At "extreme" conservation of energy is key. Stage 5 finishes on top of Willunga Hill and it is important to be good there. Hermans will not do any necessary move untill the 2nd climb of Willunga Hill starts. And even than he will wait for the others to attack and simply counter. Bakelants, who is a couple of minutes behind in the general standings will support Hermans. Winning intermediate sprints means that you have to take part of a breakaway. Cavendish and Greipel are attacking every intermediate sprint if they can. They are going for the points jersey and have been fighting for intermediate sprints before. This does not mean that I do not have an offensive plan for stage 5. Bennati and Roulston are only 1'02" behind in the general standings. They willl try to get in the breakaway and force the others to react. I expect major resuffling of the general standings after this stage and therefore it is not very useful to discuss possible strategies for stage 6. If Hermans is close, intermediate sprints may be an option. But once again: conservation of energy is key and dropping back from the pack is a huge risk...

A lot of fireworks were expected at the top of the Old Willunga Hill resulting in a reshuffling of the standings. Yet most riders that were well classified all finished in one big group resulting in little changes in the general standings. Only Tankink managed to make a jump and he took over the first place in the general standings.

The first riders to attack were Docker, Ignatiev, Ferrari, Masciarelli, Brammeier and Roulston. The pack didn't let them go and only Ignatiev and Ferrari managed to stay in front of the pack for a while. Also they were caught after several attacks from riders that tried to escape from the pack. Once again Ferrari managed to stay in front of the pack alone, while also Brammeier wasn't caught at once.

img52.imageshack.us/img52/9141/pcm41.jpg

Roberts, Delage, Docker and Bennati carried out another attempt to breakaway and to join Ferrari and Brammeier. They succeeded but also were rapidly caught by the pack. Roberts tried again to break away. And Fedrigo, Krivtsov, Marzoli, Sergent, Sicard and Henderson also joined the leading group. Without riders that were close to the leaders in the general standings te pack allowed them to take some space. Consequently the riders didn't sprint for the first intermediate sprint at Snapper Point.

img269.imageshack.us/img269/4642/pcm42.jpg

Bole and Kroon tried to make the jump to the leading group. In the pack Roulston had fallen and dropped back. He managed to get back though. At the leading group in the meantime Fedrigo has placed an attack and is now riding alone a couple of hundred meters before the other attackers. It was a pointless excercise as the other attackers would catch him a little later. Once again Fedrigo tried to attack. This time Henderson followed.

img19.imageshack.us/img19/9579/pcm43.jpg

Henderson took the second intermediate sprint at Snapper point and was directly followed by Fedrigo at 12". Roberts and Krivtsov followed at 41", while Sicard, Sergent and Marzoli followed at 1'04". Kroon and Bole were at 1'49" from the leader and the pack followed at 7'22".

img826.imageshack.us/img826/4524/pcm44.jpg

Marzoli managed to jump to Fedrigo and Henderson and Bole and Kroon linked up with the others. The pack has decreased its gap with the leading group. Nevertheless Henderson is still virtually in the leaders jersey. He is ranked at 4'37" behind Haussler. Marzoli was clearly the best climber of the leading group and he passed the top of the Old Willunga Hill first before Fedrigo. Kroon, Bole and Henderson followed at 29", Sicard, Roberts and Krivtsov at 1'07", Sergent at 1'47" and the pack at 4'09".

img252.imageshack.us/img252/8519/pcm45.jpg

The pace in the pack is quite high and several riders are struggling to keep up.
In the downhill section of the Old Willunga Hill Kroon, Marzoli, Bole and Fedrigo leave the others behind, which are readily caught by the pack. It in turn has broken in several pieces . On the second passage of the Old Willunga Hill Marzoli attacked. Kroon countered and left the others behind.

img546.imageshack.us/img546/5759/pcm46.jpg

The others were unable to catch him. Kroon won. Bole finished second and Marzoli third. Behind them Tankink had left all others behind and he finished fourth and took over the leaders jersey from Haussler. Dumoulin, Tjallingii and Porte also jumped away from the pack.

Mondory attacked immediately from the start and set the tone for this stage early. Ermeti, Ignatiev, Perez, Vigano, Docker, Bouhanni and Ginanni followed. Together they took a 1 minute lead on the pack.

img688.imageshack.us/img688/8837/pcm50.jpg

King, Van Poppel, Forster, Wyss, Madrazo, Van Impe and Kriit tried to link up. When they arrived in the front of the race the pack had already increased its pace and the breakaway never really got any space. Within the leading group the organization failed and several attackes followed rapidly. Sijmens had sneaked into the leading group and with lack of interest from the others he took the first intermediate sprint fairly easy.

img651.imageshack.us/img651/4811/pcm51.jpg

Grivko fell. He is currently at 8th position in the general standings but may be dropping quite some places as the pace of the pack is high with only 57 kilometers to go.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/1928/pcm52.jpg

The attackers are caught and Perez placed another attack and thereby takes some mountain points on the way.

img826.imageshack.us/img826/6488/pcm53.jpg

Vaitkus would join him a little later. And also Napolitano joined the leading group, where Vaitkus easily won the second intermediate sprint.

img13.imageshack.us/img13/7987/pcm54.jpg

When besides the Rabobank also several other teams placed a couple of riders to make pace in the pack the chances for the leading group diminished. Napolitano nevertheless place another attack and took the last mountain points. Vaitkus passed as third but secured sufficient points to take over the climbers jersey. After that they were caught by the pack.

