Really strong Hushovd so far.
Loads od time to make-up for Gesink before the mountains, but i believe he will go up the rankings everyday.
Kloden must be on somethingRolling Eyes
Good luck for the next stages Smile

I hope he will yes, should be a couple of guys who fall out of the top 20 anyway, but a really good position in the end might prove too much.

Will do stage 9 later this afternoon, first mountains Grin

Here we are. Stage 9 and finally Gesinks terrain starts. The alps start with a relatively easy ride to Switzerland. We will be looking to limit time losses and maybe exploit weaknesses by people who have a bad day. Also we will try for the break, because after the TT some of our riders are far enough back to be allowed some leeway.

img20.imageshack.us/img20/8669/stage9.jpg
Some big passes in the first half, the second half is easier.

Before the first ascent starts we try to organize a move. Garate is especially active, but the peloton won;t let up that easily today. But over the top it's finally an attack by Garate that gets a decisive gap.

img825.imageshack.us/img825/8749/garate.jpg
Garate will be first over the Col d'Evires.

In the descent Garate is then joined by 5 more, L Duque (COF), A Txurruka (EUS), Y Trofimov (KAT), D Loosli (LAM) and A Vanotti (LIQ).

img546.imageshack.us/img546/1833/break.jpg
The first 6 escapees.

But there's still some teams that are left out, so more moves follow once the peloton is in the valley. C Kern (EUC), S Gerrans (SBS), and F Jeandesboz (SAU) try to reach the break. Seeing this Barredo reacts to get a free ride to the front. Later they are joined by J Pineau (QST) and C Gautier (EUC).

img513.imageshack.us/img513/1376/chaseiw.jpg
Barredo pays attention.

Before the front group starts the Col de la Colombière the 6 chasers reach them. So now there's 12 men in the front group, with two Rabobank riders.

On the Col de la Colombière it's Garate doing most of the work, to ensure the mountain jersey for Barredo, as Barredo already has some points from the ride to Belfort.

img594.imageshack.us/img594/3006/pacing.jpg
That's teamwork in action.

The pace made by Garate is too high for some in the break, Loosli has to let go.

img832.imageshack.us/img832/5715/loosli.jpg
Paying the price for an active first week.

After 16 km @ 6,9% it's time to sprint for the mountain points. But there's more in the break that want that jersey, so Barredo has to fight for it. And he comes up short.

img412.imageshack.us/img412/9326/colombiere.jpg
Barredo 3rd behind Txurruka and Pineau. Trofimov is 4th.

The four who attacked over the top of the Colombière get a small gap to the rest of the group. This gap actually holds during the descent, so we have a split group at the start of the Col de l'Aravis.

img638.imageshack.us/img638/3944/breakingr.jpg
The lead group down to four riders.

On the Aravis the battle for points continues, with Barredo getting a 4th spot now, losing out to Trofimov (1), Pineau (2) and Txurruka (3).

img26.imageshack.us/img26/467/aravisn.jpg
Barredo losing the mountain jersey?

The peloton has been very quiet so far and at the top of the Col de l' Aravis they trail by 8'16". But during the descent and the following ascent to Chamonix they seriously ramp up the tempo. On that ascent Garate has been able to link up to the front 4 by himself, so now there's two Rabo riders again.

img265.imageshack.us/img265/1141/linkup.jpg
The lead group.

Garate takes up the front again, as the following groups now get dangerously close. In Chamonix the lead 5 have 1'59" on the 6 chasers who are left from the original break. That group is followed by the peloton 1'47" later. All seems in control for the peloton again, with 2 summits left.

img801.imageshack.us/img801/9949/garate2.jpg
Garate leading the break through Chamonix.

But Barredo still needs some points to get the mountain jersey. Up the Col des Montets Garate keeps pulling and this time Barredo finally finishes the job. And that's enough to get the jersey.

img836.imageshack.us/img836/420/montets.jpg
Finally Barredo wins a mountain sprint.

With the peloton crossing the summit just 1'12" later, the break are caught on the following Col de la Forclaz.

img249.imageshack.us/img249/6895/catchs.jpg
5 km left to climb this stage and the favorites are at the front.

And the attacks start immediately. Cunego really gives it a go and the front shatters.

img405.imageshack.us/img405/3180/cunego.jpg
Cunego takes matters into his own hands.

