Volta ao Algarve

www.naszosie.pl/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Volta-ao-Algarve.jpg

The 5 day race in the Algarve region of Portgual has been picked by many tour favorites as their first race. Valverde, F.Schleck, Horner, Boasson-Hagen, Wigginsm Uran, Van de Broeck and Gerrans formed part of the strong line up, as did Goss, JJRojas and Cavendish.

Team; As a result we were targeting a top 10, and some breaks. Tony Martin would lead, backed up by Linus. Fuchs, Knees, Nieman and Schumacher would ride support. Majka and Aregger would gain experience.

Stage 1
Nierman opened the attacks, and quickly a large break formed around him.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/niermanattstg1.jpg
Le Mevel(Garmin) and Moreno(Katusha) were also there.
Nierman took the first KoM and Petrov(Caja Rural) took the second. Wynants(Rabobank) took the first IS and Sulzberger(GreenEdge) the second.
No-one was commited to a chase and the break would win the day with a large margin.
Sulzberger took the bunch sprint, with Nierman 12th.

1st Sulzberger (GreenEdge) 2nd Pinto (LA-Anarte) 3rd Moreno (Katusha) Peloton@3'46

Stage 2
The break formed on the days first major climb, and Knees managed to get into it, as did Flecha(Sky) and 5 others.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/kneesbreakstg2.jpg
Knees took the first and third KoM's, Oliviera(Onda) the second, with each being very closly fought. The sprints went to Oliviera as well.
Again no-one wanted to chase, and the day was to be the breaks as well.
With 10km to go Flecha attacked, and Knees countered.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/kneesattstg2.jpg
Flecha lead out but couldn't finish it off, as Knees stormed through to win.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/kneeswin.jpg

1st Knees 2nd Flecha (Sky) 3rd Blanco (PRT)@23" Peloton@5'16

Stage 3
The hardest day and the only uphill finish. Costa(Mov) was the heart of the break won all the KoM's and Points. T-Mobile took charge to keep the gap down.
With 10km to go Uran attacked. With 8km to go Valverde attacked countered by Martin. A few other dragged themselves across the gap.
Costa held out to win fromthe break, solo.
Behind it was a close fight for the minor placings.

1st Costa(Movistar) 2nd Vilela@1'03 3rd Uran@1'10 6th Martin@2'07

Stage 4
The only day for the sprinters meant only a small group was allowed clear, including Dekker(Garmin).
Sky and GreenEdge were keen to get it to a sprint.

1st Cavendish(Sky) 2nd Goss(GreenEdge) 3rd JJ Rojas(Movistar)

Stage 5
A 20km TT perfect for our team.
Millar was mid of the day, and was very fast, setting the best time, only Boasson-Hagen and Zabriskie got close to it.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/mattt.jpg
The first run of 2012 for WC Martin was very impressive. Heflew 2nd at the first check. Hewas the only man to break 26'30, with 26'19.
Knees did enough to defend his lead, and actually extend it over the nearest rivals.

1st Martin 2nd Millar(Garmin)@17" 3rd Boasson-Hagen(Sky)@24"

Comment
This was hardly a normal race. 3 breaks in 4 stages. Knees got the right one, then held on masterfully. Martin looks good this early in the year. Aregger and Majka were in trouble but with time they will improve.

Wildcards for Paris-Nice announced!
T-Mobile has been snubbed again by the UCI. After 2 GC wins and a number of stages people are starting to cry foul. Europcar, Cofidis, Suar-Sojasun and 1t4i take the 4 places. The UCI have declined comment on the matter.
T-Mobile have expressed there anger at the situation, but we will shift our focus on to our next goal of achieving a wildcard for the TDF in July.

Swiss Double

img706.imageshack.us/img706/281/gpi.png

The Swiss double weekend announces our first trip to Switzerland. These races are important to our Swiss backers and riders.
First up is the GP dell'Insurbia-Lugano. 163km with 5 climbs in the 2nd half of the race sure to keep things interesting.
Second is the GP di Lugano. 175km with 5 climbs, but is a much tougher route. Many more UWT teams turned up so just keeping in the front group will be a result.

Squad; Kloden gets his season under way, but his form is unknown. T.Martin will be leading on good form. Schumacher gets a free role, he's got good form. Frank and Aregger represent the Swiss, and will be allowed to attack whenever they want. Denifl, Frohlinger and Geschke are low on form so will just be working for the rest.

GP dell'Insurbia-Lugano
The weather was bitterly cold today, and it was gonna be tough. Nibali and Scarponi were both in attendance.

The attacks came early but were successful. Aregger got in the break along with Bosisio(Uten), Pavarin(VCD) and 11 others.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/dellbreakareg.jpg
The group got a maximum advantage of 4'10

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/dellschuatt.jpg
Lloyd Niemiec(Lam) and Lewis(Cham) formed a group behind.
The 4 rode away building a 3min gap with 20km to go.

With 6km to go the 4 were still clear, Schumacher still solo. Behind attacks were coming, Brutt Vorganov(Kat) Gatto(Far) Klimov(Rus) and Kloden trying to get clear.

Stefan Schumacher held on solo to take the win in Varese!!

Comment
Starting with Aregger, great ride from the youngster, holding on at the end. Kloden showed decent form, building nicely towards his goals. A bit disappointed in Martin. Schumacher was outstanding!! 53km solo to win is such an acheivment and he truly deserves the rewards.

Comment
Tony saved enough energy yesterday to power away in the end today, great win. The rest of the team paid for their efforts, and the stronger field. Encouraging results as some of these guys hadn't raced in a while.
