It was a great stage and a few favourites losing lots of time. At the foot of the mountain MTN Loteria Tacchira took over. Youngster Quintero and the good old Arango made a pace that wasn't easy to follow. Larsson and quite a few Astana riders couldn't follow. But even Rubiano had great problems following his teammates. In the end Fuglsang proved strongest right ahead of Cioni. Everyone else lost more than 2 minutes.
We had a nice stage with 3 riders in the top 13. Quintero (10th), Arango (12th) and Rubiano (13th).

Final stage of the Vuelta al Tacchira ... Rodriguez will try to sprint, but we do not have much hope as there are lots of hills in this criterium.
But alas ... as so often my plans did not go as intended. Backup PLan was executed to perfection though.
Marlon Perez Arango, the hero, attacked a few kilometres after the start. He got away, though noone wanted to cooperate with him he soon found himself alone. The fighter he is he took his courage and tried to do it alone. His advantag to the peloton was max 7 minutes. He got to the finish line 4 minutes ahead of the rest. What a race of the hero again. This put him on 6th place in the GC even comfortably in front of Rubiano. Had he had better first stages even a top3 would have been possible.

King of the Mountains

So what to say about our home race? We missed the team goal points jersey quite clear. But 2 stage wins and a 2nd place of Arango and 2 riders in the top 10 is simply astonishing. Cafe de Colombia was nowhere where we expected this great team. Astana had lots of great riders but could not even get one on the podium. Cioni and Fuglsang were clearly the best and Cioni had an amazing tour.
Personally i am happy with the results i made. Usually my first plan didn't work, but Backup (Arango) plan was mostly glorious. |

Tomas Vaitkus won the Tour Down under due to a good attack on Willunga. We are now heading to Calabria. As this is no Sponsor goal and we meet a lot of top class riders we will not send our best riders.
the selected riders are:
Graciano Fonseca
Juan Alejandro Garcia Rivera
Jaime Suaza
Alejandro Borrajo
Jonathan Lopez
Johvanny Lopez Gama
Marcio Barbosa
Jaime Andres Vergara Caro
Rivera and Borrajo shall sprint. Fonseca and Suaza are our captains. Probably Suaza will go for the KOM jersey.
As you see we don't really have a chance to make anything with this team |

1st stage was won by Eros Capecchi in a sprint of a 26 people group. We had exactly one rider in there ... Sprinter Rivera who was in the breakaway of the day finished 15th. Due to time bonusses Rivera is even on 3rd place in General Classement. On the mountain Garzelli showed his strength.
2nd stage was as expected a mass sprint ... Cardoso Leal won the stage. Our sprinters did a good job finishing 7th and 8th. Rivera 3rd in GC and sprinter jersey is doing a good job so far
3rd stage we sent Fonseca in the breakaway. His goal was to take over the KOM jersey ... and he did it collecting 20 points. TIll 2 km from the finish he looked even like the stage winner, but Garzelli closed the gap. It has been 1:45 10 km from the finish. Lorenzo Bernucci won the stage in the sprint.
In the last stage we wanted to bring our main sprinter Rivera in the breakaway so he collects the intermediate sprint points and hoping no other one gets enough points in the finish and thus winning points jersey. The plan worked even better than expected. Rivera won both intermediate sprints ... but the peloton was not hunting them down so Rivera and 7 others sprinted it out in the finish. Rivera finished 3rd.
All in all the Giro Calabria was a big success. One podium finish, KOM jersey and sprinter jersey without a good team and against big competition. Benatti was here but never showed himself. Sam counts for Danilo Hondo and other sprinters of his calibre. Of course in the GC we had nothing to say ... Rivera being the best on 58th place.

Gran Premio Etruschi was a disaster for us ... we sent Fonseca and for the Sprint Vargas .... but he didn't have the power to sprint. Alessandro Petacchi won this race just ahead of Rossi and Chicchi. |

The next race is the Tour of Quatar. Ivan Dominguez shall win for us ... he is our best sprinter and after his disapointing appearance in Vuelta Tacchira he should burn to get some good results. Del Nero and Costa have the task to lead the team in the TTT.
In the Time trial we finish 8th - 37 seconds behind the winners Garmin. They came with Hunter and Farrar too. Other notable sprinters in the Tour include: Greipel, Renshaw, Vaitkus, Breschel, Cooke, O'Grady, Ballan, Freire, Hutarovich, Swift, Kirsipuu, van Hummel, Bazayev, O'Shea.
So that looks like a very competitive sprinting field. Maybe Dominguez has some fitness advantages after racing a 12-day Tour in January |

Tour of Quatar 2nd stage
As expected a mass sprint, Dominguez released himself a little too late, he was the fastest man down there, but 1 km from the finish he was aroudn 25th and the first 3 were 200 metres in front of him. He closed the gap fast but wasn't able to beat Koldo Fernandez of Euskatel.

Tour of Quatar 4th stage
This time in the mass sprint Dominguez had good position and timing, but was not strong enough to reach the podium. Tomas Vaitkus the winner of Tour Down Under was the strongest today.

Tour of Quatar 5th stage
Once again a mass sprint. It didn't look good as Dominguez was far behind and not able to come up. Suddenly Swift flew by Dominguez, Ivan recognized his chance and took Swifts wheel ... and that was enough to be in perfect position 500 metres from finish. There our sprinter put in everything and won the stage.

Tour of Quatar final stage
Just simply a desaster, Dominguez was in such bad shape he was nowhere seen. Ben Swift won the stage but at least Dominguez won the sprinter's jersey. That was close too. The Tour of Quatar was won by Tyler Farrar though he didn't sprint good.

Even though we missed the possible race win we are happy. Dominguez had several good sprints, 1 stage win and won the sprinter jersey. |

For the Tour of Oman we send Rivera as our main sprinter and Time trial specialist Mario Costa as captain. Jefferson Vargas is backup sprinter. We would hope for similar results like in Qatar, though Rivera is by far not as good as Ivan Dominguez.
Stage 1 Tour of Oman
As expected a mass sprint, and Juan Alejandro Garcia Rivero got the right wheel in Caethoven and surprisingly won the stage ahead of Kenny van Hummel.
Stage result
1 | Juan Alejandro GarcÃa Rivera | MTN Loteria del Tacchira | 2h38'49 | 2 | Kenny Robert Van Hummel | Skil - Shimano | s.t. | 3 | Bruno Lima | Orbea | s.t. | 4 | Steven Caethoven | Landbouwkrediet | s.t. | 5 | André Schulze | PSK Whirlpool - Author | s.t. | 6 | Steven Van Vooren | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 7 | Roberto Ferrari | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | s.t. | 8 | Claudio Corioni | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | s.t. | 9 | Bartłomiej Matysiak | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. | 10 | Kris Boeckmans | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. |
There are not many good sprinters in the Tour of Oman. AMong the best are van Hummel, Jezowski, Miyazawa, Visconti, Usov.
As you can see noone unbeatable for a Rivera in topform. This could be a great tour.

i start again, i used the oppurtunity and added a few riders from venezuela (there were only 3 in the original DB) and made the roster of MTN Loteria del Tacchira a bit more realistic. maybe a little more riders who are right now competitive - to some extent. But no more high potential guys. |