Cunego actually manages to cross the summit solo, with only A Schleck able to join him on the descent. Then it's a group of 8 favorites forming in the background.

img854.imageshack.us/img854/2347/andycunego.jpg
Andy looks back and sees 8 chasers.

But Gesink missed out. The first 8 chasers are; Wiggins, Contador, S Sanchez, Voeckler, Vinokourov, van den Broeck, Klöden and F Schleck. Gesink is in the second chase group with Martin, Horner, Leipheimer, Chavanel, Riblon, Evans and Hoogerland.

img508.imageshack.us/img508/2305/gesink.jpg
Gesink desperately chasing the other favorites.

The gaps are very small, but no groups are able to overtake the ones in front of them. In Martigny the front duo are caught, so 3 km from the finish it's 10vs8 and Gesink looks stuck in the background.

img511.imageshack.us/img511/6356/favorites.jpg
The 10 best riders today, without Gesink.

Vinokourov kicks off the sprint, but with 1 km to go it doesn't look good for him. He just lead out the others perfectly.

img706.imageshack.us/img706/7535/finalkm.jpg
Voeckler, Contador and Cunego looking to pounce.

Voeckler looks best with 150m left, but Cunego and Samu Sanchez are coming up fast.

img833.imageshack.us/img833/4052/almosth.jpg
Can Voeckler win this?

The answer is no, Cunego manages to finish off an impressive sprint and takes the victory in Martigny.

img27.imageshack.us/img27/633/cunegowins.jpg
Cunego insitgated this move and reaps the benefits.

Gesink has done all he can to limit the time loss, but he was unable to catch the others. He comes in 44" late.

img683.imageshack.us/img683/5793/droppedz.jpg
Gesink emptied himself so the others sprint for place 11-17.

Now that was unfortunate with Gesink, he wasn't paying attention probably? At least the white jersey and KOM are with Rabobank Smile

Nope, he was in a good position during the climb, but he had -3 daily form. Really bad luck, but he couldn't go faster.

Stage 10 awaits today, and it's a big mountain stage. 3 huge climbs for the GC men to battle each other. And the finish is on a mountain top, so difference are assured. Gesink will be looking to get time back today as this is his terrain.

img684.imageshack.us/img684/6262/stage10.jpg
3 big passes, leading the peloton from Switzerland, through Italy into France.

And todays climbs (All HC)
img35.imageshack.us/img35/4803/climbs.jpg

The attacks start early again, with 4 able to open up a gap. Their names are Hagen, Loosli, Bak and Verdugo.

img8.imageshack.us/img8/5809/break1c.jpg
Hagen struggling up to the three others.

Two more riders look to join the break. It's the names from yesterday again as Txurruka and Trofimov try to bridge the gap.

img805.imageshack.us/img805/9476/chase1.jpg
Trofimov and Txurruka looking for the mountain jersey.

This is of course dangerous for Barredo, but before we can react it's RadioShack who increase the pace. Clearly they don;t like this break either.

img64.imageshack.us/img64/6829/shackj.jpg
How did she get up here on those heels?

Because of this the break is soon caught. But Klödens teammates don't stop there and keep up a steady pace for the rest of the mountain. This means that a lot of guys start to feel their legs, as the climb up to the Grand-Saint-Bernard is almost 45 km long. Unfortunatley one of those is Barredo, who won't defend his jersey today.

img401.imageshack.us/img401/7512/barredo.jpg
Just one day in the jersey and then it's gone like that.

Seeing this we decide to send someone in the breakaway. Just as the road splits to the right to reach the high pass (instead of taking the tunnel) Mollema and Trofimov try again to get away from the peloton.

img403.imageshack.us/img403/8093/mollema.jpg
Will it work this time?

And they get away. As Trofimov has 19 points or so, Mollema decides to not even try to go for mountain points as it would be useless. So Trofimov takes the first prize on the Grand-Saint-Bernard.

img571.imageshack.us/img571/5610/gdbernard.jpg
The 2 escapees cross the pass.

In the peloton the pace now drops. Moncoutié is the first of the rest over the pass, taking 3rd spot. He will probably go for more mountain points in the next weeks.

Down in Aosta Trofimov and Mollema have gotten 3'15" on the pack. Riding through the valley this remains somewhat constant and as the duo start the climb to the Petit-Saint-Bernard they still have 2'50" left.

img804.imageshack.us/img804/7483/startptbernard.jpg
The Petit-Saint-Bernard has an incredible amount of switchbacks.

