountains, around 40km would be enough.

But yeah this was disappointing for what should be the best GT.

Evans an okay TTer, finishing 7secs behind Martin in the penultimate stage, while fighting for GC contention
if that doesn't constitute a good TTer, then what does?

for a GC rider, Evans has arguably the best TT (alongside Wiggins, but i'm still not convinced about him ,we'll see this TDF)

He said OK to mean that he agrees with the point that he is a good time trialist.

This would be a near perfect Giro. Maybe without 8, but I really like this.

I don't like 8, because then the Tour would be shit.

The-Pot
I think it would benefit the spectacle if they did two long TT, one in 2nd week and the other on the 3rd, both followed by 1 or 2 high mountain stages. This would mean people losing time on TT and trying to recover on the mountains. It would also mean nobody will be waiting for the last 3 stages to do something.

The Giro was crap. The worst I remember.

It needed a +50km ITT, either instead of the TTT or instead one of the flat stages in the first week.

The route, in general, was too backended, there should have been 1/2 high mountain stages before.

The final ITT should have been before the Dolomites (although I do understand why do they put it the last, even if a blind monkey can see it is detrimental for good racing) and longer.

I can second that, exactly what i think. The race concentrated to the third week and even there nothing happened apart from higlights from Kreuz and De Gendt. If the riders are not able/not want bigger margins between them, just force them to do it with ITT,mountains early are not helping either, everybody is waiting and 20-30 riders finishes together.

I am watching live cycling since 90's and this Giro was probably the worse and most boring GT i have ever seen, i was pissed more only with Pereiro year maybe. Frown
I'll be back
