Nice to see you doing a GT story from your SKY career. Smile
Your team is super-strong, but so is the startlist, especially many great climbers.
I am not the biggest fan of Froome to be honest, but i wish you best of luck with him anyway. Smile
I'll be back

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/stage1-1.jpg

Giro 2012 starts in Denamark, to be more precise Herning. It kicks off with an 8km prologue which will decide the first wearer of the Maglia Rosa. The prologue is varied, with few climbs, downhill’s and flats and will be definitely very exciting and close one at that.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0003.jpg

Let the Giro begin and it’s the Dutch men that opens the show. Westra is one of the earliest starters and sets impressive early time that will put him on the top spot for a long time.
11’50”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0007.jpg

Kanstantsin Siutsou is the first big GC riders out of the gates today, being a Belarusian TT champion marks him out and he doesn’t disappoint with just 1 second behind the leader so far.
11’49”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0018.jpg

Jos Van Emden is big Dutch hope for this prologue and he sets impressive time at the first checkpoint and continues to smash Westra’s time by 8 seconds!
11’42”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0017.jpg

Peter Sagan is probably the most talented kid on the block, and a great all-rounder at that. He proves his prologue skills are up to scratch with a blistering time, beating Jos by 3 seconds.
11’39”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0022-1.jpg

The Italian future champion, Adriano Malori already proved his Time Trialing skills winning the Italian Championships. He comes here as a pure domestique to Scarponi & Petacchi and doesn’t have any big goals. He disappoints a little, finishing 15 seconds low o Sagan’s time.
11’54”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0024.jpg

The other Italian veteran, Marco Pinotti doesn’t disappoint though and sets blistering time, beating Saga’s time by 4 seconds. This looks like a time that could win him the first stage. BMC have got themselves great domestique for Evans in Pinotti.
11’35”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0026.jpg

Tyler Farrar is the Garmin’s hope for success here and shows his form getting 4th provisional at the finish, just 6 seconds below the winnining time of Pinotti.
11’41”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0027-1.jpg

Janez Brajkovic proved he has great mountain talent, but never showed it in a GT race due to his below par consistency. He’ll try to disapproved that and produced a good ride throughout the Giro. He starts well producing same time as the early starter Westra, putting him onto 14th overall so far.
11’50”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0031.jpg

Chris Froome is our GC hope. He isn’t particularly good on short prologues, but still manages to produce a world-class result, just 15 seconds behind Pinotti and being the top GC contender so far.
11’49”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0032.jpg

Michele isn’t known for his time-trialing skills ans is expected to loose time in all 3 Time-Trials to other GC contenders. He doesn’t start badly, but looses 29 seconds to Pinotti. Froome gains healthy 14 seconds on him on the first stage.
12’04”

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0035.jpg

Cadel Evans proved to be consistent throughout the season and became Aussie Time-Trial Champion proving his time-trailing skills. He produces best time of all GC contenders, just 8 seconds behind Pinotti and 7 seconds ahead of Froome.
11’42”

Team's Reaction

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/BrailsfordCar_2421880.jpg

Prologues in PCM are quite a hard-nut to crack and we didn't expect a win here so we'll be pleased to have 3 riders in the Top 15. Froome gained a little bit of time already on other GC favourites, expect Evans. Basso on 17th is the surprise though hand highlights his great form. Richie and Mark both did good rides, especially Mark who will try to show himself tomorrow.

The plan for tomorrow is to be at the front, set some good pace and avoid any crashes or splits. We'll try to get Mark at the end and hope for a nice result, but without a train much will depend on luck.

@sutty68 - Thakns sutty, it is indeed nice start.

First proper stage of Giro begins and ends at Herning. Almost totally, with just single climb midway through the stage. Expect sprinters to go to the fore at the end. Farrar has the big chance of taking Maglia Rosa today with just 7 seconds behind Pinotti.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0002-1.jpg

First Giro’s propter stage is about to begin. Let the fun begin !

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0004.jpg

We have a break of 5 formed quite early on. Their chances are meek on the 2nd stage, but they will sure give it all. Nobody dangerous is present, but Lieuwe Westra could take Maglia Rosa if the break succeeded today.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0009.jpg

BMC is storming it at the front though, the break has never more than 4 minutes and the gap is gradually coming down rather than increasing. Good job BMC in keeping it together.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0010-1.jpg

With 14km to go we decide to gamble, it’s still early, but we decide to already and try position Mark at Farrar’s wheel. We are sure on one thing. It’s battle between Lampre v Garmin. We’ll see later on if we chose the right train.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0014-1.jpg

5km to go. Mark gets isolated from Farrar’s train. Will he get back or all it’s lost ? That’s the weakness of not having your own train.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0015-1.jpg

Somehow Mark avoids the mayhem behind him and finds the right gap to catch on Farrar’s wheel. He spent a lot of energy doing so, so a podium today will please us to be honest.

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/PCM0016.jpg

It’s Heinrich Haussler leading us out. 1.6km to go and Farrar is yet to sprint, Mark is waiting patiently. Trying to recover a bit from his earlier efforts. Sprint is about to begin !

*Cue Epic Music*

Team's Reaction

i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii520/Alakagom1/BrailsfordCar_2421880.jpg

Hell yeah, well that was really unexpected. We didn't know how Mark would cope with not the best form and without the lead-out. At one point we lost the wheel and all looked rather bad, but Mark saved it at the end, we are real pleased with that result and we'll hope we can do as well tomorrow defending the Maglia Rosa.

Luis León Sánchez is the first big casualty of the Giro, loosing today over 5 minutes. GC is over for him.

This stage possibly shows us things yet to come. One thing for sure, this will be one hell of Giro Wink Stage 3 could be up later tonight or early tomorrow.