On this climb more riders feel they could go for the stage victory, as RadioShack doesn't keep up a very high pace. First it's Uran who tries his luck.

img843.imageshack.us/img843/3528/urang.jpg
Uran going solo.

Next are Vanendert, Arroyo, de Gendt, Kreuziger and Moncoutié. By then Uran has already caught up to Trofimov and Mollema.

img810.imageshack.us/img810/4341/break2.jpg
More riders feeling they can do better.

Uran quickly drops the original two escapees and reaches the top solo, 4'14" ahead of the peloton. The gap to the chasers is 2'08".

img841.imageshack.us/img841/6480/overviewi.jpg
You can still see the valley floor where the climb started.

Starting the final ascent to the Cormet de Roselend Uran still has 4' left on the pack. In the chasing group first Trofimov and then Mollema have to drop. But the chasers don;t get any closer to Uran.

img101.imageshack.us/img101/5104/dropo.jpg
That's it for Mollema.

In the peloton things are still quiet as they start the climb. As Gesink is feeling good we decide to start the pace making. LL Sanchez goes to the front with Gesink on his wheel.

img638.imageshack.us/img638/1784/llsanchez.jpg
Sanchez takes the front to put pressure on the other favorites.

This tempo means that quickly there's only 17 riders left in the peloton. As Mollema is caught, is spent. Van den Broeck and Wiggins now take the initiative and try to break free.

img13.imageshack.us/img13/351/attackse.jpg
VDB and Wiggins starting the real attacks.

But several riders take up the chase so Gesink can drop back a bit. As the group reaches the duo and the 5 chasers, who never saw a glimpse of Uran, Voeckler attacks on the left side. Gesink is the first to respond and now takes the front again, Contador following.

img214.imageshack.us/img214/2305/gesink.jpg
Voecklers sneaky move.

But Voeckler and Uran some time later are quickly caught as the Schlecks and Contador move up. Nearing the end it's Evans who leads, followed by the Schlecks and Contador. Voeckler has to leave a gap and Gesink can't keep up either. Just S Sanchez tries to reach the four.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/7180/homestretchc.jpg
Decisive move in sight of the finish?

Evans, Contador and the Schlecks don't loose power or speed and are able to contest the stage win. Evans is the strongest and takes it in a sprint.

img803.imageshack.us/img803/3661/evans.jpg
Evans takes the first MTF for himself.

Meanwhile Gesink caught onto Samu's wheel again, dropping all the other favorites except Voeckler. So still good news as he comes in 6th.

img844.imageshack.us/img844/1783/gesink2.jpg
Gesink had a good day and was able to keep up deep into the final.

Thanks. At the moment I have very little time to continue this, although I have played stage 11 already. Think I'll be able to get it online this evening. And it's getting really excited so stay tuned!

Stage 11 is the biggest mountain stage of this Tour. So the favorites will be looking to turn the GC into their favor. Gesink will follow as long as possible and hope to drop as many riders that are in front of him as he can. A win here will be difficult as Evans, the Schlecks and Contador looked a lot stronger yesterday.

img510.imageshack.us/img510/6547/stage11.jpg
4 big mountain passes for today.
img195.imageshack.us/img195/5193/climbsn.jpg

Some riders try to form an early break, but like yesterday RadioShack is unwilling to let anyone go. Halfway up the Iseran the pack is still complete.(minus some dropped riders)

img33.imageshack.us/img33/3301/controldy.jpg
Shackies taking a lot of screen time.

But finally El Fares manages to get a gap.

img851.imageshack.us/img851/1126/elfares.jpg
Will the Shack relent?

Somewhat later he is joined by Zandio, vd Walle, Txurruka and Roy and the tempo in the peloton drops.

img651.imageshack.us/img651/3672/break1.jpg
5 riders in the break of the day.

But as the pace drops, more riders are able to attack. De Weert, Gautier and Silin lead the first of many counter moves.

img707.imageshack.us/img707/9628/reactionh.jpg
As the Shack relents others pick up the pace.

And so everything comes back together again about 4 km from the summit.

img810.imageshack.us/img810/1262/control2w.jpg
Gesink already in a good position.