In the sprint it was very close between Cavendish, Greipel and Haussler. Once again it was the Australian who won his third stage victory in the Tour Down Under. Greipel finished second. Cavendish third.

The Schlecks will go for the Tour. I'm not sure yet whether to focus on one rider which than must win the Tour and sacrifice the other or trying to get a top 5 position for both Schleck borthers.
Besides the Giro also the Amgen Tour of California is an important target in may. Kloden, Fuglsang and Horner are prepping for may but I'm not sure yet who goes where...

Especially Euskaltel - Euskadi and Movistar have very strong squads at the start and it is expected that their riders Sanchez, Anton, Valverde and Cobo will dominate the various stages of the Vuelta a Mallorca. The Radioshack Nissan Trek team brought a squad with several riders that can go for individual stage wins. The first stage is very flat and typically would finish in a mass sprint. However, there are hardly any sprinters at the start. A breakaway therefor may just make it to the finish. Jimenez and Voigt were the first riders to attack. They did not get a lot of space from the pack and with the two of them did not get any support of other riders that joined the breakaway.

img215.imageshack.us/img215/5748/pcm59.jpg

Jimenez left all the work to Voigt and than quickly took the intermediate sprint before the German, who immediately stopped peddling. There was nothing to gain with the breakaway if Jimenez is only there to take advantage. Schadlich and Sabido were the next riders to give it a shot. Baggio, Casimiro and Biskarra followed. And later on also Clement, De la Cruz and Gerdemann. Clement, Gerdemann, De la Cruz and Casimiro were immediately caught by the pack. The others were joined by Belda, Anton, Rast, Alarcon and Goncalves. The second intermediate sprint at Palma was won by Baggio, before Anton, Rast, Bizkarra, Sabido, Belda and Gocalves. At 12" Schadlich adn Alarcon followed. Freitas, Mendes and Fernandez followed at 1'40" and the pack at 2'40".

img804.imageshack.us/img804/8695/pcm60.jpg

The pack takes back the lead of the attackers rapidly and with only a small gap Van Emden and Moyano tried to make the jump to the leading group. But also the pack approached fast and the riders in the leading group became nervous and attacked.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/8603/pcm61.jpg

Eventually all riders were caught with 10 kilometers to go. Movistar was setting the pace and with no competition the odds were looking good for Rojas. Moyana attacked with 5 kilometers to go and Gerdemann and Van Emden jumped along.

img214.imageshack.us/img214/6227/pcm62.jpg

The pace of the Movistar train was far too strong and Rojas easily finished it off. He won the first stage of the Vuelta a Mallorca.

Day, Dyachenko, Giordani, Hayman and Felline were the first riders to attack. Rasch, Kozontchuk and Forero quickly followed. Than several attacks continued to follow up upon each other. Felline, Day and Heado took a 18" lead on Hayman and Oliveira, 41" on Forero, Rasch, Kozontchuk, Dyachenko, Samoilau and Giordani, 1'16" on Perez, Bell, Wyss and De Patre and 1'37" on the pack. Felline took the intermediate sprint at Umm Suwaiya Farm before Hayman and Heado.

A leading group of 20 riders is formed after several riders successfully have made the jump to the leading group. With such a large group it is difficult to bring it back. However, there is no collaboration between the attackers and the organization fails. The pack returned a little later. Immediately Giordani, Rasch and Felline attacked again. They found themselves being followed by Garcia. They found themselves being chased by a group with Samoilau, Forero, Svitsky, Day and Fuglsang.

All nine attackers united and this time they were willing to work for each other. Quickly they took 5 minutes on the pack. The second intermediate sprint at Umm Thenaitain Farm was also won by Felline, followed by Savitsky, Garcia, Samoilau, Forero, Fuglsang, Day, Rasch and Giordani. The pack followed at 4'28".

The pack moves very fast in the last stage of the race and the lead of the breakaway vanished quickly. Rasch decided to try it alone.

It didn't matter. All attackers were caught readily and a mass sprint was unavoidable. Greipel proved to be the fastest rider of the day after many sprinters already had blown away from the lead of the pack due to the strong wind. Kittel finished second and Lacombe third.

Casimiro, Ryabkin and Rodriguez were the first riders to attack. They were quickly followed by Heinze, Monfort, Alarcon, Vanthourenhout and Bagues. But the attackers did not get a lot of space from the pack. Gerdemann, Bagues, Vanthourenhout, Rodriguez and Ryabkin were the next ones to attack. Rodriguez was the first rider to arrive on top of the Coll des Pinagar. He was followed by Bagues, Vanthourenhout and Gerdemann. Ryabkin followed at a couple of seconds and the pack was approaching fast at one minute.
