I don't personally rate Basso, plus Casagrande is in my opinion a better all rounder. |

There's a real lack of Arashiro and Blot around here, not forgetting the incredible Mads Kaggestad. |

Casagrande is one of the riders I considered as well, but decided to not to pick him mainly bacause a good chunk of his wins date back to the 90s. Definitely a better all-rounder than Birillo, though.

The OP actually mentioned results But Voigt is obviously one of your favourites.
How on earth can you rank Gilbert ahead of Bettini?

2000 and 2001 he didn't do too badly. Won Fleche Wallonne and King of the Mountains at the Giro in 2000, as well as being runner-up in the Giro, the Tour of Lombardy and Vattenfall. After that he had a few wins, but nothing major. |

I'm actually agreeing with most ppl here, but i do lack a rider like Van Petegem and Bartoli. Sure their best time might have been in the 90's, but they still got nice results in the early 2000's.

For me, it's hard to tell who are the best 20 of the past decade. I put Voigt there, but I could have easily done the same with Simoni/Heras/Sastre, etc. Just think Voigt's incredible work in the past decade made me chose him in that list. |

Guess what, for some random reason, rather than doing some stretching or watching movies, I've spent my afternoon sorting C.Q. ranking results from 2000 onwards (all riders who appeared at least once in C.Q.'s top 100 have been considered).
I thought that'd be rather objective, although one could argue the old UCI ranking that C.Q. base themselves on favoured sprinters too much, but that'll do it.
So, the best performers from January 2000 onwards are :
1. REBELLIN Davide 15 655 pts
2. ZABEL Erik 15 447 pts
3. VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro 14 497 pts
4. BETTINI Paolo 14 115 pts
5. EVANS Cadel 13 278 pts
6. FREIRE GOMEZ Oscar 12 692 pts
7. PETACCHI Alessandro 12 691 pts
8. BOONEN Tom 12 621 pts
9. CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto 12 512 pts
10. MCEWEN Robbie 11 662 pts
11. GILBERT Philippe 11 597 pts
12. CUNEGO Damiano 11 563 pts
13. ARMSTRONG Lance 11 393 pts
14. CANCELLARA Fabian 11 327 pts
15. SANCHEZ GONZALEZ Samuel 10 974 pts
16. DI LUCA Danilo 10 535 pts
17. HUSHOVD Thor 10 503 pts
18. VINOKOUROV Alexandre 10 365 pts
19. LEIPHEIMER Levi 9 820 pts
20. VOIGT Jens 9 772 pts
I included the last 2012 results available. As you can see that was a close one between Freire, Petacchi and Boonen. Freire was behind AleJet before TDU.
Now, if you'd rank them by the best season a rider has had, the top 20 would be :
1. Gilbert 2011 3168 pts
2. Valverde 2008 2 662 pts
3. Boonen 2006 2 559 pts
4. Contador 2008 2 520 pts
(Valverde 2009 2 494 pts)
(Valverde 2006 2 469 pts)
(Contador 2011 2 373 pts)
5. Zabel 2002 2 293 pts
6. Casagrande 2000 2292 pts
(Contador 2009 2 272 pts)
7. Cunego 2004 2 260 pts
8. Bettini 2004 2 239 pts
(Bettini 2003 2 231 pts)
9. Nibali 2010 2 204 pts
(Zabel 2001 2 177 pts)
10. Armstrong 2001 2 110 pts
(Contador 2010 2 092 pts)
(Zabel 2003 2 088 pts)
(Boonen 2005 2 073 pts)
11. Joaquin Rodriguez 2011 2 028 pts
(Bettini 2006 2 012 pts)
(Zabel 2004 2011 pts)
12. Freire 2004 1 993 pts
13. Petacchi 2003 1 989 pts
13. Vainstains 2000 1 989 pts
(Petacchi 2005 1 986 pts)
15. Evans 2007 1 979 pts
(Joaquin Rodriguez 2010 1 976 pts)
16. Di Luca 2007 1 959 pts
(Zabel 2000 1 951 pts)
17. McEwen 2002 1 947 pts
(Evans 2011 1 936 pts)
(Evans 2009 1 912 pts)
(Valverde 2007 1 897 pts)
(Armstrong 2000 1 894 pts)
(Valverde 2004 1 892 pts)
18. Rebellin 2004 1 883 pts
(Evans 2008 1 879 pts)
(Rebellin 2001 1 867 pts)
19. Cancellara 2008 1 860 pts
(Gilbert 2010 1 843 pts)
(Rebellin 2008 1 807 pts)
(Cunego 2008 1 800 pts)
(Di Luca 2005 1 795 pts)
20. Leipheimer 2008 1 787 pts
Hope this helps. |

My problem with this is that it favours those who have raced all 12 years over those who burned bright and fast.

With the first table, yes.
With the second one : no (although they might have had up to 12 shots to perform with for some of them). |