The mountain prime is left open to anyone who managed to stick with the peloton. And it's Kiryienka and Casar who want it the most, with the former taking the win.

img267.imageshack.us/img267/8868/iseran.jpg
Kiryienka adding to his mountain score.

As Kiryienka and Casar let themselves drop back into the peloton El Fares and Gautier try to get a break going again.

img209.imageshack.us/img209/8150/downhillx.jpg
Will it work this time?

It's useless. The Shack let no one get away, and at the foot of the Télegrapha all is still together, with no one going for the sprint.

img805.imageshack.us/img805/3215/control3.jpg
118 km in the mountains and still a huge group together.

So after a pretty boring first half we decide to try and put some pressure on Klöden and his team. Mollema moves to the front as the Télegraphe starts and riders start to struggle with the pace.

img855.imageshack.us/img855/8093/mollema.jpg
The Shack has worked all day, so now is the time to isolate Klöden.

Mollema paces all the way up the Télegraphe and even wins the mountain prime. At the start of the Galibier there´s new movement from the peloton. Determined to get a break on the way Arroyo, Uran and Velits attack and get a gap on Mollema who is getting tired.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/2658/latemove.jpg
Finally a move gets clear.

In the break Velits quickly proves the be the strongest of the three and gets clear to solo on.

img14.imageshack.us/img14/9028/velits.jpg
Velits alone.

To keep the gap under control and put further pressure on the yellow jersey LL Sanchez now moves to the fore and takes over from Mollema. He catches Arroyo and Uran some time later.

img267.imageshack.us/img267/3595/sanchezb.jpg
The top of the Galibier comes into view as Arroyo and Uran are caught.

Near the top Gesink pushes on to break up the peloton even further in order to isolate all favorites. This works out as only 30 riders are able to stick together over the top. Velits has 2´26` now.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/5748/gesink1.jpg
Gesink pushing the tempo.

But on the descent the rider from HTC collapses and quickly loses ground to the favorites, who now ride for the stage win as well.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/6117/caughtbo.jpg
Maybe too little to eat for Velits?

As the final ascent to the Izoard starts no one wants to miss out, but no one wants to make the first move either. So with 15 km to go the front group looks like this.

img69.imageshack.us/img69/2945/statusquo.jpg
Everyone wants to be up front.

Samuel Sanchez is the first to break this status quo. Like Gesink he needs a lot of time to get into the top 10. Van den Broeck jumps onto his wheel as the others watch each other.

img717.imageshack.us/img717/2559/samuf.jpg
The first attack on the final slope.

But soon after this move it's Evans who decides to put in his move. This quickly drags Samu and VDB back and Evans gets a gap on the others.

img31.imageshack.us/img31/1862/evanss.jpg
Evans won yesterday, can he go from 10 km out?

Evans is allowed a gap as the others work together, but with 5 to go Evans has managed to pull away to 40". 17 riders still are together, with the complete top 15 present. At that time it's Contador who jumps almost to Evans' wheel in a big move. It's every man for himself now as Contador almost manages to catch Evans.

img822.imageshack.us/img822/8849/contadoreg.jpg
The ultimate attack, now all will become clear.

But it's not enough. Evans keeps a small gap on Contador. Then Andy follows and next it is Gesink with S Sanchez on his wheel. The others are some way back. Gesink is looking really good and will have to get time on the others now.

img843.imageshack.us/img843/530/overviewy.jpg
A man to man fight now.

But no one can follow Evans, who wins for the second time in a row. Will he get yellow as well?

img231.imageshack.us/img231/6277/evanswin.jpg
Evans is the strongest in the Alps.

One by one Contador and Andy come in 2nd and 3rd. And next it's Gesink alone! He has a small gap on Sanchez, Frank and Wiggins.

img847.imageshack.us/img847/1783/gesink2.jpg
Gesink is the best of the rest.

When do you a next StageGrin

tyriion
After a surprise holiday (first time ever in England Grin) I'm back and I'll continue my thrilling TdF story.

Today it's stage 12, a ride down from the Alps towards Aix-en-Provence. We won't do anything but conserve our strengths. The final climb is not that far from the finish and might give some sprinters pause after the pain in the Alps.

img560.imageshack.us/img560/2450/stage12.jpg
Stage 12 is mostly descending.

