Find one of the .dll files in the Avast folder. If you take it out of the folder, it will probably completely disable the program. Then you can open the game, and once open, you can move that file back, and everything should work fine.
This is what I do, and it works great. I cant seem to play online, but small price to pay.

Ok thanks a lot. I've had to unistall it so will probably go for Avira but if I don't get along with it it's nice to have a backup plan for getting Avast to run. Very strange problem in that Avast doesn't give you any warnings it just prevents PCM from opening but I guess that's PC's for you. Love-hate for 17years and counting!

So Avira didn't like Zone Alarm (which I love) and Avast wouldn't let me move any of the .dll files when I reinstalled it. My Kingdom for some universal compatability!
Anyway I'm running Ad-Aware Free now and PCM 11 runs happilly with all the shields up if anyone is looking for an Avast alternative. I really like Avast's features but the best bit about switching is Ad-Aware actually trusts me to shut it down when I want to to see if it might be causing me a problem.
Also having Malwarebytes in my back pocket has saved me again thanks to it eliminating all the problems caused during the window of opportunity with all this faffing around between antivirus programmes.
Thanks again to all for info and time.

What's up with all those weird antivirus programs? Uninstall them and use Microsoft Security Essentials along with the in-built Windows Firewall, and you're good to go.
