Nice results in France, good teamwork in the last stage
Yes, was really nice to see Pozzato so good already, but unlucky for Ascani. But Ascani will get another shot at a general classification on Sardegna.
Updated the results. Next Trofeo Laigueglia.

Time for our first hilly classic. Failli and Gatto have been working hard the past weeks to gain form and this will be a perfect opportunity for both of them, although the flat run in favors Gatto. Our two puncheurs will be helped by Giordani, de Patre, Benenati, Ascani, Favilli and Andriato.
Right from the start there are numerous attacks, but there is always someone missing out. This means the pack stays together up the first climb with quite a high pace. Here we get the first signals from Gatto who isn't feeling well.
As we near the summit Marzano from Lampre finally gets a gap. On the descent he's joined by several other riders, but he seems by far the strongest. Meanwhile in the pack we take our responsibility with 2 contenders for the victory and set 3 riders to do the pacing. Giordani, de Patre and Andriato do a fantastic job and keep the gap steady around 2 minutes until the second to last climb. Then Katusha moves to the front and starts destroying the peloton. 46 riders survive this climb, 3 riders from Farnese; Gatto, Failli and Ascani.
Up front Marzano is the last man standing being chased by Katusha who ride for Vicioso. On the last climb it's clear that Lampre is holding back their strong riders to beat everyone at the finish, so we decide to attack with Ascani. He quickly gets a minute and joins up with Marzano. Now the wheelsucking starts, both Failli and Ascani are waiting what happens. And that's an attack by Vicioso! Now Lampre is forced to react and they bring everything back together. Thanks to this only 19 people are left in the front group.
The descent and the final flat part are nervous, but there are no more attacks. In the sprint Ascani gets on Viciosos wheel with Failli behind him. This was a great move as Vicioso is the fastest sprinter. But both Ascani and Failli overtake him in the final k for a Farnese 1-2.
Final classifiaction

As it seems a bit too easy I'm switching to hard now. Giro di Sardegna on wednesday I think, a little busy right now.

Nice 1-2 in Laigueglia for your team
And i think that it is a wise decision to change to hard as the results will become more realistic for you |

This stage race with a tough hilly route and some uphill finishes will be the perfect preparation for the Strade Bianchi and other goals we have early on in March. Ascani will try to achieve a good GC placing, with Gatto, Failli and Benenati as his strong helpers. The others who can help out here are Giordani, Rabottini, Caccia and Balloni.
Stage 1
The island giro will start with a tough route but a flat run in. Freire and Gatto seem to be the biggest favorites for this stage. But over the first lumps Freire already gets dropped. Seeing this we decide to control the 13 man break that forms. At the top of the last categorized climb the peloton has split in 3 parts (with Freire and Oss gone) and the break only hold 2 minutes. Surprisingly Katusha takes over even though they lost their sprinter. But at the last climb when the break has been reeled in Rodriguez attacks and gets 46 seconds. Ascani leads a chasing group of 8 with Failli and Gatto present. But Rodriguez keeps an advantage of 22 seconds and takes the win. Gatto takes 2nd.
Stage 2
The first of 3 uphill finishes will show what the GC will be like. Caccia unfortunately is dropped by the high speed in the start and falls later on. He will give up later. A break of 12 forms, but only 9 keep a small advantage over a 32 strong peloton at the final climb. They are caught quickly though as the 9 strongest from the field seperate themselves from the rest. Amongst them are Rodriguez, Bertagnolli, Cappecchi, Rujano and Ascani. The first 4 attack and Ascani is barely able to follow. Rodriguez proves strongest once again getting the win and a gap. Ascani gets 5th.
Stage 3
A break of 6 aren't allowed more than 4 minutes. In the tough stretch leading up to the final climb the break is caught. Bertagbolli, Capecchi and Rujano try attacking early, but they get caught again. Then Rodriguez goes and no one is able to follow. The others stay close together with Ascani finishing 4th and a strong Failli in 5th.
Stage 4
The flat run in means this looks perfect for a break. Giordani reacts to 7 others forming a break. They get 9' at 85 km and then the pack really drops the tempo. As it gets clear the breakaway will take the victory Giordani tries to rest up a bit. But with over 12' advantage so do the others. Smolen is the strongest sprinter present, but Giordani can't keep the pace in the sprint. While Smolen wins Giordani only comes in 7th.
Stage 5
The final stage will decide the GC, although Rodriguez looks invincible. Katusha again keep tight control and the high pace means only 60 riders start the final climb as the break is caught. And the caught riders block Rodriguez, Capecchi and Bertagnolli, who have proven stronger climbers than Ascani so far. With 2 km to go Ascani leads Pietropolli and Florencio with a small advantage over the others. From way back Rodriguez starts his sprint and makes an incredible jump. The finish is very close between these 4.
But it's clear Ascani takes it! Some luck as Rodriguez still takes 2nd. The others are 10 seconds back.
This means Ascani gets onto the GC podium in the same time with Bertagnolli. Thanks to this win Ascani is third and Bertagnolli 4th. Failli and Gatto have never been seriously dropped and with Giordani in the break Farnese also takes the team classification. Everything else has been won by Rodriguez who was simply to strong for this field.
Final GC classification
1 | Joaquím Rodríguez | Katusha Team | 22h19'45” | 2 | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas – Cannondale | + 2'01" | 3 | Luca Ascani | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 2'35" | ----- | ----- | ----- | ----- | 6 | Francesco Failli | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 4'10" | 15 | Leonardo Giordani | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 9'22" | 19 | Oscar Gatto | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 10'49" | 36 | Cristiano Benenati | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 16'24" | 61 | Alfredo Balloni | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 24'25" | 116 | Matteo Rabottini | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 44'12" | DNF | Diego Caccia | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | |

Great result with Ascani against the stronger opponents (well stronger on paper).
Rodriguez was unbeatable, so the overall podium is still nice.