After 3 Alpine stages there's still quite a lot of energy left in the peloton, as Coyot attacks right from the start.

img542.imageshack.us/img542/5797/coyot.jpg
Coyot wants to be in the break and quickly gets a gap.

He crosses the first mountain top solo, but after a while he is joined by 8 more riders. Their names are Gerrans, Turgot, Bole, O'Grady, R Perez, Roelandts, Roux and Gallopin.

img828.imageshack.us/img828/7602/breaks.jpg
9 men in the breakaway.

But one more rider wants to join this move, with a late effort by Ignatiev putting him between the break and the pack.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/5852/ignatiev.jpg
Ignatiev in pursuit of the first 9 riders.

Ignatiev manages to catch up to the others and so we get a 10 men break that will be allowed to ride up front. Everything slows down now, as unlike the days before, RadioShack doesn't want to pursue too much.

At a leisurely pace the break reaches Sisteron and the intermediate sprint. It's O'Grady who leads through, 6'01" in front of the peloton.

img7.imageshack.us/img7/7212/sprintcb.jpg
Time enough to see Sisteron.

In the peloton it's Hushovd who takes 11th in front of Rojas and Greipel. Following this there's still nothing from the peloton and with 85 km to go the gap is up to 9'05". Saxobank are leading the pack, but it's time for the sprinter teams to move up if they want their fast guys to sprint for glory.

img14.imageshack.us/img14/9/saxov.jpg
Saxobank are not interested in reeling in the break.

But they don't and it looks like the 10 in the break will decide the stage victory among themselves. At 50 to go the gap is up to 12'40". With Ignatiev being the best in the GC at 1h44' there's np worries for the team leaders.

Some time later with 5 km left in the second and last climb the break has 14'09".

img829.imageshack.us/img829/1525/finalclimb.jpg
Behind this lies the stage victory.

And it's Ignatiev who decides he needs some mountain points.

img845.imageshack.us/img845/3233/ignatiev2.jpg
Shouldn't he wait for the next line to be first?

Over the top the 10 still stick together, so it's looking promising for the fast guys in the break. Roelandts, Bole, Roux and O'Grady all can sprint a fair bit and will be looking to keep the break together. And there are no attack so they enter the final 5 km together.

img406.imageshack.us/img406/6333/final5.jpg
No one dares to gamble it all in one move.

And then the most dramatic thing of today happens. In the descent someone crashes and this results in a chain reaction. A huge group of riders is on the ground, with just the first 50 odd riders making it through without delays.

img94.imageshack.us/img94/4707/crashat.jpg
Who is in it? Voeckler is there in his French jersey.

Everyone is waiting for the neams to come through. It seems the biggest names held up in the crash are Voeckler (14), van den Broeck (10), Vinokourov (8), Martin (7), Leipheimer (6), Basso (17) and F Schleck (9). Gesink made it through and the 5 riders who are directly in front of him in the GC are held up. Two riders don't get back up, Horner and Bodnar won't reach Paris.

As the front of the peloton had a lot of speed the gap is pretty big once the riders pick themselves up. And the Shack leaves Leipheimer behind as they keep a steady pace. The riders in the back have difficulties getting things organized, so it looks like they won't make it back in time.

Meanwhile in the break the riders have reached the final kilometer. Turgot leads his fellow escapees out, with R Perez, Gallopin and Roelandts in his wheel. On the right it's Gerrans coming up strong followed by Roux, while on the left it looks like O'Grady is preparing a move on his own.

img833.imageshack.us/img833/6394/finalkl.jpg
Excting finale where a lot might still happen.

But then I got distracted by the aftermath of the crash so I missed the finish. O'Grady wins it in front of Roelandts and Roux. Too bad I don't have anymore screenshots.

The peloton containing just 62 riders is lead by Cavendish, who finally beats Hushovd.

img545.imageshack.us/img545/8359/peloton.jpg
Cavendish wins, but it's not for real.

A big group containing those involved in the crash comes in 3'31" behind.

Bad luck for some others, but good luck for Gesink. Hopefully he can regain some time on eg WIggins and Klöden, but I think 6 will be the best possible.

Avin Wargunnson
Now that was lucky for Gesink, i agree with dienblad that 6th overall is the best you can reach.
I'll be back

This looks like the best yes. Those riders I might have overtaken, like Martin or Leipheimer, fell. So now I will have to try to win a stage somehow, although I won't risk it with Gesink.