Thanks, this was on hard as well. But the form is great so the results are too. And after Mt Faron I deserved some luck with the blocking riders.

The Belgian opening weekend is upon us. The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad kicks off the cobbled season and represents our second season goal. We're expected to take a top 10, which should definitely be possible with Pozzato.
Helping Pozzato are Hulsmans as his strongest lieutenant, Favilli, de Patre, Ricci Bitti, Mazzanti, Bertolini and Andriato. Not a team to carry the race certainly, but there are others who will do that.
Among the favorits we have the usual suspects with Cancellara, Ballan, Hushovd, Leukemans, Devolder and Breschel. One big name missing is Boonen and indeed Omega Pharma Quickstep isn't competing here.
The course is tough, like every year, with several cobbled climbs and cobbled sections in the final third of the race. A solo rider will have to be strong though, as the last hill is about 35 km from the finish and after that it's flat with cobbles.
Things start off fast as everyone who isn't someone wants to be in the break. After 47 km the break has formed and consists of 9 riders.
Their names; Astarloza (EUS), N Sorensen (SAX), Degand (ACC), Kostyuk (LAM), van Hoecke (TOP), Labbe (COF), Favilli (FAR), Elissonde (FDJ) and Hermans (RNT).
We have managed to get Favilli up the road to keep the pressure from Pozzato. Likewise Cancellara has Hermans there, so it's up to Rabobank, BMC, GreenEdge and Vancansoleil to do the pacing.
And they do it well as the break is allowed about 4' advantage going into the final 70 km. Here things get interesting and the peloton starts to be decimated. With 54 to go the peloton has been reduced to 61 riders, with only Pozzato and Hulsmans there.
Especially Vacansoleil is looking very strong. The break have kept their advantage remarkably well up to that point though and still keep 3'19". But as the last cobbled climbs approaches this has gone down to 55" on a 39 strong peloton. Now the Danish champion Sorensen decides it's his time.
He is clearly the strongest and the others are quickly caught. Sorensen however extends his lead to over a minute again. And then the finale really starts at 25 to go. Cancellara decided it's his time and puts in an attack at a normal stretch of road. He quickly rides up to Sorensen.
The 20 riders behind this duo look at a 30" gap and leave the work to Vacansoleil. And they seem to manage as Sorensen is caught and Cancellara is within reach on the last big cobbled section.
But those cobbles have broken the last helpers and the 17 other favorites watch helplessly as Cancellara extends his lead to 51" over the next 10 km. Then the chasing breaks down completely as Hushovd, Nuyens and Leukemans attack.
Pozzato doesn't have the legs to follow and decides to sit in the group with Ballan, Breschel and the other minor favorites. While Cancellara safely celebrates his victory, Hushovd and his companions battle over the last podium places.
And it's Hushovd who takes 2nd in front of Leukemans. Nuyens is 4th.
In the background Pozzatos group approaches the final km as well. Hayman (SKY) leads Ballan (BMC), Scheirlinckx (ACC), Pozzato (FAR) and de Backer (P1T). Larsson (VCD) starts his sprint on the inside corner, Flecha (SKY) goes on the outside corner followed by Breschel (RAB) and Devolder (VCD).
And it;s indeed Larsson who launches this sprint. Pozzato is well placed though and jumps onto his wheel ready to counter anything that moves.
But de Backer proves too strong. Pozzato can hold off Breschel for 6th as the others fade badly.
Final results
1 | Fabian Cancellara | RadioShack – Nissan | 5h26'13” | 2 | Thor Hushovd | BMC Racing Team | + 1'27" | 3 | Björn Leukemans | Vacansoleil – DCM | s.t. | 4 | Nick Nuyens | Team Saxo Bank | s.t. | 5 | Bert de Backer | Project 1t4i | + 2'58" | 6 | Filippo Pozzato | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | s.t. | 7 | Matti Breschel | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | 8 | Staf Scheirlinckx | Accent Jobs – Willems Veranda's | s.t. | 9 | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Procycling | s.t. | 10 | Stijn Devoldor | Vacansoleil – DCM | s.t. | ----- | ----- | ----- | ----- | 28 | Kevin Hulsmans | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 7'04" | 73 | Elia Favilli | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 9'42" | 126 | Rafael Andriato | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 14'38" | 160 | Davide Ricci Bitti | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | + 20'39" | DNF | Luca Mazzanti | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | ----- | DNF | Thomas Bertolini | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | ----- | DNF | Roberto de Patre | Farnese Vini – Selle Italia | ----- |
Pozzato doesn't have his best form yet (80), so I'm quite happy with this result. Didn't take any risks in the final stretch as I just wanted the top 10 place. Might have squeezed out more, or might have lost it all by following Hushovd and co. Cancellara was in a league of his own, as usual.

@absintlover Thanks, was happy with the result as the form isn't great yet.
@jph Cheers, results on hard aren't as bad as I feared, really got the hang of it again. Will probably get harder as I go on as it;s only a small team.

I think hard is the "best" difficulty for smaller teams and extreme for the bigger teams .Your results are nice and realistic so far
